My Favorites from Spring 2020

With the disruption the Coronavirus has brought us during the spring of 2020, we didn't have a spring trade show in Orlando but that doesn't mean our designers haven't been busy creating temptations for us!  Here are my favorites from the late winter-early spring.

Gayla Elliott's Cleopatra

I always like Gayla Elliott's little portraits of woman.  This is Cleopatra.  She would be a delight to stitch!
https://needlepoint.com/products/aasgep255

Maggie's Cleo Cat, Complete with Attitude

Continuing the theme of Egypt (A personal favorite but hey!  This is MY favorites list!) is this fun Egyptian cat from Maggie.  Abstract designs don't usually grab me but I really like this one.  Snooty cats are always fun, right?

Heidi Stanley's Lucky Cat

Heidi Stanley has a great Lucky Cat design that would be really fun to do as well.

Green Tiger from Hello Tess

I also like Hello Tess' Green Tiger.  Are you seeing a feline theme here?  LOL
https://hellotessdesigns.com/collections/new

Labors of Love's Wicked Queen

Want more of a challenge?  Look at this Labors of Love canvas of the evil stepmother queen from Snow White that Amy Bunger will use as a Home Study starting probably next fall.  It'll be a real challenge but Amy Bunger is up to it.

Tapestry Fair's Spirit Animal Coyote

Tapestry Fair has a series of Spirit Animals from Timothy Chapman's artwork that are spectacular.  I like the Coyote.
https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/spring-2020-digital-market/products/spirit-animal-coyote

Blue Heron from Julie Mar is lovely.
http://www.juliemardesigns.com/pc/CN-1524/market-preview/Blue+Heron

Abigail Cecile's Brown Bear from the Folk Art Animals Series

If you want less of a challenge, how about the really darling series of folk art wild animals from Abigail Cecile?  Brown Bear is my favorite but they are all very cute and would be fun to work up for winter display.
https://kirkandbradley.com/collections/new-designs-abigail-cecile

Ugly Christmas Sweater from Ryan Conners of Purple Palm

Want something with personality?  How about Ryan's animal glasses series?  These are distributed by Purple Palm.  I love the cat in green glasses myself but there are dogs that are just as cute.
https://purplepalmdesigns.com/?product_cat=ryans-designs

Melissa Prince's Winter Hummingbird

If you like birds (and who doesn't?) you might like Melissa Prince's new birds, too.  My favorite is the Winter Hummingbird.  I like the realism here.  The humming bird has personality.
https://stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=64696&title=Winter%20Hummingbird&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Lady in Hat from Leigh Designs

My final pick is a classic.  Leigh Designs has a series of ladies in hats.  This is the newest and a favorite of mine due to the soft pastel colors and her sawn neck and lovely hair.
https://www.facebook.com/FleurDeParis/photos/a.364859333567690/2895536467166618/?type=3&theater

So there you have it!  I like people and animal canvases, mostly realistic designs.  So what's your favorite theme and which new designs do you like?

Favorites from Destination Dallas 2019

Speaking of BUY IT NOW, I've had lots of fun looking at the latest new designs that were revealed at Destination Dallas last week.  As usual, I have favorites and I've been looking at trends.

"Beach Happy" from Melissa Prince

It seems lamas and dogs are very popular now.  I've seen lots of new dog canvases.  The above is my favorite from Melissa Prince, but she has several others available, including a hilarious mystery lovers dachshund that I call "Baskerville."
https://stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=59266&title=Mystery%20Lover%20Dachshund&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Ehrman has lots of fun new dog kits from Magie Hollingworth (second link below shows just one of many)...
https://www.melissaprincedesigns.com/dogs.html

http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Magic__MAGYT.aspx#.XX-seS2ZN3k

…and Pippin has a wonderful black lab.
https://www.theneedlepointer.com/product/black-lab-6/

"Peruvian Reindeer Sweater" from Tapestry Fair
This Tapestry Fair llama is a charmer.  There are two others in the series.
http://www.tapestryfair.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=67&Itemid=1

Designer Unknown
Birds and Halloween continue to be big themes.  This wonderful crow piece with tropical drinks (designer unknown) made me smile.
http://www.laborsofloveneedlepoint.shop/shop/c/p/Crow-Bar-x42937396.htm

