Rainbow Ribbons Pillow (Kam Wenzloff)

Melita and her Main Line Chapter of ANG stitched Kam Wenzloff's "Rainbow Ribbons" design as a chapter project.  Melita had hers finished into a pillow, which you can see here along with the other color ways ANG members came up with. Need Curly Ribbons?

Note that the fabric your ribbon is made from will effect the results.  Scissor curls don't work on grosgrain ribbons.  You may need to experiment a bit to see what works for you.

Japanese Ribbon Stitch: The Video UPDATED

Ruth Schmuff did a little video on how to do Japanese ribbon stitch for one of her mystery classes and shared it with all of us.  It's very easy to do, but hard to explain, so this is a very helpful video.  Note that Ruth uses the Japanese ribbon stitch to lock the wide 7mm ribbon into the needle and also uses it to create foliage on her canvas.

I suspect she is using River Silks silk ribbons as it comes in 4mm, 7mm and 13mm widths and is exceptionally strong.  It won't fray as you stitch with it and comes in a huge range of colors. I highly recommend River Silks ribbons.

Straw Silk, the Lists

Straw Hat in Straw Silk

Silk Road Fibers has created a color list of all their available Straw Silk threads. This ribbon-like flat thread is a mix of silk and paper.  It looks like raffia, and can be used on either 13 or 18 count, depending on the stitch you want.  For tent stitches or long stitches on 18 count, you can split it down the middle to get a thinner thread.  Use a needle to get the split going at a cut end, then pull the two parts apart slowly and carefully.

I used a lot of Straw Silk on Leigh Designs "Japanese Tea House."  The tree bark and the lower layer of leaves are in Straw Silk.  So is the mass of bushes in the lower right corner.  I've used it in places on many other designs but not in such profusion as here.  It was perfect for the plants on this piece.

I also used it for the straw hat worn by the "Miami Gold Digger," again from Leigh Designs.  The photo of the hat is above.  Once again it was the absolutely perfect thread for this section of my canvas.

All About the New Ribbons at Market

I've been eagerly awaiting reports on the new ribbons that Barbara Elmore and Sundance released at the Winter Market.  And here it is--from Barbara herself!  They are called Stitchy and Glitzy Ribbons.  Barbara even has included a brief tutorial on how to use these on needlepoint canvas.  That bluebird is to die for!

Sundance has also introduced a smaller diameter Sparkles, the tubular mesh that is perfect for special effects. It's called Mini Sparkles.  Here is a video about Sparkles, the regular size, but the smaller size is used the same way.
