If you have one of those, Simon and Schuster will replace your book with a copy that has the color pictures.
Please contact:

We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
Please share this message so we can reach everyone one of these books. Thanks very much!

The Needlepoint Book (Both Editions)

If you only can buy one needlepoint book, The Needlepoint Book by Jo Ippolito Christensen is the one to get as it covers everything, although not all bits in detail.  There are several editions and Melita talks about them both.

Frankly, either is good, so look for a used copy of either for your stitching library or to gift to a friend.

Books with Stitch Diagrams AND Photographed Examples UPDATED

A lot of people would like books of stitch diagrams to have accompanying photos of the stitches.  Because of the cost, this is rare, but I've assembled a list of books and sites that do have photos and found links to show the covers and titles to help you find a copy.  Do a careful search.  Copies are available at a variety of price points.  Be very careful of Amazon offerings as sellers there often charge a premium price for needlepoint books.  You'll almost always find them cheaper at a needlepoint shop.

Jo I. Christensen's The Needlepoint Book - all three editions have small black and white photos.

All of Gone Stitching's books have color photos of their stitches.

Instagram's "Needlepoint Notebook" is all colored photos of stitches with a note as to the book and page number where it was found. There are NO diagrams.  You have to look them up in the book where they were found.

Sherri Lantz's Pageant of Pattern - now out of print, has black and white stitched examples of many (but not all I don't think) of the stitches in the book

SuZy Murphy's books (now out of print) have stitched examples in the back, some in color, some in black and white.

Whimsical Stitch's blog posts a stitch diagram each week (sometimes more often) with a colored photo of the stitch.  Mary Legellet also has now written a book called Mary's Whimsical Stitches that includes the blog stitches and others that have not appeared on her blog but no photos. Stitches that came from her blog have a URL for her Instagram account however, so you can type that out in your browser to see an example of those.

If you know of stitch diagram books with photos of the stitches worked, please let me know so I can add them to the list.  Email me at chilly hollow at hot mail dot com.  Thanks.

UPDATE:  Another book with diagrams and stitch photos is Susan Sturgeon Roberts' Complete Guide to Needlepoint Stitches.  There are 400 stitches included.  It is out of print but a newer book is called the Needlepoint Dictionary of Stitches.  It has 250 stitches and photos and is available as a Kindle ebook (second link below).

The Boston College Art Club Show Has Needlepoint

The faculty and staff of Boston College have started an annual Art Club Show.  This year's showing includes a needlepoint collaboration between the designer who painted the pattern and the needleworker who stitched it.  It is called "Discernment."
http://www.bc.edu/bc-web/bcnews/art-and-culture/fine-arts/art-club-exhibit-fall-2016.html

This article shows a bit of the piece and talks about its inspiration from St. Ignatius' writings.  There is a link at the bottom of the page to see more art from the exhibit including the full view of "Discernment" on Facebook.   If you happen to be in Boston now, the show will be at Carney Hall's First Floor Gallery until December 2 at the BC campus.

Many thanks to Jo C. I. who mentioned this on Facebook.

The author of the app for the newest version of The Needlepoint Book says if your app is freezing, please email the publisher. touchstonemarketing@simonandschuster.com.  Jo Christensen has nothing to do with the apps and cannot fix anything that is going wrong.  She's very sorry, but it's not her area.

Need a New Purse?

Need a new purse? Jo I. Christensen found one on sale and posted about it on Facebook.
https://www.therealreal.com/products/women/handbags/shoulder-bags/chanel-precious-symbols-needlepoint-tote-3

Personally I think you could stitch a nicer one and pay for it to be finished by a very expensive finisher and still pay less than that!

How about this one?  Still, we can do better ourselves for much less, even for very high end finishing.

BREAKING NEWS: The Needlepoint Book App Is Ready UPDATED

The Needlepoint Book app is finally ready--and it is very buggy. Some folks can use it without problems, some cannot, some get a message that they need to pay $14.99 for the full version despite the publisher saying folks who bought the book last spring would have the app for free.

Jo Christensen says you should have gotten an email from Simon & Schuster by now. Using their link, download the Needlepoint Book App Lite. Once that's done, tap on the three lines in the upper left corner of the screen. There will be an option there for you to sign in. Do that with the username and password that Simon & Schuster gave you in the email.  If you have problems, Jo says to email Simon and Schuster at touchstonemarketing@simonandschuster.com.

