Ok, here's something I've not seen before—turkeywork with beads! This is Julia Snyder's idea and Suzanne did a great job with it. The canvas is from And More, which is Julia's canvas line, and it uses her line of beads, too. Suzanne's doing a nice job with this, trying lots of techniques to make it something special. Hope we get to see this finished before too long.

Wool and Willow and Circles and Ovals
This week's posting from the Sheena's Sweet Stitches blog has lots of stitches and lots of photographs. This week Sheena shows off a Julia Snyder class at Wool and Willow in Ohio plus she has diagrammed four oval stitches for your stitching pleasure.

Have fun visiting Sheena, Julia Snyder and of course Wool and Willow. By the way, you can see the canvas Sheena's working on at the Pepperberry website. It's in the fifth row from the top in their "What's New" section.

Playing with Julia Snyder
Linda at the NJNA blog (that's the New Jersey Needle Artists chapter of ANG) just took a canvas embellishment class with Julia Snyder at the Enriched Stitch in Connecticut. Lucky for us, she wrote about it. I'm particularly happy she talks a bit about how the class unfolded, since not every class is right for every student. It's always good to know how a class is organized to see if that fits with one's own learning style. Many thanks, Linda!

Two New Books and Mini Reviews
Homestead Needle Arts posted two mini reviews of the new Julia Snyder and the new Michael Boren & Carole Lake books in the shop e-newsletter. I thought folks contemplating buying either would like to read what Theresa says about what's inside. If you aren't into stitching books, don't worry. There's lots more in the newsletter!

If you want to pick up a copy, you can get on Theresa's order list for Julia's book or pick up one of the Carole/Michael books at her website.

Threadaholic Alert: Coloured Spiral from Golden Hinde (and more)
This message is for all my fellow threadaholics--Mary Corbet has found something called coloured spiral at the Golden Hinde website in the UK.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2014/12/mesmerized-by-thread-2.html
I know you "need" some because I "need" some, too! Spiral Posh, anyone?
http://www.golden-hinde.co.uk/Gold-Work/1768/goldwork-embroidery-supplies-coloured-spiral.html
By the way, if this is a little too thick or wide for your current canvas, check out what Julia Snyder did with Access Commodities' silk wrapped purl in a class for Bedecked and Beadazzled.

Parma Violet, anyone?

Bird Ideas
Do you have trouble stitching birds? If so, you'll want to ogle what Stephanie is doing courtesy of a Rent Amy Bunger day at Amy's Golden Strand in Memphis.
http://stephsstitching.blogspot.com/2014/09/amy-bunger-is-wonderful.html
Julia Snyder is going to stitch the new Garden Party canvas (design by Vicki Sawyer/Melissa Shirley) in the spring at Enriched Stitch in Connecticut. This canvas is full of birds and inventive ways of stitching them.
http://astheneedleturns.com/garden-party-class-with-julia-snyder/
Finally, Judy has stitched all six of Eye Candy's owls. Aren't they amazing?!
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2014/09/judys-owls.html
Next time you are paralyzed for ideas, think of what these bird brains have come up with!

Barjello Magic (in Class)
Ruth shares the fun her customers had in a Bargello class with Julia Snyder. Folks picked a canvas from her And More line, then choose stitches from her iBargello book and stitched their brains out.

The Texture Queen
The Queen of Texture arrived in the Baltimore area over the weekend and began to work her magic in class at Bedecked and Beadazzled. There are a lot of great ideas here, all documented by Ruth Schmuff, shop owner and our local spy. Thanks, Ruth!

Julia and Vicky and Robin On The Road
Julia Snyder was just at Bedecked and Beadazzled and now is headed to Enriched Stitch! Vicky DeAngelis was just at Enriched Stitch! Then Robin King was at The Needle Bug! The teaching circuit is in full force now that the weather is good. If you want a peak at what their classes are like or you just want to check out the shop interior shots, try the links below. I hope the teaching circuit includes your favorite shop so you can have more fun than is probably legal, too.

A Peak Inside
Pocket Full of Stitches has posted photographs of brand new canvases and books they've received on their blog. Because they show pages from the books, I am putting this link here instead of in the TNNA Winter 2013 tab. Anyone who thinks they might want to add either June McKnight's Colorful Backgrounds or Julia Snyder's Great Layers for Needlepoint to their collection can get some idea of what the books are like from this.

