Watching Helen Stitch

Many folks find needle painting intimidating and difficult, even though this very realistic technique gives amazing results. I was quite pleased to discover that the English embroiderer Helen M. Stevens has posted a series of short videos on her Helen M. Stevens True Embroideries Facebook page.   The videos show exactly what she does to create realistic flowers and each is full of great tips for better stitching and better realism.  I think these are practice videos that are supplements to Helen's classes.
https://www.facebook.com/HelenMStevensTrueEmbroideries/videos

If you aren't familiar with Helen's books or embroideries, here's a real treat--her website.  Note her eBooks section for those who want to take a lesson with Helen from the comfort of their home.  If you don't have a Facebook account, you can certainly see other videos Helen's made by following the links at the bottom of the home page.
http://www.helenmstevens.co.uk

Helen's eBook publisher, Vivebooks, also has a YouTube page where there are six more videos by Helen, all different than the ones above, so you can indulge yourself with lots more needlepainting there as well.

The iOS 9 Update and SuZy Murphy

Those who have Apple mobile devices who also own SuZy Murphy's "SuZy Portable Stitches" and SuZy's Stitches II" and who have upgraded to iOS 9 may be unable to use the apps now. I can open the first book but when I choose a stitch, the app crashes. I can't even open "SuZy's Stitches II."  It crashes as soon as I click on it.  Not everyone has this problem, but most folks do.  SuZy and her developer are working on the problem, though. Hopefully they will have a fix before too long.

Stay tuned!

Fancy Work and Fantasies: A Tale of Hapsburg Lace UPDATED

Ruth has been working "Hapsburg Lace" which you'd think is a style of needlework, but it isn't.  She explains here--
http://ruthsneedlework.blogspot.com/2015/09/my-name-is-ruth-and-i-am-needlework.html

The best place I know of to pick up some of the Fancy Work and Fantasies charts now is Alex Paras, the online arm of Thistle Needlework.  Ruth linked to the site in her article above.  Don't miss the very beautiful "Eterna" which is my favorite of Carol Costello's designs.
http://store.apneedlearts.com/fawofa.html

The Pampered Stitcher on Etsy also has some of Carol's work.  Use the Search This Shop box in the middle of the page to see them all.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/ThePamperedStitcher?ref=l2-shop-info-name

These designs are from the 1980s but they are classics all the same, even if they are over thirty years old.  After all, when WE hit our thirties, we were just coming into our prime!

UPDATE: By coincidence Julie posted a Tanja Berlin design called Hapsburg Lace on Facebook this morning.  The second link below describes her classes using this technique.  Thanks, Julie!

Charting and Then Painting a Canvas

Carmen is interested in charting software she can use to paint designs on canvas for basketweave pillows, and tried out two programs. Her thoughts on the demos and the software she ended up buying are here.
https://knitweave.wordpress.com/2015/08/24/needlepoint-software-some-early-thoughts/

If you are a Mac user your choices are a little more limited, particularly if you don't want to run a dual Mac/PC system.

Carmen has started painting her design on canvas, which I found very interesting. She talks in detail about her supplies and how she goes about it.   I'm looking forward to an update on this.

UPDATES:  I checked Carmen's blog (RSS feeders don't work with it for some reason) and found two more progress reports.

A Thread Garden and Presencia Perle Cotton

Ruth gives us a peek at her stitching and her use of Presencia's perle cotton.  I happen to really like the colors and the sheen of this lovely perle cotton and I also like the variety of diameters it is available in.  Very useful stuff!

In case you want to try Presencia and your local shop doesn't carry it, here is A Thread Garden's website.  Don't buy it all, ok?  The rest of us need some!

Help Learning Painted Canvas Embellishment

The trend these days is to use fancy threads and stitches on painted canvases.   In fact, the big needlepoint group on Facebook has at least one plea a day for help finding a stitch guide! Sadly, a lot of these quests for a guide come to nothing, the number of canvases available today being so large and the number of folks who do stitch guides professionally so small.  Most folks will have to come up with their own guides to stitching a canvas. How do you know how to do that? Experience, my friend. You learn by doing. However, there is help available to get you started. ANG's website posted this article I wrote ages ago about how I choose threads and stitches for a painted canvas. I also wrote an article for ANG's magazine Needle Pointers about why I choose the threads I did for a Russian Santa canvas. If you have a friend who has the May 2014 issue, ask to borrow it, or keep an eye out on eBay for this issue.
http://www.needlepoint.org/FAQ/phobia.php

