Buttons from Patty Paints

The metal button forms with canvases from Patty Paints can be displayed many ways:  ornaments on a stick, as magnets, as hanging ornaments with frames.

Park Avenue Needlepoint is having a trunk show so their Facebook page has more photos to inspire you.

Button, Button, Who Needs a Button?

Need buttons for that final touch for your canvas or for finishing a piece?  Button Bird is a good place to browse.  They also carry Japanese kimono fabric if you need a small piece for the back of a pillow or an ornament series or to add to a section of a geometric canvas.

Note that they are an online store in California and that mailing from California is very slow right now.

The Stainless Steel Short Laying Tool (and More)

Mary Corbet has a rave review of a new, short stainless steel laying tool from the UK.  I personally prefer short laying tools so this is a Must Have for me.  You may prefer the feel of wooden laying tools or want something that doesn't have to ship from the UK.
https://www.needlenthread.com/2019/10/jennys-little-laying-tool-stiletto.html

UPDATE:  Jenny's found someone to continue making the steel stiletto to her father's design.
https://www.instagram.com/p/DVOSNp4jFWJ/?img_index=1

However, when I visit the tool section of Jenny's new website I have lust in my heart for everything.
https://jennyadin-christieembroidery.com/product-category/hand-made-tools

By the time this publishes, her kits section should be available.  Don't miss the eye candy there.

Or the Cornish hand made buttons and broaches that a side trail led me to.

Need a Button or Charm?

If you have a canvas that needs a button or charm, take a look at the range available from Susan Clarke Originals.  Make sure you have your favorite beverage and some time to browse before you click on the link to their website.
http://susanclarkeoriginals.com

I mentioned this because Abigail Cecile asked for a place to find cute charms.  I can't post a comment to her blog —the process involves setting up a new account with SquareSpace which I don't want to do—so I thought I'd just tell everyone and maybe someone will mention it to Abby.

The Owl's Tummy Project

Ruth Schmuff's summer mystery class was Sandra Vargas's "Owl with Key." The owl's tummy was covered with an elaborate beaded flower with a Czech button in the middle.  Now Ruth has made a standalone kit of this beaded flower for those who want to have a stunning pin or who just want to play with something totally different.
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2017/08/want-to-make-flower.html

Czech buttons are widely available on eBay so you can learn the process from Ruth's kit, then do another with a button of your choosing.  For example, here's a stunner owl button.

Helpful Finishing Hints

Today I ran across three helpful finishing hints online.   3 Kittens in Minnesota posted about using mini socks as silverwear holders for holiday parties in their latest shop newsletter.

Carolyn's student at Chaparrel decided to stack mother-of-pearl buttons in her corners so she wouldn't have to compensate them.  Genius!

Barbara posted photos of the backs of her pillows on Facebook.  She's doing a series of fun Annie Lane canvases and put their titles on the back side.  Use the right arrow to see the other pillow back.

Susan goes to the flea market.

Attention Debbie Mumm Fans!

Are you a fan of Debbie Mumm's art, particularly the painted canvases that Melissa Shirley produces?
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/galsearch/?searchstring=debbie+mumm&searchlist=&Search=Search&dosearch=

Then you will be thrilled to hear that Wichelt Imports offers cross stitch and perforated paper designs from Debbie's artwork--and they have buttons, pins and needle magnets!  I think the right button or pin would be the perfect finishing touch to that cute painted canvas from Debbie.  Or if you are a needle magnet collector, there are some wonderful ones available to enhance your stitching fun.  Enjoy browsing.
http://www.wichelt.com/debbiemumm.html?all=all

Wichelt is a distributor but Sew and Sew in the UK has a huge stock of buttons for sale.

Julie's X Stitch has some of her needle minders.

Apparently the Debbie Mumm magnets and buttons are under the Mill Hill name, so Google may help you uncover more sources.

I Need Buttons and Charms. Do You?

If you happen to love adding buttons, charms and fancy beads or trims (or all of the above) to your stitching, or you just happen to need something very special for a piece, you will have to talk to Carolyn Hedge Baird at Chaparral.  I heard someone in the peanut gallery ask, "Why?"  Here's why!
http://stephsstitching.blogspot.com/2015/03/doodads.html

I don't know about you, but I'm lusting after that bunny button, the one with wings!  If you need any of these type things, here's Chaparral's contact information.
http://www.ndlpt.com

If you need a personal consultation, I suggest you use Carolyn's Facebook page (look for Needlepointing in Your Nest, that's Carolyn) to get in touch.  Browse her photo albums to see the huge range of what is available.  No drooling on the keyboard!

Button, Button, Who Has the Buttons?

Sometimes you need just the right button for your canvas.  If you want to browse what's available online, Three Stitches in Texas has tons of buttons from Just Another Button Company on their website.
http://www.3stitches.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5_578

Threadneedle Street is another great needlepoint shop with a large selection of buttons on their website.  Click on Buttons and then browse the left side of the page to select from Susan Clarke, Mill Hill and Just Another Button Company treats.  Before you start looking for the perfect finishing button, though, read the information in the center of the page for washing instructions, sizes, and other important details.

Cute as a Button

Linda has just finished a cute snowman ornament and posted a photo. Look at the candy cane button! Isn't that the cutest?!

