10 Versus 12

Ehrman, the famous British tapestry kit company, has posted a video showing the difference between their 10 count and 12 count designs.  In Britain these are called "mesh" instead of count but you get the idea.  Even if you aren't interested in the difference, it's fun to see two of their designs and see how their kits are packaged with tapestry wool.

How to Organize Your Threads

Ehrman has just posted a great video on how to organize your threads before you start to stitch one of their kits.  It's full of useful tips for those canvases that have printed color blocks on the edge of one side.

If you have a little free time, you can explore Ehrman's YouTube channel. It has some great profiles of their designers!

Ehrman now offers cross stitch kits!  All appear to be based on Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The kits come with Aida fabric and Madeiria six stranded cotton plus a needle.

The Jubilee Pillow

Ehrman's latest newsletter showed off the Jubilee Celebration pillow kit that Candace Bahouth created to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's fifty years ruling the United Kingdom.

It's not a brand new design but it's a lovely one and I thought today you might enjoy seeing it.

Vegetable Pillows from Kaffe Fassett

Kaffe Fassett's vegetable designs have been very popular but they've been discontinued for a while.  If you are a fan, there's good news--Ehrman has brought them back!  And they are on SALE!

Ehrman is an English company that produces kits with printed designs that are meant to be stitched with wool.  I don't think these older designs come with a chart and I also think they use tapestry wool and are on 10 count printed canvas.  If you are a fan, this is a good time to add to your collection of veggies by one of the greatest needlepoint designers of all time.

If you aren't familiar with the kits of his work Ehrman sells, you can click on "View All" at the very bottom of the page and see what Ehrman has available now from his designs.

Ehrman Has a New Website

Ehrman Tapestry in England has updated their website.  They always have spectacular designs for their kits (printed canvas shipped with the wool needed to complete) which are usually on 10 or 12 count canvas.
https://www.ehrmantapestry.com

If you have a favorite Ehrman designer, you can see just their work, or you can browse their collections to look at florals, birds, seaside, Asian, etc. themes.  The website is set up to filter canvases by overall size, too, just in case you only want pillows or rugs, etc.

Favorites from Destination Dallas 2019

Speaking of BUY IT NOW, I've had lots of fun looking at the latest new designs that were revealed at Destination Dallas last week.  As usual, I have favorites and I've been looking at trends.

"Beach Happy" from Melissa Prince

It seems lamas and dogs are very popular now.  I've seen lots of new dog canvases.  The above is my favorite from Melissa Prince, but she has several others available, including a hilarious mystery lovers dachshund that I call "Baskerville."
https://stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=59266&title=Mystery%20Lover%20Dachshund&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Ehrman has lots of fun new dog kits from Magie Hollingworth (second link below shows just one of many)...
https://www.melissaprincedesigns.com/dogs.html

http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Magic__MAGYT.aspx#.XX-seS2ZN3k

…and Pippin has a wonderful black lab.
https://www.theneedlepointer.com/product/black-lab-6/

"Peruvian Reindeer Sweater" from Tapestry Fair
This Tapestry Fair llama is a charmer.  There are two others in the series.
http://www.tapestryfair.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=67&Itemid=1

Designer Unknown
Birds and Halloween continue to be big themes.  This wonderful crow piece with tropical drinks (designer unknown) made me smile.
http://www.laborsofloveneedlepoint.shop/shop/c/p/Crow-Bar-x42937396.htm

Owl with Birds, Mary Lake-Thompson of Melissa Shirley Designs

I like this birds canvas a lot, don't you?  This is from Mary Lake-Thompson, distributed by Melissa Shirley.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/gallery/?bsn=1&fbclid=IwAR1WOhH6nSFrq2p5TDIc4HpSQKNMJa1LZaVFOM5pQWzfFqb3ZnolW_b_wZs

The Owl from Sandra Gilmore

I love this owl.  It appears to be from Sandra Gilmore of Once in a Blue Moon Designs/Fleur de Paris.  Lots of personality in this bird!
https://www.facebook.com/nestndlpt/photos/pcb.2667027780008491/2667026920008577/?type=3&theater

3K's White Fox Ornament

I also love 3K Design's fox canvas.  There is so much you can do in this small space!
https://needlepoint.com/collections/destination-dallas-2019/products/3k-designs-white-fox-ornament

Amanda Lawford/Vallerie Needlepoint Gallery

Dragons of course are classics.  This Chinese New Year Dragon is from Amanda Lawford of Vallerie Needlepoint Gallery.