Owl with Birds, Mary Lake-Thompson of Melissa Shirley Designs

I like this birds canvas a lot, don't you?  This is from Mary Lake-Thompson, distributed by Melissa Shirley.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/gallery/?bsn=1&fbclid=IwAR1WOhH6nSFrq2p5TDIc4HpSQKNMJa1LZaVFOM5pQWzfFqb3ZnolW_b_wZs

The Owl from Sandra Gilmore

I love this owl.  It appears to be from Sandra Gilmore of Once in a Blue Moon Designs/Fleur de Paris.  Lots of personality in this bird!
https://www.facebook.com/nestndlpt/photos/pcb.2667027780008491/2667026920008577/?type=3&theater

3K's White Fox Ornament

I also love 3K Design's fox canvas.  There is so much you can do in this small space!
https://needlepoint.com/collections/destination-dallas-2019/products/3k-designs-white-fox-ornament

Amanda Lawford/Vallerie Needlepoint Gallery

Dragons of course are classics.  This Chinese New Year Dragon is from Amanda Lawford of Vallerie Needlepoint Gallery.
https://www.stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/product-page/amanda-lawford-dragon-al037-vng

Love You More
Personally I love stitching people and I really like this Love You More angel.  She's perfect.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2662677637117632&set=pcb.2458556114221532&type=3&theater

Colors of Praise

This small Colors of Praise portrait reminds me of a dear friend.
https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/destination-dallas-2019/products/in236

Face Cards, DJ Designs

This stylized playing card is fun!  I know a lot of folks are intimidated by stitching people but these from the playing cards series would be an easy stitch.  There are quite a few in the set.  Designer is DJ Designs, courtesy of my spies!
https://www.facebook.com/189965167681135/photos/pcb.3254438184567136/3254437461233875/?type=3&theater

Mary Lake-Thompson's "Halloween Pumpkin Hat"

I also really like this Mary Lake-Thompson piece of a witch with her red-winged blackbird and decorated hat.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/galsearch/index.cgi?index=1568489441_51601&col=

Gayla Elliott/The Collection Designs

The new portraits by Gayla Elliott (The Collection Designs) are wonderful.  I think these are all six inches square so they wouldn't be too big to work on.  It's hard to choose one!

Asian Woman, Colors of Praise

But I think this is my very favorite canvas of all I've seen.  It s from Colors of Praise.
https://www.facebook.com/needlehearts18900/photos/pcb.1174336346086547/1174337249419790/?type=3&theater

If you can identify the designer of the folks I can't, please let me know.  Leave a comment below or email me at chillyhollow at hot mail dot com.  Thanks!

UPDATE:  Many thanks to Carolyn Hedge Baird for helping me credit designers.

Stitch Pink in October

Enriched Stitch is organizing a breast cancer fund raiser in October for the shops to host using three new Stitch Pink designs: One from Suzie at Vallerie Needlepoint Gallery, one from Melissa Prince and one from Two Sisters.  They are announcing it now so that stitchers and shops can pre-order.  Each design comes with a full kit and stitch guide by Suzie Vallerie.  It's a fun way to stitch towards a cure for breast cancer.

Don't Forget to Floss UPDATED

Linda at Split the Needle has posted her finished rabbit piece from Melissa Prince.  I'm pretty sure by "floss" for the whiskers she means dental floss.  Who knew?!
http://splittheneedles.blogspot.com/2018/09/white-rabbit.html

Whoops!  It was one ply of DMC cotton floss!  Thanks, Linda.

Wrestling The Old Crow

Just in case you think professional stitchers don't have any problems stitching a painted canvas, here's Suzie Vallerie working away at Melissa Prince's "Old Crow."  She's had to rip out, use stitches she hates and more!  Just like the rest of us.  I've always liked this design and although I would not stitch it this way, it's going to be lovely.
http://astheneedleturns.com/its-been-too-long/

For other admirers of this canvas, Janeann Sleeman has also written a guide for this canvas.  Suzie's version above will be available as a guide shortly, once she wrestles all those pumpkins to the ground!

