A Big Sale at CanvasesBeGone

I've pretty much stopped posting about sales and trunk shows since I think such messages just train folks to shop for the best price, not for the shop that will be there for them through thread emergencies, help them through idea droughts and generally help them get the canvases they want stitched to match their personal style. Well, you and I don't, but Canvases Be Gone now is readable by Android flavor phones. Sounds like you have to download the app and then you can use your phone to visit the site. This doesn't work for Apple devices, sadly, but Dale says they are expensive and complex to write.

Needlepoint Now News

Dale at Canvases Be Gone brings us news of a change at Needlepoint Now magazine plus a controversy over the magazine's publishing the names of finishers.  Thanks for the update and the news and for your support for a magazine I enjoy very much!  Without Dale's posting I wouldn't' have known that folks were unhappy with the magazine, although of course I did know that many folks are not thrilled to have the magazine go from line drawn projects to publishing painted canvas stitch guides.

More Petei Sources

I finally made it to Woodlawn's needlework exhibit and enjoyed every minute! I'm working on my report but this will take me several weeks as I have deadlines to meet first.  I also hit the shops and saw several of the Alice in Wonderland series and other Petei canvases at Waste Knot, so if you are looking for one of these pieces, talk to the staff there to see what they still have. Prices are around $20-25 if I remember correctly, depending on the size of the canvas you want.

And the Winner Is.... UPDATED

I promised last week to draw names from commentators to my article about Brenda Hart's It's In the Bag book. This little spiral bound book is all about twenty purse canvases from The Red Thread and how to stitch them, with stitch guides by Brenda herself.  The book has a great photo of each finished purse and a succinct stitch guide for each.  If you are a purse fan, you need this book.

I listed all the names of those who entered and went to Random.org and drew a number.  The winner is the MN Stitcher!

The Finished Scarabs Ring Jewelry Box

I thought you'd like to see photos of the finished jewelry box. The box itself is from Sudberry and seems to have been discontinued. Too bad, it is well made and quite lovely. Needlepoint Now Extras UPDATED AGAIN

Now that the September/October 2011 Needlepoint Now is in the mail and starting to arrive in subscribers' mailboxes, I wanted to tell you about a few extras that pertain to this issue.  If you are in love with the cover 9/11 commemorative piece and want to stitch it, Dale Miller says she has this canvas in her Canvases Be Gone shop.  This is a large and expensive piece, even at her discount price, but Dale says she will offer a further 15 percent discount to a buyer if they email her first to get a discount code before checking out.  I'm not sure how many copies Dale has of this canvas, so don't dawdle if you are interested.

After Luna

dede's Cat Topiary Garden

I have finished work on Red Geisha (sorry, no pictures until after the Columbus trade show), which means I am now doing the last sections on my Ladies of the Night piece.  Luna's cloak is huge and I'm still working to get that area done before I can pick up the last bit, her sleeves. I have probably more than two weeks' worth of stitching before I finish Luna.

But I am already planning for my next project.  I'm going to be working an 11 1/2 x 13 1/2 inch canvas from dede Odgen which I call the Cat Topiary Garden.

This is intended to hang on the door of my mother's new apartment.  All her neighbors have floral wreaths on their doors but Mom says they look like funeral wreaths, so I've been hunting for something to stitch for her to put on her door.  This canvas is perfect as it combines her love of gardens with her love of cats.

The reason I'm mentioning this so early is that I picked up Cat Topiary Garden at the Canvases Be Gone website at a good price, and the owner of the business tells me she has several of these same canvases (in both 13 or 18 count--I bought an 18 count version) still in stock.  She got them from dede herself as they are a discontinued design.  So if you want to stitch along with me, get in touch with Canvases Be Gone and get your canvas now before I start mine.

There won't be a stitch guide for Cat Topiary Garden since it is discontinued, so I'll be talking about this canvas here in enough detail you'll be able to stitch with me whether you got the 13 or 18 count version.  I plan to use light coverage stitches, tulle, beads, and perhaps old Czech glass buttons as I create a door hanging that'll make Mom proud.  I'll also talk about how I finish this piece so you can follow along there in case you want a wall or door hanging as well.

Where to Dispose of Excess Stash

Several folks have asked for information on places to either donate or sell items from your stash you no longer want.

This is it! I counted 19 people who entered in the drawing for the Mile High Princess Beach Angel kit, which comes with everything you need to stitch her except scissors, and also includes Ruth Dilt's Needlepoint 202 to help you figure out the next painted canvas.

The entrants range from an 11-year-old who wants to learn whose grandmother entered for her to a very experienced stitcher who collects painted canvases but is afraid to try them.  I wish I could give a kit to everyone.  I had no idea there were so many painted canvas novices lurking in my computer!

I went to random.org and used the true random number generator box on the right side of the page, asking for a number between 1 and 19.  The result was eight, so I went to my list of entrants and counted up from the bottom (the first person who entered) and found that SueStitch was the winner.

Retractable Scissors Holders

Once again, I have some fun things for you to see.  Tanja Berlin's latest newsletter has some beautiful new tools that are unusual in that they have abalone shell accents.  The link below takes you to beautiful retractable scissors holders shown above you clip to your shirt or the edge of your canvas.  Some styles have the shell, some have flowers.  Scroll down a bit and you'll see a lovely laying tool inlaid with abalone.  Scroll up to see cheap but sharp scissors, then down again to see other fascinating tools, from a spool holder for folks who are tatting to two sharp stilettos perfect for your favorite cosy mystery sleuth to find buried to the hilt in a corpse.  [Fiction only, please!  We don't approve of real life violence in CH.]