Love You More
Personally I love stitching people and I really like this Love You More angel.  She's perfect.

Colors of Praise

This small Colors of Praise portrait reminds me of a dear friend.
https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/destination-dallas-2019/products/in236

Face Cards, DJ Designs

This stylized playing card is fun!  I know a lot of folks are intimidated by stitching people but these from the playing cards series would be an easy stitch.  There are quite a few in the set.  Designer is DJ Designs, courtesy of my spies!
https://www.facebook.com/189965167681135/photos/pcb.3254438184567136/3254437461233875/?type=3&theater

Mary Lake-Thompson's "Halloween Pumpkin Hat"

I also really like this Mary Lake-Thompson piece of a witch with her red-winged blackbird and decorated hat.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/galsearch/index.cgi?index=1568489441_51601&col=

Gayla Elliott/The Collection Designs

The new portraits by Gayla Elliott (The Collection Designs) are wonderful.  I think these are all six inches square so they wouldn't be too big to work on.  It's hard to choose one!

Asian Woman, Colors of Praise

But I think this is my very favorite canvas of all I've seen.  It s from Colors of Praise.
https://www.facebook.com/needlehearts18900/photos/pcb.1174336346086547/1174337249419790/?type=3&theater

If you can identify the designer of the folks I can't, please let me know.  Leave a comment below or email me at chillyhollow at hot mail dot com.  Thanks!

UPDATE:  Many thanks to Carolyn Hedge Baird for helping me credit designers.

For the Book Lover

Many needleworkers are avid readers as well. I am not sure why this is, but something about engaging the mind with prose while the hand is engaged with threads seems to entrance many of us. So today's posting, although not at all needlepoint, is for the readers.  Here is Janet Haigh's embroidered book cover….

Tea Time

A friend and I were talking about tea cozies which are used a lot in the United Kingdom but are much rarer here in the USA. But there are some wonderful needlepoint designs meant for tea cozies. Here are the ones we found—

Janet Granger has some really darling miniature tea cozies meant to be stitched on silk gauze.
https://www.janetgranger.co.uk/product-category/teacosy-kits/

She's in the UK but you can buy from her Etsy store.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/179388816/miniatures-kit-dollhouse-miniatures?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=needlepoint+tea+cozy&ref=sr_gallery-1-27

If you are more into stitching painted canvases, how about these two from Ziva?
http://www.ziva-needlepoint-designs.com/shopping-for-tea-cosies.html

Or these from Needlepoint Inc.?  They are more expensive because they are double-sided with gussets.
https://needlepointinc.com/collections/tea-pot-cozies

Kirk and Bradley has several abstract designs that might appeal.
https://needlepoint.com/pages/search-results-page?q=tea+cozy

Ehrman has a classic rose tea cozy that is beautiful.  Since it is printed on 12 count canvas, it'll stitch up fast.
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Rose-Teacosy__ROSETC.aspx#.XNGd7S-ZN3l

Let's drink (tea or coffee, your choice) to these!

Unicorns in Needlepoint UPDATED

Apparently April 9 was Unicorn Day (how did I miss THAT?!) so Accoutrement Designs has posted their unicorn themed magnets and fobs. Unicorn canvas by Oasis.
https://fobfriends.blogspot.com/2019/04/happy-unicorn-day.html

Black Rose Needlepoint has a new design—"Sophie's Unicorn." This normally comes on 13 mesh but it can be done on 18 count or 10 count for a child to stitch.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/642343941/sophies-unicorn-7-round-on-13-mesh?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=sophie%26%2339%3Bs+unicorn&ref=sr_gallery-1-2&organic_search_click=1&frs=1&fbclid=IwAR2zzMh1xHx7ax9rRjRjs_Revo591XoQUnzl0LTq9lvj7F8fMCn81a6GpXY