The Stitches for Effect series of books are very very useful to someone who needs help choosing stitches for their canvas. Written by Suzanne Howren and the late Beth Robertson, there are three books in the series. They are organized by effect so that if you need a stitch for snowflakes, you can look in the index and find stitches recommended for snow and snowflakes. The front of each book talks about various threads and the companies that produce them which is helpful if you aren't familiar with them or don't have a shop nearby and have to mail order supplies.
http://www.threadneedlestreet.com/booksndptstitches.htm

Ruth Dilts's Needlepoint 101 and Needlepoint 202 books are also useful. They are not as helpful for looking things up but I think they are very inspirational for new stitchers as Ruth shows off a series of projects and explains what stitch (with diagrams!) she used and why. You can use Ruth's ideas for beards, clothes, houses, etc. over and over in your own projects. Her books are not as full of stitches as the Stitches for Effect series but they are cheaper if you aren't certain you want to learn embellishment and I think they are less intimidating to beginners.
http://www.newneedlepoint.com/content-product_info/product_id-2446/needlepoint_101_guide_to_painted_canvas_by_ruth_dilts.html

http://www.newneedlepoint.com/content-product_info/product_id-2447/needlepoint_202_embellishment_of_the_painted_canvas_by_ruth_dilts.html

Of course you can always ask your stitching friends and your local shop for ideas and help.  However, many of us are rather isolated so I suggest you join online groups that are set up to allow posting of photographs so you can let people see your problem areas and make suggestions.

ANG's email list is run on Yahoo Groups which means you can post photographs there for folks to see and comment on.
http://www.needlepoint.org/MailingList.php

Facebook's Needlepoint Group also does the same thing.  But don't worry.  Both groups are thrilled to have traditional stitchers posting photographs of their beautiful basketweave as well.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/NeedlepointNation/

Embellishment is fun.  It takes some work and thought and you'll probably rip out things, but needlepoint is an adventure, after all.  You don't want it to be too easy, right?

Hugs to all from Chilly Hollow,
Jane

Stitching Order Matters

Kathy at The Unbroken Thread explains in detail how to achieve perspective in stitch.  This is a crewel piece but the principle is the same in needlepoint.

Those who have a Facebook account will want to "follow" Helen M. Stevens True Embroideries as Helen posts photos of her amazing embroidery pieces with hints how to achieve perspective and realism using various stitches.  Again, she doesn't needlepoint but the principles (and stitches!) remain the same.

Stitches and Threads for Faces

There are lots and lots of stitches useful for faces.  Besides tent stitches, consider Brick Stitch Over Two as seen here in my Pirate Cat from Patt and Lee...
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2010/09/pirate-cat-has-sweet-face-and-brocade.html

...Interlocking Gobelin works nicely for animal faces and long and short or split stitch is stunning as a face if you have the confidence to try.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2013/10/repairing-recreating-hand-embroidered-vestments.html

You can also use a different thread than the normal cotton or silk to get wonderful looks.  Flair is wonderful for faces, for example.
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2010/05/snowmans-face-and-background.html

I used the clear Water N Ice for my Blue Russian's face.  Both turned out great!
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2013/12/blue-russian-santa-has-glass-face.html

Here's what Sue Dulle says about faces.
https://sudukc.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/torin-ailfred-opatrick-and-faces/

I hope all this gives you ideas for the next portrait in your stitching rotation.

Miko's Face

Several years back I stitched Leigh Designs's Fash Insert "Miko" which is a portrait of a geisha sized to fit in those Leigh tote bags.  Here is the entire design for those interested in seeing the whole thing.
http://www.leighdesigns.com/Sgl7616.html

Her face, eyes and lips are done in the most common way we choose to stitch faces--tent stitches for the skin and eyes and mouth.  There are lots of things to consider in going this traditional route, however--things like what type thread and technical issues like perfecting your stitches so they don't distract from the emotion on the face.  The two links below summarize Miko very well I think.
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2011/09/perfecting-mikos-face.html

http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2011/09/mikos-lips.html

Leigh Designs' Miko 7616
Here is Miko finished for your viewing pleasure.  She's a totally traditionally stitched face, so next time I'll talk about using stitches other than tent for a face.

