Monthly Club News Report

Fans of Needle Deeva's monthly clubs will be excited to see the latest of the Fabulous Fir trees models is finished. I am intriqued by the background stitches Vicky DeAngelis choose for this one.  This series will be available starting in August from your local shop if they signed up for it with the Deeva herself.

UPDATE: Another fur, a gingerbread one this time.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/05/16/the-latest-in-the-fab-firs/

Fireside Stitchery has some terrific clubs available.  You can either choose Currently Active or Starting Soon to see what wonders will be available.  DO NOT miss Queen of the Sea under Currently Active--it's a beauty!  The companion piece Nepture (both canvases are from Debbie Mumm/Melissa Shirley) is hiding under Starting Soon.  I've gotten glimpses of several of the finished Trick or Treat canvases from Debbie Mumm which will start soon.  Trust me, they are fabulous as well.

Beach Time with Sandy

Last weekend Bedecked and Beaddazzled had Sandy Arthur (the author of those cool Shapes in Needlepoint books) over to teach a class.   Doesn't that look like fun!?!

The Jimmy Fund

If you haven't lived in Boston, you probably haven't heard of the Jimmy Fund, which raises money to understand and fight cancer. The Red Sox are big contributors, as are many other sports teams and lots of other businesses and private citizens in the Boston area.  Now our own Anne Stradal of ABS Designs has stitched a Fenway Park pillow that will be auctioned off in August to add more cash to the fight.
http://thecapestitcher.blogspot.com/2012/04/fenway-finale.html

If you happen to be around Boston in August when the radio telethon starts, please contribute.  After all, we want Anne's Fenway pillow to go for big bucks and we want cancer to be stamped out.

The Glamour Girl UPDATED

Pocito's Fingernails

I'm not the only person stitching the Day of the Dead canvases that decorate the upper left hand corner of Blog.  My friend Janet Moyer is stitching Pocito.  Janet has given Pocito a back story that in life she was a glamorous person and continues so in death, so Janet is adding bling to her canvas in a major way. The fingernails you see in the photo above are just one manifestation of this. (The others will be revealed later!)  Janet used glow in the dark orange Kreinik for the fingernails because there is so much red on the design already.  The fingers and other bones are stitched in Neon Rays+ glow in the dark white.

BeStitched has also stitched the Day of the Dead ladies.  If you have a Facebook account you will enjoy seeing their version of the lipstick for Belleza.

UPDATE:  BeStitched posted the same photo on their blog as on Facebook, just in case you couldn't see it at FB.

Let's Talk Finishing

How you finish a completed piece of needlepoint is always a question that faces us stitchers. Doesn't matter whether you did a counted piece, worked something entirely in basketweave, or embellished the heck out of a painted canvas, what to do with the finished piece is always a puzzle.  Of course finishing is predetermined if you already know you are making a rug, or as Barbara Elmore is doing, a model to display for your classes or at trade shows to sell your painted canvases.  As always, Barbara has fabulous finishing ideas for her canvases.
http://stitchpography.blogspot.com/2012/04/more-is-more-marie.html

One of the greatest resources for finishing ideas is your local shop, as Mary Agnes points out.  Don't forget to consult with them, and even more importantly, don't ignore their advice!

The Classic Thing: Needlepoint Rugs

Janet Perry just posted a link to an online article with lots of photos of needlepoint rugs.
http://www.nuts-about-needlepoint.com/how-to-decorate-with-a-needlepoint-rug

The direct link is here, just in case Janet's website article changes and the link disappears.
http://info.asmarainc.com/blog/bid/55004/14-Gorgeous-Rooms-How-to-Decorate-with-Needlepoint-Rugs-and-Red-Rugs

Rugs are one of the classic uses for needlepoint.  I know a rug is a huge commitment in time and materials, but these things are heirlooms that will last a very long time.  Why not start with a smaller piece, like one of Jan Fitzpatrick's fabulous classic rug designs?  She's currently working on a Chinese rug, but the chart for her Mosaic Rug, which is based on traditional Moroccan rug patterns, is now available (second link).
http://threadmedley.wordpress.com/2012/04/21/chinese-rug-progress-10/

http://threadmedley.wordpress.com/2012/04/22/mosaic-rug-instructions-now-available/

If you prefer the English floral patterns of Elizabeth Bradley, her kits are made so that you can mix and match center designs and borders to make the size of rug you prefer.  The second link shows the border and corner designs available, and how to purchase the corners and borders to get your size.

