The local news just profiled Judy's Stitchery Nook in Harlington, Texas and the local Tip of Texas EGA chapter.  They had Catherine Jordan come in and teach them a map class, too!

My Trip to Woodlawn 2011 (Part Three)

I've written about my overall impressions of the items sent to the Woodlawn Plantation exhibit already.  Now let's talk about what I saw there.  I'll post links when there is supplemental material you should see.

The photo above is Carol's stumpwork design which won a blue ribbon.  She kindly gave me an old photo to share with you.  I hope you can see the delicate dragonfly and the lovely flower petals (and the charming caterpillar).  Woodlawn doesn't hand out real blue ribbons any more.  I'm glad about that because often the ribbons would hang over the piece and hide the best parts, but it makes it harder to find the winners.  Blue stickers on the name tags are hard to spot in Woodlawn's less than ideal display conditions.

The first thing I noticed when I arrived at Woodlawn were the very cute little linen pillows that had short sayings like "Eat locally" or "Keep our air clean" or "Be Kind to Animals" on them.  They were the essence of the modern sampler and all stitched by Juniors, perhaps in a class?  These little stuffed pillows are symbolic of the interesting ways the cross stitch and sampler stitchers are pursuing their art.  I saw two spectacular caskets, which are chest-like boxes stitced with typical sampler motifs.  Usually there are stitched accessories called Smalls inside as part of the set.  One casket had its fob, needlecase, scissors sheath, etc. on display next to it.  There was also an upright jewelry chest type piece covered in floral motifs.  These are works of art.  I didn't find a photo of any of the ones I saw online but Betsy Morgan's photo of her latest casket will show you the general style of these amazing pieces.

These weren't the only unusual counted thread pieces, either.  Melita mentioned Constance Tobias' stitched book in her Woodlawn report.  It looked to be stitched on linen, then bound together into a 6-8 page book with what appeared to be 17th Century style Biblical motifs.  The same glass case held other fascinating pieces, including two of Catherine Jordan's river boxes. You can see those on Catherine's website (the first two items).  These are astounding in person.

There were also beaded cuff bracelets and Susan's 5x5 embellished beaded stumpwork pieces.  You can see some of Susan's squares shown in the link below in her lacing tutorial.   Besides the stumpwork girl in a teacup, there was a pastel blue and silver star wand piece, a square featuring a set of painter's easels with their individual drawings, and my favorite--beaded birds among pink and blue flowers.

I found another embellished box in the first parlor.  This one was mermaid-themed with beads and stumpwork.  The smalls belonging to this mermaid casket were decorated with mermaid and shell motifs.  The same room had Susan's Your Majesty piece on display.  You can see her and read about her here.

The last piece I want to mention today, still in the small first parlor, was a version of Michele Robert's stumpwork tulip, done in mauve-pink.  It was lovely!

EGA Report from San Francisco Four

Vicky is back, with more about EGA and San Francisco:

"Today was not so sunny and the temperature was about 20 degrees cooler than yesterday with winds and drizzle. What happened? Summer is not over yet! Well it was warm and inviting in the classroom as today was the day to paint my linen. I was hoping that I could get someone to paint for me as being out of my comfort zone, I get a little uneasy. But the painting was much easier than I thought! After stitching in the California coastline, we need to paint in the ocean and the land. Everyones' looked totally different and just as beautiful as the next one. Some people of course stitch much faster than others, and some not so! We spent the rest of the morning adding the letters and the ship. I am planning on framing mine, so I am doing it a little bit different.

Lunch time came and it was out the door to walk to Marlene's Custom Finishing about 2 miles away. I figured that since I have been enjoying the local adult beverages at night, I thought that the walk would do me good. But what Mapquest didn't tell me that they sent me through a very different neighborhood! I arrived at Marlenes and walked up the stairs and introduced myself. I was amazed at the organized chaos that produces all these beautiful pieces. Lots of finishing ready to go home to happy stitchers. A magnificent pillow marked for Needlepoint of La Jolla, Melissa Shirley's large Halloween witch on its way to A Stitch in Time, beautiful pillows, magnificient stocking, darling ornaments and on and on. If your shop sends finishing to Marlene, you should really have yours sent there! Piles of fabrics and literally miles and miles of cording. Up & down the walls as far as the eye could see, rolls of cording, most of which is hand dyed by them for the perfect color. It was a wonderful visit and I so enjoyed my time spent with Marlene and her girls. Well worth the walk! Marlene did send me back a different way, which was much better.

Back to class to finish up my day. It is so great to see everybody's pieces coming along and many with quite a bit done on theirs. I know that I will finish mine, so that I can have a wonderful tribute to my time in San Francisco, Class ended and it is always sad to see it come to an end, but I guess all things must come to and end sooner or later! Quickly back to my room to drop off my stuff and head over to Needlepoint Inc. This was a much shorter walk and it took me through the trendy Union Square area, which is a shoppers delight with very high end spots to spend your hard-earned money. But I was on a mission and that was to get to Needlepoint Inc, which is located on the 3rd floor on Post Street in a beautiful older building. A quick ride up the elevator and the doors opened to the most amazing shop! Like walking into a candy store, but for needlepointers.  Literally floor to ceiling models, canvases and threads all so tastefully displayed with some Asian antiques intermingled. Spent a good hour in there, checking out every nook and cranny. I did buy a charted design of San Francisco that was designed just for the EGA Seminar in San Francisco. I probably could have bought a lot more, but then there is the wine tour tomorrow and the merchandise night and the....so I am saving myself..."

I think I've found a photograph of the Catherine Jordan class piece Vicky is working on.  I am not sure, though!

Woodlawn 2010 People's Choice Award?

I got an email last night from Amanda who was told at the Woodlawn exhibit that Catherine Jordan's little tree set has won the People's Choice Award.  I am not sure the docent who told Amanda this is right--surely the People's Choice voting has not closed so soon?--but I am sure Catherine Jordan's work is fabulous!  Here is the set in question.  There are more photos of these pieces from other angles in the photo set.