Breaking News: A Collection of Designs Sold

Apparently Janet Burnett of A Collection of Designs has sold her company to the conglomerate that owns Needlepoint.com, Kirk and Hamilton, and Elizabeth Bradley Designs. I'm told the new entity is being referred to as Kirk and Bradley and Burnett in advertising, but on the ACOD website it is called Burnett and Bradley.

Destination Dallas

Destination Dallas is a non-TNNA wholesale only trade show for needlepoint and associated supplies, where the shops and the people who supply them gather in a hotel in Dallas and have fun running from suite to suite, checking out the newest items and placing orders. Some things are cash and carry, which means a few days after the September 26-28 show, your shop owner will pull him- or herself together and drag tons of new goodies into the shop.  Other things will appear over the fall as orders are filled.  You can read a bit about what is planned here.
http://www.destinationdallas.net

I'll update the Destination Dallas tab with the latest information as I find it.

Help Stitching Hair

Almost every needlepoint face is framed by hair--straight, curly, wavy, spiky, wild, or controlled.  So how do you stitch hair?  Let's ask the experts.  Here's a compilation of hair resources in various books, blogs, and videos.
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2011/05/hair-resources.html

Many folks have posted about how their created the specific hairstyle on their current project.  Maybe your hair puzzle can be solved by getting their help.  Want to try a wigmaker's knot?  Colleen has step-by-step instructions.
http://www.stitchinginthetexashillcountry.com/the_needle_works/2013/09/share-a-stitch-sunday-september-22.html

How about really really REALLY curly hair?  Sandy shows how easy it is to create.
http://sandyarthur.blogspot.com/2015/05/stumped-for-hairdo-here-is-recent.html

Do you need flowing but curly locks?  This stumpwork tutorial by Anna is a lot easier than you would think hearing the word "stumpwork."
http://annascottembroidery.blogspot.com/2014/06/curly-wild-hair.html

How about stylized wavy hair?  It's easier than you think if you use ideas from the great Amy Bunger like Steph did.
http://stephsstitching.blogspot.com/2014/08/straight-from-stephs-beauty-shop.html

Four years ago (My!  How time flies!) I posted about hair on Blog and asked folks for their ideas based on a series of portraits from A Collection of Designs.  Here is the collective wisdom of many stitches.  Make sure you read the Comments section below the main article.
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2011/05/brainstorming-hair.html

Ok, now we have hair, eye and skin ideas.  Now let's talk about stitches for faces next.

All these links are in my  "Tutorials and Tips" tab above but I've noticed most folks don't realize that is there so it bears repeating in the main part of Blog.

UPDATE: Jane G. reminded me of the Access Commodites skin tone kits.  They come in a clear plastic box with instructions on how to use them written by Tony Minieri.   Jane says each set comes with a wide variety of silks. You can see them on the Access Commodities website but you'll have to click on "Silk Thread Kits" and then on "Access Commodites Skin Tones" to see them.

Leaves Fall and Halloween Approaches New Jersey

The weather is starting to turn here in Chilly Hollow so up north hundreds of miles from us this is certainly happening to Nimble Needle in New Jersey.  The shop is celebrating by putting seasonal canvases on sale and posting the latest in shop news in their e-newsletter (second link below).

The Needlepoint Portrait

Melissa Shirley's Red Geisha

I've been thinking about needlepoint portraits a bit lately, spurred by this counted canvaswork image of Catherine the Great from Gay Ann Rogers. Gay Ann's been posting finished versions of her design on her website home page. She also has photos of her Queen Elizabeth I, as well as Bess of Hardwick and Mary, Queen of Scots still on her website, too.  Click on "Elizabethean" to see them.
http://www.gayannrogers.com

It's interesting how each portrait is a tad different, even though they were all stitched from the same counted canvaswork set of instructions.  Each has a bit of their own personality added by their stitcher.  In needlepoint faces, one stitch can make a huge difference.  You can see this in Penny MacLeod's painted canvas portraits, too.  Look at all the women on The Collection's website (The Collection is Penny's distributor).  Each has a different expression--wary, inquisitive, bold, puzzled, friendly.
http://www.thecollectiondesigns.com/penny-macleod.html

Even stylized faces of geishas can have their expression changed with just one stitch.  Above is Melissa Shirley's Red Geisha which I stitched for her.  Look at her lips.  The expression could be very different if I hadn't left the tiny red stitch between her parted lips visible.  Now to me she looks like she is about to speak.