If you are feeling lucky, here is the link furnished by the publisher to the download for Android systems on the Google Play store.  Please note that you will need the code from the email from the publisher to download the free app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.needlepointbookapp.lite&hl=en

Here is the link furnished by the publisher to the download for iOS systems on iTunes.  Please note that you will need the code from the email from the publisher to download the free app.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-needlepoint-book-app-lite/id1085103381?mt=8

UPDATE:  Jo I. Christensen posted the following on Facebook on September 1, 2016--

"Regarding the application for the app that comes free with the book, I have learned something. When the form requests "the place purchased " it seems to be requesting something that the computer recognizes. So if you checked "other " adding the city, rather than, say, the name of a needlepoint shop, seems to work. If the computer likes what you tell it, you will get an automated return email almost immediately. (If you bought the book in a small town, try adding the nearest city. That is my guess.)  When you get the instructions, follow them exactly. Computers are dumb that way.   The app works better now!  Thanks again for your patience!!

P.S. I hear S&S won't be offering any other apps any time soon. Looks like a case of once burned, twice shy.
"

Jo also added quoted this message from her publisher--

"Dear NEEDLEPOINT BOOK fans,
Regarding THE NEEDLEPOINT BOOK APP—
Once again, on behalf of Touchstone Books, please accept our sincere apologies for the lengthy delays in getting the bugs worked out of the companion NEEDLEPOINT BOOK APP.
We’re happy to report that a new update of the app – Version 1.5.0 – is now available for iPhone and iPad on the iTunes App Store and for Android on the Google Play App Store. This update should resolve the various issues and bugs you’ve reported to us (thank you).
Also, we’ve added a FAQ page to the app website, which includes instructions on how to retrieve your login and password.
You can view the FAQ page here:  http://www.needlepointbookapp.com/faq/

BREAKING NEWS: Jo Ippolito Christensen App Available (sort of)

Jo Christensen just posted on Facebook about the progress her publisher is making to make an app of her 2015 edition of The Needlepoint Book available.   The bottom line is an online version of what the app will be (which will sell for $14.95 if you didn't buy a copy of the book) is available for a short time online.  You can click on the stitch name to see a diagram and perhaps a grayscale stitched sample, but give it time to load.  Note that the rest of the book is not available online, just the stitch diagrams.
http://needlepointbookapp.com/stitch/

The app itself still has to be ok'd by the Google Play and iTunes stores.  Once it has made it through the approval process, you can use the app download code to access it from  iTunes and Google Play.  Here is where you get the download code if you bought a copy of the book already and haven't signed up to get it.  The download code will be sent to you when you can use it.  You won't get it until then.

Jo Christensen is touring shops, promoting the 2015 version of her Needlepoint book and giving classes. The class she did at Enriched Stitch in Connecticut is very interesting.  It gave Suzie permission to do something she should have done a long time ago.

The Needlepoint Book, Updated for 2015

The long-awaited 2015 edition of Jo Ippolito Chriestensen's Needlepoint book is out.  The publisher kindly provided me with a review edition.*  It's a hardback, with good quality glossy paper and a sturdy binding.  It will last for years of use.  For those who prefer spiral bindings, the author had a copy cut and bound into a spiral edition at a copy shop and says you don't lose any information in the process, which is good to know.  I don't like spiral bindings but I know many people prefer them in their stitching books.
http://books.simonandschuster.com/The-Needlepoint-Book/Jo-Ippolito-Christensen/9781476754086

The latest edition of Needlepoint is like the first two but with more stitches and more chapters. It really should be called the Needlepoint Encyclopedia because that's what it is--an encyclopedic volume on all aspects of needlepoint.   It touches a bit on almost everything in short discussions. Want to know how to block your stitching? Want to learn how to clean needlepoint? Want to know how to frame it? Want to know about shadow stitching? Want to learn a bit about beads and sequins and crystals? Silk ribbon embroidery? Want to learn design and color theory and how to apply it to your stitching?   This is the book.

A lot is rather esoteric (does anyone use rabbit glue any more?) but the information is there if you want to learn about it.  Many of the items discussed such as blocking and finishing may not be something you care about but if you want to try this at home, it gives good information.

Nothing is too detailed, it's a book that mentions everything (or tries to) without going into great depth on any one thing except the planning/color theory/design theory chapters. With "over 430" stitches, including pulled stitches which are hard to find if you don't have Pageant of Pattern, this book has lots and lots of stitches diagrammed. It probably has more stitch diagrams than any other book I own. The stitches that are diagrammed in her book are not the fanciest available, although she's added more Jean Hilton type "string art" stitches and several types of silk ribbon embroidery stitches. The black and white diagrams themselves are fairly detailed with special starting and ending symbols and arrows to show what direction to pull the pulled stitches in or to help you understand which layers are on top, etc. That's excellent information for pulled stitch diagrams in particular, although I found the symbols confusing at first until I got used to them.

