Free from the DMC Pattern Archives

DMC has been around for hundreds of years at this point. They have a free chart section on their website that releases old patterns periodically, so you can stitch all sorts of interesting patterns from the past.  The downloads are free but for a few dollars you can order a kit with the threads used.
https://www.dmc.com/us/patterns-5041,collection-the-archive-collection-455/?utm_source=Commonthread+Masterlist&utm_campaign=132680aadc-EMAIL_US-1k-Archive-Collection_2018_07_29&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3a652561da-132680aadc-82831385&mc_cid=132680aadc&mc_eid=f7c1b12c64

I think most of the designs were intended for cross stitch but many appear to be full cross stitches so they can easily be done on needlepoint canvas.

The Needle Park Avenue

Those of us working a piece with a lot of color changes have to figure out how to organize our threads so that we don't spend more time threading up and putting away than stitching.  The Needle Park Avenue is a good way to keep your needles with all those colors organized and handy.  Here's a bit about how it works.

These can be purchased from Margaret Lee's Etsy page.

SJ Designs Introduces "Heirloom Lace Sampler"

Needlepointers who like samplers will be thrilled with the new chart by Susan Johnson of SJ Designs—"Heirloom Lace Sampler."
https://www.facebook.com/100217680025450/photos/a.100768283303723.283.100217680025450/1754462507934284/?type=3&theater

Susan says this is stitched on 18 count needlepoint canvas using two layers of simple stitches to give the illusion of lace over velvet.  You can pick up the chart at the SJ Designs website.

More Genius at Work

This morning I have a video that Kreinik posted on their Facebook page with a genius idea for the rug under a Christmas tree.
https://www.facebook.com/Kreinik.Manufacturing.Company/videos/10155135174300940/

Sally Baer of BB Needlepoint came up with the rug idea.  It's chain stitch with a loop edge that was cut, all in Kreinik.

A Celebration of Flowers Exhibit

A museum in Bath has an exhibit of Kaffe Fassett quilts and needlepoint and Candace Bahouth mosaic work.  The latest Kaffe newsletter has a link to a video of the show.  There are lots and lots of quilts but the floral needlepoint is amazing, too.  The exhibit ends in September if you happen to be in England then.

The Thread Finder is Live

Bedecked and Beadazzled has a new online tool called the Thread Finder.
https://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/2018/08/welcome-to-our-new-thread-finder/?mc_cid=2bae4f0efc&mc_eid=c05eb4bd3b

Basically you go to the Thread Finder starting page (link below) and answer a few questions.  Then you will get some suggestions of threads to try.   The suggestions tell you how many strands (or plies from a strand) to use on the size canvas you have indicated and there are links to online shopping for each brand recommended.  Note that not all the threads are up on the website yet, so some of the links don't work.  But this is a new feature and a work in progress.
https://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/thread-finder/

It's a fun way to come up with new ideas for threads you never considered—or that your local shop doesn't carry.  Kudos to Ruth Schmuff for making thread shopping more fun than ever.

Breaking News: The Founder of Sasi Creations Has Died

Judi announced on Needlepoint Nation that Susan Ives, the artist behind Sasi Creations, has died in Florida.  Judi shared information from Susan's daughter below. Thanks for letting us know, Judi.  For those who are not familiar with Sasi, here are a few of her canvases.
http://www.knit1needlepoint2.com/shop/Needlepoint-Canvas/Needlepoint-Canvas-by-Designer/SASI-CREATIONS.htm

"Susan “Sasi” Ives passed away peacefully on August 15, 2018 in Boca Raton, Florida. Susan was born to Jack and Eleanor Seigel in New York on November 4, 1942. Born an artist, she expressed her creativity through her vivid paintings, sketches and words from a very young age. In 1958, Susan went to Camp Sequoia as a 15 yr old camper and met Mark, the love of her life. They wed in 1962 and were lovingly married for 56 years. Susan brought up her children Lori and Shari with Mark on Long Island before recently moving to Boca Raton, FL. Susan Adele Seigel Ives “SASI”, founded her company Sasi Creations Inc. early in her life and has spread her art nationwide through her needlework company and her passion for painting. She shared her talent and whimsy with almost every waiter, waitress, receptionist, and person who was blessed to get a Sasi original sketch while they worked with her. Susan also had a talent for bringing friends and family together and was greatly loved! Susan will be remembered by those that knew her as a fabulous artist, a quiet poet, and a master game player. Susan “Sasi” is survived by her husband Mark, her children Lori and Shari, her sister Bonnie, her grandchildren Jack and Danielle, and a large loving extended family. Services to be held at The Gardens at Boca Raton, 4103 N. Military Trail, Boca Raton, Florida 33431 on August 20 at 11:30 pm. Donations can be made in Susan’s memory to Wind River Cancer Retreats either online at https://donorbox.org/susan-sasi-ives or checks can be mailed to 430 Larsen Lane, Tryon, NC 28782.

Mark will be receiving family and friends at his home on Sunday August 19 from 3pm – 8pm as well as after the service on Monday August 20 from 3pm – 8pm. Address: 21692 Palm Circle, Boca Raton, FL 33433 (Boca Lago Community)

For those that cannot attend in person, the Memorial Service will be Livestreamed on Monday the 20th at 12:00pm. To obtain a link, email shiftnc@gmail.com to ask for the link and the viewing instructions."

Raymond Crawford in Cross Stitch

The Needlework Retailer just announced two of Raymond Crawford's needlepoint designs are going to be available as cross stitch.
http://yarntree.typepad.com/needlework_news/2018/07/here-for-the-boos.html

It will be interesting to see if this becomes a trend, although I think anyone who has seen what Pat Miller did with the needlepoint canvas version will find the XS version way too plain.
http://needleartnut.blogspot.com/2018/02/finished.html

Of course not everyone likes embellishment….

