Threadaholic Alert: Four Wool Threads Compared (Plus a New Crewel Wool)

Needlepoint for Fun's latest adventure is a comparison of four new wool threads on the market.    You'll learn about Vineyards Merino, Essentials, Glisten and Planet Earth Wool, especially their characteristics and what canvas count (13 or 18) and type of stitch they work well for.
https://www.needlepoint-for-fun.com/comparison-of-three-wool-threads-for-your-needlepoint--vineyards-merino-essentials-by-tilli-tomas-and-glisten-by-rainbow-gallery.htm

As a bonus, a stitch guide is being written for the Steven Klein canvas used as a demonstration project.  Your favorite shop can order the canvas from Julie Mar and Friends, or you can ask Needlepoint for Fun for the canvas when you get their guide.

As an aside since we are talking about wool, Painter's Thread now has a crewel wool on a machine embroidery spool.  The second link below is their website with a good look at the colors available.

Coffee with Your Needlepoint

Vicky DeAngelis shows off several coffee-themed designs in her blog.  Of course not everyone drinks coffee, so I looked for teapot designs.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/do-you-know-that-today-is-national-coffee-day/

Julia Mar has a charming teapot and tea cup design.

Annie Lane makes us laugh with her Earl Gray chicken.

My Personal Favorites from Destination Dallas 2016

Cool Drink - Erin Nelson

Now that the Destination Dallas show is over and we are moving into the fall holiday season, I wanted to point out designs I really really liked. This is a personal list, just things that whisper "stitch me" when I look at them.  The first on the list is a new artist at Purple Palm Designs.  The "Cool Drink" zebra shown on the left is so appealing due to the cool colors Erin Nelson choose.
http://www.stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=34447&title=Cool%20Drink&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Pair of Quail from Quail Run Designs

How about the quails in this Quail Run design?  I just love them!
https://www.facebook.com/QuailRunNeedlework/photos/a.339586356091534.93299.326583717391798/1192581917458636/?type=3&theater

Alice Peterson Does Mahjong

I'm also crazy about the mahjong canvases from Alice Peterson.  There are three different designs.  I think the one on the right is my personal favorite.  I like the mix of red, yellow and gray, the gate and the lanterns.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1104089483000971&set=a.1093597670716819.1073741826.100001997882176&type=3&theater

Julie Mar's Peppermint Stick Mouse Sock

I have to say this peppermint stick mouse stocking from Julie Mar is the cutest thing ever!  Of course I love pink.
http://www.juliemardesigns.com/pc/KL166/NEW/White+Mouse+on+Candy+Cane

Laurel Birch Flowers

Continuing my fascination this September with floral and animal canvases are these two from Laurel Burch/Danji.
https://www.facebook.com/DanjiDesigns/photos/pcb.1073904005979351/1073903922646026/?type=3&theater

Another Laurel Burch from Painted Pony Designs

I love the simplicity of the horse and birds design.
https://www.facebook.com/DanjiDesigns/photos/pcb.1073904005979351/1073903919312693/?type=3&theater

Beauty, by Zecca

Zecca's new Beauty Bird is lovely and the saying is quite inspirational, too.
http://zecca.net/needlepoint/new-canvases/

Deco Detective, from Eleanor Grosch

Unlike any of the other pieces, my last favorite treats are not straight from nature but are people--here's Eleanor Grosch's "The Deco Detective, " straight from the Golden Age of British detective stories.
http://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/product/deco-detective/

Lani's Lady with Peonies

And here is one of Lani's new Asian ladies.  They are stunners!

Carolyn Hedge Baird says she noticed a lot of donkey canvases and lots of dogs in clothes when I asked her what trends she noticed at Destination Dallas.  What trends did you notice and what were your favorites?

http://lizartblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/bargello-techniques.html

Nimble Needle is offering a preview of what they'll be selling at Merchandise Night.  If you are at Seminar, remember to line up early as things sell out.

