Attaching Canvas to Scroll Frame: The Movie

Lori of Waste Knot shows how to use masking tape to attach a canvas to the scroll frame of a Lee's table stand.  You can use the same technique to attach your canvas to any scroll frame; it doesn't have to be a Lee's brand.

Masking tape can leave sticky residue if it is attached a while but you can cut that part of the margins of your canvas off if the tape is there long enough to leave stickiness.

The lap frame is available in three sizes:  the baby base will hold stretcher bars or scroll frames that are between 9-13 inches in width, the standard base will adjust from 13-22 inches in width. and the large base will adjust from 22-36 inches in width.

The New Swivel Head for K's Table Stand

I always enjoy reading Sheena's latest blog. She always has a new stitch (or two) diagrammed plus she always has lot of eye candy to enjoy.  This time she shows off some of Lynn's cat designs from Designs by Sharese as well as her new table stand from K's Creations.

The swivel head on the table clamp stand is a new design, similar to their metal floor frame. It's infinitely adjustable, which is just the thing for some stitchers like Sheena who need to recline as they stitch.  Because it fits on the table next to your stitching chair, it's even more useful than the floor frame for some folks.  Thanks to the review and photos Sheena posted, folks who are interested in a clamp on table stand can see how this works in detail.

Hands Free Video

If you've been curious about the K's metal floor frame, the Needlepointer has a three minute video showing you how it works. The adjustments are endless. I love mine! Hint: You can put the plate under a chair or table leg for more stability or you can put a brick or other sort of weight on it. Mine is very stable but if you move it a lot to constantly get up and down, you might want the extra security of something on the plate.

Stitching a Belt Tighter

I noticed when putting my belt canvas on roller bars that I couldn't get the needlepoint canvas as tight as I'd like. Apparently this is a common problem. K's Creations has come up with an unique tool called tension collars that help tighten the canvas more than you can get manually.

I haven't used these so I can't say if they help with a belt canvas.  Hopefully someone who has can tell us how well they work in general, and specifically for a belt canvas.

I Want to Stitch A Belt UPDATED

Let's Stitch a Belt!

I've noticed that many nights I am too tired to stitch anything complicated. but I still want to keep my hands busy. So I took a dive into The Stash and pulled out some narrow scrap canvas and all my colors of size 8 perle cotton to make myself a belt.  Then I borrowed a set of small scroll bars from a friend and put the canvas on the roller bars.  To do this, you need to first measure your belt size, cut the canvas the proper length to fit your waist, and make sure your canvas for the belt isn't wider than the scroll bars.  Then you sew each end of the plain canvas to the material stapled to the roller bars, using long basting stitches.  (See above.)  I also marked with a pencil the start line on my canvas.  The end line (I need 35 inches of belt length*) is also marked but of course you can't see that because it is rolled out of sight.  I will roll my end tighter when I start to stitch.  I just wanted you to see the basting stitches.  You'll need a sharp needle and a thin thread (like size 16 perle cotton or regular sewing thread) to baste the canvas to the stretcher bar fabric.

You can also use regular scroll or roller frames in your floor stand.  I borrowed a small scroll frame (the dimensions are roughly seven inches for the side bars where the fabric is attached and eight inches for the bars that are normally at the top or bottom).

Some folks also stitch belts in hand, rolling each end and clipping it shut with something like the giant paper clips available at office supply stores.

I'll be stitching this turned on end, with the side bars that have the nuts to tighten/loosen the canvas on the top and bottom.  Here's another view so you can see the two rows of basting I did.

I charted two vaguely Asian motifs (a flower and a paper lantern) for my belt.  I've decided to use dark navy blue for the background and will stitch the motifs in other contrasting colors.

*As always, think about finishing before you start a project.  Since I plan to send my stitched belt to Hill Top Leather Shop to make up into a belt, I read over their belt information very carefully.  That's how I know my belt needs to be 35 inches long and that the first and last two inches of stitching will be covered by the leather and buckle of the finished belt.    The belt finisher you choose may use different finishing techniques, so always check with them first.

UPDATE:  Here is belt information from Needlepoint.com.  They want something totally different when it comes to measuring a belt length and how to work the edges.  The moral is, always ask how to measure the length and the preferred edging technique before you start your belt.

Floor Stands, Lights and Magnifiers in Use UPDATED

Sheena just got back from one of Bedecked and Beadazzled's great classes. This one was a flamingo canvas from Lulu My Pink Turtle and it looks fabulous.  Flamingos have been all the rage (along with llamas) at the Orlando NTA show, so Ruth is on trend with this darling piece.

Besides the class project and some other fun items, Sheena took good photos of the various lights, magnifiers and floor or table stands folks used.  It's a great way to see the System 4, the K's floor stand, the Dublin Craft Magnifier and the Duo Lamp in action.  After all, the best stand, light or magnifier is the one that works in your stitching nest!

I have the same K's metal floor stand that she does and although you can't see it's flat metal plate base, you can tell that it will fit right under her love seat/recliner.  Knowing just how a floor stand will work with your favorite stitching chair is the biggest clue whether you will love it or regret spending the money.  Hopefully this photo will help you make up your mind whether to ask Santa for the floor stand you've been eying or not.

The Strong Man and The Oracle

I'm sure with all the wonderful new canvases that will soon be arriving at our local shops, we are going to need new tools.  Needlepoint Tool Time has photos of the new accessories for the K's floor frame on their website.  The first photo (labeled "Iron Man pose") shows off the wide new arms you can get.  It's a good shot of the wide stance wooden feet, too.

Another interesting tool I stumbled across is the Bead Oracle, which is a little card that helps you figure out the size of your beads and has a beading wire conversion.  If you do a lot of beading on your NP canvases, you might want one.
