Threadaholic Alert: A Comparison of Crewel Wools WITH MORE

Mary Corbet has started a series about crewel-weight embroidery wool.  She's starting out by comparing what Appleton crewel, Fine d'Aubusson wool, Heathway, and DMC's Eco Vita are like when just cut from their skeins.  You'll see how thick they are, learn the number of colors and shades available from each brand, and compare prices for each.

Here's how each of the four stitch up.  Remember, the examples are done on cross stitch fabric, so what you get on needlepoint canvas will be a bit different.

Next, Mary uses her four wools in long and short and satin stitch so you can see how they look when stitched in these filling stitches.

Mary is continuing her exploration of crewel wools with five more:  Bella Lusso (Fleur de Paris), Simply Wool (Gentle Arts), La Nollin (formerly Renaissance Dyeing), Overdyed Italian Wool (ThreadworX's overdyed Bella Lusso), and Array Wool (Zollie). Hang on!  It's going to be fun!

The next crewel weight wool Mary is exploring in depth is Array Wool from Zollie.  It's originally intended for weavers.

Mary continues to look at Array Wool, Bello Lusso, ThreadworX, Renaissance Dyeing, and Simply Wool brands of crewel wools.

Next up, Mary introduces a lovely crewel wool from Australia's Gumnut Yarns.  I've been lucky enough to buy some of this and it's got lovely, lovely colors.

By the way, Mary's creating an article index so you can find all the crewel wool articles easier.

Getting to Know ThreadworX

Melissa of the Pointing It Out podcast interviews Tony Carter of ThreadworX.  It's interesting to hear how this business got started, the threads they offer and their plans.

If you aren't a threadaholic you may not have heard of ThreadworX.  Browse all the goodies here.

Here are the colors in Bradley's Balloons.  This example happens to be perle cotton but it's available in floss, Vineyard Silk, Au Ver A Soie, Bella Lusso and Kreinik.

Our Heros!

Orna Willis ran into the bane of teachers this week—supplies for her kits were lost in the mail! But the folks at Access Commodities, Caron, Edmar, Rainbow Gallery, ThreadworX and Wilchelt all came through by rushing replacements to her so her class would have what they needed.  You guys are The Best!  💙💚💛💜🖤

Threadaholic Alert: Mary's Favorite Threads Video

If you love threads, you'll want to watch the latest video by FiberTalk.  Yes, I know FiberTalk normally does podcasts, but this week they interviewed Mary McGuire on camera to learn about her favorite threads.  You will see Mary's projects and hear her explain what thread was used where. Very interesting!

By the way, I'm guessing that these are the Wubbers flat-nosed pliers Mary mentions at the end of the video.

Overdyed Kreinik Size 16 Braid Now Available

I have great news for fans of overdyed Kreinik!  Colour Complements is now dyeing size 16 braid in some of their fun color combinations.
http://colourcomplements.com/2016/05/kreinik-16-braid.html

ThreadworX has been the supplier for sizes 4, 8 and 12 overdyed Kreinik here in the United States, but if you want size 16 braid, Lorraine of Colour Complements is the place.   Since this is brand new, Lorraine's Etsy shop only has a multicolor pack available, but I think if you ask her nicely and be a little patient, you can arrange to have the color you want made just for you.

What I Actually Prefer to Beads and Sequins

Nimble Needle is a big fan of metallic threads.  How do I know?  I read this--
http://thenimbleneedle.blogspot.com/2012/06/sparkle-delight.html

Following in the steps of Needle Necessities, ThreadworX dyes Kreinik metallic in sizes 4, 8 and 12 to create some beautiful colors.  Here is their #8 size page, but the colors are available in almost all sizes.  This thread is just like Kreinik metallics to work with, only the colors are different.
http://threadworx.com/product.php?catid=8&catName=Hand%20Overdyed%20Metallic%20#8%20braid%20-%2010%20yards&pg_num=1

Caron's Snow is a synthetic metallic thread that is a little stretchy.  I find one strand perfect for 18 count.  The colors are lovely and the threads easy to use.  Melissa Shirley is using yellow to stitch a wonderful design.  (See her Facebook "Melissa Shirley Designs" account photo albums.)
http://www.caron-net.com/tN6color.html

These are not the only metallics available now--in fact the variety is staggering--but Snow and over dyed Kreinik are wonderful threads on the right canvas.