The classic Arts and Crafts rugs by Beth Russell are a set size, but very beautiful.

The Newest Thing

Designers are posting new things online again in a sort of preview of what's going to be available this summer. Let's start with EyeCandy's fabulous new pirate mermaid.  Doesn't that look like a fun stitch?!  Don't forget to scroll down and see the wonderful scissor fobs.  I can't decide whether I "need" a cat or a starfish one but those pastel owls are pretty durn wonderful, too.  What is your favorite?
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2012/04/spring-and-summer-preview.html

There's a cowgirl witch as well.
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2012/04/couple-of-characters.html

For the counted canvaswork enthusiast, Orna Willis has come up with a new colorways for her classic Midnight Garden piece.  I love the original but a black background isn't the easiest thing to stitch, so Midday Garden will suit those who prefer not going blind when stitching.  The new Contemporary Tartan piece is going to be a classic, in my opinion, while the Beader's Toolboxes are a fun treat for oneself or a friend.
http://ornadesign.blogspot.com/2012/04/new-colorways.html

Vicky's got a new Snap Tray.  The variety of these fabric trays that unsnap at the corners to lie flat for travel amaze me but really they are a fun organization touch for your stitching.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/04/21/green-your-world/

Pat Mazu has a new charted series out--Snacking. It's perfect for Halloween decorations.

Pat does wonderful mini stockings. You can see more of her designs, plus her finishing book, at the Stitches from the Heart website.

Painted Pony Designs has new travel ornaments for the adventuresome stitcher.
http://www.paintedponyneedlepoint.com/2012%20Ornaments.htm

They've also put all of their popular "dress forms" canvases up on their website.

Finally Sandy Grossman-Morris has posted a few of her new designs on her site.  Scottish ghosts?  How wonderful!  If you find these charming, too, there are links to her website and to her shop if you don't have a local shop to order for you.

How to Create Cleopatra's Hair

Earlier today, the pulled thread class at Ruth Schmuff's shop with an Egyptian theme got me off on a tangent. I had a lot of fun looking for painted canvases with Egypt-inspired themes. I also found this article (with two videos) on how to stitch Cleopatra's hair from Susan Roberts.  It covers everything from possible threads, how to braid the wig, and even ways to create the hair ornaments.

Horus, Egypt and Pulled Thread Patterns

Bedecked and Beaddazzled is offering a June class with Gail Washington on intermediate pulled thread design. Gail has created a portrait of the Egyptian god Horus in pulled thread patterns for your stitching pleasure.  Isn't it lovely?  All the class details are here.
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2012/04/egyptian-falcon-god-comes-to-bedecked.html

I'm a sucker for Egyptian design in needlepoint.  Of course we know that somewhere on Vicky DeAngelis' To Do list is Bastet from Tapestry Fair.  Don't miss the King Tut brick cover on the same page.  A little bird told me this canvas will be available with the corners squared off for those who want a framed mummy in their lives.

Silver Needle has a lovely little travel ornament celebrating the monuments of Egypt.

Denise DeRusha has an Egyptian "postcard."  Needle Works describes this as a fun exotic design and I think they are right.

If you are more interested in abstract patterns, how about this Amanda Lawford floral based on the lotus blossom?

Or Zecca's Lotus Squared?  You can get a Robin King stitch guide for this one.
http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com/2012/01/lotus-squared-by-zecca-ze-134.html

HP Designs has a wonderful portrait of a Pharaoh.
http://theneedleworks.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1541

Leigh Designs has a set of ornaments based on Egyptian themes.  Here's Seti.
http://store.needlenook.com/Leigh-Designs-Ornament-Seti-p34042.html

The rest of the designs (all based on Egyptian Pharaohs or gods) are on Leigh's website.
http://www.leighdesigns.com/Grp822x.html

Of course Cleopatra is the theme of many painted canvases.  Remember Melissa Shirley's Wild Women series?
http://www.amybunger.com/catalog/item/6289632/8701671.htm

Labors of Love has a Cleo with a matching frame.  Hubba-hubba!

There are probably more Egyptian-themed painted canvases but I've run out of time to hunt.  I hope you enjoy what I uncovered.

Guess Who Came By to Visit?

