Stitch Beautifully An Essential Guide to Needlepoint UPDATED

Meredith Willet, owner of M's Canvashouse, the Meredith Collection, and an esteemed teacher, has released a book!  It is titled Stitch Beautifully An Essential Guide to Needlepoint.  Waste Knot has posted a short summary of the book on their Facebook page.

I'm going to quote Waste Knot here as many folks don't have a Facebook account--

"New book alert!  Stitch Beautifully: An Essential Guide to Needlepoint by Meredith Willett is a wonderful new book featuring foundational knowledge and techniques for both beginning and experienced stitchers. There are all kinds of tips and tricks, information about when and where to use different kinds of decorative stitches, and a glossary explaining dozens of terms — among other things!"

The Meredith Collection website describes the book as 8 x 10 inches "with a lay flat wire O binding."  It's starting to be available in all the shops, so call up your favorite to order.

Just as a reminder, Meredith has also just published "Needlepoint Quick Guide" which is a good guide for beginners.

UPDATE:  Stitch-Stash says this about the book (I am quoting part of their rave review in a shop e-newsletter)--

"You’ll find chapters covering:

• What is needlepoint

• Foundations for every stitch

• Needles, frames, and tools of the trade

• Threads 101

• Beginning and ending your threads

• Stitch families at a glance

• Decorative and compensating stitches

• How to choose the right stitch

• Beads, baubles, and bling

• Stitch bag essentials

• Tips I wish everyone had told me

…and so much more."

Tips for Stitching with Radiance Metallic UPDATED

The Wool and The Floss just posted another video, this time of Meredith Willett who know know as a teacher, designer, finisher, shop owner, and now a thread manufacturer.  In the video Meredith talks about using beeswax to keep Radiance from unraveling and how to strip the plies and recombine them to use just like a floss.

UPDATE:  Vicky of The Stitching Fox shows how to use wax on the tail of Radiance and explains it has a pop top, just like Kreinik.

Master Stitches From the Squad Volume 1: A Review

Last month I was gifted a copy of Master Stitches from the Squad Volume 1, written by long time needlepoint teachers Suzanne Howren, Tony Minieri and Meredith Willett.  Since Volume Two in this series just came out in late April, I thought I'd do a review of the first book to help you decide if you want to invest in either the first or the second (or both).  The cover of this book is shown on the left side.

The book is spiral bound with plastic coated covers to help protect it from use.   There is a seven page Table of Contents to help you find the sort of stitch you want.  There is also a short index in the back to direct you to the main sections.  It'll help you find composite stitches, darning patterns, diagonal stitches, Jean Hilton stitches, etc.

The book is mostly stitch diagrams (I counted 266, although some are variants of a stitch and others are mirror images, plus I didn't count the pin stitch, beading and blackwork diagrams.   The first section talks about using the various types of pin head stitches to start or end a thread and the second section covers beading and there are a few diagrams about blackwork patterns.  The authors are all very experienced teachers and I think the fact they included this basic information indicates that they often run into stitchers who need to know these things.

I took a photograph of two pages in the book so you could get a feel for the diagrams.  Usually there are multiple diagrams on each page but some of the larger stitches are just one to a page.  All are in black and white and gray.  There are no stitched examples.  Some of the stitches you will have seen before but most are the creations of the three authors.  Most (but not all) diagrams have a portion of the diagram numbered so you can see the order in which a stitch is worked.  Not all the diagrams are easy to read or comprehend.  It is actually the perfect book to stitch a sampler from.  That's the only way you'll understand how a stitch works and how it will look when it comes to many of these complex stitches.

Ridgewood Needlepoint's Stephanie Dresher-Mandelbaum used Jaipur Stitch (included in my photo of the diagrams above) for a heart canvas.  You can see her stitched sample here in two articles about half way down the page.  Look for the pink heart photos.  Stephanie has also re-diagrammed Jaipur Stitch.

This is not a book for beginners but it repays careful study and test stitching.

I expect Volume 2 will be much the same.

According to the back of Volume 1, the second volume covers Isolated Motifs, Knots, Laid Fillings, Line Stitches, Oblique Stitches, Open Patterns, Plaided Stitches such as Fern Stitches and Van Dyke Stitches, Pulled Work Patterns, Ray Stitches, Ribbon Stitches, Straight Stitches such as Brick Stitches and Hungarian Stitches, Tied Stitches, Trame, and Trellis Patterns.

