Breaking News: Scam Website

Zecca just posted this to Facebook's Needlepoint Nation:

"I just became aware of a scam website I think everyone should be aware of. It pretends to be an online seller of needlepoint with too good to be true prices. It is not real!!!!!! needleworkart.com
Do not give them any information. It is not a real shop."

I suggest folks not even click on the link.  Even looking at websites like this can be dangerous.  Thanks for the heads up, Zecca!

Threadaholic Alert: Bisous

Tilli Thomas' newest thread--a silk/wool blend called Bisous--is appearing in the shops.

This Planet Earth thread is a thin, single strand of half Merino wool, half silk.  KC Needlepoint says it is thinner than Essentials.  It comes in 30 yard skeins and Planet Earth describes it as "suitable for 18 and 16 mesh."  Rittenhouse recommends 2 strands on 18 count and 3 on 13 count for full coverage.

You can see photos of the colors at this link.

Ridgewood Explores Brick Stitch for New Stitch Monday

Ridgewood Needlepoint is exploring brick stitch as part of their New Stitch Monday series.

Now Ridgewood looks at fancier variations on brick stitch.

Instructions for brick stitch beading are included.  Be warned, though.  Depending on the size of your canvas and beads, the beading thread and the underlying canvas may show.  That can provide some interesting shading effects or contrasts if you experiment with colors a bit.

Brick stitch is quite versatile.  You can add a bead to the stitch after your needle comes up from the back and it will settle in the middle hole.  You can work brick stitch in vertical columns, which is particularly useful if you are doing the stitch on black or dark navy where it is hard to see where to put your needle.  You can also work brick stitch over threads laid in the ditch between threads which gives a fun effect if you use two colors or add a metallic as the laid thread.

The Cure for Wonky Frames

Needle Point Breeze just posted a photo of the colorful FrameLok tools.

What is a FrameLok?  It's a set of four gadgets you insert in the inside corners of those old stretcher bars you've had for eons that aren't tight any more.  Just add thumb tacks and the stretcher bars are no longer wonky, but stay straight.

This video demonstrates the process.  Note that these are regular sized stretcher bars, not the minis.  I suspect they'll hang over the side a bit if you are using mini stretcher bars but I think they'll still work.

They come four to a package and you'll need thumbtacks to secure them.  You can read the heartwarming story of how they were invented here.

Here are shops that carry FrameLoks if your favorite store doesn't.

Stitching a House?

Stitching a house?   M's Canvashouse has some darling brass embellishments for doors.  It's hard to tell from the photo but I think most can be sewn on.

Dots Upon Dots: Winter 2025 Mystery

Ruth Schmuff has announced her Winter 2025 Mystery class--Barbara Basso's "Dots Upon Dots." It 's whimsical and fun and as always, it'll be interesting to see what Ruth does with this design.  I don't usually post about upcoming classes but Ruth shows off her progress photos, making this something you'll want to keep an eye on.  You'll get plenty of good ideas for your canvases, especially if they have polka dots, cats or elegant ladies.

End of the Year for NJNA

By the time this publishes it'll be 2026, but the New Jersey Needle Artists Chapter of ANG newsletters are timeless!

As usual there is lots of ANG news, plus they let us know about a new, light weight needlework stand called Miraneks.  It looks like it was meant for cross stitch and won't hold a big project or maybe even Evertites, but it looks very good for travel.

By the way, if you are interested in highlighter tape, shop around.  It's available a lot of places but the prices vary wildly.

Threadaholic Alert: Pirate + Robin Overdyed Floss

Rittenhouse has started carrying a new overdyed cotton floss from Pirate + Robin.  It is a soft six-stranded floss and "wonderful hand-painted colors."

Rittenhouse recommends 1-2 plies for cross stitch,  3-4 for 18 count needlepoint canvas and all 6 plies for 13 count.  Ten yards come to a skein.  You can see the 194 colors Rittenhouse carries on their website.

Creating Feathers with Buttonhole Stitch: The Movie

The Wool and the Floss has posted a video tutorial on how to use buttonhole stitch for turkey feathers.  Here it is on Facebook.

It's actually quite easy.  Note that you will use a pretty fat thread but it won't completely cover the canvas.  If this bothers you, tent stitch the feathers with 1-2 plies of cotton floss first, then add the buttonhole stitch with your fatter thread on top.  If you go this route, use a slightly larger needle than usual for the button hole stitches.  Here's the video on Instagram.

The Mystery of Split Stitch SOLVED

I've always wondered why masters of needlepoint like Tony Minieri (and he's not the only one) insist that split stitch be done by coming UP through the previous stitch instead of going down into it.  Now Mary Corbet has explained why:  Coming up through the previous stitch leaves less thread on the back side than going down into the previous stitch and uses less thread.  Going down is called Split Back Stitch, which I didn't know either.  Mary's explanation is in the "Split Stitch As a Filling" section of this article.

Mary also points out that if you use an odd number of plies instead of an even number, you are less likely to have gaps where the needle coming up or down pushes the thread plies aside to reveal the ground fabric.

By the way, if you aren't familiar with split stitch or split back stitch, Mary explains split stitch here.

She doesn't have a tutorial for split back stitch but the needle goes down into the previous stitch from the front instead of coming up into the previous stitch from the back side.

A Tool To Make Dark Canvases Easier to See

The Wool and the Floss has started using a hard silver pencil to mark on dark canvas.  You can also use it to lightly color over darker canvas to make it easier to see.  To answer your question, they say stitchers who have used it claim it doesn't come off on your threads because it is a very hard lead pencil.

The shop sells the Prismacolor Verithin Argent Metallique pencil in Metallic Silver bundled with a pencil sharpener in case you don't have one at home.

Alice Peterson Show

I find the Alice Peterson website very hard to navigate--there are so many wonderful things!  Luckily for me, Stitch by Stitch Larchmont is having an Alice Peterson trunk show and have arranged a wonderful display of the designs available.  Pour yourself a favorite beverage, settle back, and enjoy the show.

Stitched Up is also have a special trunk show of discontinued Alice Peterson canvases, so you can see some older favorites here.

The range of delightful items is huge, isn't it?

Curing the Slump with Color Dreams Floche

I have a prescription for those after holiday blahs--a thread you haven't tried before!

There are currently 47 colors, which you can browse here.

If you haven't used floche before, think a smooth perle cotton that glides through your canvas.  As Ruth says, it is perfect for backgrounds and blackwork patterns but it also makes for a wonderful flower or animal, given the (usually) subtle color changes.

Then there are Ruth's "Wild" and her "Wacky."  Got any clowns or witches that need hair on your canvas?

News from the Bead Industry

Susan Johnson of SJ Designs has published a new e-newsletter that talks about the changes in the bead industry.  To sum up, Swarovski has stopped selling their crystals and beads to the craft industry and now Precosia is no longer making most pearl colors and styles.  So Susan is looking for replacements in Europe.

SJ Designs is one of my Go To places to shop for beads, pearls and metal findings.  If you'd like to browse, here is her website.

Dome Magnifiers and Missed Stitches

KC Needlepoint has a short article about magnifier domes, which are used to check for missed stitches.  The shop carries two sizes.  Over the years I've seen a lot of these in various configurations.  Check with your favorite shop to see what they carry.

Lori at Waste Knot demonstrates how to use the magnifier domes, with tips on other ways to find missed stitches in this Instagram video.

If you don't want to invest in a new tool, try taking a photo or a scan of your piece.  The camera will sometimes reveal things you don't see using your eyes only.
