Taking a Kelly Starke Class on Finishing

The NJNA Chapter of ANG sponsored an ornament finishing class with Kelly Starke as the teacher.

Melita took the class and also reported on it.

They did round ornaments first, then shaped ornaments.  Everyone had a good time and learned something.

Finishing Leaves with a Wired Edge: The Movie

Kelly of Start Art Designs just posted a free video demonstrating how to finish leaves with a wired edge.

This is particularly interesting given how many folks are stitching the Kam Wenzloff leaf wreath from Needlepoint Now magazine.  It's a long video but shows everything you need to do if you want leaves you can bend into position.  By the way, the list of supplies Kelly mentions is on her website here.  Note that I think you want to use the thinner interfacing, not the extra firm interfacing.  This allows the leaf to be more bendable.

By the way, I couldn't find the finishing video Kelly says was posted on Needlepoint Now's website but there is a written tutorial here.

Attaching a Sawtooth Hanger

Kelly of Starke Art posted photos showing how to sew a sawtooth hanger to the back of a sign or something similar to hang on the wall.  She recommends you sew through the foam core in the center, not just the fabric, to secure it.

Standup Feet

Kelly of Starke Art Designs uses glass drawer pulls as feet for standups when she does finishing.  Use the side arrows to see all the photos of the Santa under construction and as a finished piece.

You can buy these at hardware stores but Etsy has a better selection of unusual ones.  Look for ones that have long screws to attach to your piece and that have flat fronts so they will stand up securely.

How to Finish Mini Stockings: The Two Part Movie

Kelly Starke Maichele of Starke Art Designs has posted a two part video about finishing mini stockings using hand sewing on YouTube.  She says this is a rough take on it without editing but I found it interesting and informative.  Note that the hot glue she uses is in the middle of the design, not touching the needlepoint or backing fabric on the outsides.  Of course you can stitch all this but it will easily double the amount of time you will need to finish a mini sock.

Thanks for trying to help us learn finishing, Kelly!
