Mary Corbet Reviews the Rockler Magnifying LED Clamp On Light

Mary Corbet learned about a table clamped light/magnifier from Rockler, bought one, and reviews it here.

She links to the manufacturer's website so you can get more information and see more photos and a video. Note that the lens is said to be glass, not plastic.

It's not wildly expensive but it's not cheap either, so think carefully about how/where you stitch so you know if it will clamp to your table, if the power cord is long enough for you, if the magnification is enough, if an 18 inch long neck will work for you, etc.  Remember, this is an LED light so when the bulbs go out, you'll have to replace the whole thing.  I couldn't find how many hours the LEDs are supposed to last on the website.

BigEye Lamps with Magnification UPDATED

Needlework Retailer shows off a photo fo the BigEye lamp, which has magnification and comes in floor and table models.

These are now owned by Mattingly Low vision which sells wholesale only.  You can find these on many lamp websites, however.

UPDATE:  The floor lamps now have a new rolling base available.  Check with the manufacturer to make sure it works with your lamp if you have one already.

A Brief Review of the StarMag LED Flexilens

I finally caved in and bought a light/magnifier that clips on my stretcher bars or desk as my drug store glasses aren't cutting it any more.  It is called the StarMag LED Flexilens and it is made by the Daylight Company.  It has two tiny LED lights powered by three AAA batteries in the base.  You turn the base upside down and slide open a little door to insert the batteries which are supposed to power the LEDs for up to 40 hours.  The "Naturalight" description means that the LED lamps emit a pure white light.

The flexible arm is a little over 8 inches long and it can rotate 360 degrees, but it doesn't reach very far.  If you are working on a canvas that is wide, you'll need to reposition the clamp quite often I bet.  Luckily the clamp will open to almost one and a half inches, so it clamps on mini stretcher bars, the regular size stretcher bars and Evertites.   It also will clamp to my desk or the coffee table, but I'd put a piece of felt or rubber drawer liner in the clamp before I used it on wood to prevent scratches.

The base has two wings that extend out from the base to steady the whole thing if it is sitting on a table but I find them useless as I need the lens reaching too far out over my canvas. That makes it too top-heavy to stay upright if it is on a table.  I won't use the side wings.

The lens is four inches in diameter.  It magnifies twice the actual size except for the little insert that magnifies four times.  You can see that inset lens in the photo directly above.  I can't focus the little insert properly, at least I haven't figured out how yet, but that's ok.  I don't need it.

The StarMag LED Flexilens comes with a little drawstring bag cover for the lens and a warning never to leave it uncovered in sunlight as it might start a fire.  The lens is plastic and probably fairly easy to scratch so I'll keep it covered unless it is in use.  The whole thing is not heavy but it is heavier than my canvas (which is on 8x10 inch mini stretcher bars) so holding the canvas in hand is tiring after an hour or so.  I am not certain if I'll use it clamped to the stretcher bars yet or clamp it to my desk or coffee table next to my stitching chair.  It appears to be small and light enough for travel but you'd need to pack it carefully to prevent damage.

Daylight makes several StarMag lights or light/magnifiers.  Some are magnifiers only, some have a different type of clamp that doesn't appear to open as wide as this one.  If you want both light and magnification instead of magnification only plus the same clamp as mine, look for StarMag model UN1161.  You'll pay around $45-50 USD for this model unless you find a deal.

My current project is on 7x7 inch regular width stretcher bars and the StarMag LED Flexilens is heavy and large enough I haven't used it clamped to the stretcher bars.  It's a bit awkward to use for something this size or smaller.  I clamp it on the desk to use it if necessary for this piece.

I like this a lot. Perfect?  No, I would prefer lighter weight with a much longer neck but for the price, this is a good deal.

Help Purchasing a Lighted Magnifier

Dazors are the gold standard of lighted magnifiers. They are expensive but very long lasting.  For those who are considering a purchase but who don't understand the terminology of lenses, or who are confused about which model will suit them, or what diopter means, Dazor has an information page useful for anyone considering a magnifier, whether you end up with a Dazor model or not.

Daylight's Portable Light/Magnifier

Needle Point Breeze showed off a new small folding light/magnifier from Daylight on their Facebook page.  Use the right side arrows to see more views of how this works.

This looks like a great little item for checking for missed spots.   I can't see using it consistently when you stitch but I bet shops really can use this to help customers with problem areas.