When to Compensate and When to Not Compensate

Melissa Prince's Japan Travel Coaster

I'm currently stitching the mountain in the background of the "Japan Travel Coaster" from Melissa Prince Designs.  Working on the mountain brings up an interesting point—how to handle compensation between areas when you are using the same stitch for them all.  I'm stitching the mountain using the same stitch, but changing threads as the colors of the mountain change.  When I finished, I ended up with this—

Mountain Stitched
Take a closer look a the area where the burgundy turns into pink and the pink turns into white.  The stitches in burgundy reach up into the pink area.  I did not compensate the edges of that area.  I think in most cases it is better to continue the stitch rhythm instead of shortening a stitch to stop that color at the edge.  However, I did compensate the white area at the top of the mountain somewhat where it will bleed into the sky since I'm going to use a different stitch for the sky.  I also compensated somewhat at the white-pink edge as the change from a medium dark pink to white is pretty drastic.  I really didn't need to do that, however, as I ended up putting beads on top of the white-pink edge to create clouds and snow on Mt. Fuji.  The beads hide any compensation I did or did not do.

Margins Hidden by Beads
Compensation is an interesting topic.  I usually don't compensate between areas as I think it is more important to continue the stitch rhythm, but there are lots of exceptions to that rule.

Wonderful Finishing

Nimble Needle in New Jersey has just posted photographs of their latest batch of finished items that have returned from the finishers they use.   There are all sorts of special touches--like switching the color of cording on ornaments to outline a snowman's face in white.  You can see how even a few beads add weight to a piece, admire the ruching on eggs, or the tilt of a dreidel maintained by something heavy inside.  Karen shows off the acrylic trays from Kreative Koncepts which allow a small piece of needlepoint to be slid inside.  The stitching is fabulous, too.
http://nimbleneedlenj.com/finished-ornaments-plus-more/

Standard sized acrylic trays are available from Kate Dickerson, Melissa Prince and Cooper Oaks plus your local shop may have a source that can make them to your specs.

Kathy has also put sharks on a tooth fairy pillow, complete with pocket. The second link below is a finished pillow from Barbara's Needlepoint.

Melissa Prince has a movie coaster for Finding Nemo with a pretty large toothy shark.

My Personal Favorites from TNNA Winter 2015 Part Three

From Elizabeth Turner Collection's Vintage Fashion Series

As promised, I have a few more favorites from the TNNA Market that just ended.  I promise not to add any more owl canvases to the list, but I did notice another new trend at Market--dress forms showing off vintage fashions.  The red Chinese cheongsam above is from Elizabeth Turner.  It is one of quite a few fashion pieces, all displayed on a dress form with a plain background.

Lani's Fashion

Lani has also created similar pieces, most of which seem to be in a 1950s style. Many have a similar purse canvas, too, in case you want a framed set.  Lani's dresses are also on dress forms but she has patterned backgrounds and a border around hers.  Same theme--different interpretation.

Melissa Prince also does Fashion

When I think of fashion, I think of classic movie stars like Audrey Hepburn.    If you are movie-mad, this smaller and simpler piece is from Melissa Prince.  Small and simple doesn't mean unsophisticated, though.  Breakfast at Tiffany's, anyone?

Elizabeth Turner's Geisha

If you like fashion from the Japanese perspective, this Elizabeth Turner canvas spotted by Vicky DeAngelis might be right up your alley.

Lynne Andrew's Wild Animal Santa (Painted Pony)

If you love stitching Santas, this new one from Lynne Andrew/Painted Pony might catch your eye like it did mine.  Painted Pony has at least five other Santas in various colors and styles from Lynne's talented paintbrush but this one was my favorite with its woodland animal theme.  Lynne also does some wonderful primitive farm scenes that fans of Cooper Oaks and Ewe and Eye will enjoy.

DJ Designs in the Mayan Jungle

When it comes to wild animals, my favorite canvas is from DJ Designs.  The real leopard is echoed by a Mayan-style one in the background.

Elizabeth Turner's Foo Dog

I'm going to close with one more stylized animal--a Chinese foo dog.  This canvas is from Elizabeth Turner.  I love the colors and the lines.  This is the sort of thing I'd love to stitch, assuming I could give up sleeping!

This brings to a close my review of the canvases I particularly liked from the many, many new ones that have premiered at the TNNA Winter show in Phoenix.  You'll notice I didn't include links to any websites.  That's because these are so new that they aren't readily available yet.  Even the designer websites aren't updated with photos of them yet in many cases.  Many shops will have placed orders that will start appearing this spring, so stay tuned at a shop near you.

Thanks for patiently letting me show off my favorites.  Now, what were yours?

Here is an unusual bit of finishing--a snow globe.

There is lots of amazing stitching AND finishing here from customers of Nimble Needle.

Finally, it's appropriate that the final finishing for this first Friday of the new year is a new baby's ornament for the First Christmas.  We wish the little one much joy in life!
