How To Wrap Your Mummy

Kreinik highly recommends their 1/8 inch ribbon in color #100 White for mummy wraps.  If your mummy is tiny, go to the thinner 1/16 inch ribbon in the same dead white.

The NJNA Newsletter for Almost Halloween 2025

The New Jersey Needle Artists' newsletter is back, full of ANG news plus more, including opening registration for the Woodlawn show.  Want to go on a needlework retreat in Italy?  Want to stitch some Christmas items?  Or just take a class on making beards and mustaches?  Read all about it here.

Rittenhouse confirms that Caron's Snow is being discontinued.  I believed it when Old World Needlepoint say so, but it's nice to have confirmation, just in case.

Huck Embroidery Needles for Bullions

Quail Run recommends (and sells) Huck embroidery needles for making bullions.  Quail Run points out these have rounded blunt tips and a curve at the end.  They feel this makes for easier manipulation of threads.

There are better pictures here.

Breaking News: Caron's Snow Being Discontinued

Just heard from the Old World Designs' latest shop newsletter that Caron is discontinuing Snow because the mill that makes it doesn't want to produce it any more.  I like Snow, so I'll be treating my remaining cards of it as special treats from now on.  We do have lots of other metallics, but Snow was a bit different in texture and easy to stitch with, so I'll miss it.

Shops should have stock of Snow for now, so if you have a project where you were going to use it, better buy a card or two now.

Padding on the Front But Not the Back

This YouTube video shows you how to pad an area on the front of your canvas without adding bulk to the back side.

It's a neat (and easy) technique from Bedecked and Beadazzled's resident stitching genius--Ruth Schmuff.

Finishing A Thousand Ways

Ok, maybe the links below don't have a thousand different ways to finish a needlepoint project, but EyeCandy shows off a lot of options for her geometric designs, from a box to what I think is a Kindle cover and more.

Ruth Schmuff shows off four framed versions of one of her mystery classes.  All four are framed but all are very different!

There are endless ways to finish your needle art, so pick something that expresses your personality and showcases your style.

A Guide to Threads from Serendipity

Serendipity Needleworks has posted a very nice guide to threads on their website.

Note that this is just a guide and most useful if you are using a tent stitch.  How many plies you use depends on the stitch and the effect you want more than anything else.

Visiting Threads Too Needlepoint

Melita's latest road trip included a visit to Threads Too Needlepoint in Fair Haven, New Jersey.

It sounds like a fun visit, although I wouldn't have been able to resist buying threads whether I had a project for them or not!  If you are curious, you can do a virtual road trip to Threads Too via their website. Don't miss the Sale section.  There are some good bargains there.

Which Side Are You On?

Basketweave for Lefties (and Others)

Saturnalia Stitching posted both a stitch diagram and a demonstration video of how she works basketweave from the lower left up towards the upper right.  This is how I've seen people teach left handed stitchers to do basketweave although sometimes I do this myself in an awkward space.  Basically, anyone can do this.  You don't have to be left-handed!

Use the side arrow to switch between the diagram and the video.

Fair Exhibit Winners

Late summer and early fall is the time for the county and state fairs, with all their exhibits, including needlework.  I've collected all the photos folks have posted of their exhibited pieces.  Congratulations to all and thanks for showing off how lovely your needlepoint can be.

Jenny's done some award winning Indiana-themed pieces for their state fair.

The judges couldn't find an errors in Mara's counted piece!

This looks rather plain in the photo, but trust me--Jane Zimmerman pieces are stunning in person!

Willie got a second place ribbon for her four seasonal cat designs.

Jeanne got two blue ribbons but only one was for needlepoint.

Susan got a blue ribbon for her Pippin collage.

Susan managed two blue ribbons at the Oregon state fair.

Linn brought home TWO ribbons!

This pink and white beauty got a blue ribbon.

Rachel got two ribbons (and shows off other stitchers' work) on her Instagram page.

Kelly's so proud of someone who got a blue ribbon for one of her designs!

Chronically Online Ndlpt won a blue ribbon for Mr. Frog.

Jennifer's mom won a blue ribbon AND a best of show at the Texas State Fair!

Finally, Brenda reminds us that no matter who won ribbons, each piece is gorgeous and introduces people to the art of needlepoint, so keep up that great stitching!

