Wonderful Finishing

Nimble Needle in New Jersey has just posted photographs of their latest batch of finished items that have returned from the finishers they use.   There are all sorts of special touches--like switching the color of cording on ornaments to outline a snowman's face in white.  You can see how even a few beads add weight to a piece, admire the ruching on eggs, or the tilt of a dreidel maintained by something heavy inside.  Karen shows off the acrylic trays from Kreative Koncepts which allow a small piece of needlepoint to be slid inside.  The stitching is fabulous, too.

Cooper Oaks Goes Plastic

Until I saw a posting by Barbi Sherman of Canvases By Barbi on Facebook, I had no idea that Cooper Oaks sells acrylic boxes and frames for needlepoint. There's a huge range of styles, from towel holders to trivets to frames and trays.

Barbi uses the clip board style insert for her frameweight canvases.  She trims the canvas close and uses a sticky backing felt to hide the underside since the clipboard piece is clear.  Sadly, there are no photos of her pieces inserted in the clipboard but you can see the unstitched canvases here.

Patti Mann is re-releasing the Russian Nesting Doll Nativity set.  This is a Darcy Predmore design that Patti Mann distributes.   It's a wonderful series of nine canvases:  Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, the three Wise Men, the shepherd, a camel and an angel.  The pieces are all roughly  7 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches except for Baby Jesus which is only 3 1/2 by 5 inches.  Each piece is roughly $80.  If you are curious, these and other new pieces should be up on Patti Mann's website by early February.

A Bit of This and That

Last night I finished all the top stitching on Deborah Kerr but I was too pooped to start working on the sashing.  That will wait until today.  She's very pretty in her finished state.  I have seen the layered trellis technique in many designs but never used it myself.  It's a keeper, simple to do, with a nice jewel latticework as the end result.  The layered grid in the corners is very similar and also very pretty.  These are stitches worth using on painted canvases if you have a suitable space.  It's not just for counted canvaswork, in other words.

Speaking of counted canvaswork, Gay Ann Rogers has started her Pre-Week Sale. Each year she sells some of her charted designs for a week in October.  Unless you take one of her classes, these designs are not available except during this yearly sale.  The week before the sale starts, Gay Ann offers a new little piece as an introduction to the Big Sale.  This Pre-Week sale starts today with a tiny scissors case that has a unique angel design made of beads.  This probably won't be available again as Gay Ann sells out quickly and she says the beads are unique.  So if you are interested, get moving!  And remember to visit her site again next Monday when the Big Sale starts.

No, your eyes aren't failing you. I was suddenly tired of the ivory background I've used on Blog for quite a while yesterday and changed it.  I tried sage green first, then settled on pale pink as easier on the eyes.  I'm always looking for something that is easy to read on a variety of monitors and this layout works, so I haven't changed it. But eventually it will start to look tired to me and I'll change it again.

I'd stitch the faux tortoiseshell handle in something soft like Vineyards silk (tent stitches) and also tent stitch the lettering using metallics for maximum shine (I prefer Coronet Braid when it comes to metallic bling).  Then you can have fun with a decorative laid stitch for the purse background.  Try using subtle neutral shades couching down something metallic, also in a neutral shade.  See the links below for various possibilities for that purse background stitch.

I'd rotate this stitch so that the long stitches covered by XS run horizontally but this would look great in two shades of tan with a metallic gold couched line and a second tan metallic for the dashes.

Cooper Oaks Trunk Show

Fireside Stitchery has a big group of Cooper Oaks photos on their website and plan to add more as they have a trunk show going from this designer. Cooper Oaks is well known for their beach canvases but they also have the fun canvas Girlfriends (right, page 6 on the website), belts, some nice loud Hawaiian shirts, and now an interesting alphabet series (starting on page 18) that has a giant letter and one thing that starts with it in a folk art style.
