May 2026 NJNA Chapter News

The New Jersey Needle Artists chapter of ANG is back with their bi-weekly newsletter.  There is ANG Seminar news, including the adorable frame weights that are available.  Lowry has a new gadget that attaches to your floor stand to allow you to watch your tablet, laptop or phone as you stitch.  They also have a new spring green color for those who want more excitement in their life.  Daylight also has a new light that goes around your neck and shows true color.  It is called the DuoNeck Go.

You'll want to check out the Fraymeworks Frames, sold by Needlepoint Clubhouse, that work as stretcher bars and a frame for the finished piece both.

The second May posting is up with new bags, threads, classes, and more!

Daylight's Anita Lamp

Barbara's Needlepoint shows off the Anita Lamp from Daylight in this Facebook unboxing video.

For those who don't have a Facebook account, I found the Anita table lamp here.  There is a floor lamp version, too.  Both have Daylight bulbs, so that the colors are true.  There appears to be a tray to hold your threads (I don't know if it comes with the lamp or costs extra) and the lamp itself is adjustable.  The magnifier is also somewhat adjustable and you can change the smart phone clamp to view the screen horizontally or vertically.  It doesn't look like the clamp itself adjusts enought to hold anything other than a phone, however.

Many thanks to Barbara's Needlepoint for alerting us to this lamp.

The Daylight24 402039-04 Full Page 8 x 10 Inch Magnifier LED Illuminated Floor Lamp

Teresa just ordered this floor light-magnifier from Daylight and really likes it.

The Daylight website has more details.  Apparently it comes in black or white or silver. Shop around for the best price.  It only weighs eleven and a half pounds, though. I'd be worried it would tip if one of my large dogs bumped it and I'm not sure how much the goose neck arm will bend to put the illuminated magnifer straight over your stitching.  Note that this is an LED lamp which means I doubt you can replace the LEDs when they burn out.  The magnifier is plastic, not glass.  It must be assembled before using and I don't know how long the cord is.

As a fire safety tip and to protect the magnifier from scratches and dust, it would be wise to cover the head when not in use.

Thanks for the tip, Teresa!  Bet this is just perfect for someone!

Light Magnifers from Daylight for Travel

A member of Needlepoint Nation mentioned the Daylight Halo light-magnifiers as perfect for travel as they fold flat.  There are two versions:  one with a cord (often not allowed at seminars and classrooms these days) and one that is rechargable through a USB connection.  Both the Halo Go (rechargeable) and the Halo 5D have a 5 diopter magnifier.  Note that both versions sit on a table.  They don't clamp to your stretcher bars or floor frame.

A Brief Review of the StarMag LED Flexilens

I finally caved in and bought a light/magnifier that clips on my stretcher bars or desk as my drug store glasses aren't cutting it any more.  It is called the StarMag LED Flexilens and it is made by the Daylight Company.  It has two tiny LED lights powered by three AAA batteries in the base.  You turn the base upside down and slide open a little door to insert the batteries which are supposed to power the LEDs for up to 40 hours.  The "Naturalight" description means that the LED lamps emit a pure white light.

The flexible arm is a little over 8 inches long and it can rotate 360 degrees, but it doesn't reach very far.  If you are working on a canvas that is wide, you'll need to reposition the clamp quite often I bet.  Luckily the clamp will open to almost one and a half inches, so it clamps on mini stretcher bars, the regular size stretcher bars and Evertites.   It also will clamp to my desk or the coffee table, but I'd put a piece of felt or rubber drawer liner in the clamp before I used it on wood to prevent scratches.

The base has two wings that extend out from the base to steady the whole thing if it is sitting on a table but I find them useless as I need the lens reaching too far out over my canvas. That makes it too top-heavy to stay upright if it is on a table.  I won't use the side wings.

The lens is four inches in diameter.  It magnifies twice the actual size except for the little insert that magnifies four times.  You can see that inset lens in the photo directly above.  I can't focus the little insert properly, at least I haven't figured out how yet, but that's ok.  I don't need it.