I was floored this morning to discover a Comment  by Manuel Salas left on yesterday's posting about Belleza's black dress.  Manuel Salas is the artist behind the Day of the Dead ladies that Tapestry Fair has reproduced on needlepoint canvas.  He said some very nice things, which were appreciated, and told me that more of his artwork can be seen on his Facebook page.  If you have a Facebook account, just type in "Manuel Salas" and he'll pop up.  Then you can click on his Photo albums and see a few photos of his work.  I think the photograph of Lupe is of the needlepoint version Peggi stitched in classes with Tony Minieri.

Here's the article with the comment, just so you don't have to hunt.  Isn't it amazing how the Internet brings people who ordinarily would never meet together?

Where to Get Floor Frames for Evertites?

Yesterday KL posted a comment on an older article here at Blog, one where I reviewed Evertite stretcher bars. Here's the link to the review.
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2009/11/evertites-review.html

The comment read in full, "Where to buy a floor frame to hold the Evertite while stitching?"  It's an ambiguous question.  Is KL asking me what shops sell floor frames?  Or is KL asking what floor frames are likely to be able to hold the heavier-than-usual Evertites?

Let's look at the second question first.  Evertites are heavier and thicker than the stretcher bars we normally see used with needlepoint canvas.  This video from Needlepoint Now magazine shows stretcher bars being assembled and a canvas attached to them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipGkBY_7cO0

Compare that video to this photographic essay on putting linen on Evertites and you can see that the Evertites are probably a third thicker.  They are at least twice as heavy, perhaps more.  I haven't weighed a set of comparable sizes but trust me, there is a big difference!
http://www.needlenthread.com/2008/07/evertite-stretcher-bar-frames-for.html

This means you need a floor frame that has a very stable base and that also has an adjustable clamp to grab any size stretcher bars, from the very skinny ones to Evertites.  I use the K's metal floor stand which has a clamp that works very well with Evertites.  But look at the base.  It is a metal plate.  I usually stitch with that plate under my chair leg for stability but what if you like to have your floor stand right in front of you instead of to the side?  K's has now created a wooden base that works with their metal stand to provide more stability and to accommodate those who just don't like the Big Foot metal plate type of stand.  K's also has a very stable wooden frames called the Ultimate Stitching Station and the Basic Stitching Station.  I've heard that you can get accessories called Universal Clamps that adjust to any size or type of frame and even will hold Q Snaps.  I have no personal experience with this type of frame, though.  You can see the K's metal stand with the Big Foot metal plate base, the new wooden frame base for the metal stand and the all wooden Ultimate Stitching Station at Stitcher's Paradise, which is a good place to buy floor frames.
http://www.stitchers-paradise.com/Stands/KsCreations.html

Stitcher's Paradise also has photographs of the Lowery floor stand on their site.  It is quite similar to the K's metal stand but the metal plate is larger and the clamp is slightly different.  Friends with Lowery floor stands rave about them, although I have not used this frame.  I'd appreciate anyone with Lowery/Evertites experience to let us know how well they work together in the comments.
http://www.stitchers-paradise.com/Stands/Lowery.html

It looks like the System Four (which is perfect for sitting in front of the stitcher's chair) has a very stable base.  I have not used this frame although I have friends who have it and love it.  The photographs on the Threadneedle Street website (this is a good place to buy floor frames, by the way) show the clamp holding Evertites, so it looks like the System Four will work.  I'd appreciate anyone with System Four/Evertites experience to let us know how well they work together in the comments.
http://www.threadneedlestreet.com/accessories.htm

Mary Corbet has done a review of the System Four which has lots of photographs of this stand in action.  Be sure you read all the comments at the bottom of the article if you are interested in getting a System Four.  Mary says she uses Evertites with her System Four all the time but you do need the "frame clamp" accessory.  Mary does embroidery, not much needlepoint, so she probably has a variety of heads to accommodate hoops and other non-stretcher bars.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2008/01/needlework-system-4-floor-stand-review.html

You might also be interested in hearing from a very happy customer of the System Four. I've posted the most about the System Fours, but I have to say I wouldn't trade my K's metal stand for any other.  It suits me best.
http://dianestakingtimeouttoneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2012/04/system-4-needlepoint-stand.html

KL, I hope all this answers your questions.  Please note that there are many frames I haven't mentioned that will work, but since a lot of them are not made by U.S. companies, I confined my comments to floor frames that are easily available to American needlepointers.