The diagrams are black and white as are the stitched sample photos for each diagram.  The samples appear to be done in wool, which shows the book's age. The bulk of these were stitched in 1978 for the first edition and it would be a lot of work to update them.  (Since stitches change appearance according to the type and weight of thread used it may well be useless to show other threads anyway.)  There is a lot about the various types of thread, including how to test threads for their fiber content with the burn test, which I found interesting, but it's not nearly as good a resource for threads as the Thread Thesaurus or even the three Stitches for Effect books. But that's typical of the Needlepoint book--it tries to cover everything without going into great depth on anything. Mrs. Christensen says just enough to give a stitcher the basics on many, many topics.  It really is like an encyclopedia.

Stitches are divided into types so that all the boxed or tied or straight stitches are in one chapter together.  My favorite part of the book has always been the charts in the beginning of each section    that detail which stitches in that section cover well, tend to distort the canvas, make good accents, are fast or slow to stitch, etc.  The first five or so years after I taught myself to needlepoint I made very good use of this part of the book.

I found the design and color theory section confusing but that may just be me. The author touches on a lot of information and this is a topic that is really complicated. Like the earlier editions, this is an attempt to gather everything needlepoint-related in one place. It's a good book for someone who wants only one stitching book, or for someone who is curious about all the topics around needlepoint, but I am not certain someone who has the other editions should buy this unless they use the earlier editions constantly. If you do that, then you'll want the new edition. Someone outside of the USA who is really into needlepoint but can't easily get books about the topic will find this a very useful purchase as it has a bit about almost everything. A brand new stitcher with a ton of questions and no shop or local stitches to help also will find this a good buy as she talks about tools, how to put a canvas on stretcher bars and scroll bars, needles and laying tools, etc.

It's an amazing amount of work but it is a dry, technical book at heart, a reference book.  You won't be reading this for anything except learning the basics about this or that topic or to find a stitch that will work for your next project or to look up how to do a stitch.  This is THE reference book on needlepoint, no question about that.  When stitch guides first started becoming popular, many stitch guide writers often omitted stitch diagrams because they could tell folks to check page 299 of the Needlepoint book to learn how to stitch a Mosaic Stitch.

I enjoyed the tiny color plates. Hopefully the eBook and app version (when it comes out in June sometime) allow one to see more. You really can't tell much from the tiny photos.  Many were old friends, things I'd seen online that the stitchers have shared or exhibited but many were new to me.  Which brings me to the topic of the eBook and app versions of the 2015 edition.

The electronic editions come in two types (eBook and app) and several flavors (Kindle, Nook, iTunes, GooglePlay store).  The eBook is already available for the Kindle, Nook and Apple devices at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the iTunes store.  Some folks have had trouble with the Kindle edition (no stitch diagrams!) but many have downloaded the Kindle version without any problems so this is most likely a hitch in the connection for the download.  I haven't heard from anyone with the Nook eBook, so please comment below if you have it (or email me at chillyhollowathotmaildotcom if Comments doesn't work for you).

NOOK UPDATE:  Donna writes--"I bought the book on my Nook and the diagrams are large enough to be useful to me. Using it in my Nook app on my phone, not large enough." Thanks, Donna!  Never occurred to me that on the Nook a book is legible but on the phone Nook app, it isn't.

KINDLE UPDATE:  Jan writes about the Kindle version for her Kindle Fire HDX--Thanks, Jan.
"Hi Jane! I bought the Kindle edition from Amazon UK - on a Kindle Fire HDX, the diagrams are so tiny as to be almost unusable; I also have the same problem on my (rather elderly) Windows desktop. I ended up buying the book again in hardback as previous editions have been an essential part of my stitching library. Regards from Jan in the UK."

The iTunes eBook seems to be fine --I've compared the iBook sample from the iTunes store to the real book and the only flaw I see is that the links to the color pages don't work because you don't have the entire book in the sample, just the first 44 pages. I personally like eBooks because you can search them, jump to a colored plate referenced in the text and carry this very heavy book around with you in a small handheld device instead of having it take up space on your bookshelf.

The app isn't out yet.  The pre-publication publicity we all saw everywhere said that folks who bought the hardback or eBook version (apparently a paperback isn't planned) would get a code enabling them to download the app for free in either an Apple or Android version. Simon and Schuster told the author this on May 5--

"The Needlepoint Book App will be free to download for customers who purchased the print or ebook. The app is still under construction; expected launch date is sometime in June 2015. Customers should visit www.needlepointbookapp.com and enter their information. S and S will notify you with your download code as soon as the app is made available."