More ANG Seminar News UPDATED

I have a bit more news about new things you'll see if you are going to ANG's Seminar in Philadelpha later this week. Terry Dryden's newest classes will be on display at the exhibit in the 2013 class model section.  ANG always shows off the classes for the next seminar at the current seminar.  It's a perk for attendees to see the new classes models in person.
http://www.terrydryden.com/-blog/2012/8/20/new-designs-on-display-in-philadelphia.html

If you are able to go to Merchandise Night, on 8/30, you can pick up some silk wrapped pearl purl from Nimble Needle's booth (which will have trunk shows there from Leigh, SharonG--who will be there in person--and Julie Mar and Friends).  Give Karen and SharonG hugs from me, ok?
http://thenimbleneedle.blogspot.com/2012/08/silk-wrapped-pearl-purl.html

I don't know for sure that Orna Willis will be at Merchandise Night, but she usually is.  She'll have wonderful things like these kits that come with a design in many many color selections.  I have to admit Orna's pieces look too loud in the photos for my style but wait'll you see them in person!  They are a totally different thing when you actually see them.  She's a genius with color!
http://ornadesign.blogspot.com/2012/08/new-kit-just-like-cotton-candy.html

On a slightly different topic, Celebration of Needlework will have a show at St. Charles in Missouri at the end of September.  Here are some details but the second link has much more.  This is a counted thread show mostly, so I hope you are able to go to broaden the things you offer in your shop.

River Silks

The River Silks blog likes to show off stitching using their lovely silk ribbons. I have just as much fun looking at them since I really like their ribbons which come in lovely colors and are durable and easy to stitch with.  Recently I discovered a dyelot difference between two cards of the same color but my original card was quite old and might have faded since it was stored in a sunny room.  Since I was doing leaves, two slightly different shades of green didn't matter to me.  Just be warned if color changes matter--Get enough ribbon for your project since the River Silks 4mm ribbon I like to use on 18 count only has five yards on each card and that runs out fast when you are creating flowers.

Back to the eye candy--aren't these Shivering Sheep grasshoppers darling?

How about these florals from Julie Mar and Friends?

Hari-Kuyo, The Festival of Broken Needles

Julie Mar's Jade Pond
Got your old needles ready? I've wrapped mine in pretty paper tied with a beautiful bow. Now let's assemble around the Jade Pond.  One at a time each of us will walk across the bridge, stop in the middle, and toss our little packets of needles into the pond, giving thanks for their faithful service as we stitched and stitched and stitched with them.

Now that all our needles from last year have magically vanished into the pond's blue waters, let's settle down on benches around the other side of the pond and drink our tea and coffee together, planning our stitching with brand new needles and lovely threads next year.  Happy Hari-kuyo!

If you would like to add the lovely little garden above to your stash, here's a link.

Monthly Club News

With January approaching, shops that start their monthly clubs the first month of the year are announcing their new design series.

Needlenook of La Jolla has Twinkle Toes, A Collection of Designs stockings with guides from Julia Snyder.  To me they look like jeweled mini stockings that will be great on a Christmas tree or hung in a row on your fireplace mantel.  I'm not sure about the size, however.  These are not shown on the ACOD website (second link), but you might find a single stocking there that charms you if you don't want to commit to a whole year of socks.
http://www.needlenookoflajolla.com/events/cod/index.html

http://www.acollectionofdesigns.com/

The Needlepointer has announced that their 2011 monthly clubs will be Ribbon Candy (designer unspecified but I think these canvases are by Melissa Shirley), Thanksgiving letters featuring gourds, pumpkins and squashes (Melissa Shirley) and Peppermint Patty, a series of eight two sided candies (designer unknown).  Sadly, there's nothing on their website yet about the new clubs or their current trunk show by Raymond Crawford, but The Needlepointer promises great prices for Raymond's delights and I'm sure things will go up on their website soon.
http://www.theneedlepointer.com/monthly_clubs.php