Needlepoint.com has a folk art version of a unicorn ornament as an online class.
https://needlepoint.com/products/folk-forest-unicorn-needlepoint-kit

Nenah Stone has a lovely one that's not too large at seven inches square.
https://needlepoint.com/collections/com-featured-categories-nenah-stone-designs-trunk-show/products/nenah-stone-designs-unicorn

A. Bradley has a darling small unicorn mini sock.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10218722251069151&set=pcb.2238783592865453&type=3&theater

My Pink Sugar Life has a sweet one.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/530114315/hand-painted-unicorn-needlepoint-canvas?ref=shop_home_active_18&fbclid=IwAR1d7l5V23a6jMi66JQEAxHW_TaBzpXSvQOc-B9-1wPp3HGBQ8p6YhQs7cM

Actually, their shop has the most unicorn small pieces I've found.  You can find a Kathy Schenkel tooth fairy unicorn or mini sock with a castle in the background, Rachel Donley's round unicorn ornament with space for a monogram (or perhaps a tiny photo?), and several versions of Princess and Me's little uni ornament, plus Burnett and Bradley's silvery Harry Potter-worthy unicorn rearing.  Plus you can get their folk art unicorn as a plain canvas.
https://needlepoint.com/pages/search-results-page?q=unicorn

Here's the Princess and Me uni made up into a pillow.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10216345068997524&set=p.10216345068997524&type=3&theater

And as an ornament.
https://stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=86435

Susan Roberts offers the Tapestry Tent unicorn Christmas stocking.
https://needlepointus.com/proddetail.asp?prod=AXS331CK

Oasis Needlepoint has a unicorn portrait that appears to be rather large.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10216104884928181&set=p.10216104884928181&type=3&theater

LizArt has a small charted one, suitable for a beginner.
http://www.lizartneedlepoint.com/Counted_Needlepoint.php

So does Burnett and Bradley (formerly A Collection of Designs).
https://burnettandbradley.com/products/always-be-a-unicorn?fbclid=IwAR1kcAoMBphfgnlg0opGqyghinK7WNje7rfQ09x7__jfKVpUNfF37MJIJjc

The famous unicorn from the Cluny Tapestries is still available for those who love Medieval designs.
Search around though.  You can get it cheaper than this.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Bucilla-Needlepoint-Kit-Unicorn-sealed-Barbara-Baatz-1998/163603748954?epid=1323004948&hash=item26178b185a:g:UCIAAOSwSP9bbhgV

Or just buy and download the chart.
https://www.koolerdesign.com/shopproductdetail?ProductID=2224

Alice Peterson has a version as well.

However, my favorite is the Ehrman kit from Candace Bahouth.

UPDATE:  Rebecca Wood has two new unicorn ornaments and a unicorn with rider piece.  The She Unicorn has a pink and green mane while the He Unicorn ornament has a purple and green mane.

Labors of Love has a brand new smallest unicorn with flowers.

A Sneak Peak At Genius

Check out this work-in-progress piece by Kaffe Fassett.  I think these are circus tents.  Note that he doesn't use a frame, works all in tapestry wool,  and uses the scoop method to stitch instead of going up and down.
https://www.facebook.com/ehrmantapestry/photos/a.1482740371985400.1073741838.1455089021417202/2050095271916571/?type=3&theater

Design genius he definitely is but having seen some of his work in person, it's not technically perfect. But the colors he uses and the patterns he creates are amazing.

There's a lesson for us regular stitchers here somewhere.

Background Idea

I just spotted a very clever background idea on Candace Bahouth's new "Avebury" design for Ehrman Tapestry.  Click on the "click here to view larger image" link for a good look.  It's two colors in stripes of varying widths and irregular edges in two muted colors.
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Avebury__AVE.aspx#.We8gcRSldjd

I think this would look fabulous for those pretty florals with the bland, one color backgrounds, sort of like this Point of It All Designs piece.

Many thanks to Candace for her clever design work!

Finding 10-12 Count Canvas

Margaret asked about finding 10-12 count canvas (both painted and plain) on Facebook's Needlepoint Nation. The answers were very useful so I am quoting them here for those who want a larger count, especially now that 13 and 18 count canvases are the norm.

