Dalmation Dog Technique

Helen M. Stevens is a world-class British embroider who does spectacular natural scenes.  She posted a tip for stitching creatures with spots on her Facebook page.  For those without a FB account, I'll quote Helen as she talks about the spotted butterfly example she posted--  "If you work the spots and other markings FIRST, and then flood the rest of the radial stitching in around them, you will achieve a smooth, even texture for the wing - not unlike the effect on the creature itself. Working the spots on top of the base colour will create an uneven, unconvincing texture...."  Helen calls this the Dalmation Dog technique.  By radial stitching she means satin stitch laid carefully but not necessarily covering the background fabric completely.

Tariffs and Needlepoint

A friend asked me late last summer about how I thought tariffs would impact needlepoint.  As you can see, many designers are uncertain how this is going to work.  Tanya Bentham is an embroiderer in the UK who specializes in Medieval-style embroidery.  Her blog posting about tariffs is typical--she has to do two invoices to include tariff charges.

As for the impact on stitchers, prices will go up because so much of the raw materials for threads and other supplies comes from overseas. Right now the Canadian and UK suppliers are waiting for clarification on how this will all work.   Traditional Stitches in Canada has this to say about tariffs.

I also follow Colour Complements in Canada. Lorraine says that she's got a good grasp on how it will work now. She will have a list of how much tariff you'll pay that will be added on like shipping costs. I think the UK suppliers believe they will have an exception to tariffs but that's still in flux.

Susan Johnson of SJ Designs has discovered that manufacturers of certain bead and satin ribbon items are discontinuing them or going out of business entirely. She's looking for replacements in Central Europe.  I think some older owners of craft supplies businesses will choose to retire instead of coping with it all, especially if they can't find buyers for their firms.  Some items are going to be impossible to get.  Already the importer of Straw Silk is finding it almost impossible to get supplies from overseas and that may have to be discontinued.

A small painted canvas (let's say a 4 inch round) is approaching $90-100 each now. Of course there is still older inventory in the shops that costs $50-70 but you have to want a less popular design. Printed canvases are better quality now and I'm seeing more of them. Needlepoint.com is pointing the way, there.  Moore Stitching is another printed canvas firm with good quality items.  I've stitched both and had no problems, although I admit I don't really have an issue with figuring out what color goes where.  I just pick one and keep going.

But I digress. I think painted canvas prices will continue to climb, threads will be harder to get (and more expensive), and lovely tools and embellishments like the Swarovski crystals that Swarovski is no longer making for the craft market may be harder to find, too.  If you can source good quality tools you want, buy them now.  On the other hand, issues like the problems getting Kreinik plus their switch to putting it on cards instead of spools means we have new suppliers of metallic threads like the Au Ver A Soie metallics that people are importing and the new Reflections metallics that Meredith of M's Canvas House has brought out.  So some companies are getting creative.  Overall, I think some things will be harder to get (embellishments, good quality tools) and others will cost more (painted canvases) and the range of what's available may narrow some. I'm betting older owners of companies manufacturing some of this stuff will throw up their hands and retire but we'll see.

My thoughts, for what they are worth and that's not much!

What do you think?

2MM Flat Sequins Also Discontinued UPDATED

It's not been a good week for needlework supplies--SJ Designs has also discovered the manufacturers of flat sequins in the 2mm size have stopped making them.

If you use these, you can stock up at Susan's website.

UPDATE:  Cartwright's also has them in mixed colors.  I'm sure if you search, you can find other sources, but Cartwright's is my go-to source for sequins if my favorite shops don't have what I need.

Heart My Pastel by Nancy Cucci

Brenda has stitched another very pretty Nancy Cucci heart.  This one is called "Heart My Pastel" and you can find the chart in the July/August 2012 issue of Needlepoint Now magazine.  That's excellent news as usually Nancy Cucci charts are only available through her classes.

The digital version of the magazine is $4.50 on the Needlepoint Now website.

Taming the Wild Metallic (Radiance)

Sharon has been experimenting with the new Radiance metallics on her current Ann Hanson Santa.

Bascially, she waxes the end of the thread she put in the needle's eye.  It helps keep the thread from unraveling.  If your favorite shop doesn't carry beeswax, you can order it online.  Shops that carry metallic threads for goldwork are great sources, or you can order from places like S&J Needleworks.

Visiting The Sign of The Arrow

Mary Corbet is on the road and --being a better person than me-- she allowed just 22 minutes to find and explore Sign of the Arrow in St. Louis, Missouri.

In case you aren't on the road like Mary, you can visit Sign of the Arrow's website.  By the way, this shop is unique in their yearly shop exclusive kit is available either as a painted canvas or a counted thread chart.

The smallest amount of time I've ever spent in a needlepoint shop is 60 minutes.  And I felt quite rushed!

The Smart Cookie Award for November

A friend of Amanda's stitched table numbers for her sister's wedding.  For those of you not on Facebook, they have a pretty border, the number and the initials of the bride and groom.

They are quite pretty, aren't they?  They are on acrylic stands for the wedding but will be used as coasters at the bride's house after.  Very clever!

Handmade Aficots from Devon

Jenny Adin-Christie sells aficots handmade in Devon, England.   These are used to smooth satin stitches, particularly in whitework.

Some are acrylic and some are wooden.  Jenny points out that the acrylic ones can be washed to remove the oils from your hands, which is great if you are doing whitework or stitching with other very light colored threads.  You can shop Jenny's website if you are interested.

Heck, even if you aren't interested you should look at her site.  The embroidery is out of this world!

Cohana Seam Rippers

Chandail carries something I've not seen before--seam rippers made by Cohana.  The glazed tile handles come in two colors, white and gray, each with a coordinating tassel.

Cohana is the Japanese company that makes wonderful scissors.  Here are their embroidery scissors.  I've been lusting after a pair.  These sometimes come in limited edition colors, too.  But shop around.  Prices vary.

The Beetle Stitch

The Flying Needles profiles the beetle stitch on their website.

Beetle Stitch is an oval stitch, great for backgrounds and large areas like a skirt.  Because it is a straight stitch, you'll need to use a thread that is thick enough to cover well.   A laying tool will come in handy if you use silk or cotton floss for this.  The sheen in silk floss is beautiful if it is well laid to be smooth.