However, if you are a sequin and bead kind of person, Vicky's got lots of photos of the newest from The Collection.  There's even Wonder Ribbon, which I've been wondering about.

Rumor Mill: ANG SOTM Thread Shortage

According to Needle in a Haystack, ThreadworX's overdyed floss #1089, which is used in the ANG Stitch of the Month program for 2012, is going to be hard to get for the next month.  You might want to check around and see if another shop has it if you are certain you want to use the model colors from the ANG website.

Thread Candy Studio Book Three is Out

ThreadworX has announced that book three of their Thread Candy Studio series is out. I've not seen any of the series yet, so I can't comment fully except to say that it is neat to know that they are going to be profiling Pocket Full of Stitches' Christmas tag club.

ThreadworX Publishes

ThreadworX has just announced the publication of two little Thread Candy Studio books for your stitching pleasure.  One is a journal for listing your projects, threads, stitch guides, etc.  It is small and portable, great for dropping in your purse before you had to the shops for some Stash Enhancement Experience.  Think of it as a cross between a memory book and an inventory.
http://www.threadworx.typepad.com/the-needleworx-journal/2011/11/new-products-great-gifts.html

The second book seems to be geared towards needlepointers who are just sticking their toe into the deep and exciting waters of painted canvas embellishment.  It diagrams the basic fancy stitches that we use over and over again, and includes a few tips for the less experienced stitcher.  You can read more about both books and see a sample page at this link.
http://www.threadcandystudio.com/product_2.html

Actually, the pair might be the perfect stocking stuffer for that friend or relative you are teaching to needlepoint.

Ladies of the Night

Luna:  Lady of the Night Unfinished
As a special Halloween celebration, I have some of the wonderful Leigh Designs' Ladies of the Night series, all stitched up and ready to inspire us all with ideas for our own Halloween canvases. First of all, I've linked to the unstitched canvases so you can see them all. Leigh always designs a series of eight canvases, which gives plenty of options to choose from.  I'm working on Luna, even though she's been put away for almost a year when family crises got in the way.  I'll be working on her this fall after Christmas stitching is done.  (Note to self:  Stitch FASTER!)
http://www.leighdesigns.com/Grp513x.html

The first finished canvas is of Esme, who wears a beaded gown (Luna's gown is only beaded at the bottom) and has the most marvelous pillar and candle--that candle wax is inspired!  Esme's got smashing jewelry and gorgeous hair.  I suspect if we could see this in person the red curtains in the background would also be beautiful.  The photo isn't quite clear enough for me.  Leona Cole of The Stitch Niche in Mississippi is the stitcher of this masterpiece.  Think she'd let me borrow this for a while to study?  I'll give it back.  Eventually.  Really I will.
http://www.LeighDesigns.com/Mdl5132.html

Daria is the next finished piece.  (I'm listing them in the order they appear on the Leigh website to make you finding a photo of the unstitched canvas a bit easier.)  This has always been a favorite canvas.  I just love the black cat!  Daria wears a gorgeous patterned gown and has the best manicure of the bunch.  I particularly like the couched metallic spiral on the broken pillar and the velvety look of the cat with the jewel eyes.  Daria's ring is simple and I think that enhances the overall look of this piece since it doesn't detract from the cat's eye or the fabulous beaded girdle she wears.  Take a careful look at the background of this piece.  The zigzag pattern is both quiet and dynamic, a wonderful combination!  Sally London of Rainbow Gallery is the creative mind behind this great canvas.
http://www.LeighDesigns.com/Mdl5134.html

