Cohana Seam Rippers

Chandail carries something I've not seen before--seam rippers made by Cohana.  The glazed tile handles come in two colors, white and gray, each with a coordinating tassel.

Cohana is the Japanese company that makes wonderful scissors.  Here are their embroidery scissors.  I've been lusting after a pair.  These sometimes come in limited edition colors, too.  But shop around.  Prices vary.

Threadaholic Alert

If you are a threadaholic who hoards all sorts of unusual threads for that special project or if you just want to bookmark a source for threads that are a bit different, here's Chandail's page for thread oddities such as Au Ver au Soie metallic braid, DMC's memory thread sold by the yard, Prisms or Borealis, and silk floss complexion collections.

Abstract Floral, from Birth to Execution

Kimberly just answered the question of where her design ideas come from.

You can watch how "Abstract Floral" went from a sketch on a box her grandkids were playing with to a design she'll be teaching at Chandail in April.

Chandail Sells Ultrasuede

I just stumbled across the fact that Chandail Needlepoint sells Ultrasuede fabric in 8x10 pieces.

That is perfect for a small pillow or standup or maybe 2-3 ornaments' backing.  Best of all, you can call the shop and discuss colors and get intelligent help.  The online fabric stores don't seem to speak DMC these days, so you can't request a blue that is similar to DMC #3843!

Breaking News: Chandail is Moving

Chandail has announced they are moving to a new location. Work is underway on the new shop right now. The current location is still open, however. Check the Chandail website (right side) for the latest on the move, the new address and when it will happen.

New Classes from Tony and Brenda

I don't normally list classes here (it's a ton of work and very few people look at the tab I used to maintain) but these two classes at Chandail Needlework are special. So here goes! First up, Tony Minieri has a new counted piece that he's starting to teach. It's called "Mumtaz Mahal" and appears to be one of his designs inspired by ethnic fabrics.
http://www.chandailneedlework.com/classes-and-workshops.htm#mumtaz

Brenda Stofft is going to teach at Chandail, too.  I've never known her to teach a class before and this one is all about her dimensional stuffed rabbit. Amazing!
http://www.chandailneedlework.com/2016-workshops.htm/2014-workshops.htm#Stofft

If you are interested in the classes, check with the shop.  I don't know if they allow "ghosts."  Ghosts are people taking a class long distance instead of being in the shop for it.  Normally ghost students are mailed the class materials once the class ends so that any changes or clarifications that come up during the actual class can be added to the kit.

A New Mystery from Chandail (And Zecca)

Chandail and Zecca are collaborating on a new mystery class called "The Enchanted Garden Mystery Project."  The six lessons are by Kathy Kulesza and Cindy Howland.  You can see the entire canvas and a peek at Lesson One on Chandail's website.

Amanda Has a Song in Her Ornaments

This week Virginia highlighted a series of Christmas song ornaments from Amanda Lawford that I didn't know existed.  This isn't a totally unique idea--Tony Minieri did a charted series based on Christmas songs some years ago--but the designs are beautifully executed and Virginia stitched hers very nicely.
http://stitchstyleblog.com/2015/01/snowed-stitching-away/

Chandail used Tony's for a club.  I'm not sure if it is still available as they don't seem to be on Chandail's website any more.

Aren't designers clever to come up with these wonderful things?

Life's a Circus at Virginia's House UPDATED

Virginia is happily stitching away on the Kirk and Hamilton (now Kirk and Bradley) circus animals.  She's got some nice tips on stitching fur and adding bling to designs you might be interested in.
http://stitchstyleblog.com/2015/01/kirk-and-bradley-circus-animals/

The set was a club at Chandail a few years back with guides from Emily Pannier.  I'm not sure it is still available but you can always ask the shop.

You can see better photos of the entire [unstitched] set here.

UPDATE:  Virginia has posted more, this time of the ringmaster, plus information on where to find the set since it's been discontinued.  Thanks!

Frame Weight Alert

People who are looking for frame weight classes like the one Jim Wurth did several years back will be interested to hear that Chandail plans such a class with a bar that acts as a magnet as part of the kit.
http://hosted.verticalresponse.com/137940/0c4d6750d3/1464533477/4b156b9e3f/

The Chandail website mentions the class but without any details.. For that you need to contact the shop.

Chandail's New Website

In other great shop news, Chandail's redone their website. As you know the shop was recently sold and the new owner updated the website to reflect the changes she is introducing and the things she's keeping like they were.  Please note that with proof of ANG or EGA membership, the shop will give you ten percent off any purchase between the dates of October 10-November 30, 2012.
http://www.chandailneedlework.com/about-chandail-needlework.htm

One significant change is the new monthly clubs that are being introduced.  The clubs include Tony Miniei's Christmas Song ornament series and Melissa Shirley's angel ornaments.
http://siterepository.s3.amazonaws.com/956/e_newsletter_july_chandail_2012_0820_final.pdf

I think Tony's Christmas Carol set is a charted series, which is one of the rare monthly clubs for the counted canvas work people.  It also looks like there will be a Brenda Stofft series featuring her Halloween hats, but there isn't much information on the website, just a teaser photo.
http://www.chandailneedlework.com/products.htm

We'll have to stay tuned.

Chandail to Remain Open!

Very good news! Despite the relocation of Chandail's owner to Colorado this summer, the shop will stay open under a new owner. Ada Hayden of Eye Candy repeats the good news on her blog.

Shop Newsletter and Shop Closing/Changes

Needle Works in Austin has added their April newsletter to their website. You can see glimpses of new canvases (I'm going to be stitching one of those Leigh pieces), see their elephant monthly club, and read about the classes they plan and the threads they have on sale. Here's the link.
http://theneedleworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/201204newsletter.pdf

I've heard that Needlepoint Boutique in Plano, Texas is closing.  They are having a sale right now.  Their website hasn't been updated in a while but the address is still there if you happen to be in the area on a visit.
http://www.theneedleworkboutiquetx.com/

Sometime in the fall Chandail Needlework in Houston will also undergo changes.  The owner is moving to Colorado so she will either sell the shop or try to run it long distance in a smaller format.  Details here.