The StarMag LED Flexilens comes with a little drawstring bag cover for the lens and a warning never to leave it uncovered in sunlight as it might start a fire.  The lens is plastic and probably fairly easy to scratch so I'll keep it covered unless it is in use.  The whole thing is not heavy but it is heavier than my canvas (which is on 8x10 inch mini stretcher bars) so holding the canvas in hand is tiring after an hour or so.  I am not certain if I'll use it clamped to the stretcher bars yet or clamp it to my desk or coffee table next to my stitching chair.  It appears to be small and light enough for travel but you'd need to pack it carefully to prevent damage.

Daylight makes several StarMag lights or light/magnifiers.  Some are magnifiers only, some have a different type of clamp that doesn't appear to open as wide as this one.  If you want both light and magnification instead of magnification only plus the same clamp as mine, look for StarMag model UN1161.  You'll pay around $45-50 USD for this model unless you find a deal.

My current project is on 7x7 inch regular width stretcher bars and the StarMag LED Flexilens is heavy and large enough I haven't used it clamped to the stretcher bars.  It's a bit awkward to use for something this size or smaller.  I clamp it on the desk to use it if necessary for this piece.

I like this a lot. Perfect?  No, I would prefer lighter weight with a much longer neck but for the price, this is a good deal.

Daylight's Portable Light/Magnifier

Needle Point Breeze showed off a new small folding light/magnifier from Daylight on their Facebook page.  Use the right side arrows to see more views of how this works.

This looks like a great little item for checking for missed spots.   I can't see using it consistently when you stitch but I bet shops really can use this to help customers with problem areas.

A Survey of Cynthia's Lights

Needlepoint for Fun has talked Cynthia Thomas into writing an article about the various lights she uses for her stitching.
http://www.needlepoint-for-fun.com/best-needlepoint-lights-to-use.htm

As a teacher and stitch guide writer, Cindy stitches all the time, so her experience with lights for travel and her home is wide.  Hopefully this will give you ideas in case you need a new light yourself.

The Mighty Bright Orchestra Light and More

ANG has just announced that starting in 2018, folks will not be able to use plug in lights at Seminar due to hotel regulations.  I guess they are afraid we are going to burn the place down with all the extension cords and plugs!  So the hunt for a good portable light source is on.

This orchestra light from Mighty Bright has been recommended. I can tell from the photo that this won't fit over stretcher bars but it can still be useful as I bet it is very very bright.
http://www.mightybright.com/Music-Lights/LED-Orchestra-Light/

Although these piano stand lights are more expensive, one of these might be a better idea for a stitching table.

The Flexilens from Daylight is a light and magnifier that clamps or stands on the legs that extend from the base.  I'm told the clamp opens enough to go over Evertites, which are wider than most stretcher bars.

Ott has a small fold up lamp.  It is more expensive but you can use coupons and sales at the big box crafts stores to reduce the price.

This very bright portable light is inexpensive and folds up for travel.

The MagniFlex Pro is larger and heavier but is a light and magnifier combination.  It also has a magnetic base.

The Fancii is also a light/magnifier that operates on batteries or a USB cable.  It clamps onto a table, although the clamp doesn't seem that it will open wide.

Needlepoint Tool Time has several small portable lights.  Click on the name of each for further details and ask Tisha for help if you have special requirements.  She specializes in stitching tools so is familiar with many lights and magnifiers.

StarMag's Clip-on/Freestanding Magnifying LED Light UPDATED

Melita just posted on Facebook that she loves the StarMag LED light/magnifier from Daylight that clips onto her Evertites.  (The clip opens up to about an inch and a half wide.)  It can also be used as a tabletop light as there are little legs that pull out to stabilize the light/magnifier when it isn't clipped to your frame.   Melita got this from Nimble Needle in New Jersey.  Here it is from their website.

UPDATE:  Brenda loves hers and posted photos so you can get a better idea if this is the light/magnifer you want.