Our final vamp vampire is Beth Hendzilik's Remilia.  I was thrilled to see this photograph as the gauzy curtains on either side of the canvas were not shown in earlier versions I've seen.  The curtain tie backs are inspired, as is the little spider hiding in the curtain folds!  That spider was obviously inspired by the web that you can just see glistening on the right side or Remilia.  She wears the most marvelous Russian shawl, which I am told was inspired by the ones the designer SharonG takes to the trade shows.  Wish I could see that shawl better. Maybe I have to borrow this design, too?  Heck, I'll just need all three, please!
http://www.LeighDesigns.com/Mdl5137.html

I think the background is unstitched here.  The hair is just fabulous and the sleeves are fascinating.  My Luna's sleeves are unstitched so I find these particularly interesting in that they are done with such a light touch they are gray, not black like her sisters' outfits.

Beth works for ThreadworX and created a stitch guide for her version which comes with the thread kit from ThreadworX so you have everything you need.  Add canvas and you'll have a Lady of the Night to haunt our dreams as well.
http://www.threadworx.com/productDetails.php?prd_id=1087

It is great fun to study all three ladies and see how the similar elements of black dress with tattered sleeves, the flowing hair and the backgrounds are handled.  Each stitcher has put her unique stamp on the designs with the elements that are different--the spider web, the cat on the pillar and the candle in its skull holder.  Needlepoint is really art in the hands of these master stitchers.

Happy Halloween!

Thread Candy Studio on the Way

ThreadworX has just announced their new Thread Candy Studio. I have been trading emails with ThreadworX’s Beth  Hendzlik, asking about the new project and what it means for us stitchers. Here’s the information to date on their website. Be sure to click on the More Details tab in the header line to see more.
http://www.threadcandystudio.com/p/thread-candy-studio-sweet-retreat-you.html

What is Thread Candy Studio? Is it a magazine? (No, it is an ongoing book series. It comes out 6 times a year starting this June with more issues in the spring and around Christmas than during the summer to match when stitchers are most active.)  Beth says, “There may be two closer together at holiday season and a little farther apart in the spring, even though there will still be a specific amount within the year.”

Is it a website? Well, not yet, but there will be a full Thread Candy Studio website eventually. Bookmark the above to keep an eye on what develops.

Is it a stitch guide? Well, there often is a stitch guide or stitch diagrams included but that’s not all that it is. Thread Candy Studio’s actually a series of soft cover books targeted to consumers, but created with shops in mind too, so, they may use the books for customer projects. There’s no advertising in the books (unlike news stand magazines like Vogue which are full of ads), so the subscription pricing has to cover all the publishing costs.

Each book has things like patterns, stitch diagrams, ideas, tutorials and projects (both finishing and embellishing). There aren’t articles reporting on this or that, however. In other words, it doesn’t cover the NP world the way the magazines (or Blog) does. Also, it isn’t as closely targeted at needlepointers as ThreadworX’s previous publication
Journal was. Thread Candy Studio wants to appeal to all sorts of stitchers, so the Thread Candy Studio books will have more than just needlepoint designs in them (like a presentation or finishing project to go with one of the stitched designs in the book)

Beth explained, “The book is geared to the consumer. It is very different than what is out there. It is a stitch diagram book, pattern book, idea book, project book combined. Imagine what would be spent if all the items were purchased individually. Our goal for Thread Candy Studio is to combine all sorts of information and product in full color to offer it at an economical price. It is also our goal to offer lots of info for new stitchers for all ages, people who do not have time to go to classes or a shop near them. We will have contributors from shops, teachers and designers. We've had lots of help and input and are so excited to offer this tool, especially since each book/issue will grow with the needs of the readers. We are going to stay very in tune to them".

Price:
$19.95 a book - regular binding*
$120.00 for a six book subscription to the ongoing series, plus an additional issue free - regular binding*

*Additional 5.00 to add spiral binding.

It sounds as if this is something stitchers will want to ask their shops to keep an eye on. I know from my interviews and private conversations with shop owners how much they want to offer programs to their customers to get them interested in stitching and keep them interested, so I hope this turns out to be a relatively inexpensive way for them to do so.  Once shop owners get the first issue and start using it, I hope some of them will review Thread Candy Studio on their websites.

