The Snag Nab-It Revisited (and a Give-away) UPDATE

Snag Nab-Its

Back before Thanksgiving I mentioned the Snag Nab-It which is used to pull stray thread tails back to the rear of a canvas.  This is essentially a long needle with a pointed end and a roughed up end that is supposed to pull a stray thread to the back side of your canvas.  You insert the pointed needle in the hole that has a thread tail sticking out, then gently pull the Snag Nab-It through.  The rough end catches the thread and pulls it to the back side along with the needle.

When I wrote that post I heard from Jane B. that her local JoAnn's Fabrics carries them in three separate sizes.  I had no idea that they varied in diameter, but this is important since the Fiber Talk podcast just mentioned that a Snag Nab-it can tear your ground fabric if you are not careful.  This is less likely to be a problem with needlepoint canvas than linen but you still want to be careful.  I managed to find two different lengths of the Snag Nab-It pictured online here.
https://www.shop.com/Crafts/dritz+snag+nab+it

Jane sent me an assortment of Snag Nab-Its in three diameters.  They are all about the same length but you can easily see that some of the needles are thicker than others.  With her help and encouragement I am offering one of the Snag Nab-Its as a giveaway.   Post a comment here (or email me at chilly hollow at hot mail dot com if Google won't let you use Comments) and I will do a random drawing in a week's time, on February 28.  The winner will need to mail me a stamped, self-addressed envelope and will receive the single Snag Nab-It in the package in the photo above as a present from Jane.

Thanks for all your help, Jane!

UPDATE:  The contest is over and Jane's about to draw the winner, to be announced on March 1st.

Colorful Amalgam Contest for 2018-2019

Natalia Frank just posted this on Facebook about a contest she is running over the next year:

I would like to invite anyone who is interested to participate in the stitching contest Colorful Amalgam 2018-2019.  The contest starts on February, 1st, 2018 and will end on February, 28th, 2019. March of 2019 will be given to finish the carpet (blocking, fringing, or framing, etc…).

At the beginning of each month, starting this February, I'll post a part of the pattern of the carpet that is supposed to be stitched during a following month. Each part will be charted with black symbols which are supposed to be "colored" by you. There will be 12 parts with NON-repeatable motifs that will form a gorgeous carpet at the end that YOU painted!

There are no rules or restrictions towards this creative concept, but two.
1. The carpet should be stitched on silk gauze. If stitched on 40 count the finished size of the rug will be approx. 6" x 8".
2. You need to sign up with a Facebook open to public group Colorful Amalgam and post the pictures of stitching progress each month. If you don't have a Facebook account, forward your images to me and I'll gladly post them on the group's page.

A winner, that will be chosen by public vote in June 2019, will receive a main prize of $200.
You can download Section 1 February 2018 from my website
http://www.dollhouseneedlepoint.com/contest

Here is a link to Facebook group Colorful Amalgam
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1883206485032036/

I started this rug on 48 count.
Let's have fun! It will be so interesting to see rugs with the same design looking different.

I hope that folks try this.  It's a fun way to celebrate counted work on silk gauze.

Needle Dames Contest Winner Announced

Time to announce the winner of the contest for the Needle Dames magnet called Phoenix!*
https://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2017/04/introducing-needle-dames.html

I collected all the names of folks who entered the contest in a list and asked Ginny Stapleton, the owner of Needle Dames, to pick a number at random, then the winner was that number on the list.  Ginny picked the number of Pat Murray!  Pat, can you email your mailing address to me at chillyhollow at hot mail dot com so I can get Phoenix in the mail to you?  Thanks!

If Phoenix wasn't your style or you didn't happen to be the winner, you can always shop for the perfect person to mind your needles at Ginny's Etsy store.  New personalities were added this week, giving you 42 faces to browse for the perfect person to hang out with you while you stitch.  Currently "Fantasy" is my favorite.  Which one is yours?

*Actually it is past time but we have two new puppies and I lost track of time trying to herd them.  Sorry!

Picking the Winners

Speaking of Jolly Red, the company ran a contest in December, asking customers to send in a photo of their piece, either finished or just started.  Then they asked local shop owners in their small Somerset, England town to pull names out of a hat.  You can read all about it here.
https://www.jollyred.co.uk/service-and-a-smile-in-langport/

The contestants are in a photo album on Jolly Red's Facebook page if you want to take a look.

It's a fun way to learn a bit about the tastes of your customers and showcase your town!

Belt Design Contest

Folks who always wanted to design their own canvas might be interested in Needlepaint.com's Design A Belt contest.   They have posted a video about designing your own belt you might find very helpful.  Of course this is to promote their business since if you love the design, you will want to buy it on one of their canvases, but if you win the contest, this will be free.
