The app and stitches are the same (if you have the original iStitches volumes in digital form, don't worry--they still work just fine).  But the new and improved versions have new features such as Favorites and Folders, better navigation and search functions.  There is even a Master Index so you can find that favorite stitch in the volume where it is located.

Thread Organization Apps UPDATED

UPDATE:  Stitched with Ellen on Instagram looked at StitchPoint (free) and theNDLPTapp (costs $4.99/month) and decided on NDLPT because it allows you to scan your thread instead of typing in the information and also lets you count streter bars, magnets, and other project supplies.  StitchPoint is available for both iOS and Android but theNDLPTapp seems to be on iOS only.

X-Stitch App for Organization

Several members of NP Nation use PerformTec Ltd.'s X-Stitch App to organize their thread inventory and track projects.  It's available for both Apple and Android platforms and costs roughly $3 USD.  Built for cross stitchers, this has good ratings and is useful for any stitcher managing their inventory of threads and charts and canvases.  The security-minded should note that your data is stored in the cloud, making it potentially hackable.  And like all apps, you don't own the software, you only bought it to use on your current device.  If the app owners don't update it regularly, you will not be able to use it on a newer device in the future or even if there is a substantial upgrade in the software on your current device.  Buying computer software is really just renting it for devices that are compatible.

How to Find Needlepoint Shops When You Travel

Now that people are starting to go places again, I've been reminded that NeedleTravel.com has a website and an app to use to find needlework shops of all types when you are on the road.  The app is currently available both in the Apple and Google Play stores.

You can choose the type of shop you are interested in (such as quilt, embroidery, cross stitch, knitting, needlepoint, etc.) and then ask for all the shops they know about in a state or zip code you are about to visit.  Remember to check with the shop before you go to find the current hours, Covid restrictions, etc.  The information may not be accurate, after all.  For example, a needlepoint shop is listed in my town but it is actually knitting only and it's not very big and has quite limited hours.  I also see a Virginia shop listed that is about to close this summer.  Always call first.

NeedleTravel.com also has a handy book but it goes out of date much faster than their website or app.

New Approaches in 2020

I've noticed some shops are being particularly inventive in their marketing this winter. Louise's Needlework is now kitting discount canvases so that you can pick up some really cute small designs that come with threads at a very good price.  You can see what's currently available here among the beginner kits and the self-finishing leather goods.

BeStitched has just released an app for your mobile device.  When you download the app you will go straight to their website and see what canvases, trunk shows, series and books are currently available.  Unlike their website you can't visit their blog or see any of their videos.  If you turn on notifications, BeStitched will let you know about specials or new items.  It looks as if you can check on an order you've placed using the app as well.  It is a nice easy way to visit the shop and browse, especially for those who mostly use mobile devices.  Of course using a desktop or laptop and going to their website allows all the features.  You can get the app for either Android or iOS devices by searching the stores for "BeStitched Needlepoint."

Tiny Decisions

Breaking News: New Book App UPDATED

Meredith Willet's little spiral bound book, Knots, Fur and Turkey Work,  will be available as an app March 15, 2018.  It will cost $12.99.  You can find a link on The Meredith Collection’s website on March 15, or find it in the app store.  I am assuming this is Apple only and available only on iTunes but I don't know for certain.

Remember, apps that are not updated as your phones and tablets are updated constantly will cease to work.  That's how software is, it goes out of style eventually.  Buying an app is not like buying a book.  Just FYI.

iOS 11 ALERT

As Jan at Thread Medley reminds us, the newest version of the Apple mobile device operating system is now available for download. But you should be aware that of all the stitch book apps for Apple devices, Stitch Landscape from Little Shoppe Canvas Company will no longer open once you upgrade.  I don't know if they plan an update to a 64 bit version of their book.

Ruth (and Sandy) Updated Their Apps UPDATED

The apps for Ruth Schmuff's iStitches, volumes one through four, now are updated in iTunes so you no longer get the error message "this app may no longer work with future versions of the Apple operating system and that it may slow down your phone" when you open them.  The apps themselves work fine. Apple is trying to get older apps to update to be compatible with their newest operating system using this message.

Another friend just bought Stitches Volume Four and says it has lots of interesting stitches in it. I'm waiting for the iOS app myself (a little bird told me it might be out in June) as that's a better format for me, but it comes in two sizes for the shopper who either travels a lot or who wants a full sized book for visibility.

BREAKING NEWS: The Needlepoint Book App Is Ready UPDATED

The Needlepoint Book app is finally ready--and it is very buggy. Some folks can use it without problems, some cannot, some get a message that they need to pay $14.99 for the full version despite the publisher saying folks who bought the book last spring would have the app for free.   

Jo Christensen says you should have gotten an email from Simon & Schuster by now. Using their link, download the Needlepoint Book App Lite. Once that's done, tap on the three lines in the upper left corner of the screen. There will be an option there for you to sign in. Do that with the username and password that Simon & Schuster gave you in the email.  If you have problems, Jo says to email Simon and Schuster at touchstonemarketing@simonandschuster.com.

UPDATE:  Jo I. Christensen posted the following on Facebook on September 1, 2016--

"Regarding the application for the app that comes free with the book, I have learned something. When the form requests "the place purchased " it seems to be requesting something that the computer recognizes. So if you checked "other " adding the city, rather than, say, the name of a needlepoint shop, seems to work. If the computer likes what you tell it, you will get an automated return email almost immediately. (If you bought the book in a small town, try adding the nearest city. That is my guess.)  When you get the instructions, follow them exactly. Computers are dumb that way.   The app works better now!  Thanks again for your patience!!

P.S. I hear S&S won't be offering any other apps any time soon. Looks like a case of once burned, twice shy."

X-Stitch App for Inventory Control

Linda K. Reinmuller just posted this to the ANG email list in response to a question about thread inventory apps.  I am reprinting it here with Linda's permission.  For those of you who don't know Linda, she's a wonderful counted canvaswork designer with a special interest in computer design and charting programs.  Her blog (link on her website) has a lovely list of available stitch charting programs at the bottom of the page, by the way.

It has a lot of thread manufacturers listed, and from what I can tell also lists all the threads in that manufacturers colors, although I haven't checked every single one. The promo info claims it has 6000 thread selections that can be added.

It can also be used to add charts and linens to inventory. From looking at it, this can be adapted to canvas.

I have no affiliation with this other than being a techno-geek who tries to keep up with all the fabulous ways I can use technology to enhance my stitching.

Spreadsheets are straight forward, but it is always fun to have a new app to play with, and this one does appear to be very user friendly.

BREAKING NEWS: Jo Ippolito Christensen App Available (sort of)

Jo Christensen just posted on Facebook about the progress her publisher is making to make an app of her 2015 edition of The Needlepoint Book available.   The bottom line is an online version of what the app will be (which will sell for $14.95 if you didn't buy a copy of the book) is available for a short time online.  You can click on the stitch name to see a diagram and perhaps a grayscale stitched sample, but give it time to load.  Note that the rest of the book is not available online, just the stitch diagrams.

The app itself still has to be ok'd by the Google Play and iTunes stores.  Once it has made it through the approval process, you can use the app download code to access it from  iTunes and Google Play.  Here is where you get the download code if you bought a copy of the book already and haven't signed up to get it.  The download code will be sent to you when you can use it.  You won't get it until then.