Maybe we'll talk about faces later this week.

By the way, Red Geisha is being discontinued so if you fall in love, act before Melissa runs out of stock.

Shop News: Stitch By Stitch in Larchmont

Stitch By Stitch in Larchmont, NY has a website now!   It's a fun visit, too.  The slideshow on the front page shows the shop exterior and interior plus plenty of great finished pieces.  You can see more lovely finished work by clicking on "Gallery."
http://www.stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com

They have a Stitcher of the Month profile on the website blog and list their trunk shows and sales, too.  I had a fun time looking around and I bet you will, too.

The Traveler's Tool Box

Brenda likes to take her stitching with her in the car, so she needed just the right carrying case for her auto. Her solution is the Namaste cases.
http://brendasneedlepointstudio.blogspot.com/2015/09/namaste-cases.html

You can pick up a Namaste case (look for the Buddy cases) here and here.  (These were the first needlework shops carrying them that came up in a Google search but your local shop may have these also.)
http://cloudwww.thesilverneedle.com/gadgetsgiftsandaccessories.php

This isn't every accessories case Namaste offers, though.  You can see the wide range of options on their website.

Here's a bit about the Needle Index Brenda mentioned, by the way.  You may still be able to pick one up via Needle in a Haystack (second link below).

Ros Goes to RSN

A friend of Mary Corbet's just took a course at the Royal School of Needlework and reported back to Mary about her experience. It's fascinating to hear how the class was run and get an idea of how RSN approaches teaching students, just in case we get to take a class there one day.

Mary Agnes Goes to the Trade Show

Mary Agnes of Needle Nicely in Florida reminiscences about going to trade shows in the 1970s. Some things have changed and some things never do!

http://needlenicely.blogspot.com/2015/09/travels-with-mary-agnes-and-trubey-ii.html

Not to worry, MA.  I've been elbowed aside by 90 year old Jewish grandmothers who were happy to yell at me in Yiddish at the deli on the Upper East Side many a day.  The exasperated counterman finally told me I was going to have to push back.  Of course, being a good Southern girl, no way could I do that.  Doormat to pushy old ladies--that's me!

I've never had a husband disappear overboard, though.  Neither has MA, I hasten to assure you!

I've made a note to include a young, six foot blonde female on all my future trips, however.

The Nina Goerres Fund Designs UPDATED

Counted canvas workers everywhere are rejoicing (along with fans of the late Nina Goerres) at the release of the older Nina Goerres Fund designs to the public.  Nina was a much loved member of the San Bernardino Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild.  She left money to the guild to use for educational purposes at her death.  SBCANG has used the funds to commission a yearly chart in Nina's honor.  Designers such as Carol Algie Higgenbotham, Janet Zigler Casey, Amy Wolfson, Sue Reed and now Carole Lake and Michael Boren have created designs for the chapter courtesy of Nina's legacy.  You can see all the designs except the brand new 2015-16 one here.
http://www.sbneedlepoint.org/index.html

All of the designs are free to chapter members and cost $20 for everyone else (for a PDF file version--mailed ones cost more to cover paper, postage, etc.).   (The 2015-16 design is not available to any but chapter members at this time.)  If you are interested in ordering, please contact the Nina Fund Chair at sbchapter+ngchair@gmail.com and put Nina's name in the subject line.

Thanks, Nina!

UPDATE:  Belle Sprague let me know that "Bonnie Brae," the newest Nina Goerres Fund design can been seen if you click on the link to the September meeting in the Programs section in the SBCANG website link above. There is also a link at the top of the home page to membership information. They love long distance members!

Animal Fayre has a darling small panda.

There's also a wonderful Panda Treasure Box on Etsy.

The latest panda is this needle minder that Ridgewood posted--along with several other new magnets--on their blog.
http://ridgewoodneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2015/09/new-magnets.html

I also found another style of panda magnet over at Bedecked and Beaddazzled.
https://www.bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/Exclusive-Panda-Magnet/

Speaking of accessories, you can even pick up a crochet panda tape measure.
http://www.buttonsetc.com/tapemeasures

I think while we weren't looking pandas became nearly as prevalent as fox and owl canvases!