The Little Black Dress

Belleza's Dress
I've had several people tell me that they were dying to catch a new glimpse of Belleza, my Day of the Dead canvas I'm stitching for Tapestry Fair.  (Several other folks have asked me what on earth one does with a canvas like this once it is stitched, but for me it's the journey, not the end product and she is a model so Belleza's not really something that will live in CH for long.  She will go to Tapestry Fair and visit the trade shows, probably framed.)  This posting is for Belleza's fans.

If you look at the photos of Belleza (purple background) and her companion Pocito (green background) on the upper left corner, you'll see that Belleza wears a rather plain dress.  Pocito's is much fancier with lots of colors, but poor Belleza is wearing basic black if you ignore the lime and black arm trim and the orange/white/purple neck hole trim.  These outfits are called huipil, by the way.  They are a sort of sleeveless tunic.
http://stores.mexicantextileandcraft.com/Page.bok?template=theHuipil

I felt a little sorry for her having such a plain dress and decided I'd dress up the black area somehow to balance out the fancy floral headdress.  But how?  If you've ever stitched with black threads on black painted areas, you know how any fancy stitch disappears.  There isn't enough contrast for the stitch to show up. I decided my options were a) use another color than black and an open stitch to add texture and color; b) use a sparkly black thread and a stitch that would add texture to the huipil; or c) stick to plain black and a simple stitch like basketweave or interlocking gobelin for the dress and let her necklace dominate the area.

I ruled out c) immediately as I wanted to fancy up the area some.  Since there is orange and white and purple and lime green trim on the dress I decided I'd not go with a), either.  There were too many colors I had to make nice with.  That left b) a sparkly black thread.

The Pavilions With a Few Beads Added

I choose to use Silk Lame Braid and a simple modified pavilion stitch for the dress.  Pavilions are diamond-shaped stitches and that shape is roughly the shape of her necklace, so I thought it was appropriate.  You can't really see the stitch shape well in the photograph but it is a diamond with the bottom point empty.  I put a bead there.  I actually used the purple beads in the photo above just because they'd show up well in the stitch guide photo to explain what I was doing but I liked the light lilac shade so well that I ended up beading the entire dress with them.

Hope you like it as much as I do!

Major Update to Loretta Spears Blog

Thanks to GE and her husband, I've been able to add photographs of cover pages for twelve of the fourteen Loretta Spears mystery charts to the Loretta Spears blog.  Besides the intrinsic interest of seeing how Loretta's mystery cover pages changed (and didn't change) over the years she published mystery designs, we finally have a good idea of what all the covers should look like.  I hope this will help cut down on copies being sold on eBay as originals.  As far as I can judge, this doesn't happen often but anything we can do to prevent forgeries is a good thing.  Here's the link.  Have fun browsing Loretta's amazing counted canvaswork designs!

Ruth Is Bubbly Today

Ruth Schmuff has posted the latest mystery class photos on her blog. She's doing a pear collage design for shop students. Her long distance students will have their class lesson mailed to them.  Ruth waits to make sure that nothing comes up in class that she didn't make totally clear before shipping off the latest installment to those who can't come to class in person.

It is a quiet piece, very green and calm and so far the stitches have been fascinating.  Check out how Ruth uses the same thread and number of plies but two different stitches to achieve distance.

Whenever I run out of ideas I just browse the photos on Ruth's website.  Almost always she sparks an idea.  Very creative lady, Ruth!

In her latest blog posting, Vicky DeAngelis talks about bead boards, which I've never heard of.  I guess the next time I visit The Potomac Beading Company I'll ask about them.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/04/14/bead-on/

UPDATE:  Here is the Bead Board website, thanks Ceil who says the 6x6 inch size is no longer available. She goes on to say that the bead boards are only available at a few placed.  She's talked to the woman making them and ordered one, which arrived 2-3 days later.  There are fabric choices and Ceil says when you use seed beads, shaking the board turns the beads all side up making them easier to string.

Introducing Kristine

I just ran into Kristine Kingston on Facebook. Kristin writes custom stitch guides, paints custom canvases, and does finishing. Her company name is Baltimore Needleworks and you can see some of her work on her website.
http://www.baltimoreneedleworks.com./galleries.html

Judging from the photos, Kristine's work is clean and crisp, not "over the top" finishing.  If that's your style, too, and you need a finisher, the website has contact information so you can talk things over with Kristine and get an estimate of just what you need done.

