Threadaholic Alert: Bisous

Tilli Thomas' newest thread--a silk/wool blend called Bisous--is appearing in the shops.

This Planet Earth thread is a thin, single strand of half Merino wool, half silk.  KC Needlepoint says it is thinner than Essentials.  It comes in 30 yard skeins and Planet Earth describes it as "suitable for 18 and 16 mesh."  Rittenhouse recommends 2 strands on 18 count and 3 on 13 count for full coverage.

You can see photos of the colors at this link.

Fun with ANG and NJNA

The New Jersey Needle Artists Chapter of ANG ends September 2025 with lots of local and national ANG news, including a video all about the 2026 ANG National Seminar in Denver.  You can see the classes to be offered in this YouTube video.

There's also news of Debbie Rowley's website being hacked, a new silk/wool blend from Tilli Thomas called Bisous, another new Facebook group for needlepointers, a new needlepoint shop in NJ, a new large Mahjong mat with a garden theme from Kate Dickerson, at least four new monthly clubs, plus more!

Threadaholic Alert: Milan

The latest NJNA newsletter let me know Planet Earth Fibers has a new thread called Milan.

According to this article at KC Needlepoint, Milan is a single strand thread that is half silk and half merino wool (basically a thicker version of Essentials) meant to be used on 13 count canvas.

Currently KC Needlepoint has all the colors in stock if you want to try it.

UPDATE:  Nimble Needle Atlanta says Milan now comes on smaller cards in case you just need a little of 1-2 colors.

Planet Earth's Key Fob Instructions

Key Fob, Canvas, Instructions, Paper Pattern

I received one of Planet Earth's key fobs as a present for Christmas, along with a tiny canvas and two cards of Planet Earth's Essentials.  Lucky me!  If you haven't seen them in person, the fob is made from heavy leather with a key ring and a clip to attach to your purse or tote bag. They come in a large selection of colors and are self-finishing.

All you need is a canvas that's about an inch in diameter and you are good to go.  My canvas is from Kristine Kingston and is a darling little Adirondack chair.  Check with your favorite shop.  They often kit the fob with a coordinating canvas and the threads needed to stitch it.

My canvas and fob came with two cards of Planet Earth Fibers' Essentials, which is a silk-wool blend sort of like Caron's Impressions but smaller in diameter.  Stitch the canvas (which will only take 2-3 hours) and follow these instructions:

An instruction card comes with the key fob.  I measured the canvas and the key fob area where it will go and discovered I should stitch up to, but not over, the gray line surrounding the canvas.  After I stitched the design I cut it out at the outside edge of the gray line so there's one unstitched thread left.  I recommend you stitch the canvas in basketweave for durability as you have to shove the canvas under the leather and it'll be tossed in your bag and bang against things.

I suggest besides using a butter knife (some folks use leather burnishers or the blue tack remover that comes with a box of tacks for attaching canvas to your stretcher bars) that you use tweezers to help get all the waxed paper away from the sticky surface.  It will sometimes tear off unevenly and leave a bit under the leather edge.  A little doesn't matter but you want to get the bigger pieces up.  Tweezers help with that.

Center your canvas and push it down in the middle with your thumbs, then use your fingernail (or the butter knife or similar tool) to go around the inside edge, pushing the canvas down there.  You'll have the edges sticking up as you see on the paper pattern I made above.  That is what you want.

Now you can take the blunt tool you've chosen to lift up the leather lip slightly.  Use the tool to push the outside edge of the canvas under the leather.  Continue around the canvas--lifting the leather, then pushing the canvas under it.  The canvas is stiff so go slowly and work it under gently.  If you have a thread start to come away, don't worry.  Cut it off if you can or shove it under the leather lip with the butter knife.

Once the canvas is under the edge of the leather, press it down with your fingers well, just in case you didn't get it firmly stuck to the sticky layer earlier.  Add your keys and you are good to go!

In case you missed it, Planet Earth Fibers has posted a video on how to insert needlepoint into their self-finishing boxes and ornaments.

Ninety Minutes of Self Finishing

Needlepoint Clubhouse and The Wool and The Floss have collaborated on a self-finishing show on Instagram.  The two shop owners have paired all their self-finishing items with matching canvases and show them off to you so you can see options.

By the way, Planet Earth Fiber has a video on how to do self-finishing for their products.  This is really how all the self-finishing items work.

Here are the shop websites so you can do more shopping.

Breaking News: Essentials in 30 Yard Skeins

Do you like Planet Earth's Essentials by Tilli Thomas but don't like the fact that there is only 10 years of silk-wool on each card?  Not to worry!  Needle Bug in Montgomery, Alabama says that 30 yard skeins are now available.  This is great if you have a lot of background, for example.  The larger skeins aren't on the Needle Bug website yet but if your favorite shop doesn't have this, you can contact Needle Bug and ask about the colors you want.

Threadaholic Alert: Essentials Available from Terry Dryden Designs UPDATED

Terry Dryden just announced she is now selling Planet Earth's Tilli Thomas Essentials and posted all the available colors.  This thread is half silk and half merino wool and works well on 18 count. (I find it a bit thin myself but your stitch tension may be much different than mine.)

Threadaholic Alert: Tillie Thomas Essentials from Planet Earth Fibers

There's a new thread in town! It's called Essentials and it is half silk and half Merino wool.  It is thinner than Pepper Pot Silk, which I find a little fat for 18 count (but others think Pepperpot perfect for 18 count canvases so this is probably related to stitch tension).  This is available from Planet Earth Fibers.  Suzie Vallerie loves it and promises a review later on when she's not so busy getting ready for the Orlando show. (second link)

There are 130 colors and 10 yards of thread on each card.  Stay tuned!

