New Scallop Frames from Penny Linn

Penny Linn has new scallop acrylic frames.  They are either round or square, hold 4 inch pieces, and come in frost white, pastel pink or blue.  It looks like they have a back piece that snaps on to hold your finished ornament in place.

The Smart Cookie Award for November

A friend of Amanda's stitched table numbers for her sister's wedding.  For those of you not on Facebook, they have a pretty border, the number and the initials of the bride and groom.

They are quite pretty, aren't they?  They are on acrylic stands for the wedding but will be used as coasters at the bride's house after.  Very clever!

Self Finishing Video for Colored Acrylic Clutches

KC Needlepoint has posted a video explaining how to finish your needlepoint and insert it in colored self finishing acrylic clutches.

The clutches will hold a canvas that is 6 1/8 inches by 3 7/8 inches.  KC Needlepoint sells the self-finishing tool.

I don't see the colored acrylic clutches or double-sided tape on their website,  but I did find something similar here--

You can find the double sided Scotch indoor tape from 3M many places.

New Acrylic Trays

Everyone is coming up with new versions of acrylic trays for self-finishing.  Both The Needlepoint Finisher and KC Needlepoint offer trays that have scalloped edges.  KC Needlepoint will also have colored acrylic trays made.  Looks like both companies' trays have slots at the bottom where you slide your finished needlepoint into the bottom of the tray.

KC Needlepoint Has New Styles of Acrylic Trays

KC Needlepoint has announced new styles of acrylic trays available through the shop.

You can get colored acrylic sides, scalloped edges, and handles added.  I can't be certain, but after studying the photos I think your finished item slides into a slot at the bottom of the tray.

Stitch Stash has a new acrylic standup to showcase your round 4 - 4 1/2 inch ornament.  They weigh around 3 pounds and have a slit at the top where you drop in your finished canvas.

You can also get a square version for a 4 - 4 1/4 inch square ornament.

These are only available at Stitch-Stash (above) or Emily's Stitchery.  Note that the shops are taking pre-orders--these should be in the shops by late September-early October.

Acrylic Self Finishing Takes the Needlepoint World by Storm

If you haven't been paying a lot of attention to the world of needlepoint, you might have missed all the acrylic boxes, purses, trays and more available for those with finished needlepoint to insert inside them.  Stitch by Stitch Larchmont has posted a lovely long article about all the various things that are available (and naturally they have canvases that will work with each.)

The two new items they carry I haven't seen before are tic-tac-toe boxes...

...and matchbox holders with canvases of various famous restaurant or hotels.  Both appear to be bundles of the acrylic and matching canvas that will fit in it.

Of course many many shops carry acrylic items these days and many have access to acrylic manufacturers who will make custom items.  Ask your favorite shop for ideas and help.

Acrylic Inside and Out

I recently revisited Island House Needlepoint's website, just to wander around, after NJNA mentioned their unique laying tools.  Island House is a finisher but the owner is an engineer who also designs some very interesting tools.  I discovered they use both acrylic forms inside your ornament, and for trays and such to insert your work.

That is truly unique.  They also sell laser cut cardboard forms for finishing (look under Shop/All Products) and acrylic templates for those who would like to use them for marking out the margins of background.

The Wool and the Floss also sells acrylic template sets. These have center lines to aid positioning just like the ones Island House sells.  Neither template type is meant to replace acid free board for the insides of needlepoint ornaments and such, however.  I think they might be a little thinner, but that's just a guess from studying the pictures.

Penny Linn Designs is adding 4 inch round and 4x4 square acrylic self finishing coasters with magnetic closures for your ornaments.

Acrylic Coasters and Trays for Self-Finishing

Needlepoint by Laura just announced their new 4 by 4 inch acrylic coasters for self finishing are now in stock.  The opening is half an inch wide and you slide your finished needlepoint in or out.  It looks like this is an open box with the needlepoint sliding in the side and the top serving as a coaster.  There is a little curved notch on the bottom to facilitate inserting or removing the needlepoint.  These have rubber feet on the bottom.

