I absolutely love Joan Thomasson's Peace Angel but there is a lot to see and enjoy here.  Betsy Morgan's teaching (love her counted sampler smalls!) and Marnie Ritter is going to be there.  And who would want to miss a class with Carole Lake and Michael Boren?    The Japanese Embroidery designs and silk metal work from Kay Stanis are outstanding as well.

Need a Getaway?

Need to get away? Want to go somewhere where there are no dishes to be washed, no laundry calling, no one demanding to know what's for dinner? Have I got a place in mind? Heck, YES! Callaway Gardens' School of Needle Arts.

This is the place to huddle with Carole Lake and Michael Boren to plot and plan how to stitch that gorgeous canvas that you bought and haven't a clue how to stitch.  This is where you can study under the most famous and skilled needle artists on the planet--Marnie Ritter (complex original stitches) and Joan Thomasson (those fabulous angels) and Dorothy Lesher (amazing embroidered figures).  You can learn how to embellish a design with Meredith Willet's or Sylvia Marmariu's help and use those skills later on your own canvases.  You can study Japanese Embroidery or learn amazing filling stitches and borders from Ann Strite-Kurz.  You can create Lois Kershner's landscapes or Terry Dryden's geometrics, all in a lovely garden setting with meals ready when you are. There's even a shop to pick up things you never knew you needed!

You can choose small pieces or complex, and never pay more than $225 in class kit fees (most kits are much less).  The study halls cost you nothing!  I can see why Callaway has the reputation of being the coziest and cheapest of all the seminar experiences.

If you want to treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime seminar that is small scale and friendly, or if you just need to go somewhere to be with others obsessed with needlework, Callaway is the place.

Me, I'm eyeing Once Upon a Time.  Wonder if I can get away next January?

Hold On To Your Needles! It's Callaway!

It's that time of year--the website for Callaway Gardens School of Needle Arts 2014 is up and available for drooling!

Callaway isn't affiliated with ANG or EGA, it is a separate entity in a lovely venue, the Callaway Gardens just north of Columbus, Georgia.  The classes are smaller, the atmosphere cozy, and the students return year after year.  If you want to become a Callaway alum, all the information you need is in the link above.

I hope you have a little time to browse the classes and dream over the long Memorial Day weekend.  Remember the stitchers who came before us, and think about enhancing your own stitching skills as you look at the wonderful lessons available to anyone who can manage to get away next January.

Callaway School of Needle Arts for 2012

I just received the following email announcing the January 2012 classes at Callaway.  I'm quoting it in full for everyone to enjoy and perhaps plan for.

"The Callaway Gardens School of Needle Arts website has been updated with the 2012 classes. Check it out!


The Callaway Gardens School of Needle Ats will be held January 15-25, 2012. This is a ten-day event, featuring classes with the top needlework teachers in the field. There are two sessions of classes; each session offering two-day and four-day classes. There are also some great one-day classes, which are scheduled for the day between the two sessions. Class offerings include canvas embellishment, silk and metal, geometrics, contemporary needlework, color and design, Japanese embroidery, beading and counted thread. There's something for everyone!


There is also a boutique run by Barbara Jackson, and The Dogwood Chapter of the EGA oversees the bookstore and Merchandise Night. All great places to find items that you can't live without! The Dogwood Chapter also runs a wonderful exhibit, which always features top-notch entries.


Callaway Gardens is located in Pine Mountain, GA, 75 miles southwest of Atlanta.

I always found armadillos interesting creatures but I never realized they make great frame weights until I saw what Gail Hendrix did with one in this new design for her Squiggee line of painted canvases.  Even if you are not really into these ancient creatures, you'll enjoy reading what Gail says about the creative process and her funny story of her brother-in-law versus the armadillo.

Callaway Report from Pat UPDATED

While my focus has been on the TNNA trade show, lots of other needlepoint fun has been happening.  This is the first week of two sessions of needle classes at Callaway Gardens.  Luckily, we have a reporter right there.  Pat is taking a class on canvas embellishment with Carole Lake and is reporting on the class, showing the two canvases she took along, and has just posted photos of her room at Callaway.  Start exploring here and read backwards to see what she's saying about her experience.
