Breaking News: Liz Goodrick-Dillon Has Died

A friend just posted to Instagram that Liz Goodrick-Dillon died in June.  Liz is the genius behind Tapestry Tent, which is now part of the Susan Roberts family of designs.

Her work was beautiful so I am glad Susan Roberts will continue to sell her work. I'm also glad that her daughter Ashley Dillon-Davis designs for Susan Roberts, too.  The legacy lives on.

The Firescreen--Now Appearing at Woodlawn

Tapestry Tent's Earthy Paradise, Stitched by Kate L. Callahan

Since so many of us never make it to the Woodlawn exhibit when my friend Kate Callahan mentioned she'd sent her fire screen off to the show, I begged her for photos to share.  What you see above is Tapestry Tent's "Earthy Paradise." The fire screen itself is antique and 17 inches square.  Kate changed the earthy brown tones to brighter ones to be more authentic.  I found this online photo so you can see the original colors as designed by Liz Dillon.

Comparing Kate's fire screen to the original design, you will see Kate added a crewel-type bottom to ground the vase and create a more crewel-like look.  She used brighter colors to make this piece more period, as you can see in these two photos which show a fire screen from the mid to late 1700s with the original stitching still inside.

The back of the antique fire screen (left) is much brighter than the front side (right).  By the way, Kate's version is all tent stitches, even the crewel ground under the vase.  If you click on the photos, they should enlarge enough for you to see how Kate played with the background colors to bring out the four birds in the bouquet.

Stitching Abbey's Stocking

The Faith of a Spider blog just posted progress photos of the stocking she is stitching. It is one of the elaborate Tapestry Tent designs now distributed by Susan Roberts. The details are amazing, but note how some things were omitted or changed to better suit the stitcher. You don't have to slavishly follow the painted design on your canvas if you don't want to.   That's an important lesson to learn as a stitcher--trust your own taste and style.

A New Version of Christmas Parade

Needle Nicely just posted a photo of a finished Christmas March canvas from the Ashley Dillon/Susan Roberts series of holiday parade canvases.   The interesting thing about this canvas is that the stitcher asked for help simplifying her stitch guide to her comfort level and of course Needle Nicely is known for their customer service.  It was easy for Mary Agnes to customize the guide to give the stitcher stitches she was comfortable with.  It looks great!

This just shows how much of a collaborative art needlepoint is.  In this case the designer, stitch guide writer, shop owner and stitcher all worked together to create a work of needle art that will grace the stitcher's home for many Christmases to come!

Jenny is Discouraged

Jenny Henry Designs is feeling a bit discouraged.  She designs do it yourself needlepoint kits, and thinking about doing some tablet and eReader kits when she was horrified to stumble across the pre-made ones from Lands End.  No way can she compete on price!

I followed the link to the Lands End website and discovered Christmas stockings, pillows, ornaments, belts, a wallet, and iPad/Kindle cases, all under $50 and most much cheaper than that.  The designs are attractive and the tent stitches even.  No wonder folks are shocked when they discover how much we pay for our designs and materials!  Of course they have never seen one of these next to a hand stitched and embellished Tapestry Tent stocking.  If you put them next to each other, quality shows.   Show the first and then the second link to any non-needlepointer you know and have them tell you which stocking they would prefer hanging on their chimney.

NOTHING beats the work of a skilled craftsman.  I hope you will send Jenny a little encouraging note.  At least those of us in the know understand that buying quality always pays in the end.  Those little Lands End Kindle cases will soon be dirtied and forgotten but a hand made Kindle case like the one Robin stitched above will be treasured forever.

Needlepoint is under the radar, just like the drive to make anything by hand. I believe that companies like Lands End know folks admire hand made items and are trying to turn out imitations for the unknowing.  Thank goodness we know better!

Now it is our job to show our needlepoint everywhere, to educate non-stitching folks into understanding that a $30 Christmas stocking not only is cheap to buy, it has about as much to do with real needlepoint as a postcard of painting has to do with a real Rembrandt hanging on your wall.

