New Stitch Monday Builds a Castle

Ridgewood Needlepoint has chosen a new canvas for 2026--Colors of Praise's "Castle MC502." There are three other versions of this castle which are not as detailed, all on 18 count.  Here is MC516, which is 7 inches square.  Love that garland!

MC507 is 6 inches square with some lovely greenery.

MC508 is a tiny piece at 3 1/4 inches by 5 inches, perfect for the miniature lover.   This belongs inside an Easter egg, doesn't it?

Stephanie is working the 18 count version of MC502.  Most shops stock the original 13 count but you can get the 18 count from Bedecked and Beadazzled, which also has a stitch guide.

Now let's watch Stephanie stitch!

The first step is picking threads and stitching the lake.

The next step is to work the grass around the lake and stitch the path.

Now Stephanie is creating mountains with an Airplane Stitch variation.

She continues the mountains with a Chevon stitch variation and gifts us two other chevon-type stitches that will make nice mountains, too.

Now the castle roofs have a stitch, which has many different names.

Stephenie tackles the sky, clouds and the blooming tree.

Next she works the urn and the wall in preparation for the ribbonwork that will go on top of these areas.  Easier to do the background first in those instances.

The castle and all those towers are done.  The greenery and flowers will be done in ribbons next.

Introducing Leonard the Lamp

This is Leonard.  Leonard is a lamp.

He started out as a Colors of Praise canvas.

Here is Leonard's friend, Sunrise.

Add one glass lamp that you can take apart to insert your canvas, and you can make Leonard another friend.

By the way, Target apparently carries a lot of these glass lamps.

The Reveal

Recently Marie Barber of Colors of Praise has started creating one-of-a-kind tapestries.  These are huge projects on needlepoint canvas that are going to be a labor of love for one lucky stitcher.  Here's the latest, revealed at a trunk show at Needlepoint.com.  It's three feet by four feet on 12 count canvas.

Here's a better look of Lady of Spring.

The next original Marie Barber tapestry (also 3x4 feet on 12 count) is "Tigre che fa il bagno", or "Bathing Tiger."

You can see a slightly closer view here.

Needlepoint.com shows off the two small pieces Marie painted during the trunk show at the two shop locations.

Watching

My next publicly stitched project will be Colors of Praise's "Women Watching Turtle."   It's a 9 inch square design on 18 count.  I like the unusual point of view and the ambiguity of the title. Is the turtle watching the woman or is she watching it?
https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/colors-of-praise/products/woman-watching-turtle

I intend to limit the number of stitches I use for this piece, trying to emphasize the design instead of throwing every stitch in my books and thread in my considerable stash at it.   To get an idea of what I am attempting, listen to Gay Ann Roger's discussion of how she approaches design on the Fiber Talk podcast.  This will tell you where I plan to start and something about how I'll stitch that area.

Stay tuned to see how well I do!

NJNA's News

The December newsletter from the New Jersey Needle Artists Chapter of ANG is full of news, tips (buy disposable eyelash brushes at Amazon to remove fuzz after ripping out?!), and other fun things such as Colors of Praise's new Anna Clutch bags.

I found more photos of the Anna Clutch bags.  Act fast, though.  These are one of a kind, handmade by Marie Barber's Cousin Anna in Sweden.  Note that these bags are approximately 13 x 9 inches, are lined inside and all have tassels on the zipper pulls.

Watching Two

I've been busy getting Watching on stretcher bars and pulling a ton of threads that might (or might not) work for this piece.  My normal procedure when I pull a canvas from my stash is to find any thread that appears to be a similar color to my painted canvas and put them all in a box that sits near my stitching chair.  That way I have plenty of choices when I get ready to stitch an area.

Normally I start with the background, but I've listened to the Fiber Talk interview with Gay Ann Rogers several times (link below in case you haven't caught it yet) and I'm altering my usual approach slightly to try out some things Gay Ann mentioned.
http://wetalkfiber.com/2018/08/12/fiber-talk-with-gay-ann-rogers-ii/

I'm going to start with the face of the woman and probably will stitch her arm nearest the turtle right after that.  And then I probably will stitch her hair.  Then I will work on the green water which is the background of this design.

To read other articles on Watching (official title is "Woman Watching Turtle" from Colors of Praise—the photo is at the top of the right hand column), use the search box at the upper left corner to search "watching."  If all goes well—and I can't promise that because Blogger is getting flaky—all the articles written about this design should appear.

All About Button Covers: The Movie

The Pointing It Out Podcast team talks button covers in their latest video.

You'll learn about button covers and how to assemble them.  Patty Paints started making button cover designs with the buttons included in 2020-21 but you don't have to use her designs.  You can buy the button cover hardware from places like Joann's Fabrics.  Dritz makes a variety of sizes.

The largest button covers available are 2 1/2 inches in diameter.   You'll use a three inch round piece of needlepoint for these.

If you want to glue a magnet on the back, look for 1 1/4 inch rare earth magnets (also known as neodymium magnets) and do use E6000 glue to attach the magnet as it's a glue that hold metal to metal very well.