A New Brand of Light Magnifier

Brighttech is a new brand of light/magnifier on the market.  They sell floor and table models and light/magnifiers that clamp onto a desk or table.  There is a five year warranty on the ones I looked at, but these are LED lights.  I don't think if they burn out the lights can be replaced.

Need Wearable Light/Magnifiers?

I just re-read Kurdy Briggs' description of the cheap wearable light/magnifier she uses and looked them up on eHobby.
https://www.ehobbytools.com/Magnifier-Visors_c_161.html

Here is what Kurdy uses.  She's the brains behind Threedles Designs' charts, by the way.

If you need prescription light/magnifier glasses, you'll want to check into CraftOptics.  Note that the light is a separate option from the prescription glasses with magnifier.

Everyone's eyes are different.  Some folks need just a good light, some want a light/magnifier combination.  Whatever eyes you have, treat them well and use good lighting of some sort.

The Ott Light/Magnifer: A Review

My New Ott Light-Magnifier

Before Thanksgiving (where does the time go?!) I bought an Ott light on sale at Joann's Fabrics.  Now that I've used it for a while, it's time to post a short review of how it works so that folks looking for a light-magnifier combination can see if this might work for them.  As you can see in the photograph, this is a clip on light with a bendable arm, LED lights and an acrylic magnifier with an insert for extra magnification.  It also has a removable heavy base if you want it to sit on a table instead of clipping it to a table or your stretcher bars.  Here's more information about the light-magnifier.  Note that the magnifier lens is five inches in diameter and it runs on four button batteries which are included in the box.
https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/ottlite-3-5-inch-battery-operated-led-magnifier-clip-and-stand/1046553959?Keyword=ottlite

I've never used the heavy base as I either clip the light-magnifier to my stretcher bars or my desk.  The clamp will open up enough to hold onto my desk that is nearly an inch thick so I think it will work on Evertites.  The light is not particularly bright, however, and of course if the LEDs go bad they cannot be replaced.  I also don't use the little extra magnification area much as it is so small.  I also find the magnifier head quite heavy.  It will tip over when it is clamped to the stretcher bars or make the stretcher bars a little unwieldy to hold, so I normally clamp it to my desk instead.  The flexible neck isn't very flexible, either.  It only bends a little to each side.  I would prefer a longer, more flexible neck myself.  The canvas above (Barbara Elmore's "Fuchsa" from Sundance) is around 16 inches high, to give you a sense of scale.

To sum up, this is a useful tool with some limits.  It's a little too heavy to put on regular stretcher bars and the extra spot of magnification in the lens is small.  The neck isn't very long or flexible.  The light isn't awfully bright, either.  But it is useful when you need a little extra help to see and since it is fairly small and light weight, it would work well as a travel tool, especially in combination with a lap or table stand.  If you need a boost, this might work well, particularly if you can find it on sale like I did.

Brenda Loves the Naturalight Magnifier

This type of light/magnifier has been quite popular lately for those who use fatter stretcher bars and want a fairly portable magnifier that includes a light. Brenda loves hers!
http://brendasneedlepointstudio.blogspot.com/2015/05/magnifying-glass-must-have-tool.html

The light comes from LEDs.  The official name of this appears to be StarMag Flexlens with Base and Clip.  I guess Naturalight is the manufacturer.  Several shops sell these and I've also seen them on eBay.  The magnifying lens appears to be plastic and is a tad more than four inches in diameter.

An Adventure For the Golfer UPDATED

Melita has finished the glasses case she created for her golfing husband. It's a beauty, too!   But you should read the adventure she went through to create it in order.  First, she bought the canvas at Designers Desk when she was at the ANG Seminar in Chicago in 2014.
https://melitastitches4fun.wordpress.com/2014/10/27/golfing-anyone/

Melita had to adjust the area to be stitched in order to make it glasses case-sized.  She also found using a StarMag clip on light really helped her stitch the black painted area with black thread (second link although right now Nimble Needle is sold out).  UPDATE:  Nimble Needle has the StarMag clip on lights again!

Melita decided to use the finishers at Rittenhouse to make her golf canvas into a glasses case.

Rittenhouse did a spectacular job!