*Sorry I moved the Needle Bug to Atlanta!  I know better!  Montgomery is a lovely small town, the exact opposite of Atlanta, and a wonderful place to visit. My only regret is that I haven't been there since the Needle Bug moved into town.  Forgive me?

I think you'll enjoy a good long look at Jane's Twelve Days of Christmas mini socks. I am pretty sure they are from Tapestry Tent and Jane says the club was from the French Knot in Texas, so you too can stitch these if you've a mind to.  She used hers for silverware holders at dinner parties, which must have looked wonderful!  Christmas can happen any month of the year, besides....

Lewmew mentioned in the Comments section that she loves dog canvases and is looking for a blogger who talks about their dogs and dog designs both. I don't know of anyone who shows off a lot of dog canvases, but several bloggers I know have dogs and mention them occasionally, just not as often as Lewmew would like.  Sorry!  I can tell you about dog canvases and designers who have some spectacular ones, however.  If you like realistic dog canvases, Barbara Russell and Tapestry Tent are the places to start.  Here is Barbara's website.  Click on any thumbnail to see the entire canvas.

The Year of the Dragon

Chinese New Year Dragon

Today starts the New Year for the Chinese.  It is the Year of the Dragon, and apparently the water element influences the dragon zodiac in 2012.  Many folks know this already, of course, and I've had several folks ask me if I know of any new dragon designs coming out to mark the year.  I'm most familiar with the Leigh and Tapestry Tent dragon designs.  Let's start with Leigh Designs since that's first alphabetically.  Leigh has two smaller dragon canvases in her line currently.  The Chinese New Year dragon above is especially made to be used as an insert in the Lee tote bags.  It's not on the Leigh website because it is licensed to Lee/Colonial Designs.  Your shop will have to order it from Lee/Colonial for you.  I own this canvas (pictured above) and hope to have time to stitch it this year.

Studying the Eye Candy

I like to bookmark wonderful stitching for inspiration later.  I thought you'd like to see some fabulous stitching that is full of ideas if you have a similar item in your To Do pile of needlepoint canvases.  Do you have buildings or straw on a canvas?  Then you must look at Amy Bunger's Nativity stable in the June newsletter from her shop.  It is an amazing piece of work.  (The whole newsletter is fun and includes photos of many of the styles of the new Sundance sequins but not the black ones.  Trust me, the black ones are FABULOUS-O!  You know, those purple ones look pretty durn good, too....)  The newsletter also shows the brand new Fairy Tale Witch series from Melissa Shirley which Amy has promised to write stitch guides for.

Cynthia's Hair

Yesterday I received a wonderful note and two photographs from Cynthia D. who has a great tale of hair stitched--and the hope of another piece with hair in her near future.

"I am attaching a photo of the hair I did on my daughters Christmas stocking in 2004. I was in a class with Susan Portra at My Friend and Eye in Huntington Beach. We used Needlepoint Inc Silk in 4 shades. She had me scotch stitch the head first and then we layered the waves and curls over that base. And I mean we-I was too nervous at first so Susan stitched the first few waves and after practicing on a side canvas I took a deep breath and just started.

My daughter is expecting and if she has a girl I’ll be stitching Jenny by Sandra Gilmore-lots of hair to do."

We have our fingers crossed for you, Cynthia!  We love little boys as much as little girls, but oh--That would be gorgeous hair!

Yesterday was hectic again, as we cleared up the downed trees and piled up wood to be split for the winter.  Chores are never done, are they?  I was so tired that I barely managed to finish Step 2a of the iPhone case's floral background and start on Step 2b.  You can see in the photo above how adding the + sign on top of the big X adds to the design.  I've done the first column on the left and started on the second.

I've found an interesting collection of Oregon canvases at The Playful Needle.  Normally I see state canvases for places that draw a great many tourists (Florida or Cape Cod) but these are interesting and fun for anyone who has ties to the state.
