New Passport Covers and Insert Canvases UPDATED

Planet Earth now offers self-finishing passport covers, something I've not seen before.

Stitch by Stitch shows a bunch of inserts and the colors of covers available.

UPDATE:  According to Stitch by Stitch Larchmont, the passport cover opening is approximately 2.75 x 4.25 inches.

UPDATE #2:  Planet Earth posted a video on how to insert a canvas into their passport covers, using nail clippers to shove the corners into position.

Portraits of Iris Apfel

This new portrait of Iris Apfel is from Kate Dickerson.  Miss Apfel just turned 100, by the way.

So Gayla Elliott of Alice Peterson has a portrait of Iris, too.

This Iris portrait from KCN isn't new but it's lovely.

Portraits of real people in needlepoint are very interesting as they showcase not only the salient features of a person, but they show each designer's style very well.

Interviewing Kate Dickerson

The latest interview the Pointing It Out podcast has done with Kate Dickerson. It's a fun one and reveals that Kate's a Francophile and a lover of Lily Pulitzer—and her idea for a new French Nativity set based on the santons ("little saints") of Provence.

Frida in Needlepoint UPDATED

Thorn Alexander's Frida Portrait

Bobbin and Fred is in love with needle art portraits of Frida Kahlo.  One of her favorites is available as a printed canvas from Art Needlepoint.
https://www.sewingwithbobbinandfred.co.uk/2018/08/frida-fever-five-fantastic-kahlos.html

The first Frida Kahlo portrait in painted canvas I know about is Melissa Shirley's from her Wild Women series.
https://rittenhouseneedlepoint.com/canvas/people/frida-kahlo-wild-woman.html

Melissa also has the Frida chick from Vicki Sawyer, which makes me smile every time I see it.  Bet this hen rules the roost!
https://www.annieandco.com/products/melissa-shirley-vs146

Lulu My Pink Turtle has several Frida portraits for those who are more whimsical.

Bailey Jack (distributed by And More) has a butterfly portrait of Frida.

Maren Devine has my favorite Frida portrait.  Kate Dickerson distributes her work.

I'm sure there are more Frida needlepoint canvases available.  If you know of one, please tell me in the Comments or email me at chillyhollow at hot maildotcom if Google won't let you comment today.

UDPATE:  Mary Ann found this limited edition Frida pictured above from Thorn Alexander.  It's not on their website so it may no longer be available.  So I posted the photo Mary Ann found for us.  Thanks, MA!

BREAKING NEWS: Patience Brewster Canvases

Kate Dickerson just posted to Facebook's Needlepoint Nation that she is going to discontinue distribution of Patience Brewster artwork as needlepoint canvases.  So if you want one of these beauties, she has all of them in stock right now but won't be getting any more.  Ask your favorite shop to order before she runs out.

A Shot of Color for a Dreary Day

I write Blog articles ahead of time, mostly about three-four weeks before they will publish.  Therefore I don't really know if today's going to be dreary but hey!--it's December!  Everyone needs a shot of color and fun finishing in December, right?  Therefore I'm reviving Finishing Friday as a special treat.  First, let's see what Ruth Schmuff's students have done with their mermaids from Lulu My Pink Turtle....
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2016/11/beaches-mermaids-and-seashells.html

The design is called La Sirena and it was a mystery class from Bedecked and Beaddazzled last summer.  You can pick up the class kit from Ruth any time you need a mermaid (and mer-cat) in your life.
http://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/product/la-sirena/

Our other shot of fabulousness is from Suzie Vallerie at Enriched Stitch.  This is a Kate Dickerson piece called "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."  This also was a class at Suzie's shop.  She just got it back from the framer.
http://astheneedleturns.com/girls-just-wanna-have-fun/

If you want to play with ribbons, the kit is also available.

Now, don't you feel better?

Hugs from Chilly Hollow!

Is Blue and White a New Trend in Needlepoint?

I just added these to the Destination Dallas 2016 tab--

Lycette Designs is partnering with Indigo Home Shop to bring some of their lovely work to needlepoint canvases.
http://stitchstyleblog.com/2016/10/indigo-home-shop-lycette-designs/

Blue Dogwood Designs has a few special sachets with matching canvases. The sachets are made from Japanese indigo-dyed fabrics.
https://www.facebook.com/BlueDogwoodDesigns/photos/a.200573464851.166776.200567374851/10155635572324852/?type=3&theater

I'm starting to think blue and white is a new trend in needlepoint....

Of course, Kate Dickerson and Ehman have had blue and white classic designs for years.

Wonderful Finishing

Nimble Needle in New Jersey has just posted photographs of their latest batch of finished items that have returned from the finishers they use.   There are all sorts of special touches--like switching the color of cording on ornaments to outline a snowman's face in white.  You can see how even a few beads add weight to a piece, admire the ruching on eggs, or the tilt of a dreidel maintained by something heavy inside.  Karen shows off the acrylic trays from Kreative Koncepts which allow a small piece of needlepoint to be slid inside.  The stitching is fabulous, too.
http://nimbleneedlenj.com/finished-ornaments-plus-more/

Standard sized acrylic trays are available from Kate Dickerson, Melissa Prince and Cooper Oaks plus your local shop may have a source that can make them to your specs.
http://www.thepicketfenceinc.com/lucite_needlepoint/default.aspx

If you need something really oddly shaped, talk to Kreative Acrylics.

Trend Spotting: Sheena's Elves

Sheena James of Sheena's Sweet Stitches noticed another trend that totally escaped me among the huge number of new canvases debuting at the TNNA Winter 2016 show in San Diego--elves!

Mary Engelbreit

Like everyone else, I was charmed by this elf and birds canvas from Mary Engelbreit.  This is distributed by Painted Pony, by the way.

Santa's Workshop Set, from Danji
A lot of shops noticed Danji's Santa's Workshop set, which naturally has elves!  Here are slightly larger photos of the boy and girl elf unstitched--

Danji Elves Up Close

Cute, aren''t they?  Alice Peterson also has elves.  Sheena found these although I don't see them on the Alice Peterson website yet.

Alice Peterson's Elves
The best part of the elves from Alice Peterson and Dani is that they appear to be rather small.  They will make a quick, fun stitch!

Patience Brewster/Kate Dickerson "Vixen's Painter Elf"

Kate Dickerson's elves are larger and more elaborate.  Don't you just love his paintbrush and oversized hat!  The elf above is from Patience Brewster's art, licensed by Kate for needlepoint canvas.  You can see more of Patience's whimsical pieces, some of whom are elves, at the Kate Dickerson website.

The Elf from Labors of Love

After Sheena alerted me to the new elf invasion, I found another myself.  This little chubby guy is from Labors of Love.  Love his peppermint stick striped background!

Letters from Kate

Virginia shows off her newest finishing--letter ornaments from Kate Dickerson.  These can be finished many ways, some of which Virginia shows off in photographs.
http://stitchstyleblog.com/2015/04/kate-dickerson-letters/

The Kate letters are a great personalized gift and if you go the self finishing route, you can work from stash and have a lovely and rather inexpensive present for someone special.

A Whale of an Idea

This week Ridgewood is showing off the whale designs from Kate Dickenson. One of their customers stitched a Kate whale for her daughter and had custom fabric made with the daughter's name on the back. What a great idea! I had no idea you could get personalized fabric.

Here are even more of the Kate Dickenson whale patterns.