StarMag's Clip-on/Freestanding Magnifying LED Light UPDATED

Melita just posted on Facebook that she loves the StarMag LED light/magnifier from Daylight that clips onto her Evertites.  (The clip opens up to about an inch and a half wide.)  It can also be used as a tabletop light as there are little legs that pull out to stabilize the light/magnifier when it isn't clipped to your frame.   Melita got this from Nimble Needle in New Jersey.  Here it is from their website.

CraftOptics: Light Magnifier Clipons

If you are interested in a light and/or magnifier that clips onto your glasses, then this review of CraftOptics' lens systems is something you need to read. It shows you exactly what the system is like and how it works.  This is very valuable information for those who are hesitant to spend that kind of money on clip on lights/magnifiers that might not work well for you.  It's also interesting to see other options than large light/magnifier systems which don't work well for everyone's stitching nest.

Review: the BoaMag Portable Light/Magnifier

Summer time is the time for travel and a time when folks might be especially interested in portable light/magnifier gadgets, so I was particularly pleased to stumble upon Ruth's review of the BoaMag.

This link shows the product better and lists the specs if you want to look further into this.  It's on Amazon for a little over $25 plus free shipping if you are ok with a slower arrival, but you might find it at a better price elsewhere.

A Light Magnifier and System 4 Accessories Clamp

The Bristly Thistle has a light/magnifier highlighted on their blog today. It is shown used with a System 4 floor stand.
http://bristlythistle.wordpress.com/2012/05/15/needlepoint-system-4-accesories/

I happened to have owned this very light magnifier and used it happily for over a dozen years until the halogen bulb burned out.  Switching bulbs is not easy in this model (the bulb base has wires, so you have to pull out the old one and insert the wires of the new into the socket) and mine never worked right after I replaced the original bulb. Of course it took the original bulb over ten years to burn out!  The replacement bulb finally shorted out and I've been doing without a light/magnifier ever since, although I have my eyes on a Dazor table model to use as a replacement.  Still, I used it for a very long time and liked it as much as the person reviewing it.  I used mine first with a Gazelle floor stand (made by Elan) and then with a K's metal floor frame.  The base of the light/magnifier is a round pole that is inserted into one of the round holes in the System 4 light and magnifier holder clamp.
http://www.bristlythistle.com/ns4.html

Both my Gazelle and my K's metal stand also have holes the right size to accept this pole, so you can use this style light/magnifier with any stand or base with a matching hole.

Mighty Bright's Clip-on Light/Magnifier

I've been saving up for a Dazor light/magnifier for a while since my old light/magnifier died. They are expensive so I purchased a battery operated travel light/magnifier to stand in until my piggy bank is full again. The photo you see above is what I bought--a Vusion Craft Light by Mighty Bright.

It has a very bright LED light with a high and low setting controlled by the black button on the top of the light, a two inch magnifier that enlarged to twice the normal view through an "optical grade" acrylic lens, and a base where it stands upright until you need to clamp it on your frame. The clamp is large enough to handle my stretcher bars and ahoops, and the box says it will fit over Q-Snaps as well. The base has a large round magnet on the underside. You can put the light/magnifier in the base under a latch so it can sit on a table or hang sideways off the refrigerator when not in use. It takes three AAA batteries and is probably not meant for continuous use, just for travel. It seems to weigh about a pound and doesn't add substantially to the weight of any project I want to stitch holding the frame in my hand. The two necks bend separately in any direction--and stay there--to light or magnify your canvas (or both) as you stitch. You can buy an adaptor to plug into the wall and use like any electrical appliance but for me that would interfere with clamping this on my canvas. This AC adaptor costs extra and you have to buy it separately if you want it.

I've stitched a bit with my Vusion Craft Light and so far I like it very much. But I don't need a lot of light or much magnification and I don't mind the very small magnified area. I also don't need "true" illumination and don't mind a slight bluish ast from the LED lights. I am not sure it is wildly durable, however, since the clamp is plastic. I think a lot of clamping and unclamping might eventually break it.

Shop around on the Web before you buy something like this. I found it here on sale for $23.99 and no shipping charges. It came to me via UPS about four business days after I ordered it. I think it also might be available from Needle in a Haystack in California although I don't see it listed on their website now.

http://www.lampsplus.com/Products/desk-lamps/Type_Book-Lights/08118/

Here it sits on the base. Can you see how much the magnifier enlarges the base itself? I find it very useful and perhaps it'll meet some of your stitching needs also.