Jewelry Boxes in Many Colors and Shapes

Lee has added two new colors to their line of self-finishing jewelry cases.
https://yarntree.typepad.com/needlework_news/2019/02/new-jewelry-case-colors.html,

Planet Earth Fiber has another style of jewelry case available.  Their colors are more limited but this is very new for them.
https://pocketfullofstitches.blogspot.com/2019/02/planet-earth-jewelry-cases.html

You can browse the Colonial Needle website (they own the Lee line) for canvases sized to fit their jewelry boxes.  Look for the BB canvases.
https://colonialneedle.com/pages/lees-needle-arts

Planet Earth Fiber has canvases sized to fit their cases, too.
http://blog.planetearthfiber.com/leather-self-finishing-jewelry-cases/

And of course other designers are creating pieces that fit.  Mindy's new designs for the Planet Earth Fiber jewelry cases are a good example.  These are so new they are not on the Mindy website yet, just her Facebook page.

All About Pepper Pot

Suzie at Enriched Stitch says that Pepper Pot Silk is her best-selling thread in the shop.  It is wildly popular, but like Suzie, I find it too thick for 18 count.  If I ply it, it works, but it will have slubs and thick/thin spots.  Regardless, you'll want to check this thread out and read Suzie's information.

A New Shade of Pink

Patricia Sone shows off a new shade of Planet Earth Fiber's Furr Fuzz Fun thread, and a canvas she will be using it on.  I think it is perfect for the inside of ears, for noses, and probably for a baby's fuzzy outfit.
http://patriciasone.blogspot.com/2016/06/luscious.html

Patricia will teach this at Needlepoint This! in October, by the way.

Pepperpot Skin

Pepperpot Silks in Skin Tones
I have a new batch of thread that I'm looking forward to using--Pepperpot Silk's new skin tones!  There are six shades which you can tell from the photograph.  I included a photograph of Melissa Shirley's new "Angel with Tree"so you can see how the colors coordinate with painted canvas faces.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/gallery/?index=7865&cat=70

This design is on 18 count, by the way.  Pepperpot Silk generally does good tent stitch coverage on 18 count but I like to split each strand into three as my stitch tension is fairly loose.  As long as I am careful to cut out the thick or thin spots in the plies, it works nicely for me.    If your stitching tension is tighter than mine, you'll find a strand of Pepperpot Silk as it comes off the skein perfect for 18 count tent stitches.

The colors are (left to right) --
Baked Alaska 192
Fondant 190
Fresh 191
Powder Puff 193
Shell 195
Tippy Toes 194

I will probably use 195 and 192 for the rosy cheeks and 194 or 190 for the rest of her skin.  If you want to see larger photos, try these at the Planet Earth Fiber website.  Each skein has 30 yards of thread, by the way.
http://www.planetearthfiber.com/index.php/needlepoint-fiber/pepper-pot-silk

I've seen a lot of shops announcing they have these new colors in stock, so ask at your favorite local shop to pick up a set if you like stitching folks a lot like I do and you enjoy using Pepperpot Silk.

Let's Make a Ribbon Flower

Elizabeth made a video at In Stitches of Janet demonstrating how to make a ribbon rose flower.  This is a technique that Janet learned at the TNNA Winter show.  Basically you come up with your silk ribbon, then make a Colonial knot followed by a French knot followed by several running stitches, then you go down through the canvas with your needle.  It's not hard but you probably want to see the video to understand.  The silk ribbon with the different colored edge is from Planet Earth Fiber.
https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=656298941158846&set=o.108537025890131&type=2&theater

By the way, Janet agreed to Elizabeth's making and sharing the video with us.

Vicky's in Love--Again UPDATED

I know just how Vicky DeAngelis feels as I have a new favorite thread or color about every other day.  Vicky's head over heels with the new silk ribbon from Planet Earth Fiber.  Here is what she says about it.

New Hand Painted Silk Ribbons from Planet Earth

Orna Willis has added the new silk ribbons from Planet Earth Fibers to her Etsy store. She's including them in her thread and bead packs.  Another new silk ribbon, you say?  Why is that big news?  Because the edges of these ribbons are hand painted to have a different shade to them, making them unique.
http://ornadesign.blogspot.com/2014/08/introduction-to-new-silk-ribbon-and-new.html

If you'd like to see the colors Orna has, visit her Etsy shop.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/ADORNBYORNA?section_id=all

Apparently these ribbons come in solid or tonal colors.  The tonal colors come in three widths:  4mm, 7mm and 10mm.  The solid comes only in 4mm.  I think the "tonal" ribbons are the ones with the hand painted edges but it is hard to tell from the Planet Earth site.  Regardless, this is worth exploring if you want a little zing in your silk ribbons.

Furr-Fuzz-Funn

Planet Earth Fiber has announced a new thread called Furr-Fuzz-Funn. This is a mix of kid mohair from baby goats and silk and it is playable plyable.  (Sorry!) This is very different from the synthetic and wool fuzzy threads we have available now as it will probably have the sheen of silk and you can ply up or down to achieve the coverage you want for the stitch and canvas count of your choice.
http://www.planetearthfiber.com

Right now the colors are black, whites, gray and browns.  I haven't seen this yet but if I manage to get my hands on some I'll report back.