Here is where you order the acrylic self-finishing coasters on the Needlepoint by Laura website.

Note that Needlepoint by Laura also sells self-finishing acrylic trays.  These are all 6 by 6 inches in diameter.  One style has a quarter inch high space in the bottom to insert your stitched canvas.  Again, you slide your needlepoint in on one side.

The other 6 by 6 acrylic tray has a half inch high space to insert your needlepoint in case you have a fatter canvas with lots of raised items.  It doesn't appear that the trays have the rubber feet that the coaster has.

Heirloom Designs also has a variety of acrylic coasters and trays and even a paperweight for self-finishing.  You can see the variety of available items here.  The paperweight/coaster and the coaster with pink edges are unique.

Finishing an Acrylic Purse: The Movie

Kathryn recommended this video on finishing needlepoint for those clear acrylic purses on Needlepoint Nation.  The video shows several different ways to finish the panels yourself, which is nice.  You can pick what works for you best.

Thanks, Kathryn!

Acrylic Coasters for Needlepoint

Recently folks on Needlepoint Nation have been asking where to buy acrylic coasters with a space for their stitching.   These shops said they stock acrylic coasters:

Two shops said they have an acrylic finisher.  I'm sure many more do that haven't found the posting yet, so check with your favorite shop.

You can find acrylic coasters on Etsy, too.  My search for "acrylic coasters for embroidery" turned up these:

Warning:  these things may not have enough space for anything dimensional like ribbons or beads.  It's not clear if you can remove your stitching and replace it with something else if you wish, either.  Beware.

If you need something custom, have your favorite shop talk to Kreative Acrylics.  They can do almost anything.

Acrylic Purses for Self Finishing

Kelly Hoch discovered these clear clutch bags on Amazon and painted, then stitched a monogram canvas to carry to a wedding.

Note that this clutch is a tad over 7 inches by a bit over 4 inches.  These come in various acrylic colors and are available with either silver or gold hardware.  You'll have to turn the raw edges of the canvas that's this size over, then whipstitch or glue fabric to hide the back before sticking inside the purse. There are a ton of styles available through Amazon (see the bottom of the page) plus these are probably widely available elsewhere.

This Etsy shop has a nice selection of colors and good pictures.

Here is an EyeCzndy design stitched and inserted in one of these purses.

Ok, Now That I've Stitched This, What Do I Do With It?

The traditional uses of needlepoint were wall hangings, table covers and upholstry. These days we mostly make pillows and pictures, but that's far from the only thing you can have needlepoint finished into.  Needlepoint Now magazine has some great ideas for using your finished needlepoint projects.
https://needlepoint.com/blogs/needlepoint-know-how/creative-finishing-ideas-to-make-your-project-your-own

If you have plenty of cash, how about a needlepoint purse or belt from Chuck Pinnell?  It will take a while but you'll have a heirloom to use for a very very long time.

Not made of money?  Hilltop Leather will do a fabulous belt or keychain for you that won't cost the earth.

Want to do the finishing yourself?  This online store has a great variety of leather goods that are self finishing.  You can make a box, wallet, credit card holder, tissue box, purse, luggage tag, key chain, coasters, cosmetic bag, jewelry container, ornaments, and much much more.  Stitch your canvas, trim it close to the stitching and pop it into the item!

Finishing Acrylic Trays

Yesterday we had an unique folding ort box with a zipper in the bottom. Today Needlepoint.com explains in detail (including pricing estimates) how they finish needlepoint canvases to insert them into acrylic trays.

Acrylic Easels for Displaying Needlepoint

If you want some of those L shaped acrylic display stands for your minimalist needlepoint display, have your favorite shop check with Stitch Elegance.  They can get you any size you need.  Note that the shop has just moved, which is why the website is under construction.

You can also check the framing department in any of the big box craft stores but in my experience they have limited sizes available.