Dainty Dots Decoupage

Dainty Dots Decoupage's Needle Magnets

Needle minder collectors and someone looking for an unusual gift for a stitcher will want to check out the Facebook page of Dainty Dots Decoupage.  I grabbed a photo at random from her FB page so those not on FB could see the size and general style (above).  This UK-based company creates decoupage needle magnets featuring some lovely vintage designs.  And yes, she does ship to the US.

Trish Tutorials: Needle Painting

Trish Burr, the South African teacher and writer best known for her embroidery classes and kits, is going to post a series of tutorials on her website. The first one is available and it is on needle painting, the technique by which you create realistic animals and plants with a single ply of (usually) cotton floss.  Of course we needlepointers use a readily countable ground, i.e., needlepoint canvas, but if you switch to a sharp needle you can put your stitches anywhere you wish, even through one of those underlying canvas threads.  We don't use hoops or typically wash our work after the stitching is done, though.  Still, with a few modifications, needle painting is very useful for needlepointers.
http://trishburr.com/tutorials/

Trish also reminds us she has free designs on her website to use to practice what you have learned.

A Tip on Value from Bob

Hunt Country Yarns is only about 90 minutes from me but they aren't on the way to anywhere so I've not visited since they moved. It's too bad because Bob (the owner) always has fun tips. Here Bob talks about Value when choosing colors. Yes, he uses skeins of knitting yarn (Hunt County Yarns is 2/3 a knitting shop with needlepoint on the side) to illustrate his point, but the theory still applies to needlepoint.

Stitch like a Politician

If political madness is overtaking your household, at least you can stitch like a Democrat (or Republican)!  Here are a selection of political designs for you to choose from.  Ridgewood has little boxes.
http://ridgewoodneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2015/08/political-party-hinged-box-canvases.html

You can stitch the fun patriotic donkey and elephant ornaments from Rebecca Wood.
http://rittenhouseneedlepoint.com/patriotic-donkey.html

http://rittenhouseneedlepoint.com/patriotic-elephant.html

You can stitch coasters from Canvasworks in either elephant...
http://rittenhouseneedlepoint.com/elephant-coasters-set-of-4.html

...or donkey versions.
http://rittenhouseneedlepoint.com/donkey-coasters-set-of-4.html

Or you can just stitch something that covers both parties, courtesy of Petei.

Seeking Helene

Recently someone asked the ANG email list about a thread called Helene. I'd never heard of it, but Mary Jo says It is "a Rainbow Gallery Thread with the full name Backgrounds Helene -- a single ply 100% silk thread made in Switzerland. It is available in white and black on 20 yard cards."
http://www.rainbowgallery.com/Detail.CFM?ID=322

It is possible the white is more of an ivory color...
http://www.rainbowgallery.com/Detail.CFM?ID=224

...but on the color card it looks white.
http://www.rainbowgallery.com/detail.cfm?ID=84

Terry Dryden sells it in her Etsy store.
https://www.etsy.com/in-en/listing/218778483/helene-backgrounds-silk-yarns-silk

So does Stitcher's Paradise (look under Backgrounds).
http://www.stitchers-paradise.com/threads/RainbowGallery.html

Needle in a Haystack has all the Backgrounds threads from Rainbow Gallery although they are a special order.  They are not in stock, in other words.
http://www.needlestack.com/WebStore/Thread/RG_Misc.html

Interesting question!  I never knew that Rainbow Gallery had a line of threads (including Helene) intended for backgrounds.

A Finishing and Custom Design Alert

The recent closing of a shop in New York has stranding canvases several places.   If you are a stitcher, look at this photograph.

Is this your canvas?

West Coast Finishing has had this peace sign design for several months and doesn't know who it belongs to.  They would like to return it to its owner.

Did you commission this for Sophie?

Devon Nicholson Designs created this original design and doesn't know who commissioned it.  Is this  Sophie piece yours?

Do you have this tallis bag for finishing?

If you are a finisher, check out this tallis bag photograph.  The person who designed and stitched it is desperate to locate it but they don't know which finisher it was sent to.

All these photographs were posted to Facebook in the hopes that someone would recognize them.  If you do, please either email me at chillyhollow@hotmail.com or leave a comment below and I'll put you in touch with the person who owns or has custody of them.  Thank you!
