My Favorites from Spring 2020

With the disruption the Coronavirus has brought us during the spring of 2020, we didn't have a spring trade show in Orlando but that doesn't mean our designers haven't been busy creating temptations for us!  Here are my favorites from the late winter-early spring.

Gayla Elliott's Cleopatra

I always like Gayla Elliott's little portraits of woman.  This is Cleopatra.  She would be a delight to stitch!

Continuing the theme of Egypt (A personal favorite but hey!  This is MY favorites list!) is this fun Egyptian cat from Maggie.  Abstract designs don't usually grab me but I really like this one.  Snooty cats are always fun, right?

Heidi Stanley's Lucky Cat

Heidi Stanley has a great Lucky Cat design that would be really fun to do as well.

Green Tiger from Hello Tess

Labors of Love's Wicked Queen

Want more of a challenge?  Look at this Labors of Love canvas of the evil stepmother queen from Snow White that Amy Bunger will use as a Home Study starting probably next fall.  It'll be a real challenge but Amy Bunger is up to it.

Melissa Prince's Winter Hummingbird

Needlepoint During an Epidemic UPDATED

With the coronavirus that appeared in Wuhan, China last December rampaging its way across the world, things have changed.  Needlepointers tend to be older and sicker than non-needlepointers, so we are going to have to be careful about how we live our lives to help slow down the spread of this very contagious disease among our tribe and among the rest of the world, too.  The good news is that we don't have to upend everything to do our part.  This article, from a blog written by a stitching friend's son-in-law who happens to be a specialist in infectious diseases in animals, gives you plenty of common sense tips that are easy to follow, including one I've not heard before—and I am pretty well read.

Armed with this knowledge, we also have to think about the impact of the cancellation of the Orlando trade show on our beloved designers and shops, not to mention the thread-makers and those who provide tools for our stitching pleasure.  Since we are going to be safe at home more than usual, how about browsing the "Spring Needlepoint Show" tab and look at links to some of the newest stuff, then email or call your favorite shop and order something?  Don't have a favorite shop?  Not to worry—there's a tab called "Recommended Online Shops" here that has names of highly recommended stores to choose from.  Some of them are particularly helpful for those of us who are not in the United States and some are based overseas.  So we can all do our part to keep shops and designers afloat until things return to normal.  And—except for those who lose someone dear to them to COVID-19—it will return to normal eventually.

Until then, we can occupy ourselves by being kind to each other and stitching our brains out.

Winter 2018 TNNA Favorites UPDATED

Each trade show I try to pick my favorite canvases. It's hard, as that is a very personal choice and there are so many great things!  But here are my favs in no particular order:

Scary Books, By Melissa Shirley Designs

The first piece that caught my eye is Melissa Shirley's "Scary Books," complete with angry rat.  This a a fairly large piece, at 16x9 inches on 18 count canvas.  I love the fancy book bindings!

"Dragon" From Kimberly Design

Kimberly's "Dragon" is perfect for the little boy in your life.  Check out the swords and the dragon peeking down at the top!  It's also on 18 count and is 10 inches by 11 inches.    Kimberly's designs are distributed by Ruth Schmuff, by the way.

Seaside Topiary is from Pepperberry Designs.  I find the pastels soothing and charming and I think the background could be made gorgeous to set off the little topiary tree.  It's also on 18 count and is 7x11 inches.

Zecca's "Smile Mask"

I really like Zecca's "Smile Mask" which at 12 x 9 1/2  on 18 count. It's bigger than it looks but it would be a blast to stitch.

VNG's "Perk Up"

Speaking of a fun stitch, how about Perk Up from Vallerie Needlepoint Gallery?   It cracks me up!  I don't know the size or stitch count on this one yet, but I love the lime green and the graphic nature of this cutie.  Coming up with the right background stitch (tiny coffee cups?) would make this a hilarious gift for those of us who aren't alive until that morning cuppa is drunk.

Three of the Eight Leigh Design "Tissue Toppers"

These Tissue Toppers from Leigh Designs are a sentimental favorite as I watched Carolyn stitch the patriotic model and Pat stitch the animal skins and poppies beauty.    They are gorgeous in person.     I also like that there are 8 versions, each totally different.  Click on the photo of each that has a stitch guide listed on the Leigh website to get a good view of them flat and finished.  They are 9 x 5 1/2 finished on 18 count but there is more stitching involved than that since you have four sides and the top.

Mary Lake-Thompson's Border Collie

I am really fond of the winter dogs and cats from Mary Lake-Thompson/Melissa Shirley.The small Border Collie portrait above is just one example of these really fun designs.  They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are on 18 and 13 count.

John Johannsen's "Indian Angel"

Speaking of Melissa Shirley Designs, she has reproduced this gorgeous John Johannsen portrait.  It is big at 20x10 on 13 count, but it is beautiful.

Favorites from TNNA's June 2016 Show

Otto Agular's "3 Ladies with Wildflowers"

Once again I've collected my personal favorites from the June 2016 TNNA show. There are a range of designs, some from new designers, some from well-known names. But all of them caught my eye for one reason or another.  

Above is a new Otto Agular from Purple Palm Designs.  This is called "Three Ladies with Wildflowers."  I think it is a lovely mix of colors and shapes.  Easy to stitch?  Probably not but I adore the facial expressions.  You can make up endless stories about what these three are thinking and feeling.

Barbar Tourtilloutte/HSN Designs

Hingham Square Needlepoint is developing a line of canvases under the HSN Designs name.  My favorite so far  is this adaptation of Barbara Tourtilloutte's artwork.  I call him Moose-y Christmas in my own mind.  The framework of the beech trees and the top and bottom borders are wonderful as is the sweet subject matter.

dede's Celestial Wizard

Fleur de Paris posted the front and back of dede Odgen's "Celestial Wizard" on Facebook.  Definitely my favorite double-sided canvas!  Ok, so it's the only double-sided canvas I noticed that's new but I do like the wizard and his companion owl a lot.

Colors of Praise

Another favorite is this new Colors of Praise canvas of a sunbather and a turtle. How wonderful is that?!  I love stitching people and love the tropical feel of this encounter of two sunbathers.

Sascalia's "Snowy Foxes"

I also adore this "Snowy Foxes" canvas from Sascalia which has a light feel, much different than the usual snowy scenes.  The pastel colors and the fresh greens and golds make this a late spring snowstorm kind of piece, which is very unusual.  I like unusual!  The artwork is distributed by Golden Needlepoint.

Mary Lake-Thompson's Nutcracker Ornament

I don't usually like nutcracker pieces as I find those teeth creepy, but I really like Mary Lake-Thompson's new nutcracker ornament.   I like the rounded shapes and the expression on his little face.  This is part of a series of small ornaments that would make a spectacular display.

Cleo'a Mummy is 31 inches tall!

I'm always a sucker for canvases with themes taken from Ancient Egypt.  This tall beauty is from Labors of Love and would be great fun to stitch.  I'd buy a ornament of just her head, not having a place for such a large piece here.  (hint hint)

Squid and Whale (Charley Harper)

I am not really a fan of Charley Harper designs, although they are extremely well done and often quite funny, but this fight between a squid and a whale caught my eye, probably because I am a big fan of squid, octopi and cuttlefish.