Here is the link to the button covers tutorial Patty Paints did on Instagram.

Creating a Riot of Curls: The Tutorial

I am about to do the hair on my current project, "Hawaiian Woman" from Colors of Praise.  The canvas is 2x3 inches on 18 count and you can see it on the left unstitched.

I decided I wanted her hair to be all curls tumbling all over the canvas. That seems to suit the way I envision the canvas.  Because of how I plan to stitch the hair, I stitched the face, neck and two backgrounds before I tackled the hair so I won't snag the curls when doing these sections.  The pink flower will be added once I do the blouse and necklace so I don't snag it as the flower will be dimensional, too.

I plan to use a technique that is based on something Sue Parsons of West Coast Finishing saw.  I took her description and played around to come up with something like the hair she had seen and wanted to use on her canvas.  Here is what Sue and I collaborated on.

By the way, Sue's canvas is "Fantine" from Leigh Designs' Water Babies series.  Isn't she cute?!  Sue did a lovely job stitching her.  This is a close up of the baby mermaid's face.  You can see the whole canvas on the Fleur de Paris website.

I will be using ribbon floss for the Hawaiian Woman's hair.  If you aren't familiar with ribbon floss, it is a braided flat thread made by YLI.  It sort of looks like a heavy ribbon.  Ribbon floss comes in regular, metallic and Shimmer Blend (which is regular ribbon floss with some metallic woven in) plus a sort of heathery look.  Ribbon floss used to come on 15 yard spools like these.

A few years back YLI started putting it on plastic reels instead.  It's the same thing and the same 15 yards of thread, just packaged differently.

To create these curls, you need ribbon floss and either a cotton floss the same basic color or invisible beading thread.  I'm going to use black Shimmer Blend 034 for my Hawaiian Woman's hair.  Sue used Metallic Coal Black 144-F07 ribbon floss for her mermaid above. Doesn't matter what color you use or whether it is regular, Shimmer Blend or metallic, but you need to use ribbon floss. I think the metallic ribbon floss gives you more Shirley Temple-type curls but I'm working with limited samples here.

To create curls, cut a length of ribbon floss that is about two and a half times as long as the lock of hair you wish to create.  Tie a large knot in one end of a length of ribbon floss and thread the other end into a needle’s eye. (A larger than usual needle is good; you might also want to use a sharp needle if you anticipate needling to sink the end of a lock of hair in a place other than a hole on your canvas.). Secure the knotted end well on the back.  Come up at the either the beginning or end of a length of hair and remove the needle.  For larger areas like the baby mermaid's hair, come up at the tip of the curl.  For a smaller area like the Hawaiian Woman I'm stitching (this canvas is only 2x3 inches so the hair area is small), come up at the hairline near the face.

With your fingers, flick the cut end of the ribbon floss until it separates into the various filaments that make up the ribbon floss. Grab 1-3 of them and hold on tightly while you slide the rest of the ribbon floss down toward the knot on the back side of your canvas.

Your ribbon floss will look like the example strand on the left of my canvas near the scissors, except the knot will be on the back side.  See how long some of the ends are?  Those are the plies I held as I slid the rest of the thread down toward the knot.  You will need to trim the long ends so they are even again.

Thread up the ribbon floss strand again and plunge the needle down through the canvas where the curl or lock of hair ends. Don’t rush or pull tightly. This is not hard but you must be patient and relaxed for the best results.

Arrange the scrunched up thread as necessary with your fingers, then tack the thread into position with a matching color of cotton floss (one ply only) or clear beading thread and a sharp needle. Depending on the length of the curl, you may need 1-3 tacking stitches. I recommend you start in the middle of the hair and work toward one side, then go back to the middle and work your way to the other side.  I normally wait until all the hair is in before adding tacking stitches.  Remember, your needle comes up at the edge of the face, gets scrunched, and then you thread up again and go down at the border.

In the photo above I used my needle to determine the slant of the length of hair I was about to stitch.  I took a photo and then had this as a guide for that slant I wanted.  Practice makes doing these much easier. You should try doing a few of these in the margins of your canvas before you actually create curls for the person you are stitching.

Here's a larger version of the hair underway.  See how messy it looks?  There are loops sticking up, her eye is partly covered, the flower behind her ear is partly covered, etc.  This stage is normal.  Get all the hair stitches done, then you can start tidying things up.  Push the hair out of her eye and tack it into position with your couching thread (clear beading thread or a matching ply of cotton or silk floss--or even a matching blending filament if that is what you have).  Mash a loop down that is sticking up too much and tack it down.  It's like going to a beauty parlor and getting a perm.  Once the curlers come out, you still need your hair brushed.

Here is the hair with the locks pushed into the position I wanted and tacked down here and there with the invisible beading thread.  Remember, you can use a ply of cotton floss in the same color as the hair if you don't have any clear beading thread.

And finally here is the Hawaiian Woman with the flower behind her ear and her hair blowing in the wind.  Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and can use it to good effect on one of your canvases.