Kristine has started a blog.  It looks like it is going to be a fun one so I've added it to the blog list down at the bottom of the page and to my personal blog reader, too.
http://baltimoreneedleworks.wordpress.com/

Can't wait to see what you do next, Kristine!

Barcelona

Leigh's smaller version of Barcelona
When you write stitch guides based on models you stitch for designers, the newest things are constantly arriving at your door to be stitched for the next trade show.  A blast of sunshine and hot weather arrived last week in Chilly Hollow, followed soon by the UPS man delivering my latest project--Barcelona.  This is from Leigh Design's ESPANA series, a set of designs based on Spain and named after Spanish cities.  You can see these new designs, introduced at the Dallas trade show last month, on Leigh's website.
http://www.leighdesigns.com/Grp624x.html

If you compare my Barcelona to the one on the website you'll notice differences.  Leigh has revealed the 10x10 versions already but the smaller 6x6 versions aren't out yet.  They will be like my "baby" Barcelona--smaller versions with the elements from its big sister rearranged and simplified for those who want something a bit smaller and quicker.  Regardless of whether the ESPANA piece is 10 inches square or only six, both are on 18 count sunshine yellow canvas.

These are sunny pieces overlaid with gray and black lace.  Think lace mantillas, flowers and sun. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this yet but I'll have to hurry.  Columbus is only about 8 weeks away!

Chandail to Remain Open!

Very good news! Despite the relocation of Chandail's owner to Colorado this summer, the shop will stay open under a new owner. Ada Hayden of Eye Candy repeats the good news on her blog.

Is Chaparral the Oldest Needlepoint Shop?

I'm told Chaparral Needlework opened on April 1st, 1962, which makes it 50 years old.  They are going to have an open house next Thursday, April 26th, to celebrate.  They are posting photographs of their five founders on their Facebook page.  If you have an account, search for "Chaparral Needlework" and look in their photo albums.
http://www.ndlpt.com/

I think they might be the oldest continuously operated needlepoint store in the United States. Can any other shop top 50 years?

Serendipitous Bob

Associated Talents' Skeletor
Yesterday I posted a photo of the Associated Talents Halloween skull piece that I call Bob.  Bob is stitched with a lot of Petite Silk Lame Braid (the two purples, the two oranges, the silver and gold) and also with some green overdyed Kreinik, black Splendor silk and the white Neon Rays Plus that glows in the dark.  I stitched Bob's eyes as Smyrna Crosses using my Neon Rays Plus, thinking that I would bury a tiny black bead in the slope of each Smyrna for his pupil.

If you aren't familiar with the Smyrna Cross, here's how they are done.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXIDhShvm88

The size of the X covered with a + can vary to cover the space needed.

This stitch ends up being higher in the middle, so I discovered my idea of using a bead on the side of the Smyrna Cross wouldn't work.  The bead just wouldn't stay where it was added, no matter how many times I stitched through the hole.  I tried different shapes of beads (round, hex) and different sizes (both 11/0 and the smaller 14/0) but nothing worked.  The day before, I'd found a tiny red sequin on the carpet so I got it out of my tool tray and plopped it on one of Bob's eyes.  To my surprise the 2mm size and the red color were perfect.  Serendipity worked in Bob's favor very well.

I probably should have taken out the Smyrna Crosses and tent stitched his eyes but I sort of like the raucous angle the sequins tilt in.  Makes Bob look a bit like his eyes are sending a red light out into the world.

The moral of the story is to not discount chance and luck when it comes to choosing threads, stitches or attachments for your needlepoint masterpieces.

So, What Has Jane Been Stitching?