Clever Ideas Shared
I've been collecting clever ideas this week from all the blogs I read. Ready to be amazed? First up, Brenda Hart taught Vicky how to cleverly create handles for What's the Point tote bag ornaments with rushed River Silks ribbon. The second link has more information about the background stitches and shows off the inside of the totes better.

If you need some tote bag ornaments for your tree, here's the website. These are from Linda Lahm, by the way.
http://www.whatsthepoint.biz/lindalahm.cfm
Anne has a very clever (and easy to compensate) stitch for the background behind her penguin. I especially love that she used a white metallic to simulate sparkling snow!
http://thecapestitcher.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-background-for-pete.html
The penguin is one of Anne's designs. The others from the Penguins on Parade series are on her website.
http://www.absdesignsonline.com/penguins.htm
Needle Nicely just repurposed a Christmas stocking by removing the name at the top and refinishing it so that it would work as a fundraiser. Anyone who needs to remove a name on their stocking, take note that many finishers say this is a tricky business.

Want to see amazing chickens? Or a great stocking top? Needle Works is the place.

How about a Velvet Stitch beard? Classic!
http://suzannehicks.blogspot.com/2012/11/velvet-stitch.html
Check out the clever open stitch on Santa's bag and the beautiful open gold metallic pattern on the striped border, all courtesy of Julia Snyder's class at Bedecked and Beadazzled!

Introducing Hal Mayforth (and Updated Ryn)
Ruth Schmuff not only runs the needlepoint shop Bedecked and Beadazzled, she distributes painted canvases. She's just added a brand new designer to the mix, Hal Mayforth. His art is fun personified and already Brenda Hart and Julia Snyder are stitching pieces from his collection. You can see (and laugh) here--

Ruth also distributes designs from Ryn. They are always fun and fresh and ready for embellishment!

Eye Candies for the Soul
Today I have a collection of lovely finished pieces for you to enjoy. First, an antique Bargello piece from the EGA collection that they charted a few years back for their magazine.
http://www.egausa.org/scripts/blog/?p=285
Robin King recently got a photograph from one of her students of class pieces that won ribbons at Woodlawn. What a thrill! Actually I've had the pleasure of seeing some of Lori's work at her shop, Waste Knot. Trust me, Robin, the photos don't do these justice.
http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com/2012/07/ribbons-at-woodlawn-2012.html
Needle Bug has two bracelets, and a purse just back from the finisher. The bracelets are from a Julia Snyder class but I'm not sure about the Melissa Shirley purse.
http://theneedlebug.com/2012/07/just-back/
Speaking of eye candy, check out this spectacular Eye Candy design stitched by the incredible Palma. If she had time to do stitch guides, we'd all be lining up at her door!
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2012/08/a-finish-for-friday.html
Absolutely Needlepoint has some wonderful small pieces and ornaments to show off.

Want to see how a Texas Hill Country cottage is decorated?
http://www.livingwithneedlepoint.com/2012/07/25/home-tour-mariannes-hill-country-house/
It's a crime that no one knows who created the Brockhampton Church Embroideries. To my eye, there are at least three stitchers at work. What do you think?

Purses
Labels:
Julia Key H. Snyder,
purses
Needlepoint purses are some of the loveliest ways to showcase your needle art. We are all familiar with purse canvases from folks like Elizabeth Turner Designs and Melissa Shirley that are especially shaped and designed to be turned into a purse, but as Needle Bug shows, many canvases can function beautifully as pocketbooks of one style or another.

Anyone remember the Brenda Hart book on stitching purses from Red Thread Designs? Dale has stitched several of them. They make great little tool bags or an evening purse when you don't need everything and the kitchen sink inside your pocketbook.

Here's It's In The Bag. Great little book! Actually, I have a copy I've not opened in several years. Post a comment below (or email me at chillyhollow at hot mail dot com) and I'll do a random drawing of the names on June 15th and send it to the winner. There's no need for it to languish here when someone else will treasure and use it.

While the designers and shops were at Destination Dallas, lots of other things were going on at the shops that didn't make the trip. For one thing, Bedecked and Beadazzled celebrated their Fifth Anniversary in style! Instead of cake, there were classes galore!