Favorites from Destination Dallas 2019

Speaking of BUY IT NOW, I've had lots of fun looking at the latest new designs that were revealed at Destination Dallas last week.  As usual, I have favorites and I've been looking at trends.

"Beach Happy" from Melissa Prince

It seems lamas and dogs are very popular now.  I've seen lots of new dog canvases.  The above is my favorite from Melissa Prince, but she has several others available, including a hilarious mystery lovers dachshund that I call "Baskerville."

This Tapestry Fair llama is a charmer.  There are two others in the series.

Designer Unknown
Birds and Halloween continue to be big themes.  This wonderful crow piece with tropical drinks (designer unknown) made me smile.

Owl with Birds, Mary Lake-Thompson of Melissa Shirley Designs

I like this birds canvas a lot, don't you?  This is from Mary Lake-Thompson, distributed by Melissa Shirley.

The Owl from Sandra Gilmore

I love this owl.  It appears to be from Sandra Gilmore of Once in a Blue Moon Designs/Fleur de Paris.  Lots of personality in this bird!

Face Cards, DJ Designs

This stylized playing card is fun!  I know a lot of folks are intimidated by stitching people but these from the playing cards series would be an easy stitch.  There are quite a few in the set.  Designer is DJ Designs, courtesy of my spies!

Mary Lake-Thompson's "Halloween Pumpkin Hat"

I also really like this Mary Lake-Thompson piece of a witch with her red-winged blackbird and decorated hat.

Gayla Elliott/The Collection Designs

The new portraits by Gayla Elliott (The Collection Designs) are wonderful.  I think these are all six inches square so they wouldn't be too big to work on.  It's hard to choose one!

Asian Woman, Colors of Praise

But I think this is my very favorite canvas of all I've seen.  It s from Colors of Praise.

Favorites from TNNA's June 2016 Show

Otto Agular's "3 Ladies with Wildflowers"
Once again I've collected my personal favorites from the June 2016 TNNA show. There are a range of designs, some from new designers, some from well-known names. But all of them caught my eye for one reason or another.

Above is a new Otto Agular from Purple Palm Designs.  This is called "Three Ladies with Wildflowers."  I think it is a lovely mix of colors and shapes.  Easy to stitch?  Probably not but I adore the facial expressions.  You can make up endless stories about what these three are thinking and feeling.
https://www.facebook.com/PurplePalmDesigns/photos/a.800127770017208.1073741834.796107397085912/1245499032146744/?type=3&theater

Barbar Tourtilloutte/HSN Designs

Hingham Square Needlepoint is developing a line of canvases under the HSN Designs name.  My favorite so far  is this adaptation of Barbara Tourtilloutte's artwork.  I call him Moose-y Christmas in my own mind.  The framework of the beech trees and the top and bottom borders are wonderful as is the sweet subject matter.
http://www.hinghamsquareneedlepoint.com/barbara-tourtillotte

dede's Celestial Wizard

Fleur de Paris posted the front and back of dede Odgen's "Celestial Wizard" on Facebook.  Definitely my favorite double-sided canvas!  Ok, so it's the only double-sided canvas I noticed that's new but I do like the wizard and his companion owl a lot.
https://www.facebook.com/FleurDeParis/photos/pcb.1046532755400341/1046528492067434/?type=3&theater

Colors of Praise

Another favorite is this new Colors of Praise canvas of a sunbather and a turtle. How wonderful is that?!  I love stitching people and love the tropical feel of this encounter of two sunbathers.
https://www.facebook.com/BeStitchedNeedlepoint/photos/a.152368144832122.34517.126229327446004/1007095216026073/?type=3&theater

Sascalia's "Snowy Foxes"

I also adore this "Snowy Foxes" canvas from Sascalia which has a light feel, much different than the usual snowy scenes.  The pastel colors and the fresh greens and golds make this a late spring snowstorm kind of piece, which is very unusual.  I like unusual!  The artwork is distributed by Golden Needlepoint.
http://goldenneedlepoint.com/t/sascalia

Mary Lake-Thompson's Nutcracker Ornament

I don't usually like nutcracker pieces as I find those teeth creepy, but I really like Mary Lake-Thompson's new nutcracker ornament.   I like the rounded shapes and the expression on his little face.  This is part of a series of small ornaments that would make a spectacular display.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/gallery/?index=8435&cat=70

Cleo'a Mummy is 31 inches tall!

I'm always a sucker for canvases with themes taken from Ancient Egypt.  This tall beauty is from Labors of Love and would be great fun to stitch.  I'd buy a ornament of just her head, not having a place for such a large piece here.  (hint hint)
http://www.laborsofloveneedlepoint.com/see-whats-new.html

Squid and Whale (Charley Harper)

I am not really a fan of Charley Harper designs, although they are extremely well done and often quite funny, but this fight between a squid and a whale caught my eye, probably because I am a big fan of squid, octopi and cuttlefish.
https://www.facebook.com/175899759125776/photos/pcb.1003726636343080/1003726323009778/?type=3&theater

And there you have it--the new canvases I would buy if I had endless funds and endless time to stitch them.  Which one do you think I actually bought?