Buttons sometimes are the perfect finishing touch.  Don't have a fabrics shop or big box crafts emporium locally?  Shop online.

Finishing Friday

How did it get to be Friday already?!!  Time flies when Christmas is only fifty-five days away! To distract us from all we have to do before Dec. 25, here is a lovely little stand up Santa with gorgeous gingerbread button trim.  Kudos to the finisher!

Ridgewood has a sweet snowman ornament, beautifully done.

Stephanie reminds us why we love Petei designs (and why we are glad Painted Pony picked up the line).

Pocket Full of Stitches has all sorts of wonderful finishing for us to enjoy.  I don't know what's my favorite, the Halloween items, the Christmas stockings or that wonderful dog pillow!

Needle Nicely reminds us that a older piece of stitching can be redone to give it new life.

Here's one last Halloween Hurrah--straight from the magic fingers of The Needlepointer's finishers.

Baby Bling Buttons

Several shops came back from the February 2013 TNNA trade show in Long Beach with tiny crystal buttons with baby shanks. Needle in a Haystack has just posted photos and great information about what I call the baby bling buttons.
http://needlestack.typepad.com/whats_new/2013/05/crystaletts-bling-for-your-stitching.html

Their real name is Crystaletts.  They are very small (3mm) rhinestone buttons with tiny loop shanks you can push through a hole on your canvas to secure on the back.  NIAH has stocked several colors of the buttons with mostly gold settings, although they come in nickel or black metal frameworks as well.  They would look very nice as buttons on Santa's suit or as the center of fantasy flowers.  Time to rummage through your stash and see who needs baby bling buttons!

Threadneedle Street Has a Button for YOU!

I subscribe to all the shop newsletters I can find. Yesterday's email brought me one from Threadneedle Street in Issqauah, Washington. This is my go-to shop for all things silk gauze and for books. It is a wonderful place and Denise the owner really knows her silks. The newsletter lists the new thread colors in Gloriana silks, Impressions, Soie Crystale, ThreadWorX floss, Neon Rays+, Crescent Colours and Weeks Dye Works flosses.

Denise also announced that Anchor is discontinuing colors in their perle cottons. I'm going to quote her in full here for the benefit of folks who have projects that use the Anchor perle cotton:

"Anchor is in the process of discontinuing a fairly large number of pearl cotton colors. We have never stocked much of the Anchor #3 pearl cotton, but in Germany they have discontinued nearly all available size 3 colors, and as a result, the US will no longer import size 3 Anchor at all. In size 5 pearl cotton, Anchor is discontinuing about one third of the colors. In size 8 pearl cotton they are also discontinuing about one third of the colors, and in size 12 pearl cotton, they will discontinue 12 out of 47 colors, leaving only 35 colors still available. Some inventory still remains of discontinued colors, but if you have a project requiring Anchor pearl cotton, this is a good time to check availability of colors and purchase any colors slated to be discontinued."

If you need more information, call or email Threadneedle Street. Please note that the Anchor floss colors are unchanged. Only their line of perle cottons is effected. Here is the website for Threadneedle Street.
http://www.threadneedlestreet.com/

The shop stocks a lot of books, including the new English Embroidery catalogue from the museum exhibit, SuZy Murphy's new Mini Stitches book, and of course buttons galore. above the the newest and oddest button in their collection--a bedpan button!

Well, you can't say Threadneedle Street doesn't make every effort to satisfy their customers.

By the way, I forgot to mention that if you visit Threadneedle Street's online shop, you can see their new painted canvases by clicking on Needlepoint at the top of the page, then finding 2009 Part I on the left side of the new page and clicking there.

The StitchIts Sweater Collection

My trip last week to Needlewoman East included a careful inspection of the current trunk show. No matter how good the pictures are you see online, nothing beats seeing painted canvases in person. So I look over all the NW East trunk shows carefully any time I get to visit. I don't want to miss anything!

This time the trunk show on display was by StitchIts, not a designer I know much about. They specialize in simple designs, not the realistic canvases I prefer. Not my cup of tea usually but I enjoyed their little sweater patterns. I photographed my favorites for you to see. Looks like they are on 18 count canvas, and all are in primary colors with contrasting polka dots in an all-over pattern. Each sweater comes with a series of 2-4 themed buttons in matching colors, and it is the buttons that set these designs apart. If you look closely you'll see the teal green wizard-castle-dragon buttons, the brown dog with a white bone, the three elfs on a blue sweater, and the tiny Nativity Mary, Jospeh and Baby Jesus. [NOTE: This image is on my main blog. The link is below.]

I've put a second image on my mirror blog (above) that shows the bright green cowboy boot, hat and cactus sweater; the one in blue decorated by the toy ship/airplane/truck; the red bowling pins and ball; and finally the brown trout and fish basket sweater. These are an easy and quick stitch with outstanding embellishments. There are a great many more of these (I saw at least 25 different sets of sweater canvases and of course their line has much more than sweaters), all very cute and all a perfect easy present to stitch for someone, or even for yourself.

By the way, if you love buttons with your canvases, Mindy and Squiggee also offer great buttons that match or enhance a painted canvas design.