What do you think?  Are you buying the canvas and Pat's stitch guide or are you a cross stitcher?

Carol Martine, Artist in Dimensional Needlepoint UPDATED

Carol Martine has decided to do more dimensional needlepoint. Her blog shows off three pieces she's already finished. Now I cannot wait to see what she is working on now!
https://carolmartinedotcom.wordpress.com/2018/06/13/original-expressive-needlepoint-things-past/

Here is what Carol is starting.  What do you think?
https://carolmartinedotcom.wordpress.com/2018/06/14/new-plunge-into-original-needlepoint-piece-june-2018/

She's trying to pick her focal point and establish a good layout.  Note that she has labeled some areas of the design to remind herself of the dimensional effect she wants.
https://carolmartinedotcom.wordpress.com/2018/06/18/the-evolution-of-the-needlepoint-piece/

Carol stenciled the background pattern around the border, using various colors but making sure each color was used in three locations.  I thought that interesting.
https://carolmartinedotcom.wordpress.com/2018/06/21/the-evolution-of-the-needlepoint-piece-some-more-steps/

Carol has started with the padding for leaves on her background border once she traced the stems and leaves onto the border.
https://carolmartinedotcom.wordpress.com/2018/06/27/evolution-of-the-needlepoint-continues/

Now the stenciled background has been stitched and some of the leaves are in.
https://carolmartinedotcom.wordpress.com/2018/07/01/the-needlepoint-evolution-closing-in-on-the-end-of-the-background-layer/

Carol's having way too much fun with silk ribbon!
https://carolmartinedotcom.wordpress.com/2018/07/15/the-needlepoint-evolution-continuing-step-by-step/

Now that Carol's thinking about the center of her design, she'll pulling supplies as a way to help focus her ideas.

Hearts for Hospice UPDATED

The Kansas City ANG chapter has a philanthropic project called Hearts for Hospice and are looking for stitchers to help.   This is how it works—

"The members of Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild initiated a project in 2015 to fulfill a need at a local hospice center. When a resident passes away, a heart is placed on the door which notifies those passing by to be respectful of others who are mourning the death of a loved one. The heart is then taken home by a family member as a remembrance of the care their loved one received while at the center."

Finishing is provided by the local chapter.   If you are interested, here's how you can contribute. If you have further questions, email Sue at heartsforhospicegkcng@gmail.com

Update:  Anne of ABS Designs has stitched for the group.  Here is Anne's first heart and it's a beauty.

The Fourth Queen UPDATED

Gay Ann Rogers' next sale is today! And it's going to include The Fourth Queen.
http://www.gayannrogers.com

The fourth queen, you say?  Gay Ann has created portraits of three queens so far.  That's Elizabeth I on the left, Catherine the Great in the middle, and Eleanor of Aquitaine on the right.
https://www.facebook.com/860462527326471/photos/a.860475930658464.1073741827.860462527326471/1815049158534465/?type=3&theater

These are all sold as kits with the canvas, beads and threads, so they are rather pricey and Gay Ann is not planning to sell any of these Queens ever again.  Gay Ann says the sale will end August 24 or when she runs out of kits.  So if you are a fan, don't tarry.

By the way, Fiber Talk will interview Gay Ann Rogers on Sunday, August 12 about the Last Queen (who is Queen Victoria) and more.
http://wetalkfiber.com/2018/08/12/fiber-talk-with-gay-ann-rogers-ii/

UPDATE:  Shining Needle Society is going to do a stitch-along with Gay Ann for those who buy the Fourth Queen kit.  Details will be in the kit if you purchase one.

Horse County Chic was at Chuck Pinnell's store recently and shows off photos of the purses and belts he makes.  I didn't realize his purses had bumper feet to protect them and I've never seen the rolled leather edge he gave to one of his belts.  Check out the oval needlepoint inserts on other belts.  That's also new to me.  This is the best belt and purse maker around!

If you want to see more, browse the Pinnell Custom Leather website.  You'll pay a lot for these but they will last and last and are beautiful to boot.

BREAKING NEWS: Fireside Stitching is Moving

Fireside Stitching is moving!  Betsy posted this to Facebook's Needlepoint Nation today.

"After almost 20 years at our current location, Fireside Stitchery is moving our shop a little east to 179 Lancaster Avenue, Malvern, PA 19355. The shopping center where we were located is going up for Sheriff's sale, so we are being pro-active, and moving in case they decide to come in with a wrecking ball. The shop will be closed 8/2/2018 through 8/14/2018*. We are still accepting on-line orders. For those of you who come to visit the Philadelphia area, be sure to check our new home. We are only moving about a mile and 1/2 half. My commute has now gone from 3 minutes to 5 minutes. The store is a little larger than the current location, more threads??? Verizon has been playing roulette with our phone system, so if you are trying to call us, please be patient.  For all of my Saturday morning ladies, I will not know what to do with myself tomorrow morning, no class. I will see you in our new location next Saturday.  I look forward to seeing everyone in our new shop."

In case you don't have Fireside's website bookmarked, here is the URL.

*Fireside has updated the days they will be closed but you can call in orders starting August 7.  The shop reopens at the new location on August 15.

Jan's Metalforms Journey

Jan at the Stitchlady's Adventures blog has been working the Jeff Kulick project from Needle Pointers magazine called "Metalforms" with a group from her local ANG chapter.  Jan is using her own colors, which makes this project especially interesting.
