Stitch by Stitch Stitcher of the Month for January 2024

Stitch by Stitch in Larchmont, NY has continued with their Stitcher of the Month profile, this time introducing Katie Oringel.  Katie's family and her Jewish faith are the inspiration for most of her work.

By the way, the two women traveling series that Katie enjoyed stitching so much are from Alice Peterson.

Free Dreidel and Menorah Charts

To celebrate Hanukkah, Ridgewood Needlepoint has posted charts for dreidel and menorah images to jazz up your stitching.  There are even Hebrew letters to add to the dreidels.

Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate.  Happy Tuesday to everyone else.

I've discovered that Susan Roberts sells self-finishing mezuzah kits which Gone Stitching stocks.

The kits come with painted canvas, stitch guide, ultrasuede for finishing and the plastic tube.  They are available in various colors.  If you also need the prayer, ask Gone Stitching.

A Custom Needlepoint Designer in Israel

Thanks to Needlepoint Nation, I learned about a designer of custom needlepoint, particularly Judiaca, in Israel. Her name is Lisa Sambol and her company is Loops Custom Designed Needlepoint.
http://loops.co.il

If you are planning a trip, you might want to contact her.  She works out of her home.  Of course, this being the 21st Century, she also has a Facebook page.  You can certainly order something wonderful online.

How to Finish a Yarmulke

Needle Paint has a fun article on their blog that explains how to finish a yarmulke.  I'm not Jewish but I bet this idea could be adapted for a little needlepoint cap for a teddy bear.  It's also just interesting to see how the round cap is created out of a flat needlepoint canvas.  I particularly like the idea of using bias tape around the edge to create a smooth finish that won't catch hair when worn.

A Profile of SM Stitches in Brooklyn

Jo I. Christensen discovered this profile of SM Stitches in Brooklyn in a local online news site. It's a family business with an emphasis on Judaic designs.

They don't appear to have a website but maybe you can make a visit if you are local.

Chagall's Twelve Tribes Needlepoint in Arizona

Thanks to Jo's mentioning this on Facebook, I learned that the McKewin family has made recreating Marc Chagall's Twelve Tribes of Israel stained glass windows in needlepoint a family project.  Their incredible story is explained here.

A Lifetime of Dedication to Needlepoint and God

Deborah Gray just posted photographs of Ilana Limoni's work on Facebook.  Deborah says Ms. Limoni is "a needlework artist like no one I've ever met. 150 scrolls of psalms, books of holy scripture. Works 10-17 hours every day for years. It's her passion. She needs an exhibit in a museum! She lives in oyster bay New York if anyone can visit! She's modest and solitary. At age 78 her family is concerned her tapestries will not be recognized."

Use the side arrows to see the photographs Deborah posted. She went on to add, "What you can't see is the embellishments all around the lettering. She adds beads and texture as well. It's beyond comprehension."
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153073559183212&set=pcb.883855645024928&type=1&theater

It's an amazing body of work.  I'm hoping Deborah is able to arrange more displays of the incredible stitching Ilana has done.

Finished Judaica

Renee just announced that Pepita Needlepoint has updated their gallery of finished Judaica. If you love finishing or are Jewish (or stitch for Jewish friends or family), please take a look at the wonders in the link below.  There's a wide variety of items to enjoy, although I'll admit the book covers are my favorites.  Click on any photograph to see an enlarged version.

Susan's Gift

SJ Designs' "18th Century Sampler"

There have been quite a few free counted canvaswork designs released in December so I'm just now getting around to sharing them all. This one is from Susan Johnson at SJ Designs, home of great beads and great counted designs. It is a pretty interlaced ribbon design that comes both in Christmas and Hannukah colors.
http://us2.campaign-archive2.com/?u=35aa40000a83a7d7f36608669&id=c1647c4a52&e=6e728c7232

Fans of counted work (or beads) should explore Susan's site. I order from her periodically and can vouch for her great customer service, which is only exceeded by the quality of the beads she sells.

No, I don't buy her charts (I can't count to three consistently) but her "18th Century Sampler" is going to test my resolve when it comes out this winter.

Thank you, Susan!

New Jersey Needle Fest with Finishing

New Jersey Needle Fest was the first weekend in November and it looks like great fun.  Karen at Nimble Needle went and had a blast!  But as she says, "Not interested in looking at a room of middle aged women? Here's some items that have recently come back from various finisher."  LOL
http://thenimbleneedle.blogspot.com/2014/11/new-jersey-needlefest-and-few-finished.html

The finished items that just showed up in her shop are wonderful, as is this amazing tefillin bag in a stained glass pattern with the Star of David and the recipient's name in Hebrew.

Keep up the great stitching, folks!  (And thanks for sharing.)
