New: A Seam Ripper/Laying Tool Combo

In Stitches is just back from the Nashville TNNA show, which is mostly cross stitch. They came home with a tool that is new to me--a seam ripper/laying tool combination.  You can see it on their blog in the last photo.  Those who visit In Stitches after leaving the Woodlawn Exhibit can take a peek at them in person.  (In Stitches is very close to Woodlawn Plantation.)

The original intention is for these to be a stiletto/seam ripper but the stiletto end works well as a laying tool.

BREAKING NEWS: Birthe Cacciatore has Died

Debra Wallerstein just announced on Facebook that Birthe Cacciatore has died. One of the founders of In Stitches in Lake Worth, Florida, Birthe was mentor to many needlepointers and an inspiration to many more.  It is sad to lose such a talented and influential stitcher and teacher but she leaves behind many friends and great memories.

Let's Make a Ribbon Flower

Elizabeth made a video at In Stitches of Janet demonstrating how to make a ribbon rose flower.  This is a technique that Janet learned at the TNNA Winter show.  Basically you come up with your silk ribbon, then make a Colonial knot followed by a French knot followed by several running stitches, then you go down through the canvas with your needle.  It's not hard but you probably want to see the video to understand.  The silk ribbon with the different colored edge is from Planet Earth Fiber.

In Stitches Does Halloween

In Stitches is the counted thread shop (with knitting and needlepoint) close to the entrance to Woodlawn Plantation. They offer a lot of counted and cross stitch patterns but they also have needlepoint, so I wasn't totally surprised when their Halloween blog posting featured two wonderful needlepoint patterns.  First there's Shelly Tribbey's skeleton in a top hat, perfect for the Halloween dandy!  I think finishing this in a little coffin would be perfect!

The Next Big Thing

In Stitches-Atlanta just posted a video on Facebook that shows Laura Taylor demonstrating how to bead letters using stem stitches. This is the next big thing--stringing beads on various stitches.

Try it with a Rhodes stitch for berries....

Rachel also mentions something in her Tudor Rose class on 17th Century embroidery techniques and threads that I think is starting to intrigue needlepoint teachers and stitch guide designers--using multiple threads in one stitch.  This technique is as old as needlepoint.

Woodlawn Fundraiser Sampler

This isn't strictly needlepoint, but I just discovered Nelly's Needlers, the group of stitchers who run the Woodlawn Plantation needlework show, have a sampler design for sale as a fund raiser.   You can see the sampler at the bottom of the page in the link below. The building is Woodlawn Plantation itself without the heavy shrubbery.  This is the shop blog for In Stitches, which is the shop closest to Woodlawn Plantation so you can buy the chart here.  Since we all want to support Nelly's Needlers and many needlepointers dabble in sampler stitching as well, I thought you guys would like to know about this.

Anyone Recognize This?

Does anyone recognize the designer of this lovely group of ladies? A friend is interested in this piece which we found on In Stitches' shop blog. Sadly, the photo was from some years back and the shop doesn't remember the name of the designer as they specialize in counted thread, not needlepoint. Any help would be appreciated!

UPDATE:  Martin found this via Google Images on a cross stitch site.  It is apparently the work of a Polish designer.  I think the photo above is a painted canvas, though.  If anyone knows who distributed it, I would love to know.

Barbara Bergsten Goes to School

Barbara Bergsten's colorful designs are perfect for beginning stitchers. Two different shops are offering beginner classes using her canvases.  In Stitches (Atlanta) is using one of Barbara's samplers,
