Magical Color Class (Jennifer Riefenberg)

Melita Glavin is taking a color class from Jennifer Riefenberg.   You can work the cool colors sampler or the warm colors sampler, but luckily for us, Melita's classmate is Kathy Rees so Melita worked the cool colors piece while Kathy worked the warm colors.  Then Melita posted photos of each so we could see the differences.

Fiber Talk Canvas: A New Needlepoint Series on Counted Canvaswork

Gary, Beth and Cindy have started a new podcast exclusively about counted canvaswork as part of Fiber Talk.  The third Wednesday of each month they will talk about stitching on blank canvas from a chart.  If you ever wanted to learn more about this type of needlepoint, it's a fun way to dip your toe into things.  All the videos with the latest on top are collected here--

They've added two videos demonstrating putting canvas on stretcher bars.  You can see those here.

The second full episode of counted canvaswork covers the availability of blank canvas, the cost of threads, how to read a counted chart and shows the various laying tools that are available and how to use them. (Note that Gary plans to make the laying tool section a standalone video.)

By the way, Fiber Talk has just done an interview with the counted canvaswork designer Kathy Rees of Needle Delights, so if you want to get to know one of the talented people who designs needlepoint charts, you can listen here.

The third video is all about Congress Cloth.

The fourth covers needles, choosing the right size, how often to discard a needle and more.

Video number five discusses storing fat threads like perles and Watercolours.  To see the organizational tools that Lucky Jonquil sells, visit the second link below and choose "Thread Organization."

The sixth video is all about perle threads, both silk and cotton.

Cupid's Logs (Kathy Rees)

Jan's next project will be a chart from Kathy Rees called "Cupid's Logs."   This design is based on a quilting interlocking log design.  She is choosing her own colors from her stash of Watercolours threads.

The center heart is finished.  Now Jan has to decide what colors to use in the background.

You can buy the chart or threads from the designer at her Needle Delights website.

Tuscan Midnight: Stitching Kathy Rees

Jan the Stitch Lady is starting a new charted piece called "Tuscan Midnight."  It's from Kathy Rees of Needle Delights.

She is having fun!

And it is done, magnificently, I should add.

Lorene Salt's Africana

Jan of the Stitch Lady blog has finished the modified Kathy Rees design she turned into a baby birth sampler and is now looking forward to working Lorene Salt's "Africana" with her local ANG chapter.

The Chilly Hollow stitch isn't my creation.  Jean Hilton made it up.

Jan's working on a stash sale Santa (from Melissa Shirley?) while she waits for the class to begin.

Oops!  Counting errors are the bane of my existence.  I feel for you, Jan!

It's done--and it is beautiful!

I'll update this as Jan posts about her progress.  If you aren't familiar with Lorene Salt's designs, here is her website to explore--

Turning Kathy Rees Into Walker

Jan is expecting a new great grand-daughter so she is modifying a Needle Delights design into something more girly than what she stitched for her great grandson.

Holiday Delights: Birthday

Jan's got a new family member, so naturally she's stitching something for him.  Her project is one of Kathy Rees' "Holiday Delights" charts.  Jan modified it somewhat to suit her.  It's really cute, just like its new owner.

If you aren't familiar with Kathy Rees' designs, here is her website.  The link is to her series of Holiday Delights.

50 Years of ANG

The American Needlepoint Guild (ANG) has been with us fifty years.  They just had their 50th Seminar in Tucson, AZ and both Jan and Melita are reporting back about all the fun.

Brenda had a lovely time despite two bouts of COVID.

Here is what Melita has seen so far.

The NJ Needle Artists are at Seminar as well.

Melita reports on her Kathy Rees class:

Melita is also taking Jennifer Reifenberg's class on photographing needlework.

Melita is learning to use handmade paper on her canvases in a Dawn Donnelly class.

Melita has the pleasure of seeing one of her original designs win an award for its stitcher.

AND Melita's "Crescent Journey" will be ANG's Stitch of the Month in 2023!

