A Dale Lenci Original at Auction

Now that Dale's retired from his shop owner and DJ Designs needlepoint canvas roles, he's branching out to design and stitch originals.   These will be dreamed up and stitched by Dale , then he'll auction them off once they are complete.  His first project is a designer handbag which you can see here.  But remember, the auction ends on December 16 so if you are interested, you have to move fast.

Ten percent of the auction proceeds will go to a charity that helps support kids emerging from foster care.  Kudos to Dale for being such a good designer--and good guy.

Betty White's Needlepoint at Auction UPDATED

From Celebrity Needlepoint by Joan Scoby and Lee Parr McGrath

Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills will auction items from Betty White's estate September 23-25, 2022.

The two needlepoint items offered are "...an orange needlepoint director's chair decorated with owls and reading "Allen" on the seat back made by White for her husband [Allan Ludden]" and "a large and beautiful decorative needlepoint wall hanging of exotic birds and butterflies which includes a photograph of White sitting while working on this needlepoint."

I think needlepoint pillows will likely also be available but can't confirm that until the auction goes live on Julien's website.  I've found several articles about Ms. White needlepointing various items.

Doris Day's Needlepoint at Auction

Thanks to Tim, I've learned that the upcoming auction of Doris Day's estate at Julien's Auctions has plenty of needlepoint items for sale.  The auction will be held April 4 and 5, 2020.  All proceeds will go to the Doris Day Animal Foundation.

Tim says the lots with stitched items are:

471 - embroidery on linen
494 - three needlepoint dog pillows

Second Session Lots

1005 - dog tapestry with beaded fringe and needlepoint coin purse
1021 - embroidered bell pull and flat unframed embroidery
1022 - dog tapestry pillows 

1023 - dog saying needlepoint pillow
1057 - traditional floral needlepoint footstool

There appear to be a lot of dog and cat pillows that are not needlepoint per se but it can be difficult to tell.

Mario Bautta Auction UPDATED

Horse Country Chic has alerted us to the auction of Mario Buatta's estate next week, which will include his needlepoint pillows.

President Reagan's Needlepoint Pillows UPDATED

UPDATE:  I changed the link which was the wrong one and substituted a video of the interior of the President's home in Bel Air.  There are many needlepoint pillows to be glimpsed although the ones you get a good look at are all tent stitched mementos stitched by their friends.  They are very personal and obviously stitched with love and friendship.

Lauren Bacall's Needlepoint Pillows and Antiques

Thanks to Judy B's mention on Facebook, I learned that Lauren Bacall's things were auctioned off by Bonham's in London March 31st. You can glimpse a needlepoint pillow and rug here.

There are pillows, too.  They sold for $1500 USD as one lot.  I don't think these were things she stitched else I think that would be noted as provenance.  The rest of the auction is for art, furnishings, knickknacks, a few dresses and simple jewelry.  All classics, but not needlepoint.

Sampler Alert: The Betty Ring Sampler Sale and Catalogue

I'm not a sampler fiend. Actually, it took me years to realize that those who like to stitch repo samplers are actually using them as a sort of time machine to visit our stitching ancestors and explore their world. If you are a sampler lover, you'll want to read about the sale of Betty Ring's collection and the catalogue that Sotheby's is going to print to go along with the sale. Mrs. Ring's collection is very important and has samplers that aren't in her books so anyone who enjoys her books will want to pick up a copy of the catalogue if possible.  Pre-ordering sounds like a very good idea to me.  It didn't take Betty's books long to become very very expensive.  The catalogues will likely go the same route so act now.
