Needlepoint and Basket Making on Nantucket UPDATED

Janet of JCB Stitches on Instagram was able to tour Nantucket's Hadwen House, which owns the collection of the former Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum.  Why is that of interest to us needlepointers?  There are a set of chairs with needlepoint seats featuring baskets, made for the former museum to honor various people.  Use the right side arrow to see many of them.

UPDATE:  The Nashville Needlepointer visited the museum and shot a short video of the needlepoint chair seats and bench displayed there.

Woodlawn 2024

Happy Tax Day!  Let's celebrate by visiting the Woodlawn Needlework exhibit.

The major award winners are pictured here.  Note there is a link to a list of all the names of those who sent in their work with any awards they won noted.

Waste Knot has a short film of the show to enjoy if you have an Instagram account.

Melita's not been to Woodlawn for the exhibit yet but she knows she won a third place ribbon for her original design.  She recognized the names of quite a few counted designs sent in for the show.

Melita finally made it to the show and shows some of the lovely work she admired there. The stump work cabbage is amazing!

Donna volunteered at the show.  Here are a few pictures of her favorites.

Mercedes of Rogue Needlepoint won a second place ribbon with one of her architectural original designs.

Lori, the owner of Waste Knot, won three ribbons this year, including the coveted Judge's Choice.

A Short Course on An Important Woman UPDATED

You may never have heard of Martha Edlin, especially if you aren't a student of historical embroideries.   Her embroideries are housed in the UK's Victoria and Albert Musuem and because there are a lot of them and they are all signed and can be dated to the period of 1668 through 1673, she is the most cited embroiderer in the English language.  Now Tricia Nguyen has taken years of research into Martha's life and distilled it into a $15 course on Martha Edlin's life and her stitching.

Why is this important?  $5 of the course fee will go to the Victoria and Albert Museum to do closeup photos of their embroidery.  Most of us will never be able to visit the museum to study their extensive collections but good quality, detailed photographs will enable us to look at important pieces from the comfort of our living room.

It's also important because the details of Martha's life in the last third of the 17th Century reveals a much richer, more nuanced portrait of what a stitcher's life back then was like.  If you've ever wanted to make your mark on history, even in just a little way, it's important to support research like this.

Here's where you sign up but note that once you pay, you only have 31 days to watch the videos.  That's part of the deal Tricia made with the museum in order to get access to their Martha Edlin collection.

I often wonder what 21st Century stitchers will know about us.  I suspect not much.  Let's all pitch in and make Martha even more well-known, even if our own stitching history will vanish from the earth when we do.  We owe it to her, to all other stitchers like her, and to ourselves.

Thanks.

UPDATE:  The latest YouTube video talks a bit more about the life of Martha Edlin, shows some of her work as displayed in the V&A Museum, and you'll learn how one goes about trying to piece together the life of a 17th Century woman.

Travels with Tricia

If you are a big fan of Tricia Nguyen of Thistle Threads and her research into 17th Century historical embroidery, you'll love her new video series called Travels with Tricia.  If you want to explore the history of embroidery, are curious about the materials we use to create our needle art, or just want to escape from Holiday Madness, this is the place to start.

Travels with Tricia No. One is both an introduction to Tricia herself and an overview of the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers Guild exhibit in London.  These are the folks who make gold and silver embroidery thread.

Travels with Tricia No. Two goes to the Witney Antiques 2023 Exhibit to see their Elizabeth Hall casket and samplers exhibit.

I've collected a few links mentioned by Tricia for those who want to see more.

Subscribe to Tricia's YouTube channel to see more videos as Tricia releases them.

Helena Wintour's Catholic Embroideries

Mary Corbet stumbled across an online museum exhibit about Helena Wintour's embroideries.

The embroidery in question was done in the 16th and 17th Centuries for Catholic churches in England.  You'll remember in your history books that this is the time of Henry VIII and his banning of Catholicism.  In other words, this was a time when embroidering ecclesiastical designs for Catholic churches was very very dangerous indeed.

The Stonyhurst website has a 20 minute video about Helena Wintour, the times she lived in, and the vestments she created.  Below the video are photos and videos of some of her embroidered vestments with information about the symbolism they contain.  Sadly, there isn't much that explains the techniques used.

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

Mary Corbet recently visited the National Museum of Toys and Iniatures in Kansas City.

It showcases a lot of needlework, including needlepoint done on smaller count grounds like silk gauze.  I believe that the needlepoint designer SharonG has some of her silk gauze pieces in this museum.  You can do a little more exploration at the museum's website.

Orna Willis on Display UPDATED

Thanks to Melita, I know that Orna Willis will have an exhibit of some of her work at the Media Arts Council Gallery in Media, Pennsylvania, starting tomorrow, July 1st through the entire month of July 2022.

It looks like quite a fascinating exhibit.  I hope folks in the area attend.  Orna is a master of color.  Trust me, photographs don't do her designs justice.

UPDATE:  Melita will be attending in style.

UPDATE #2:  Melita reports on the opening of the exhibit here and shows off another Orna small set of pieces she has stitched.

A Needle Art Love Story, Chapter XI

Historic Fort Worth in Texas is sponsoring the 9th year of A Needle Art Love Story June 9-12.

Aren't in Fort Worth?  This year Historic Fort Worth is offering tickets to a Zoom tour.  You can either take the tour June 11 as it happens, or view a recording later.  (The recording will be available for ticket holders to watch until December 31, 2022.).

Want to pick up one of the heart fund raiser canvases available this year?  EyeCandy did the design.  These are available in the Fort Worth area.  I think the French Knot usually carries them (second link below).  They may also be for sale at Historic Fort Worth although they are not mentioned on their website.

Woodlawn Exhibit Report

Reports of the 2022 Woodlawn Needlework exhibit are starting to come in.  Here's what Brenda had to say about the pieces she won ribbons for.

One of the NJNA members won Best in Show!

Stitch Middleburg posted photos of customers' entries.

Donna had a fun visit.

Melita especially enjoyed the Winchester, Virginia chapter of EGA's big exhibit to celebrate their tenth anniversary but she shows all sorts of nice needlework on her blog.

The photos on the Woodlawn Facebook page she mentions are here--Jeff Kulick's piece is an original design on needlepoint canvas.  Go Jeff!

NJNA reports on their Woodlawn experience.

In Stitches is the local counted thread/knitting/needlepoint shop half a mile from the Woodlawn entrance.

Melita's Entries for Woodlawn 2022

Melita has shipped her entries off to Woodlawn Plantation for their exhibit of needlework in March.  You can see what she entered on her blog.

It's fun that all the Kathy Rees designs exhibited are going to be in a scavenger hunt for kids.  Sounds like Woodlawn has really streamlined the check in process, too.

Hope everyone gets to see the exhibit in person.  Photos are great but they are no substitute for seeing something in person.
