Breaking News: Anchor Tapestry Wool Discontinued

Breaking News!  Jolly Red says that Anchor tapestry wool is being discontinued!

This is a bigger deal for UK companies that use tapestry wool from Anchor for their kits, but Jolly Red will use up their stock of Anchor tapestry wool, then switch to Appleton wool (which I prefer, but I know this is a personal choice).

I've not been able to confirm this news anywhere (Anchor doesn't appear to have a website) but I don't doubt that Jolly Red knows what they are talking about.  If you love Anchor's tapestry wool, good luck grabbing what you can now!

As far as I can find out, Anchor cotton floss is not being discontinued.

The Latest News from NJNA

The latest issue of the New Jersey Needle Artists Chapter of ANG has news, including new stores opening and new classes for the fall.  Links to the new shops are below.  Don't miss the Needle Paint Hawaii ornaments which are a fund raiser for Maui.

Of course the big news is that DMC has bought Anchor.  That's very big news indeed.

Anchor Tapestry Wool and Cotton Floss Come to Big Box Stores

Anchor Tapestry Wool

I'd heard on the grapevine that in the US big box craft stores now carry Anchor tapestry wool and cotton floss.  Last weekend I stopped by the Michael's near me and saw these two displays beside the DMC cotton floss area.  As you can see, there are a limited range of colors but the wool is available in both nearly 11 yard small skeins and the large nearly 44 yard hanks.

Anchor Embroidery Floss

The cotton floss is presented on spools instead of little skeins and there are more colors available.  The display doesn't say how much yardage is on a spool but Anchor claims there is 25% more thread on the spools.  I found this article about the floss spools.

I've never used Anchor tapestry wool but I really like their embroidery floss so I'll be picking up a range of colors I use a lot to add to my stash my next trip to the big city.

Threadaholic Alert: Anchor!

People are starting to report that the big box craft stores are carrying Anchor again.  Donna found Anchor tapestry wool and cotton floss (now on spools, not skeins) at her local Michael's.  Also try Joann's Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, etc.

Folks say that Anchor is only turning up at the largest stores.  I've also heard people think the Anchor floss packaged on spools is a bit thinner than the skeins version.  Here's much more from the Sun City Stitcher.

A Source for Anchor Tapestry Wool

All wool threads are harder to find these days, so I was thrilled when I noticed A Dragon's Tale recommends this Canadian Etsy shop as a good source for Anchor tapestry wool.

Robots are Taking Over

A lot of folks have been commenting that the NTA show in Orlando had lots and lots of canvases featuring llamas and flamingos. That's true, but what really caught my eye were all the robots!

Besides Raymond Crawford's robots,

Kathy Schenkel had a Christmas robot mini sock,

Needlepoint Inc. has a somewhat scary one,

Actually, they have a lot of them!  I like the red one.

Waterweave has Robot Greetings, which makes me smile.

Pepita has a cute one with a heart beat monitor.

It also comes with a buddy.

Petei has a tiny robot.

You can even get a robot in a beginner's kit.

Or a more advanced kit you can personalize with a name.

With Tongue in Cheek

Charlotte at Hanging By A Thread reports on a serious problem which I am posting here with tongue in check and plenty of black Splendor, DMC floss and perle cotton in my stash.  (I hope. Guess I'll go check.)

Anchor Update

I posted a message to the ANG list about Anchor discontinuing some colors in their line of pearl cottons and received some information from various folks there I should mention. Elizabeth from Dames of the Needle mentioned that "Presencia will be coming out with pearl cottons in their line that will match the colors being discontinued. While there may be dye lot differences these colors will be around, but produced by another company. They were announcing the addition to the pearl cotton line at the San Diego TNNA show."

Here is the Presencia website. This is a Spanish thread under the brand name Finca, but it's available in the U.S. and you can order directly from their website.
http://www.presenciausa.com/

Eileen from Ridgewood Needlepoint mentioned Anchor is basically dropping their #3 pearl weight threads, which is the fattest perle cotton. Some colors from the other sizes of their perle cottons are being discontinued but the real impact is on those who need the #3 Anchor perle cottons. So check your stash and any projects you plan on stitching in the future to see if this impacts you.

Many thanks to Eileen, Elizabeth and of course Denise for bringing this up in the first place. Our shop owners and designers are THE BEST!
