Sara Leigh Organizes

We always get the organization bug in January, so I thought you'd like to see Sara Leigh's new organizational scheme.  I think it looks fabulous!  Wish I was this organized.

NOW I understand! (Jeff Kulick) UPDATED

Jeffrey Kulick's "Deconstructed Log Cabin"

I've been watching Blog's stats and wondering why on earth my articles about Jeffrey Kulick are suddenly popular. The question was answered when the March 2015 issue of Needle Pointers magazine arrived today.  Jeff's "Deconstructed Log Cabin" design is on the cover!  There's a very nice article inside showing several versions of this piece in an amazing assortment of colors you will enjoy.

UPDATE:  Jan of Thread Medley is stitching this piece and talking about how it is done.  I thought you'd like to hear what she says.

Jeff's "Deconstructed Log Cabin--Hot Version"

If you want to see more of his original work, visit these old Blog articles from 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Some of the links to Scarlet Thread are dead now that the shop has closed.  By the way, you can order Jeff's charts by emailing him at jeffkulickdesigns@gmail.com.

The photos are all courtesy of Sara Leigh, by the way.  Many thanks to you and to Jeff for creating such lovely designs and then sharing some of them.  (And if you are going to Woodlawn Plantation's exhibit, see if you can find more of Jeff's work there as he usually sends something.  There may be something new and fab waiting to surprise and delight you....)

The View From Behind the Counter

Donna works part time in one of my two "local" shops and has written a short article about the things she's learned from being on the sales side of the shop counter.  I hope she writes more about her job when she gets back from vacation.  This was very interesting!

Totalling Up The Stash

Fans of counted designs are going to go wild over Sara Leigh's revived blog.   Sara Leigh's photography when she ran Scarlet Thread was outstanding, so you know you are going to love the pictures of her Works in Progress (WIPs).  Let's hope Sara Leith will show many of these designs again as she works on them.
http://remedialstitcher.blogspot.com/2014/07/a-wip-is-wip-is-wip.html

If you are new to counted canvaswork, Sara Leigh will introduce you to designers you've never heard of.  Check the "Counted Canvaswork Designers" tab here on Blog to help you discover where to get these wonderful charts.  Some are no longer available and some are class pieces only, but occasionally you can pick up old class projects from the designer.

Another Profile of Krienik

Thanks to Sare Leigh, I learned of this newspaper article profiling the Kreinik Company and all their products.  Who knew that Kreinik metallics stand up to both salt water and chlorine?!

News for the Counted and Painted Folk UPDATED

There is lots of news today.  Let's start with news for those who love counted canvaswork.  DMC has published a brief but very interesting interview with Orna Willis.
http://dmc-threads.com/interview-orna-willis/

Betsy Morgan has updated her blog to list her current classes.  She's one talented lady!  If you are interested in reproduction samplers and smalls, don't miss looking over her work.  I saw the Toy Chest Etui on display at a needlework show about six years ago. It was amazingly small and detailed.
http://willinghandsstitching.blogspot.com/2013/04/revised-workshop-list.html

UPDATE:  Betsy's posted two brand new designs, both sure to amaze and delight her fans.
http://willinghandsstitching.blogspot.com/2013/04/edinburgh-designs.html

Sara Leigh has posted photographs of the newest Threedles design.  This one Kurdy Biggs calls "Pangea."  SL has done her thread magic and pulled the various color ways that go with each version of the chart so you can admire all the colors.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2013/04/whats-new-you-ask.html

By the way, SL says she forgot to add a link to a good place to get the bling you'll need for Pangea to her article.  Here it is.
http://www.fusionbeads.com/Crystal-Collection

Now to the painted canvas news!  Needle Works has started the second in their series of Nativity pieces from Brenda Stofft.  This new piece is one of the Wise Men, shown on a kneeling elephant.  Want to see the finished Holy Family?  Click on the blog title, then scroll down one entry.
http://www.stitchinginthetexashillcountry.com/the_needle_works/2013/04/share-a-stitch-sunday-april-7-from-santa-fe.html

Enriched Stitch shows off one of Ashley Dillon's designs, the napping Easter Rabbit.  The details are amazing and so is the stitching.
http://astheneedleturns.com/hippity-hoppity/

Speaking of stitching, Barbara Bergsten is stitching one of her new large shift pieces.  Check out those pink flowers!  I think the ladybug pockets will be the next area Barbara will stitch. This design is large and complex but there really are only four elements:  background, flowers, ladybugs and butterflies.  This makes it a great teaching piece for someone who is sticking their toe into fancier stitching.  One you master one element, it is easy to repeat the lesson elsewhere on the design before moving on.
http://createneedlepoint.typepad.com/create_needlepoint/2013/04/pw12-large-shift-needlepoint-progress.html

The final painted canvas news is that the Chilly Hollow Stitch Guides blog has a lot of new guides to tell you about, including one for Brenda Stofft's Rabbit Geisha.  Click on the photo of the magic carpet on the right side of the page to visit, then return here by "riding" the magic carpet back to Blog.

