What Is A Frame Weight? The Movie UPDATED

Memories in Stitches on Instagram has a short video about frame weights, showing what they look like and how they are used.

In case the video disappears, a frame weight is a bean bag filled with heavy items (pennies, shot, etc.) that you put on one corner of needlepoint on stretcher bars to weigh it down.

Why would you do this?  Maybe you are traveling and don't want to pack your needlepoint stand.  Maybe you don't work large projects often and you don't want to invest in an expensive needlepoint stand?  With a frame weight, you can put your stretcher bar project on a table with half sticking out over the edge.  The frame weight holds it secure as you stitch with both hands on the part of the project sticking out away from the table.

Traditionally frame weights were frog shaped like this counted project from Amy Wolfson.

Edie and Ginger created a lot of painted canvases of frogs meant to be made up as frame weights.

When Beanie Babies were a thing, some folks opened up the seam and filled their Beanie Baby with heavy shot and sewed it back up to make a customized frame weight much quicker than needlepointing one. Of course if you have stitched something and don't know what to turn it in to, maybe a frame weight would be a good use of your beautiful stitching.

UPDATE: This short video from The Wool and The Floss shows a frame weight in action.  There's a video from Waste Knot, too.  Now, don't you need one of these?!

The Quick Threading Needle

McClain Sewing has a tool to help you get your needle through thicker materials in just the right spot.  I'm not 100% sure how it works but it looks worth exploring if you have trouble getting your needle in just the right place.

Answers for Beginners

KC Needlepoint has a nice blog posting answering frequent questions they get from new needlepointers about the beginner kits they sell.

Their beginner kits are quite nice, not childish or too hard.  They come with everything you need, including scissors and one needle.  Needles are easy to lose, though, so I recommend you buy a packet of size 20 or 22 tapestry needles.  Tapestry needles have blunt tips.  Size 20 is a little larger than 22, but either size will work on 13 or 18 count unless you are using a very fat thread.

I have a ton of information for new needlepoints in the tabs just under the header of Blog.  Browse a bit and see what information rings a bell for you.  There are even videos and classes for those who like visual learning.  Take your time.  Wander from link to link and know that there is no rush to learn everything.

My best tip is to cultivate a relationship with a needlepoint shop.  They will be your best buddy when you have questions, need help, or just want to talk about your new love of making something with your own hands.

Magical Moose in Silk Ribbons

StitchLady Jan is working a Blue Dogwood Design canvas called "Magical Moose."

The design is on 18 count canvas and is meant to be stitched with two sizes of River Silks ribbons plus Kreinik ribbon.  It should be interesting to watch Jan as she works on it.  By the way, River Silks ribbons are my favorites.  It's a beautiful but durable silk ribbon available in 4mm, 7mm and 13 mm widths and a ton of colors, including overdyes.  I highly recommend it!

Ready to Take Your Needlepoint to the Next Level?

The National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) now offers needlework evaluations by their certified judges.  You have to take photos of your work, fill out a form, and email it all to NAN.  It costs $40 on a credit card paid through PayPal.  You will get a response that they've received your request within 7 days and the evaluation should arrive in 2-3 weeks.

If you don't have a shop or stitching friends to critique your work, this is a fabulous way to get feedback so you improve your stitching.

YIKES!

The news from Chaparral isn't great right now.  During a move to Tennessee, Heidi lost everything in a moving truck fire.  Combined with some health issues, she's having a hard time.

Here's hoping things start to look up soon, Heidi.  To quote Dolly Parton, "The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain."

Let's Talk Emma Homent

Ever heard of Emma Homent? Or The Makers Marks?

I'd sort of seen the name here and there, first when this British designer started her website, The Makers Marks.  It's full of simple and cheerful designs, the sort of thing you can pick up when you are starting to needlepoint and fool around with.

Then in 2022, Emma branched out by creating a column on Mr. X. Stitch called "Needle Points of View" and publishing her first book, Needlepoint:  A Modern Stitch Directory.

You can read two brief reviews of her first book here and here:

Emma didn't stop there.  Soon Needlepoint:  A Modern Stitch Directory in 50 Cards came out.  Now you can take a card or two with you as reference material.

Next Level Needlepoint Book continues Emma's diagrammed stitches with 100 more stitches.

Her latest venture is Needlepoint Journal, a way of organizing your projects.

I have to admit I've never seen any of Emma's books or the card pack, which may be because she's English and her works aren't as available in the US, or maybe it's because I already own hundreds of needlepoint books and don't need more to dust.  So I can't comment on any of the books.  It does look like she has both diagrams and stitched examples in color, which is something folks love in stitch dictionaries.

Emma's popular and prolific and the books aren't that expensive, so if you want to add to your library, see if your favorite shop carries any of the above.