Elizabeth Bradley kits come on 10 count canvas, as do the Ehrman Tapestry designs.
http://www.elizabethbradley.com/theamericas/

Occasionally some of the Ehrman canvases are 8 or 12 count.  Check before you buy.  Elizabeth Bradley and Erhman designs are kits, with tapestry wool included.
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com

Old World Designs has a series of 10 count canvases that come with coordinating tote bags.
https://www.oldworlddesigns.com/shop/c/p/OWD-Hydrangea-Tote-Bag-x26531509.htm

Jean Smith has some lovely florals on 10 count...
http://www.jeansmithdesigns.com

… and Cat's Cradle also has some nice 10 counts.  Your favorite shop can order from Jean Smith or Cat's Cradle for you.
http://www.catscradleneedlepoint.com

Needlepoint.com also carries 10 point canvases.
https://needlepoint.com

Designers' Desk and other shops carry 10 and 12 count plain canvas so you can work all sorts of designs from books and charts on them.
http://designersdeskusa.com

Have fun looking!

Is Blue and White a New Trend in Needlepoint?

I just added these to the Destination Dallas 2016 tab--

Lycette Designs is partnering with Indigo Home Shop to bring some of their lovely work to needlepoint canvases.
http://stitchstyleblog.com/2016/10/indigo-home-shop-lycette-designs/

Blue Dogwood Designs has a few special sachets with matching canvases. The sachets are made from Japanese indigo-dyed fabrics.
https://www.facebook.com/BlueDogwoodDesigns/photos/a.200573464851.166776.200567374851/10155635572324852/?type=3&theater

I'm starting to think blue and white is a new trend in needlepoint....

Of course, Kate Dickerson and Ehman have had blue and white classic designs for years.

It's that interesting.  He is a master of color and pattern, which you can see here...

...or in his needlepoint kits on the Ehrman website.

Shakespeare and Kaffe Fasset

Kaffe Fasset takes his inspiration for tapestry designs from many sources, but he's often worked with the theatre.  This morning I got an e-newsletter from Ehrman Tapestry (the source for Kay's needlepoint) announcing his partnership with The Royal Shakespeare Company.

He has created a needlepoint design called "Pressed Flowers" based on various flowers Shakespeare mentions in his plays.  Ehrman sells the kit.
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Pressed-Flowers__PFLO.aspx#.VTOMraZH1jc

The Royal Shakespeare Company sells other goods based on the what they call his "Shakespeare's Flowers Range" on their website.
http://www.rsc.org.uk/shop/category/197df978-76c5-4c92-a486-a9a59f33dc5f/http://www.rsc.org.uk/shop/category/197df978-76c5-4c92-a486-a9a59f33dc5f/

This isn't the first time Mr. Fassett has worked with the RSC.  In 1999 he designed large floral cushions for their production of "As You Like It."  Ehrman sells smaller versions of these patterns on their website.  This is the only photograph I could find showing his designs (both sweaters and needlepoint cushions) online.
http://www.rsc.org.uk/images/content/Photo_Galleries-2009_earlier/as-you-like-it-2000-phoebe-silvius-361x541.jpg

Here are the small versions of cushions from the 1999 RSC "As You Like It."  First, Crimson Blush--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Crimson-Blush__CBLU.aspx#.VTONvqZH1jc

Double Yellow--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Double-Yellow__DY.aspx#.VTONiqZH1jc

Paradise Pink--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Paradise-Pink__PINK.aspx#.VTONcKZH1jc

and Rosa Rubicunda--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Rosa-Rubicunda__ROSA.aspx#.VTONsKZH1jc

Remember, English tapestry kits are much different than the hand painted needlepoint designs we are familiar with in the U.S.  They are printed patterns on larger count (usually 10-12 count) and meant to be stitched with the tapestry wool that comes with the kits in continental or half cross stitch.

Ehrman has updated her profile (first link below) and done a video interview (second link below) as part of their artist profile series.  It's great fun to meet Magie and hear her approach to needlepoint design, so get yourself a cuppa and settle down to visit with one of Ehrman's artists.