There is Hope

As you know, my favorite online counted thread shop, Scarlet Thread, has closed. I miss it. I don't stitch much counted thread work but Sara Leigh had the knack of making all the patterns look like something I might do if I ever learned to count and managed not to sleep at night.  But the life of a small business owner is full of challenges and sometimes you just have to let go.  Still, there is hope that SL will continue to publish Jeff Kulick designs and keep us up-to-date on new designs in the counted canvaswork world.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2013/04/what-have-i-been-up-to.html

Speaking of which, I looked up Kurdy Bigg's newest piece, just to see what magic she'd come up with this time.  Here it is--
http://www.threedles.com/06012011/2013/2013Designs.html

Counted canvaswork:  I don't do it but I appreciate it greatly!  Stay tuned.  I expect Scarlet Thread has a  new incarnation for us to enjoy.

Ornament Exchange One Stop Shopping

Scarlet Thread has gathered all sorts of fun items for ornament exchanges into one place on their website for those who need supplies for a quick stitch.   I don't do counted canvaswork very often but even I am tempted by that Threedles ornament star!

More Reasons To Hate Jeff Kulick

Reason #1   Jeff is wildly talented.  He not only designs original pieces that are knockouts, he also stitches them beautifully.

Reason #2   Jeff has just released a new design, his blue ribbon winner from Woodlawn last spring, "Deconstructed Log Cabin," which is just what it sounds like--a small section of a log cabin quilt pattern (lower right corner) surrounded by expanded sections of the pattern, all in greens and creams with touches of gold.  Trust me, the photos don't do this justice.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2012/10/not-your-grandmothers-log-cabin.html

Reason #3    I don't like counted canvaswork patterns but I am dying to stitch this in pinks, corals and oranges.  Sigh.  You are a very bad man, Jeff, to tempt me so.

Counted Canvaswork Goes Wild

In today's needlepoint version of Girls Gone Wild, instead of removing our shirts, needlepointers are taking multiple Needle Delights charts and stitching them as one large piece.  The results are entrancing!
http://needledelightsoriginals.blogspot.com/2012/09/delightful-combinations.html

If you are inspired to follow their example, you can browse Kathy's website, then order from your local shop.

If you don't have a Local, then visit Scarlet Thread where Sara Leigh will beguile you with photos of thread packs, charts and great customer service.

More News from Baltimore

Scarlet Thread continues to show off the latest counted thread designs from Kathy Rees (Needle Delights) on their blog.  As is their habit, the threads for the various colorways are right there for you to drool over.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2012/09/summers-last-fling.html

Speaking of threads, The Thread Gatherer highlights their Sheep's Silk (silk-wool blend) and says they will have wool fabric dyed to match sometime this fall at their Etsy shop.  (I didn't know they had an Etsy shop either!)
http://thethreadgatherer.blogspot.com/2012/09/sheeps-silk.html

Needle Nicely sums up the Baltimore trade show with a little bit of history and a peek at some of the new times that will be in the shop shortly.

More Reports from Baltimore

Because I stitch painted canvases, not counted canvaswork, I feel I shortchange my counted friends here at Blog a little. Hope today's report of new things from Baltimore makes up for my neglect.  It's a showstopper featuring Kurdy Brigg's Threedles designs.  Please don't trample each other in the rush to buy "Christmas 2012"!
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2012/09/threedles-at-tnna-market.html

Quail Run has fallen in love with the Sew Much Fun 3-D Halloween figures.  It isn't hard to see why.
http://sonorandesertstitching.blogspot.com/2012/09/more-pictures-from-fall-market.html

Accoutrement Designs has posted a few photos of magnets they took to Baltimore.  These are things that aren't likely to be widely available, so keep your eyes open at your local shop if they went to Baltimore.
http://fobfriends.blogspot.com/2012/09/additional-new-items-some-made-debut-in.html

I expect there will be other things posted later today.  I'll update this article tonight after supper if there are. But for now, let's finish our coffee and the day will begin.

Fun in Philly (ANG Seminar) UPDATED

Melita is a stitching blogger who is already in Philadelphia, helping out at ANG's Seminar.  Follow her adventures on her blog.
http://melitastitches4fun.wordpress.com

If you belong to the ANG email list, there are photographs of ANG Seminar setup in the Yahoo Group photo albums. Later on probably these photos will be on the ANG website where everyone can see them but I don't see links there yet.
http://www.needlepoint.org/Seminar-12/index.php

I'll update this article with new information once other bloggers arrive.

