Obviously all this Christmas fun is bringing out the smarts in stitchers. Check out what Lisa did to keep track of her needle threader--she stuck a magnet on it! Very clever!

A Needlepoint Profile of the Authors
Lycette Designs did a fun profile of the authors of Sophistication is Overrated by concentrating on their needlepoint shop background and love of our favorite needle art. You'll learn their favorite shops, that "belts are men's charm bracelets" and what they binge watch when stitching. Fun!
http://lycettedesigns.com/women-point-sophistication-overrated/
Since we also learned that their book about entertaining has a chapter on needlepoint, here's a link to learn more and perhaps buy yourself a copy if Santa didn't provide it.

The Newest Kreinik Colors UPDATED
Newest Kreinik Colors |
I just got my hands on the newest colors from Kreinik. That's what you see in the photograph above. The two whites are both size 8 but the others are all size 4 which is what I use mostly. The white colors don't come in size 4 yet. The whites are 2132 HL (it has a gold highlight in it that is supposed to be copper but it looks golden to me) and 1232HL which has a distinct tinge of purple. Both are very pretty! Sorry you can't see the highlights in the photo but if you are in a shop that has them, ask to see the new colors. In good light the purple or copper-gold sheen is lovely. By the way, the new whites are not the stark white of Marshmallow 5760 but more like 032 with additional colors mixed in.
The other colors are more muted. There are two purples--4206 is the lighter shade of pale, almost grayish purple and 5013 is the darker. The darker purple 5013 is shiny and unusual--it is a purple mixed with a sort of brick clay red. I think it is lovely but it is a flashy color.
There are two greens as well. 4203 is the darker olive green-gold and appears to have a touch of silver in it. 4201 is the paler light green.
The last set of colors are a light dull silver (4205) and 4204 which is a dark and dull charcoal with touches of silver. Both will be lovely for shading--we don't do enough shading of metallics in my opinion! The final color is 4202 which is a dull brown, again with silver. The 4201, 4202, 4203, 4204, and 4205 set are all shading colors similar to Kreinik colors that became unavailable due to Kreinik not being able to get the base materials. I think the 4206 is a new shade but the others substitute for older colors. 4203 is the most interesting of the lot. In some lights it looks golden. If you need a tarnished gold or gold with moss in it, I think this is the color.
Here are the new colors on Kreinik's blog and website. The 4201-4205 series don't appear to be on their color card yet.
http://kreinikthread.blogspot.com/2016/10/three-new-kreinik-colors.html
I urge you to take a look at the new colors in your favorite shop or on the Kreinik website, then look carefully at your next design. Then tell Santa! These will be terrific on the right canvas.
UPDATE: Karen at Nimble Needle in NJ has a photo of the Kreinik whites and some words of wisdom about picking the right shade.

The latest shop e-newsletter for Bedecked and Beaddazzled has revealed the Winter 2017 mystery class from Ruth Schmuff--Lulu My Pink Turtle's Angel Queen Hearts! This is a 10 inch square design on 18 count, so there is a lot of room to run wild. And you know Ruth--"Run Wild" is her motto!
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2016/12/a-new-lulu-for-new-year.html
As always with Ruth's mystery classes, I'll update this article with links to her class progress photos so you can see all the fun.
UPDATE: Ruth starts the same way I do, with faces and backgrounds. The background especially is a charmer, plus she does the wings. I alway find wings hard. Lots of great ideas here, even if you are not taking this class.

BREAKING NEWS: Tony Minieri Resting Up
Labels:

Tony Minieri
Fans of The Headmaster Himself will be interested to hear that he's out of commission for a bit due to health issues. He posted this on his Facebook page yesterday.
"Hi Everyone!!!
I went to the Doctor today December 12, and after a new MRI and examination the Doctor told me that a new problem cropped up and this one is only fixable with surgery, so with in the next 2 1/2 weeks I will be going into the hospital for surgery.
It seems like it is going to be a bit complicated but my Doctor told me I will be out of pain, walking normally again and I will need some further therapy but different from the type of therapy I have been doing since October. He told me I should be fine to go back to work on March 1, 2017.
I am disappointed that I could not honor my teaching commitments but I truly have not been able to work. I have loved being home every night, sleeping in my own bed and spending so much time with my dear and wonderful Husband Luis, and spending time with Family and friends here in N.J.
I wish Every one Wonderful Holidays!"
"Hi Everyone!!!
I have had a very , very busy year with many great classes and surprises. The biggest surprise was lower back issues that started developing in June 2016 and became intense enough to stop me in my tracks in October. Unfortunately , my body decided it was time to remind me exactly how old I am. I had to stop working in late October and was going to be able to go back to work in late January. The day after I stopped working I started Physical Therapy 3 times a week. It was grueling at times but beneficial; however not enough for the problems I have.

And we wish Tony Minieri a great 2017 that is pain free and full of dear friends and family and wonderful stitching.

The slide show of Frances' rugs in various dollhouses and miniature rooms is great fun to watch and then you can go browse her designs. I suggest you click on "All Products," click on the first design photo to come up, then hit Next to see everything. Clicking on the individual pages will give you a better look.

