The Stitch Sloth

Stitch Sloth is organizational software for needlepointers.  You can organize and track projects and post progress photos.  There is a stash inventory system, too.  Plus you can connect with other stitchers and find shops in an area that support your crafting needs.

Fiber Talk interviewed the company on their podcast so you can hear more about Stitch Sloth and how it works, what it costs, etc.

Stitch Sloth Launches

Ilene just announced Stitch Sloth has gone live!  It is an interesting way to connect with other stitchers and use their inventory software.  Read the fine print, though.

Fiber Talk just interviewed Ilene, the founder.

Elizabeth Bingham Wants Kneeler Photos

Elizabeth Bingham of the UK has created a website that will document and preserve Great Britain's 20th Century church kneelers for all.  The website is called Parish Kneelers.

Here is the section of the website explaining how anyone with photos of parish kneelers from the UK can help build the database.  I know that many US needlepointers have visited English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish churches and taken photos of the kneelers.  If you have photos you would like to donate and remember which church they came from, read the instructions on how to contribute here.  Note the churches they have already added to the database at the bottom of the page.  Images are not needed for those.

By the way, Parish Kneelers has lots of tips for those who want to stitch kneelers for their own church.  There are links to resources for supplies, books, help designing your own, tips for repairs, even places to apply for grants.

ThreadBook

Amy posted to NP Nation that she really likes ThreadBook for keeping track of her thread stash.

I found another review here--

It's available for $14.99 USD on both the Apple and Google Play app stores.  Check for compatibility with the devices you use and read the reviews carefully before you buy.

X-Stitch App for Organization

Several members of NP Nation use PerformTec Ltd.'s X-Stitch App to organize their thread inventory and track projects.  It's available for both Apple and Android platforms and costs roughly $3 USD.  Built for cross stitchers, this has good ratings and is useful for any stitcher managing their inventory of threads and charts and canvases.  The security-minded should note that your data is stored in the cloud, making it potentially hackable.  And like all apps, you don't own the software, you only bought it to use on your current device.  If the app owners don't update it regularly, you will not be able to use it on a newer device in the future or even if there is a substantial upgrade in the software on your current device.  Buying computer software is really just renting it for devices that are compatible.

Databases for Inventory

The latest article from Inspirations has a section on databases you can use to track the threads, charts, canvases and fabrics you own.  Follow the links for further information.
https://mailchi.mp/inspirationsmagazine/embroidery-news-issue-461403?e=cb5b277f1f

If you are experienced using Excel, you will find the spreadsheet available through Google Documents works in a similar manner.  It can be shared, in case that's something you and your stitchings friends are interested in.  You'll need a Google account, though.

Embroidery Stitch Identification Guide

Thanks to Hands Across the Sea Samplers I have a link to a stitch identification guide developed by the Henry Art Gallery to help them in their analysis of early embroidered pieces.
http://dig.henryart.org/embroidery-stitches/first_level_pages/default.html

I am not certain how useful this will be to needlepointers,  but it sure would be nice if it was expanded to include needlepoint stitches which have multiple names for the same stitch.  I think if we want a common database to help identify stitches to use a common name, we'll have to build it ourselves.

This link has been added to the "Stitch Diagrams and Resources" area waaaaaaay down at the bottom of Blog.

Free Excel Thread Spreadsheets

Susan Thompson has created a series of thread spreadsheets in Excel which Linda K. Reinmuller posted on her website, adding other spreadsheets of her own devising. If you have Excel on your computer, you can download these and use them to keep a list of what you have in your stash of threads.  Many thanks, ladies!

Keeping Track of Projects

Jan at Thread Medley outlines how she uses Bento to track her projects.  The database she uses is no longer available for Apple machines, but anyone who can create a spreadsheet or a tables document can copy her layout successfully.  I think the way she keeps her current projects above the projects just maturing in her stash is exceptionally clever, too.

If you like having things organized, Jan has great ideas.

Sue is ORGANIZED

Sue Dulle's latest blog posting is about how she organizes her threads.  At the first of the year we all seem to think about organizing the stash, and this is very inspirational.

X-Stitch App for Inventory Control

Linda K. Reinmuller just posted this to the ANG email list in response to a question about thread inventory apps.  I am reprinting it here with Linda's permission.  For those of you who don't know Linda, she's a wonderful counted canvaswork designer with a special interest in computer design and charting programs.  Her blog (link on her website) has a lovely list of available stitch charting programs at the bottom of the page, by the way.

Thanks, Linda!

**********************************************************

I just got X-Stitch App by PerformTech Ltd. It is $2.99.

[Jane:  Here's the links to the app on the iTunes store and the Google Play store.]
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/x-stitch-app/id906882968?mt=8

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.performtec.XStitch&hl=en

It has a lot of thread manufacturers listed, and from what I can tell also lists all the threads in that manufacturers colors, although I haven't checked every single one. The promo info claims it has 6000 thread selections that can be added.

It can also be used to add charts and linens to inventory. From looking at it, this can be adapted to canvas.

I have no affiliation with this other than being a techno-geek who tries to keep up with all the fabulous ways I can use technology to enhance my stitching.

Spreadsheets are straight forward, but it is always fun to have a new app to play with, and this one does appear to be very user friendly.

The BIG List of Online Textile Collections

Thanks to Mary Corbet, I have discovered "The BIG List of Online Textile Collections," which is simply a page of links to online museum collections of textiles which include handwork.   This list is maintained by Yvette Stanton or Vetty Creations, so if you know of an online resource that isn't listed, please let her know.
http://www.vettycreations.com.au/link.html

There's a lot of information here.  I plan to bookmark this and explore the sources looking for needlepoint as I have time.  I hope many of you will join me.

HanDBase Love

Folks who use the HanDBase database software to keep track of their threads are going to be thrilled to learn that Brenda has made her applets available for free. You have to own the software first, but then you can download her modifications so that you can track threads, beads, and projects. You can read more about the software and see how Brenda uses it herself via the links in this article.

Brenda, lovers of HanDBase now love you!

Needlepoint Events UPDATED

There's a new website in town--Needlepoint Events!  Vicky DeAngelis mentioned it on her blog tonight.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/so-whats-new-2/

The website is going to be a database of upcoming events and classes and will be searchable by location, shop, or teacher.  There is even a place for class reviews, trunk shows, and monthly clubs!
http://needlepoint.events

I don't know anything about the site except that it is based in Atlanta and is probably paid for via advertising. The site has been created by Mark Young of Labors of Love.  Thank you, Mark!

Hopefully Needlepoint Events will take off.  Let me tell you, I cannot wait to be able to stop updating the Classes and Events tab or the Monthly Clubs tab!  All this is a lot of work and blogs are not a suitable format for databases of classes and events.  The limitations of listing them on Blog is painfully obvious to me and probably obvious to you, too.  And then there's the issue of listing trunk shows, which I am opposed to as I believe that it simply trains stitchers to ship for the lowest price instead of supporting shops that are too small to afford deep discounts and frequent sales but which give stitchers endless help when they need it.

Stay tuned....

Charted Database

Fans of counted canvaswork rejoice!  Apparently Cyberstitchers has created a searchable database of cross stitch charts, which includes things like Rebecca Wood's Seasonal Banners turned into charts.   I am not certain what is here and what isn't, but if you have a favorite painted canvas designer, plug in their name and see if there's anything of theirs in the cross stitch magazines.
