A Report from the UK

Anna Pearson has an update on her students and how everyone is stitching over on the other side of the Atlantic.    Everyone seems to like bright colors and using up their stash threads, while Anna is planning presents for her family.

Anna Pearson and the UK Crowd Hang Out Virtually

Anne Pearson has been able to arrange get-togethers for needlepointers in the United Kingdom using virtual technology.  She calls these Needlepoint Forums and they have a theme.

It's a great way to connect with stitching friends and a great way to celebrate the holidays.

Anna's Back from Italy

Anna Pearson is back from another needlepoint retreat in Italy.
http://anna-pearson-needlepoint.blogspot.com/2019/10/recent-italian-trip.html

These sound like a lot of fun.  Eat, talk, stitch something original from Anna's fertile brain, eat some more.  If you are interested, check her website for the upcoming retreat details.  She also does classes in London, if you are going to be in the area at the right time.

Thoughts on Creativity and Home

This morning I have a short essay from Anna Pearson about creativity and our homes, with lots of photos of her work over the years and how she displays it in her own house.

Anna's Guide to Beginning Needlepoint Tools

The English designer Anna Pearson just posted a guide to the tools useful for needlepoint on her blog.  The article also explains needlepoint for those who are new to it, and uses a lot of British language versus what we Americans might say.  She calls Zweigart type needlepoint canvas even weave, for example, and talks about power points (electrical outlets) and flat headed drawing pins (thumb tacks).  She also prefers Appleton crewel but then many of her designs are pillows or for footstools or other items that get wear.
http://anna-pearson-needlepoint.blogspot.com/2019/07/introduction-to-needlepoint-and.html

It's a good orientation for folks who are in the United Kingdom and very interesting for those of us who are not to read.

Anna Pearson Goes Shadow

The British needlepoint designer and teacher Anna Pearson has been rather busy!  She's exploring what she calls shadow stitching, which we in the USA usually call light coverage needlepoint.
https://anna-pearson-needlepoint.blogspot.com/2019/02/new-year-new-projects.html

Her retreats sound lovely and I bet her classes are, too.  I do find it fascinating that she's starting to work light coverage stitches on painted canvas, much as many Americans do.  That's not generally the British needlepoint style.  Keep up the good work, Anna!  We need lots of choices to attract the broadest audience to the world of needlepoint.

Anna at Christmas

Like all the rest of us, the English needlepoint designer Anna Person is way too busy at Christmas! But she is staying sane by stitching.  I hope now that the Big Day is in the rear view mirror we all can take a little time for our needles.

Anna Goes to Tuscany (and Stitches)

Anna Pearson's just returned from a stitching trip to Tuscany.  She arranges these trips and designs a project to work on during them usually twice a year.  In September she's going to Southern Italy!  You can read all about the Tuscany trip here and follow the link to Anna's website to read about the trip to Calabria she has planned.

A History Lesson—and a Warning

Anna Pearson's latest blog posting is about how much we love stitching flowers, but it has a warning at the end we should all pay attention to.
https://anna-pearson-needlepoint.blogspot.com/2018/06/flowers-in-needlework-burn-incident.html

All is not lost if you forget and set fire to your needlepoint, though.  Here is how I repaired deliberate vandalism on a canvas.

Anna Continues to Experiment

Anna Pearson is continuing to experiment with her needlepoint designs,  trying lighter coverage after experimenting with skipping rows, incorporating the color of the canvas into the design, etc.
https://anna-pearson-needlepoint.blogspot.com/2018/04/an-exciting-new-look-at-needlepoint.html

You can explore Anna's designs on her website.
http://www.needle-point.co.uk/canvasses.htm

The book Anna mentions, her Complete Needlepoint Course, is a really good one for learning traditional needlepoint.  It can be hard to find, but New Needlepoint has a copy in excellent condition.

The Alice in Wonderland Screen

The fabulous English needlepoint designer Anna Pearson was sent photographs of a three-fold screen needlepointed with Alice in Wonderland scenes.  The screen is dated 1944 and is in all tent stitches, probably in wool, although where someone would find wool thread in wartime Britain amazes me.  Perhaps this was started before WWII and the yarns already put aside.  Click on the photos for a better look.  Thanks for sharing, Anna.  This is a great treasure!

Anna Talks Decorating with Needlepoint

The British needlepoint designer and teacher Anna Pearson has written a long, fun article about decorating your home with needlepoint. It's full of good ideas to help you figure out what will work for your own abode.  Anna uses her own designs as examples but the principles she lays out will work for any designer's work — or even your own original creations.

Various Stash Projects, Courtesy of Anna Pearson

After you've been stitching a while, you can end up with odds and ends of threads. What to do?  Anna has the answer—stash projects!
http://anna-pearson-needlepoint.blogspot.com/2017/08/the-universal-problem.html

Anna has quite a few designs suitable for using up many colors of thread but you can also visit the free projects available online.  The big thread companies have great free projects.  Here is Caron's website.  Besides the projects link below, look at Designer Spotlights and Online Classes to see more fun things to stitch from your stash.
http://www.caron-net.com/03specialclass.html

Here are the free charts from Rainbow Gallery.
http://www.rainbowgallery.com/free-charts/free-needlepoint-charts/

Finally, the Stitch of the Month projects from the American Needlepoint Guild are classics and a great way to learn while you use up excess threads.  (Hopefully all the former projects will be available again soon as ANG builds out their new website.)