I am told when you go to the website, you have to click on a blue button labeled "Retrieve Download App Code."  Enter your name, email address and the date and location you purchased the book plus a purchase code and the publisher will get back to you when the app is ready.   I don't know what is meant by a purchase code but most folks seem to be signing up for the app ok.

*By the way, the publisher has also sent me a second copy of the Needlepoint Book to be given away.  If you would like to be entered in a random drawing for a copy of the 2015 edition of Mrs. Christensen's book, please either add your name to the Comments below or email me at chillyhollow at hotmail dot com.  I'll collect all the names and pick one using a random number generator next week and announce the winner on June 8 and get it in the mail to the lucky winner on June 9.   It is now too late to get your name in the drawing as it is 6/8 now.  Sorry!

Many thanks to Jo Christensen and Simon and Schuster for doing this!

Donna posted a fun update about the 2015 edition of Jo I. Christensen's Needlepoint Book--she shows off the colored photo of the piece she contributed for the book that is black and white inside its pages.  Who knew the colors were so pretty!?  Thanks, Donna.  It's fun to see more of the amazing needlepoint that illustrates the book.

Third Edition of Jo Ippolito Christensen's Needlepoint Book Out Today

Today's the day when the third edition of Jo I. Christensen's Needlepoint book is officially on sale.  Because this is the third edition, folks are curious if they need to pick up the 2015 version if they have the 1978 or 1999 edition.
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-needlepoint-book-jo-ippolito-christensen/1118892276?ean=9781476754086

Here's what the author says about the new version on Facebook:

"There is a tremendous amount of new information. In addition, I have completely reorganized almost all of the information, merging the old with the new. Part Two: Interpreting the Painted Canvas discusses all of the stitcher's decisions from the purchase of a canvas straight through to finishing it off with embellishments. I think that this order is more of what we stitchers actually encounter with each canvas. Dozens of people have spent countless hours and dollars contributing to this edition. The free app from the publisher is a very nice addition. The 2nd edition was 448 pages; the 3rd is 576. (Amazon has it wrong.) The 3rd edition has 1680 illustrations---225 new. I think there are 63 new stitches for a total somewhere around 450??? The number of color pages has doubled from 16 to 32. There are 132 or 133 color photos; the 2nd edition had 54 (I think). With a digital version you should be able to see more of the stitches and the texture. There is more of everything, just about. I hope you all like it!"

There are downloadable editions for the Kindle and Nook and there is an app available in both the Android and Apple stores.  You should know that the app version "features the “Stitches,” “Color,” and “Ideas” sections of THE NEEDLEPOINT BOOK in a digital format.  It will be available on the book’s on-sale date April 28 for Apple and Android products.  With purchase of the book, a code is included to download the app for free."

The app information came from the publisher when I asked about the app.  Hope all this helps you make up your mind!

News from the World of Needlepoint UPDATED

There's been a delay in the publication of the new edition of Jo I. Christensen's Needlepoint Book. Instead of coming out this fall, it won't be published until the spring of 2015. I have heard it is going to be in hardback, not paperback, which probably accounts for the delay.

UPDATE:  According to Amazon, the hardback version is still coming out the end of November 2014.  The Kindle edition will be ready in the spring.  In other words, who knows when it will be available?!

In other news, Ehrman Tapestry just announced they are reissuing the vegetable series from Kaffe Fassett due to popular demand.  You can see them as well as the similar fruit series here.

Need Jo's Autograph?

The Needlepoint Book by Jo Ippolito Christensen is THE classic encyclopedia of needlepoint.   I bought the 1976 version and read it cover to cover more than once until I gave my copy to a stitching neighbor when the 1999 edition came out.  I thumb through the newer version quite a bit when I have a problem or just need inspiration.    It covers everything and has a huge number of wonderful stitches diagrammed for your stitching pleasure.  This is the main book I relied on when teaching myself to needlepoint.

There is a 2014 edition planned for this fall,  but stitching bibliophiles will want to grab autographed copies of the 1999 version while Ridgewood has them in stock.

Gossip Central

The latest gossip that little birds whispered to me--Jo Iooplito Christensen is planning to release the third edition of The Needlepoint Book in October August 2014.   It is revised and updated with fresh and interesting new photographs.  I can't wait!

(Thanks for the update!)

I've also heard that next year sometime a famous teacher is going to publish a "how to write your own stitch guide" article in Needlepoint Now.  I can't wait again!