Little Shoppe of Stitches has some wonderful clubs, including the Christmas wreath club, their 3-D cupcakes and of course the Twelve Days of Christmas pear ornaments which are also 3-D.  These are ready for any one who doesn't have clubs available in their local shop or who, like me, has a "local" shop that is too far to visit all that often.
http://store.littleshoppeofstitches.com/onlinekits.html

In Do It Yourself club news, if you want something very different for a personal club (or your shop is looking for recommendations), why not check out the landscape club from Julie Mar Designs?  She does wonderful vingettes of the Great Smoky Mountains and of the beach, too.  After all, her home of North Carolina has both mountains and ocean views.
http://www.juliemardesigns.com/c/LANDSCAPECLUB/Landscape+Club.html

And finally, don't forget to browse all the Petei Santa kits available from The French Knot in Texas.  If this doesn't put you in a Christmas mood, nothing will!

New Things On the Way

TNNA's trade show in Columbus, Ohio starts next week, so folks are beginning to post messages about the new things that will be available for shops to purchase then.  Here is the class Barbara Bergsten will be teaching at the trade show.  Barbara is a master at choosing stitching "sisters" so that the different parts of her designs are stitched differently but harmoniously.  By the way, if you click on the "New, New, New!" title above this article, you'll go to links showing Barbara's catalogue of designs and her stitch guides.  She's unique in that each canvas she designs comes with a free stitch guide that you download from her website if you want to use it.  It's a great way of distributing guides to students who have computer access.
http://createneedlepoint.typepad.com/create_needlepoint/2010/06/needlepoint-class.html

Are you a fan of Mindy's painted canvases like me?  Check these new designs out!
http://pocketfullofstitches.blogspot.com/2010/06/new-pieces-from-mindy.html

How about Julie Mar?  Do you love her designs from nature?  This shop has new designs in stock.
http://bristlythistle.wordpress.com/2010/06/05/new-julie-mar-needlepoint-at-the-bristly-thistle/

Janet Perry has written a summary of new products she's heard about on her blog.
http://www.nuts-about-needlepoint.com/new-in-needlepoint-june-2010

Ruth Schmuff has a stitched sample of one of her new canvases on her blog.  I used it to illustrate this article.  Isn't the Queen a scream?!
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2010/05/queen-speaks.html

Finally, I have three thread reviews I thought you'd like to see, even if these threads aren't brand new on the market.  They still may be new to stitchers and shops who haven't stocked them yet.  Robin King shows off an original project she designed for a charity auction and explains how she used DMC's memory thread on it.
http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com/2010/06/m-and-dmc-memory-thread.html

Want to try something not widely available here in the United States?  Stef Francis' Silk Impressions is a lovely thread.  If you want to buy some, there are links in the review to a shop in Massachusetts that sells it.
http://bargelloneedlepoint.com/thread-spotlight-silk-impressions-by-steph-francis/

Were you curious about the Silk Lame Braid I used on the little mermaid?  Here's a brief review.
http://bristlythistle.wordpress.com/2010/05/30/new-needlepoint-thread-silk-lame/

Everyone who is going to the TNNA show, travel safe and have fun. Come home with great things for your shops for us, ok?

Landscapes

Right now the landscape in Chilly Hollow is lush and green after a record-breaking year of rain- and snowfall.  If you are tempted to stitch something like the above (which is the edge of the my woods with wild raspberries and self-seeded foxgloves), you need to visit the Julie Mar trunk show at Nimble Needle.  Julie works in Asheville, NC which is at the other end of the Blue Ridge Mountains from Chilly Hollow.  Many of her landscapes are of similar scenes.  Of course she does beaches, too!
http://thenimbleneedle.blogspot.com/

Julie's website is at this second link, just in case you can't get enough of her signature Appalachian mountain landscapes (although she does terrific small florals and great little bracelet cuffs).
http://www.juliemardesigns.com/

By the way, the same shop blog is showcasing a great many wooden boxes with needlework inserts.  It's a good place to view the large variety of sizes, woods, and prices for such items.