There's a New Thread in Town (Soie Tissée) UPDATED

Silk Road Fibers has a new thread--Soie Tissée (pronounced swah t-say)--is an intricately woven thread of seven lustrous strands of 100% silk according to Stitch-Stash.  You can see photos of many of the colors (shared with Straw Silk) on the Stitch-Stash website.

Judging from the photos, it looks like a flat braid.  I haven't gotten my hands on any yet.  There's more information on the Silk Road Fibers website.

By the way, Silk Road Fibers' website says Straw Silk will return in early 2026.

UPDATE:  Thistle Needleworks posted photos of the colors plus closeups of what it looks like stitched on their Facebook page.

Self Finishing Video for Colored Acrylic Clutches

KC Needlepoint has posted a video explaining how to finish your needlepoint and insert it in colored self finishing acrylic clutches.

The clutches will hold a canvas that is 6 1/8 inches by 3 7/8 inches.  KC Needlepoint sells the self-finishing tool.

I don't see the colored acrylic clutches or double-sided tape on their website,  but I did find something similar here--

You can find the double sided Scotch indoor tape from 3M many places.

ANG's Seminar in 2025

The 2025 American Needlepoint Guild Seminar was held in New Orleans from August 19-24, 2025. You can read about it on the ANG website.

Melita's doing pre-work for her Jennifer Reifenberg class, "Nights in White Satin."

Melita's arrived in New Orleans!

Melita went to her first class--Deborah Mitek's "Walk in the Woods"--and attended the opening banquet where she learned her original design called "Flowers Along a Rhode" won the Creative Inspiration Award.

Here is more about "Walk in the Woods" as Melita continues work on this Deborah Mitek class.

You can read Melita's Artist Statement for "Flowers Along a Rhode" here.  It also won a second place ribbon in the Original Design Professional category.

Melita's second day class with Deborah Mitek had her practicing ribbon leaves. Then she dodged a parade (this is New Orleans, folks, parades are constant) to get to Expo and shopping!  I should mention that New Orleans is even hotter in July than August.

Melita's second class was with Kay Stanis, working her "Nautilus."

I didn't know you could untwist Trebizond either!

While working Nautilis, Melita researched ways of taming the threads that were hard to work with.  Beeswax, anyone?

Melita also has several strategies she uses to get through stitching Nautilis.

Now Melita's in the Jennifer Riefenberg class, "Nights in White Satin."

Melita attended her last "Nights in White Satin" class and also the closing banquet.  Plus she recommends three authors of cozy mysteries set in needlework shops.

Melita won a wonderful Jim Wurth design at Seminar's Silent Auction.

Melita paid to have a written evaulation of "Flowers along a Rhode" which is the original piece she exhibited at Seminar.  It's very interesting to hear the judge's thoughts.

Here are the award winners from ANG's Seminar Exhibit:

Denise won both a blue ribbon and the Best in Show for this Zecca mask.

Marianne won the President's Choice Ribbon.

Cynthia Thomas won the Best Halloween piece award.  Go Cindy!

Vicky won the Wearable Art award with this lovely purse.

BJ won two ribbons (a blue and Judges Choice) for this Chinese horse.

Maureen got an Honorable Mention for Painted Canvas without Stitch Guide and...

...she won the Princess Grace Award for an all-tent stitched image.

Eileen's Honorable Mention is well deserved.

Bobbie got a second place!

Linda won a blue ribbon for her Painted Canvas with Stitch Guide Professional piece.

This colorful cat won a Judge's Choice Ribbon.

Caroline's Mini Lights (Sally London)

The Sun City Stitcher used an old chart from Sally London of Rainbow Gallery to stitch this string of Christmas lights piece.

Rainbow Gallery's website has free cross stitch and needlepoint charts from well known designers to download and use.  "Christmas Light Bulb Ornament" by Susan Portra is similar to what the Sun City Stitcher used.

They also used to distribute free charts to the shops.  Ask your favorite shop if they have these tucked away anywhere.

Help Picking A Background Color

Ever find yourself stumped for a background color?  Fortunately for all of us, Kaffe Fassett is a master of color.  All you have to do when you have no idea what color to use is to visit Kaffe's website and browse.

A red flower?  Try teal green or a strong blue for the background.

Pink florals?  How about a strong terracotta?

Stitching vegetables?  How about a soft dove gray to set off those green leaves?

When stumped, consult an expert.  Then pull out threads from your stash in similar colors and arrange the skeins around the outside of your piece.  A color or two will pop out from the rest and there you go!

Kaffe knows color.  He'll help you know color, too.