How to Bezel a Chaton: The Movie

If the phrase "how to bezel a chaton" sounds Greek to you, not to worry--Ruth Schmuff has a little video that shows how to use beads to attach a flat backed smooth crystal to your canvas.

This is the short version.  You can find longer versions on YouTube, such as this--

Upcoming Event: Canvas Crawl 2025

June 18-June 22 is the 2025 Canvas Crawl.  This is a shop-focused event in the Northeastern US.  All the shops participating (the link below lists them) will have special guests, trunk shows, sales, and more.

It's a nice way to promote needlepoint and support the shops that support us, so gather up your current (or potential) stitching buddies and head out to visit the shops.

Plain or Fancy?

Ada of Eye Candy just posted two versions of one of her designs on her blog.

One is all done in plain tent stitches, the other uses a multitude of stitches.  Which is better?  Neither.  The best one is the one you like best that will also hold up for the use it is intended.  The embellished version of Ada's piece wouldn't last as a glasses case, for example, but would be fine framed.

So you choose the one that works for you and that's the Best One.

New Painted Canvases from Needlepoint Dads

Are you a fan of the counted canvaswork of Needlepoint Dads?

Do working from charts cause your eyes to cross and your brain to freeze up?  Or is it just me?  Regardless, some of Dan's designs are now available as painted canvases from Needlepoint Inc. in San Francisco.  I found four of them currently available:
"Dad's Old Ties"

"Once Round the Sun"

"Sahara"

and "Seregeti."

It's cause for celebration to have some of these lovely things more widely available.

Stockings from Kaitlyn Marie Designs

Brenda has started a stocking by a designer I'd never heard of--Kaitlyn Marie Designs.    The deep green and color colors are lovely.  This is called Emerald and Gold Stocking

It's finished already but it's a small stocking.  Lovely.

Brenda decided the stocking needed a little something more.  What she chose to do is perfect.

Now she's started on the second Kaitlyn Marie Designs stotcking.  This one is called Patches of Snow and is almost entirely beaded.

I found a third Kaitlyn Marie Designs stocking on eBay.  This one is called "Fancy That:  Pearls and Gold Mini Stocking."  I grabbed a photo so you could see it.

Bunny Love: The Summer 2025 Mystery

The Summer 2025 mystery class at Bedecked and Beadazzled is "Bunny Love" from Lane Tree and Lily.

There will be two class sessions, one the end of July and the other the second week of August.  As always, I'll update this article with Ruth's progress photos.  Here's the first.  The bunny's face is starting to come alive, he has padded ears--and he has a bird friend!

This was a quick stitch, and a very cute one.  Check out the background and his sweet cheeks.

Threadaholic Alert--Firefly Burmilana

Amy Bunger's been at Needle Works in Austin, Texas, taking a class from Tony Minieri.  She came home with a brand new thread--Firefly Burmilana!

Firefly Burmilana is Burmilana mixed with Super Twist metallic.  You can see the colors on Needle Works' website.  Looks like there are 13 colors available right now.  Think Silk Lame Braid but Burmilana instead of silk mixed with a thin metallic.

New Stitch Monday and the Susan Roberts Stockings

The new project for Ridgewood Needlepoint's New Stitch Monday is a Susan Roberts stocking called "Forest Friends" that Adrianne is stitching.  There's a good Santa coat stitch and great fur stitch diagrammed here.

Next she worked on the leaves in the background.

The final section on the stitch was the background snow.

Now Adrianne starts work on the second Susan Roberts stocking--"Snowman."  First up the snowman has a lovely sky.

There are two sets of trees to stitch next plus some ornaments.

Now the snowman's body and face are stitched and it has a hat and scarf.

Finally the snow is stitched and the second stocking complete.

The third Susan Roberts stocking Adrianne worked is "Lantern Walking," a classic Santa design with some nice clothing stitches.

I never would have thought to use Double Woven Variation for bushes but it works!

The snow stitch is interesting and turned out well.

Next is the sky.

Now the final touches.  Lots of French knots!

We've started on a fourth Susan Roberts stocking.  This posting is about the background sky and the moon.

The snow is done with a mixture of Stardust and Neon Rays Plus.  Stardust is a mix of silk and wool with a bit of polyester sparkle.  It's made by Brown Paper Packages.

This one has the reindeer, tree and garland all stitched.  It's really charming.

And now for the sky behind Mr. Reindeer.

This stocking has mountains down below at the toe of the stocking.  Here is the stitch for the first set of mountains.

And here is the stitch chosen for the second set of mountains.

The reindeer on this stocking is flying over snow and a lake, so we have stitches for both.

The last part on the reindeer stocking are the two big evergreens at the bottom.

The last section is Mr. Reindeer and his harness.  And the reindeer stocking is done!