UPDATE: Scarlet Thread is packing to leave.  There are new items in their store so do email the shop if things are out of stock before they return from Philly so they can re-order.

Kitting Out Michael and Carol

If you are lucky enough to have the latest Needlepoint Now magazine in your hot little hands, you've seen Michael Boran and Carol Lake's latest project.  It is called St. Margaret's Star, and Scarlet Thread has assembled thread kits of all the colourways (plus Sara Leigh's own deep purple threads) for your stitching pleasure.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2012/07/a-galaxy-of-stars-to-stitch.html

I love seeing thread piles when I have to pick colors, and I bet you'll love seeing what Michael and Carol choose plus Sara Leigh's contribution to the color sets.

Counted Delights

Scarlet Thread has posted photographs (and a teaser) of new charts they have at the shop.  The new items are from Freda's Fancy Stitching, Brenda Kocher and Nancy's Needle.  The hint is a piece of a new design from Jeff Kulick.  I can't wait to see what he has released!  I saw four new designs from him on display at Woodlawn, one of which got a blue ribbon and another of which won my I'd Take That Home If I Could award.  We'll have to wait for Sara Leigh to post more about Jeff's new chart and for me to get my act together enough to write about Woodlawn.

Once again Scarlet Thread has assembled thread kits for Threedles' Sands of Time. Here's the original, done in the Calypso colors.

Here are the Calypso threads as well as threads for the Kolam version, soft pastel greens and lilacs with mauve and blues thrown in.

If you need more eye candy, look at the thread kits for Laura Perin's Spring Long Panel at the bottom of the previous link.  The link below shows the finished Spring Long Panel.

The beautiful colors almost make me want to attempt one of these beauties. Excuse me while I go wash my mouth out with soap....

Jane, waving from CH where I have too many painted canvases lined up to start lining up charts too!

New Counted Charts and Classes

If you love counted canvaswork or geometric patterns, I've got a double treat for you this morning--a new Laura Perin cyberclass and a new Threedles design.  Let's start with Kurdy Briggs (Threedles) who has a new chart available.  The design is called Sands of Time.  You can see it on the Scarlet Thread website in three colorways.  I think the sage green one's my favorite but check all the colors.   The jeweled "Calypso" colorway shows the patterns better in my opinion.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2012/04/shifting-sands.html

Laura Perin's next cyberclass which is called Fleur-de-Lis is going to be based on irises.  You can choose either the blue or purple colorway for the class, although this will be very pretty in many colors.  After all, irises come in a multitude of color mixes!
http://two-handedstitcher.blogspot.com/2012/04/new-cyber-class.html

This class starts in early June.  Check Laura's website for more information.

Keep Calm and Smell My Feet

Pocket Full of Stitches is posting new photos of painted canvases they've received from Amanda Lawford and Renaissance Designs.  This is why I love needlepoint--check out the whimsy from Renaissance and the classic patterns from Amanda Lawford.  There really is something for every taste when it comes to needlepoint design.

If painted designs don't float your boat, check out the new counted pieces that Scarlet Thread has in their shop.  I don't know how Sara Leigh does it, but her photographs of charted models are always better than anyone else's!

SOTM Goes Halloween UPDATED

The American Needlepoint Guild's Stitch of the Month project for 2012 is a sampler in a heart shape that you fill in with stitches, one each month.
http://www.needlepoint.org/Stitch.php

You choose your colors and embark on the adventure without knowing what stitches will be used or how the overall project will look beyond the colors. But not everyone likes hearts. What to do? Folks on the ANG email list decided to draw a cat shape and fill that in, but this customization relies on some drawing skill, or the ability to find a cat outline you can trace. If you like Halloween and are wondering how to do the project in a non-romantic way, Sheena's come to the rescue.  She is doing this as a witch's hat!
http://sheenassweetstitches.com/stitch-of-the-month-turned-to-a-witchs-hat/2012/01/sample-post/

You can pick up the same threads and canvas Sheena ordered from The Scarlet Thread.  They are willing to kit this for you, even though the threads and canvas are not listed on their site yet.  UPDATE:  Here's the direct link.  Apparently they plan to send Sheena's hat outline with each order, which is a nice touch.
http://stores.intuitwebsites.com/ScarletThread/-strse-3325/Stitch-of-the-Month%2C/Detail.bok

The witch's hat outline is on Sheena's blog above. It's in the middle column about a third of the way down the page, Look for "Stitchy Files" and then click on the right PDF file to download the pattern which you then trace onto your own canvas.  Then you too can join the SOTM project with witchy fun.

Very creative, Sheena!