Many shops will have both volumes by now.  The first shop I found with both is Bedecked and Beadazzled.

Needlenook of LaJolla appears to have both volumes as well.  Your favorite shop may also have them in stock--check there first.

I highly recommend these to the advanced stitcher who is willing to spend time puzzling out some of the more complicated and exotic stitches it covers.

The Turkeywork Tutorial Movie

Does turkeywork scare you to death? Not to worry, Meredith Willet of M's Canvashouse/Elizabeth Turner/Meredith Collection in conjunction with The Crewelwork Company has posted a video tutorial on YouTube.  In this demo she's working on linen but this stitch works on needlepoint canvas, too.  Just remember to work from the left to right.

Meredith Invents Bubble Technique

Meredith Willett of M's Canvashouse, Meredith Collection canvases, Big Buddies needle minder magnets and more has another invention to her name—how to create bubbles.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/NeedlepointNation/permalink/1659354074141744/

Elizabeth took an embellishment class from Meredith to help her with this Labors of Love Halloween figure and got the tip there.  You can see the untouched googly eye front and back in the picture and see how bubbles look with the eye positioned over them.  This is what the package looks like in a big box craft store.  Basically you peel off the back to create a clear bubble shape and put those on the canvas.
http://www.michaels.com/creatology-wiggle-eyes-flat-back/M10043499.html?dwvar_M10043499_count=118

Elizabeth is going to try to pierce holes in them to stitch them in place, but I am pretty sure you will need to glue these into position.  Just FYI.

Thanks, Meredith!

Breaking News: New Book App UPDATED

Meredith Willet's little spiral bound book, Knots, Fur and Turkey Work,  will be available as an app March 15, 2018.  It will cost $12.99.  You can find a link on The Meredith Collection’s website on March 15, or find it in the app store.  I am assuming this is Apple only and available only on iTunes but I don't know for certain.
https://www.wellesleyneedlepoint.com/product/knots-fur-turkey-work/

Remember, apps that are not updated as your phones and tablets are updated constantly will cease to work.  That's how software is, it goes out of style eventually.  Buying an app is not like buying a book.  Just FYI.

UPDATE:  I'm told Meredith has added more stitch diagrams to the app version of the book, which is a nice touch!

Bead Patterns

This week two different folks posted blog articles about using beads for surface pattern in backgrounds or on special areas of a canvas.  The first blog is by Mary Legallet and it showcases a vase on a Melissa Shirley design stitched by Melissa herself.  (Yes, she stitches, too and she does a beautiful job!)  Beads are used to create a lovely glassy pattern on a vase, with a touch of thread to highlight the zigzag pattern and add more texture.
http://www.whimsicalstitch.com/whimsicalwednesdays/2017/04/19/beyond-bling

The second blog is from Vicky DeAngelis who is working on a Penny MacLeod design from The Collection using a guide by Meredith Willett.  If you can tear yourself away from the cute cat in the photos, look at the background of Vicky's canvas.  There are bead patterns making up the raindrops in the background stitches.  It's subtle due to Vicky's thread choices but the pattern is definitely there.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/a-big-finish-for-me/

Beads aren't just scattered here and there on these canvases—they make up substantial portions of each design.  The vase and the background would not be the same without them.

As Mary points out, if you are on TeamFullCoverage, this may not be for you, but if you want to be subtle in your patterns, beads might be a fabulous choice.

Natasha's Feet UPDATED

Natasha's Needlepoint (which is a shop located on Pawleys Island in South Carolina), just posted a series of seven unusual Christmas ornaments on their Facebook page.  The ornaments are all feet!  Reindeer, Santa, elves, gingerbread men, Mrs. Santa--you name it!  They are beautifully stitched and Christmas charming to the max.  I don't know if these are a club or who the designer is but they are terrific.

Christmas in August is so much fun!

UPDATE:  Thanks to Martin's sharp eyes I know that the ornaments are all from the Elizabeth Turner Collection, and the guides are probably all from Meredith Willett.  Thank you, Martin!
