NJNA and July 2025

The newest ANG newsletter for NJNA is out!

As always there is a lot of American Needlepoint Guild news, but if you aren't a member, they also cover new products that interest stitchers such as embroidery scissors with larger finger holes (good for those with arthritis), wearable ideas like baseball caps and mouse ears (!), and lots and lots of new designs.

The Bluebird

Melita copied a painted bluebird she received as a gift to create an original needlepoint.

She used a light coverage stitch over the shading in the background and stitched with a medium shade of the background cover, a tip she got from Amy Bunger.  I didn't know Amy had said this but in my own experience, a medium shade works very well in light coverage over complex shading.    You can also try a contrasting color or a metallic for a rich effect but this only works well on certain designs.  You'll have to experiment, but luckily light coverage stitches are easy to rip out if you don't like the effect.

How to Color Wash Your Needlepoint Canvas

I heard about this EGA tutorial (by Kate Gaunt) on how to color wash your needlepoint canvas on NP Nation.

Debbie Rowley of DebBee's Designs says she has used spray paint to color canvas for her counted thread designs.  Don't linger in a spot, though--keep moving.  Debbie says air brushing also works.

A New Trick for Beading Thread

I have been needlepointing for almost forty years, so it's rare that I hear about a trick to make things easier I didn't know, but Kathey has one--use pliers to mash the end of those fishing line-type beading threads so they go through the needle's eye easier.

Laundry Sign

This hilarious laundry sign from Shivering Sheep Designs is Brenda's latest project.

She'll be using a guide from Fireside Stitchery.  The center is mostly done, so now Brenda is concentrating on the border items.

And it's done!  Unlike laundry, it doesn't have to be redone, unless you want to stitch something for your laundry room yourself.

Marilyn Owen's Folding Ort Box and Ort Box with a Twist

Melita is stitching both Marilyn Owen's "Folding Ort Box" and her "Ort Box with a Twist" as ANG chapter projects.  These are from ANG's project books and have been very popular with ANG chapters.  Marilyn Owen emailed me that these are no longer available from ANG but you can email her at mlowen24@mac.com to order.

This posting has some great double running stitch tips for the blackwork.

Now for the lining for both boxes.

Melita is assembling her boxes.

If you want to stitch one of these ort boxes, you can order the design from Marilyn Owen herself as ANG is no longer including it in their current project book.  Email her at mlowen24@mac.com to order.

What's Happening at NJNA The End of June 2025?

As usual, the New Jersey Needle Artists ANG chapter has tons of ANG news, both local and national.  But that's not all!  You can visit the new people Moore Stitching is creating (the canvases are printed but very well done), the mahjong mat, Ruth's new Halloween tree club, and The Needlepointer's Halloween cookie club.  Warning:  Gone Stitching has made thread shopping a lot easier with their website update and Needlepoint.com has four new map canvases.  Hide those credit cards!  Especially since there's a new needlepoint store in Maine.

Let's Go Crazy with WireLace: The Movie

Ruth Schmuff has posted a tutorial on using WireLace on her Instagram account.

WireLace is available at the online bead shops and through Bedecked and Beadazzled (Ruth's store).  This jewelry site has all sorts of ideas how to use it.  (I might stuff beads or crystals inside or under it.)

Note that it comes in lots of colors and several widths but you can stretch it out quite a bit, even the narrowest size.

The National Academy of Needlearts has updated their website with a list of winners from their 2025 Exemplary.

Once you click on a photo, you can then use the right side arrow to move through the listing of winners in that section, see their work, and read a bit about it.

New Acrylic Trays

Everyone is coming up with new versions of acrylic trays for self-finishing.  Both The Needlepoint Finisher and KC Needlepoint offer trays that have scalloped edges.  KC Needlepoint will also have colored acrylic trays made.  Looks like both companies' trays have slots at the bottom where you slide your finished needlepoint into the bottom of the tray.

KC Needlepoint Has New Styles of Acrylic Trays

KC Needlepoint has announced new styles of acrylic trays available through the shop.

You can get colored acrylic sides, scalloped edges, and handles added.  I can't be certain, but after studying the photos I think your finished item slides into a slot at the bottom of the tray.

NJNA Happenings Mid-July 2025

The New Jersey Needle Artists chapter of ANG is reporting all the needlepoint news in their area, especially from ANG.  There is a lot of shop news this time, too, as well as a source for needlepointed padded coat hangers, new canvases from our favorite designers (Hey, they ALL are our favs!), and tips for items that do and don't need extra rows around the outside edge.

Stitch Faster with Quality plus Stocking Tips

Needlepoint.com just posted five tips to make your stitching go faster without sacrificing quality. These tips are a way of pushing their products, of course, but you will find yourself stitching faster if you have your threads organized and use tools to make the stitching easier.  Stitch guides are useful because they stretch your stitching muscles without your having to spend a lot of time researching Just The Right Stitch.

KC Needlepoint has also posted tips for stitching big projects like Christmas stockings.  I personally hate scroll bars but they sure make stitching large stockings easier.

Rita's Got Hit!

This little video is a sad one.

At least Rita's got their stock back.  Hopefully shop owners are sharing details about the thief so they can watch them when they appear in a shop.  I know NP Nation-member shop owners shared info about a shoplifter who was stealing from a great many shops several years ago and gradually put her out of business.

If you are browsing a shop and notice something, say something right then.  Small businesses can't take last if this happens.

How to Cut Threads to the Right Length

Lori at Waste Knot* shows you how to cut your threads to the perfect length in this short video.

I'm going to expand on what Lori says a bit.  Lots of folks want to stitch with long lengths.  If that works for you, great, but a longer length will not only rub the thread more and cause wear and loss of sheen, a longer length will often knot itself.  My godmother told me decades ago that the perfect thread length was from of your elbow to the tip of your fingers.  That is around 18 inches for most of us, which works quite well for me unless I need very long lengths for some of those Jean Hilton-type stitches or a darning background where I need to make it to the outside edge before I can end off.

In other words, 18 inches is a good length but not always.

*Full disclosure:  Waste Knot is my "local" shop.  I highly recommend it!

Poppy Monk Needlepoint's blog has diagramed what they describe as "five fun needlepoint background stitches."

The stitches are not your usual stitches, except for Diagonal Mosaic which is a personal favorite I use quite a bit.  Note that Poppy Monk recommends these for larger areas, although if you can do three full repeats, you can squeeze them in anywhere.

KC Needlepoint has come up with the perfect self-finishing tool--a double-ended gadget that helps you both lift the edges of leather self-finishing items and smooth your canvas down.

It's not as expensive as leather worker's burnishing tools, either.  Examples below in case you want something different:

Martha Washington's Shell Cushions

Mount Verson has posted an interesting short video about Martha Washington's dozen shell chair cushions.  I didn't know there were so many or that they were stitched over such a long period or that they included so many colors.  Fascinating!

You can see reproductions of the cushions in place at Mount Vernon and learn a bit more about them here-

Here are two more links from Mount Vernon's website.  I haven't found the video posted to Facebook on the Mount Vernon website yet but maybe it will end up there eventually.

Mount Vernon sells two cross stitch charts of this iconic pattern if you are interested.