Etsy is Cracking Down on Copyright Infringement
Looks as if Etsy is cracking down on shop owners who are violating copyright. Good for them! I don't think using other folks' intellectual property for your own gain is ethical or legal. Of course I've had blog articles plagiarized, so I have personal reasons to be pretty strict about this both here and on Facebook's Needlepoint Nation.
http://www.thewriteassistantllc.com/2016/11/09/etsy-shop-shutdowns/
It also looks like they are cracking down on shops selling merchandise that they did not make themselves. I wonder what effect this will have on shops selling needlepoint canvases? I think this is geared towards shops that import items made in Chinese and Thai factories and pass them off as their own creations. I'm pleased about this as I feel Etsy is supposed to be a place for creators to sell their personal handwork.
What are your opinions on this?

A Shot of Color for a Dreary Day
I write Blog articles ahead of time, mostly about three-four weeks before they will publish. Therefore I don't really know if today's going to be dreary but hey!--it's December! Everyone needs a shot of color and fun finishing in December, right? Therefore I'm reviving Finishing Friday as a special treat. First, let's see what Ruth Schmuff's students have done with their mermaids from Lulu My Pink Turtle....
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2016/11/beaches-mermaids-and-seashells.html
The design is called La Sirena and it was a mystery class from Bedecked and Beaddazzled last summer. You can pick up the class kit from Ruth any time you need a mermaid (and mer-cat) in your life.
http://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/product/la-sirena/
Our other shot of fabulousness is from Suzie Vallerie at Enriched Stitch. This is a Kate Dickerson piece called "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." This also was a class at Suzie's shop. She just got it back from the framer.
http://astheneedleturns.com/girls-just-wanna-have-fun/
If you want to play with ribbons, the kit is also available.

Now, don't you feel better?

Picking Colors

Recently I've been working on a counted canvaswork piece, Gay Ann Roger's Queen Elizabeth Heart. You can see Beth's finished heart here--
http://bethsneedleworkstash.blogspot.com/2013/01/heart-of-elizabeth-stitched.html
You may have noticed photos of my heart posted here in the background or over in the right hand column as I worked away. Obviously my colors are totally different. That's because I bought the instructions used without any of the threads and beads that come in the kit. I planned to substitute items from my stash. But what colors? Should I stick with an Elizabethean look or choose favorite colors?
I am no good at picking colors that will work together so I decide to cheat. I google'd Japanese kimonos and choose my favorite--a wedding kimono made by Chiso--then picked the colors from that. You can see the kimono itself in the background of Blog and you can also see it on the Chiso website. Just click on the arrows to cycle through their lovely pieces.
http://www.chiso.co.jp
The colors I came up with are dark plum, persimmon, harvest gold, and lime green with gold, emerald and ruby touches for the jewelry along with pearls. The heart is stitched on white Congress cloth. I had only blue and ecru so I chose to use the ecru rather than buy new.
Then I had to go through the instructions very carefully, listing all the colors used for each part. That way I knew charcoal silk floss was used in the original for the blackwork. Then I went through my stash, looking for colors from the kimono that I had in silk flosses so I knew what I had to use on my version of the blackwork. Make sense?
It took a lot of rummaging and planning and I did change my mind several times, using the harvest gold only once and changing a gold area to lime green, but I finally came up with a pretty unusual color scheme. When I finish the heart I'll post a photograph of the final look, with apologies to Gay Ann Rogers and thanks for a very interesting design.

A Leigh Custom for the Doctor |
Over the years I've heard lots of stories about Dr. Ray Endicott, retired doctor in Hawaii who was a demon stitcher. He loved Asian designs especially and stitched a great many, which of course made him a kindred spirit. The design on the left is a custom Leigh Designs made for him. Isn't it lovely?
http://www.caron-net.com/03janfiles/jan03fea.html
I was very sad to hear that the world just lost Dr. Ray. His battle with ill health is over, but he's left a legacy of wonderful stitching and great memories. Thanks, Dr. Ray! Loved your geishas! (By the way, there is also a tribute to Sandy Rodgers here. It's not been a good month for the World of Needlepoint.)

Sandy Rodgers
I've just gotten confirmation that Sandy Rodgers, teacher, writer and stitcher extraordinary, has died. She was a delightful person, a wonderful teacher for both ANG and EGA and a superb stitcher who did the most beautiful silk and metal embroidery on needlepoint canvas. Plus Sandy wrote articles for all the needlepoint magazines for years and years. I always enjoyed her profiles of new products immensely.

I am so sorry to have never had a change to take one of Sandy's classes. My condolences to her family and friends. We will miss her.

Crewel Videos and Embroidery Tips

Once again Mary Corbet has mentioned things of great interest to embroiderers--that there are great videos on The Crewel Work Company's revamped website and EGA has published a booklet with embroidery tips that is available for online viewing or download. Since needlepointers often use crewel stitches, you'll want to check this out.
The Crewel Work Company is a venture by Phillippa Turnbull and you can see her video collection here. I may be prejudiced (I learned crewel embroidery before I learned needlepoint) but I think the skills used in crewel are very useful for needlepointers who love to embellish their work. If you have trouble with French knots, for example, Phillippa demonstrates how to make them. If you ever wanted to use fly stitch for bird feathers, watch her video first.
https://www.crewelwork.com/pages/videos
The EGA brochure is called "A Little Book of Embroidery Basics." It really does cover the basics, from keeping your hands clean to learning how to start/end a thread. If you want a refresher course, or just because you are learning, this is a great place to orient yourself before your next stitching project.
http://www.egausa.org/images/Resources/LittleBook_8x5_2016.pdf
And of course if you need a break from Holiday Madness, a good little book or a good little movie is the perfect thing to enjoy!