NJNA has a brief review of the seminar and news about ANG's 50 for 50 fund raiser.

Melita's Entries for Woodlawn 2022

Melita has shipped her entries off to Woodlawn Plantation for their exhibit of needlework in March.  You can see what she entered on her blog.

It's fun that all the Kathy Rees designs exhibited are going to be in a scavenger hunt for kids.  Sounds like Woodlawn has really streamlined the check in process, too.

Hope everyone gets to see the exhibit in person.  Photos are great but they are no substitute for seeing something in person.

Colors Make a Difference

The New Jersey Needle Artists chapter of ANG has posted a monthly update of the charted designs everyone is working on.  As always, the various colors chosen really make a difference in how the design looks.  Color is magic!

The ANG projects are only available to ANG dues-paying members, but Razzle Dazzle is by Ann Strit-Kurz and is available from her website.

NJNA Do Stitch of the Month UPDATED AGAIN AND AGAIN

ANG's New Jersey Needle Artists Chapter has been working the current Stitch of the Month project as a group.  Now that they are nearly done, you can really see how the various colors change the design.

Some people have changed the background stitches slightly.  Which do you like, the original or the changed background?  And what color combos speak to you?

UPDATE:  A change in the background.

UPDATE #2:  Brenda is stitching this also using a red, white and blue color scheme.  It's really lovely.

UPDATE #3:  Here are all the chapter members finished projects.

UPDATE #4:  Here is Melita's version.

Destination Dallas Begins (with Counted Canvaswork)

Most all the shop owners, designers, thread manufacturers, authors and of course representatives of Needlepoint Nation are at Destination Dallas by now. Let's start the celebration with the counted canvaswork designers, shall we?

Kathy Rees of Needle Designs Originals has three new charts available and she'll be at Destination Dallas.  Make sure you send your shop owners to visit with her and pick up the latest.  Even if you don't stitch from charts, check out Kathy's examples to see how changing a border totally transforms a design.
http://needledelightsoriginals.blogspot.com/2018/09/where-has-summer-gone.html

Debbie Rowley of DebBee's Designs shows off a new teaching piece inspired by the ceiling of Chicago's Union Station.  This will eventually be available as a chart once Debbie is done teaching it here and there.
https://debbeesdesigns.com/2018/09/12/teaching-projects-gilded-cabochons/

I will continue to post updates in the Destination Dallas tab but I didn't want you to overlook the counted things in a sea of painted canvases.

Nashville Market Video Interviews! UPDATED

Fiber Talk is at the Nashville Market doing videos of the exhibitors. Besides interviewing sampler and counted thread folks, they also talked to Doug Kreinik, Debbie Woodward/Painted Pony and Kathy Rees/Needle Delights Originals.
http://wetalkfiber.com/2018/03/03/fiber-talk-at-the-nashville-market-ii/

They also talked to Sally London of Rainbow Gallery about threads and Kurdy Biggs' designs!  (As an aside, the rumor that I would run into the Rainbow Gallery booth and grab all the threads and run is totally false.  Probably.)
http://wetalkfiber.com/2018/03/03/fiber-talk-at-the-nashville-market-iii/

Gary and Christine have done a lot of other booth interviews with sampler and counted thread designers.  If you'd like to browse those, go to their main page and explore.

UPDATE:  The fun continues as Gary interviews more folks at the Nashville market.  This set of videos includes an interview of Julia Snyder of & More.
http://wetalkfiber.com/2018/03/04/fiber-talk-at-the-nashville-market-viii/

This video grouping includes an interview with the maker of Rolaframe frames and stands.

This set has an interview with Raymond Crawford and the Hug Me Bags folks.

The final set of videos are all about Treenway Silks.

Needle Delights is proud to announce that their design "Duality"won at Woodlawn! Here's the stitcher with her prize winner.

I don't see "Duality" on the Needle Delights Originals website so this may be a teaching piece only.  I did find some interesting color ways, though.  Enjoy!
