A New Brand of Clip On Lights

Janis really likes this cheap clip on light.

There appear to be a variety of sizes of this, but this seems to be the closest to what Janis has.

The Daylight Smart Travel Lamp: A Review

Mary Corbet reviews Daylight's Smart Travel Lamp, with lots of photos and information about how it works.

Mary's reviews are always thorough and tells you everything you need to know if you are in the market for a lamp to make stitching easier.  Note that if you buy one through her recommendation page on Amazon, she gets a little bit of money from the sale.

Tips for the Visually Impaired Stitcher

Barbara Elmore is posting tips for stitchers with vision problems on her Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/barbaraelmoredesigns/

Barbara's having problems with her eyes right now but she's using her disability to come up with ways for stitchers who also have vision trouble to keep stitching.  Kudos to you, Barbara!

(If you are late to the party, look for postings that start around October 8, 2019.)

Robots are Taking Over

A lot of folks have been commenting that the NTA show in Orlando had lots and lots of canvases featuring llamas and flamingos. That's true, but what really caught my eye were all the robots!

Besides Raymond Crawford's robots,
http://raymondcrawford.com/designs/robots/index.html

Kathy Schenkel had a Christmas robot mini sock,
http://pocketfullofstitches.blogspot.com/2019/04/orlando-market-our-finds-post-1.html

Needlepoint Inc. has a somewhat scary one,
https://needlepointinc.com/products/gray-robot

Actually, they have a lot of them!  I like the red one.
https://needlepointinc.com/collections/new-arrivals/robot

Waterweave has Robot Greetings, which makes me smile.
https://stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=42269&title=Robot%20Greetings&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Pepita has a cute one with a heart beat monitor.
https://www.pepitaneedlepoint.com/product/kits-canvas/robot-one

It also comes with a buddy.
https://www.pepitaneedlepoint.com/product/kits-canvas/robot-buddies

Petei has a tiny robot.
https://www.needlepointbywildflowers.com/products/copy-of-canvas-wedding-groom-handpainted-needlepoint-canvas-by-petei-design-from-p-pony-1

You can even get a robot in a beginner's kit.
https://buttonbluecrafts.com/collections/craft-kits/products/robot-needlepoint-tapestry-anchor-1st-kit-3690000-20019

Or a more advanced kit you can personalize with a name.

This stitcher created an original design so she could incorporate LED lights into the robot.

A New Brand of Light Magnifier

Brighttech is a new brand of light/magnifier on the market.  They sell floor and table models and light/magnifiers that clamp onto a desk or table.  There is a five year warranty on the ones I looked at, but these are LED lights.  I don't think if they burn out the lights can be replaced.

Need Wearable Light/Magnifiers?

I just re-read Kurdy Briggs' description of the cheap wearable light/magnifier she uses and looked them up on eHobby.
https://www.ehobbytools.com/Magnifier-Visors_c_161.html

Here is what Kurdy uses.  She's the brains behind Threedles Designs' charts, by the way.
http://threedles.com/04012016/Frames/threedles_frameset.html

If you need prescription light/magnifier glasses, you'll want to check into CraftOptics.  Note that the light is a separate option from the prescription glasses with magnifier.

Everyone's eyes are different.  Some folks need just a good light, some want a light/magnifier combination.  Whatever eyes you have, treat them well and use good lighting of some sort.

Brenda Loves the Naturalight Magnifier

This type of light/magnifier has been quite popular lately for those who use fatter stretcher bars and want a fairly portable magnifier that includes a light. Brenda loves hers!
http://brendasneedlepointstudio.blogspot.com/2015/05/magnifying-glass-must-have-tool.html

The light comes from LEDs.  The official name of this appears to be StarMag Flexlens with Base and Clip.  I guess Naturalight is the manufacturer.  Several shops sell these and I've also seen them on eBay.  The magnifying lens appears to be plastic and is a tad more than four inches in diameter.

Need a Little Light?

Folks rave about these small Ikea LED lamps.  They won't work well in all situations as they are either powered by a cord or a USB connection.  But they are small and cheap and if you don't use very wide stretcher bars, they'll clamp to your canvas.  Might even clamp to your floor frame or table, depending on the size of the area you want to attach the lamp to.  (Apparently the clamp only opens to one and a quarter inches wide.)  Some models come with an on/off switch I think.

Want LEDs With That Needlepoint?

If you are interested in adding LED lights to your needlepoint, either in the finishing or to light up part of the design itself, this is the place for supplies and tutorials on how these gadgets work in sewing.  Many thanks to Dorothy H. for mentioning this on Facebook's Needlepoint Nation!
http://www.adafruit.com

Oh, they carry the components and a tutorial for a wifi controlled laser cat toy called Raspberry Pi.  Just saying.

My Magnificent Flying Angel

Petei's Flying Angel

Here is my Petei Flying Angel, straight from the magic fingers at West Coast Finishing.

The Finishing is Superb
I wish you could see the details in person.  The pedestal with its stars matching the angel's star garland is terrific, the red bow cute as a bug, and the trim perfect.  Both sides of the ornament are padded to add a little dimension.  She's wonderful!

She Has a Special Touch
To read the whole story of my flying angel, go here.

She Lights Up!  What a Surprise!

Many, many thanks to Sue Parsons of West Coast Finishing.  I had no idea you planned something as great as this!

When you last saw her, she was hiding in a drawer, awaiting Finishing Magic.  Want to know how you know you have a great finisher?  The finisher makes your piece ten times better than it was before they worked on it.

You'll see how my Flying Angel turned out tomorrow.

Friday Finishing: Lights and Tables

Trust me, you have never seen a glow-in-the-dark Halloween piece like this!
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2014/04/boo-its-halloween.html

This was the fall mystery from Bedecked and Beadazzled, using a canvas from Hal Mayforth.

The second piece is also from Bedecked and Beadazzled.  This is a Lani collage stitched in a Meredith Willet class by the wildly talented Palma Seljan and made into a table.

Need Magnification?

None of us are getting any younger, aren't we?  More fabulous maybe, but our eyes might need a little assistance now and then. BeStitched recommends this light/magnifier they sell.  They've included tips that pertain to any light/magnifier combination, too.
http://bestitchedneedlepoint.com/magnification-and-magnifier-lamps/

If your eye problems are much more serious, then this magnifier is worth knowing about.  My beloved godfather suffered from Macular Degeneration, a horrible disease that destroys the vision in the center of your eye.  If you or anyone you know has eye problems, follow the link for more information.
