At the ANG Seminar in Houston 2019

ANG's annual seminar is in Houston, Texas this year. Lots of folks are going.  I have a ton of links to information and reports from Seminar-goers, so pour your favorite beverage and browse!

ANG has posted a list of exhibit winners here.

Melita is there with friends, so they make a shop run, then she registered for Seminar.  She's taking a Kay Stanis silk and metal embroidery class.

She also did a one day class with Cynthia Thomas on manipulating threads and stitches and had a lot of fun designing stitches.

Plus Melita won a ribbon exhibiting this lovely piece which is her original design. Congratulations!

DMBstitch also took Cynthia's class.

ANG 2014 Color Class (Orna Willis)

Some lucky folks who attend the ANG Seminar in 2014 will be playing with color in Orna Willis' class. Isn't this design gorgeous? Apparently each stitcher will make it their own through the choice of advertising photographs. Amazing!
http://ornadesign.blogspot.com/2013/06/new-design-for-ang-2014.html

Orna is a master of color.  I hope this is available in chart form after Seminar is over.

Same Old, Same Old

The ANG Seminar is once again scheduled during Yom Kippur.  This is a constant problem ANG has since they have to choose from a limited selection of hotel openings that are during less desirable dates.  This year they are making special arrangements with local synagogues but I'd love to see them move Seminar to another season so everyone can go.
http://thenimbleneedle.blogspot.com/2013/01/ang-seminar-2015.html?showComment=1357825884957#c3468582949679985976

The real problem is -- when would that be?  Remember, they can't afford hotels during the High Seasons.

Christmas Cheer

These lovely Christmas stockings are cheerful and happy, perfect for enjoying during the stress of preparation for the perfect holiday.

Stephanie's little stockings are so cheerful!
http://stephsstitching.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-stockings-were-hung-by-chimney-with.html

The Colorado Stitcher has finished her Seminar project, a Southwestern boot design by Jeanette Rees that would make great stocking but she's having it framed to enjoy all year long.

Nimble Needle shows off customers' finished pieces.  They are wonderful!

The Needlepointer also is showcasing finished stockings and cuffs.

Also wonderful is this purse canvas, finished in an unexpected way.  It is lovely.

Do you like rugs?  Even if you don't, you'll love this one!  Speaking of Ridgewood, the second link is to a darling Christmas Santa ornament in bright, happy colors.

Elsa Williams Channelled by Marnie Ritter UPDATED

Ruth was lucky enough to take a class from Marnie Ritter at the EGA Seminar in Santa Fe, and shares some of her project and Marnie's ideas with us on her blog.
http://ruthsneedlework.blogspot.com/2012/11/been-to-santa-fe.html

I urge you to study the photographs carefully. Ruth has given us glimpses into Marnie's clever design ideas and how her mentor Elsa Williams approached embroidery.  I consider Marnie Ritter the most original needlepointer we have.  No one does original patterns the way Marnie does.  I treasure all my needlepoint magazines with her designs charted in them.  One day I'll stitch her original Aurora Borealis plate....
http://www.mritter.com/products.html

Thanks, Ruth.  This was very interesting and thought-provoking!

UPDATE:  Marie-Therese Baker just emailed me that Marnie's class "To Honor Elsa" is going to be repeated at Callaway in 2013.   You can see all the class listings and read about Marnie's class at the Calloway Gardens' School of Needle Arts page here.

Out of Africa

Bedecked and Beadazzled just had a pilot class with Gale Washington, featuring Gale's zebra design.  This will be taught for the Embroider's Guild of America at their 2013 Seminar.  It's an amazing piece with its use of Florentine pattern for the ground and the 3D touches on the zebra.  This is a piece I'd like to see and study in person but Ruth kindly provided photographs for those of us who can't take the class.  Thanks!

Let's Go Somewhere

Fall is always the retreat season, isn't it?  Lots of folks have been going places with their stitching to do more stitching in a classroom setting when they arrive.  Tisha went on a Margaret Bendig retreat.
http://stitchplaywithneedlepointtooltime.blogspot.com/2012/11/needlepoint-retreat.html

Margaret is famous for her kimono patterns.
http://www.sang-ega.org/margaret%20bendig%20workshop.html

But that isn't everything Margaret designs.  How about this charming patriotic heart?
http://stitchlady.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/stars-abound/

Or this Southwestern sampler from Needlepoint Now magazine?  It might take some hunting to find Margaret's designs as many as class projects only but you won't be sorry you spent time looking.
http://lets-stitch-away.blogspot.com/2008/01/southwest-sampler-by-margaret-bending.html

Teachers travel to these retreats as well.  Hazel Blomkamp went from her native South Africa to Russia.  You will find her report a fascinating window into a place that is home to a great many stitchers.  (Did you know the second largest number of visitors to the Loretta Spears blog I maintain log in from Russia and the Ukraine?  There are a LOT of counted thread canvasworkers there.)
http://therebelliousneedlewoman.blogspot.com/2012/11/hazel-and-di-inrussia-and-ukraine.html

Barbara Elmore just got back from the Santa Fe Enchantment EGA Seminar.   She taught two classes.  In one they stitched a white cactus plant, in the other a white moth.  Boring?  Now quite.  Barbara has you paint the canvas after stitching it, stencil it, use markers on it, add beads and sequins and metallics and ribbons and lots more to it.  You'll love the photographs of the white moths' rebirth into something totally unique to each stitcher.  My only quibble is that Barbara forgot to take photographs of the cactus canvases blooming!
http://stitchpography.blogspot.com/2012/11/santa-fe-enchantment.html

If you are like me and go three places:  the post office, bank and grocery store, these reports are priceless.  Many thanks to everyone for sharing the flavor of their retreats with us.

Summer isn't finished stitching her Royal Santa (Amanda Lawford) but she has finished some important sections.  Lovely!

Linda isn't finished with her And More sayings piece, either, but she's chosen a very clever way of embellishing it that I had to share.