Jessica and the Spanish Olives

Robin gives us a lesson on making perfect Jessicas on the Needlepoint Study Hall blog using a thread I've heard quite a few folks rave about--ThreadworX's Spanish Olives.  A lot of fabulous stitchers are using this color in a variety of types of overdyed threads (perle cotton, floss, metallic and even wool).  The second link shows you the color, although I think in real life it is a more complex mix of olive green shading into medium green.  Alas, I have none to compare to the photo so I can't be sure.  [Jane adds Spanish Olives to the shopping list for her yearly trip to the shops.]

More Thread Reviews

Since I've been talking about threads myself a lot lately, I thought I'd turn over the topic to Janet Perry who has several thread reviews on her website that you might be interested in.  The first article talks about the new Candy colors from Kreinik.
http://www.nuts-about-needlepoint.com/candy-metallics-from-kreinik-thread-review

Dinky-Dyes has new colors for their silk threads and ribbons.  Because Dinky-Dyes is an Australian company and their threads perhaps not available in your local shop, the second link is to their website to do a little exploring.
http://www.nuts-about-needlepoint.com/new-dinky-dyes-colors

http://www.dinkydyes.iinet.net.au/

Janet's final article is about ThreadworX threads and talks about their colorfastness and proper care if you plan to wash them or get your finished piece damp in blocking.

Stitch Guides, Classes and Other Fun Things UPDATED

Those of you who think of stitch guides as just about one canvas may find Ridgewood's mention of the Brenda Hart Banner Book (which discusses stitching Rebecca Wood's series of seasonal banners) enlightening.  I may be slightly prejudiced since I write stitch guides, but I think of them as inspirational reading, not just a road map for a certain canvas.
http://ridgewoodneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2011/02/banner-year.html

Rittenhouse Needlepoint has posted a profile of their in-house custom canvas painter.  Many designers start out painting other folks' designs, then graduate to going out on their own but a significant minority of painted canvas designers started with custom work, catering to the customer's design to memorialize something special to them.  Jim is going this route and the photographs of his work are something special.  I particularly love his Scarlet Letter pillow but there is lots to admire here.  Kudos to Rittenhouse for showcasing his skills!  I can't wait to see what he does next.
http://rittenhouseneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2011/02/custom-painting.html

Laura Perin's first cyberclass is over and she is starting to post photographs of her students' finished pieces.  As always, the various colors they chose make each piece totally unique.  One of the greatest charms of counted canvaswork is picking your own colors to create something that is totally unique.  It's not a custom painted design like the ones Jim does for Rittenhouse, but it's the next best thing as the stitcher is the color artist.
http://two-handedstitcher.blogspot.com/2011/02/photo-finishes.html

UPDATE:  Laura has just announced her second cyberclass, Lilac Time.  Here are the details.
http://two-handedstitcher.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-next-cyber-class.html

Speaking of new blogs as I did yesterday, Beth at ThreadworX has started one, too.  She is heavily involved in ThreadworX's stitching publications and writes lovely stitch guides, so I have high hopes that Peppermint Street will be a fun place for stitchers to visit.
http://www.peppermintstreet.com/

My final treat for you this morning is a close up of Carole Lake's St. Basil's Cathedral.  Any of you who were at the 2001 ANG Seminar saw the original model on display.
http://www.needlepoint.org/WhatIs/2001/stbasils.php

Carole occasionally teaches this piece, much to the delight of lucky stitchers everywhere.  Ridgewood Needlepoint has the class scheduled and have received the class materials and the model recently.  They couldn't resist taking some close up photos to showcase this wonderful piece.  Note that there are a few differences between the 2001 model and the class model.  Carole restitched this as the original design and some of the threads are no longer available.
http://ridgewoodneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2011/02/st-basils-cathedral.html

By the way, there are two openings left in this class so if you live close to Ridgewood, NJ, act quickly!