Associated Talent's Skeletor
Sadly, the answer to that question is Not Much. I have a deadline for Belleza and the same deadline for a second small piece that came in the mail this week and there's a custom stitch guide I should be doing, but March was hectic with a two week trip to visit my husband's family, which involved the same amount of planning and luggage that one takes on a climb up Mt. Everest.  Belleza was too large to go with us, so I took a small Associated Talents ornament which is called Skeletor as my travel project.  There are a series of these small (two and a half inch square roughly) Halloween ornaments which are a quick and fun stitch.
http://www.atneedlepoint.com/CanvasLookup.asp?Category=Halloween&SubCategory=Ornaments&QueryPage=1

When we came back from our trip, of course everything had to be caught up on but as soon as that was accomplished, my mother had another mini stroke so I packed again and went to see her, again without Belleza (who is probably feeling neglected, poor thing).  When I got home, I came down with a bad cold complicated by the historically high levels of tree pollen in Chilly Hollow.  I have been sick ever since, coughing and blowing my nose, and sleeping whenever I could.  So I have not stitched much in a month.  Hopefully that is about to change.

I did manage to finish stitching Skeletor, whom I named Bob.  That's him above.  He is a sweetie and will make a fabulous flat ornament when I have time to find a good backing fabric.  But for now he's going back into a drawer to stay safe until I have much more done on Belleza.

Turns out Beth Lebhar of Beth's Needlepoint Nook has done a stitch guide for this piece as well.  Beth tells me it took thirty pages to write down everything but the end result is worth it, don't you think?  She said she never got bored working this piece.

When You Need a Getaway

I'm sure there are times in everyone's life when they'd just love to run away for a weekend spent with their needles. Somewhere nice with good food where you can wear your PJs the whole weekend if you want and never ever get out of bed until you are ready. If that sound like something you want to do, then you need to gather up a group of like-minded friends and hire Gina to create a special retreat just for you.

Jolly Nutcrackers Mystery Classes UPDATED

dede's Jolly Nutcrackers
The Needle Bug's latest newsletter announced their first mystery class, a three lesson session with Julia Snyder. The canvas for the class is dede Odgen's Jolly Nutcrackers which you see above. Each lesson costs $265 which includes the cost of the canvas, the stitch guide and all the threads.  The first class is in May and mail order participation is possible in case you can't make it to Montgomery, Alabama this summer.  There are no details up on their website yet but if you are as charmed by this canvas as I am, you'll want to make inquiries of the Needle Bug staff.

UPDATE:  Needle Bug published more info about this class on their blog this morning.  (File that under Great Minds Think Alike.  LOL)

Framing

These days we create fewer pillows and chair seats, and more purses and framed items. A good framer is always hard to find, so I've been watching New Creation Framing (in Pasadena, California) on Facebook for a while. They post photographs of their finished pieces at their FB account. Lots of what they frame are stitched items, so drop by and talk to them if you live in the area.  I can't tell you anything about customer satisfaction, cost, or how long a framing job takes, but their website is worth a visit.  When you look at the folks who use them, it's an impressive client list from a stitching standpoint.

New Counted Charts and Classes

If you love counted canvaswork or geometric patterns, I've got a double treat for you this morning--a new Laura Perin cyberclass and a new Threedles design.  Let's start with Kurdy Briggs (Threedles) who has a new chart available.  The design is called Sands of Time.  You can see it on the Scarlet Thread website in three colorways.  I think the sage green one's my favorite but check all the colors.   The jeweled "Calypso" colorway shows the patterns better in my opinion.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2012/04/shifting-sands.html

Laura Perin's next cyberclass which is called Fleur-de-Lis is going to be based on irises.  You can choose either the blue or purple colorway for the class, although this will be very pretty in many colors.  After all, irises come in a multitude of color mixes!
http://two-handedstitcher.blogspot.com/2012/04/new-cyber-class.html

This class starts in early June.  Check Laura's website for more information.

Monthly Club News

Needle Works has posted photos of the circus elephant canvases for their club that starts in June.  One is stitched.  I can't wait to see it made up!  I think the canvases are from Labors of Love but I am not sure.

Holiday Stitching by the Experts

Holiday stitching never seems to go out of style. Ruth Schmuff just finished stitching (with help from Brenda Hart and her mother) one of the Michael Stoebner canvases that her company distributes.  It's the Easter Bunny, caught in mid-run, carrying flowers and a basket to some lucky little boy or girl.  Ruth shows off an easy silk ribbon flower technique in her article about Mr. Buns.  He is about the cutest bunny I've seen this year, from his fluffy tail to his pink crystal nose!
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2012/04/hippity-hop.html

Robin King is showing off the new monthly club series she's going to be stitching for Needle Deeva--pastel sugar Skulls for the Day of the Dead celebrations!  Naturally, being Robin, she is going to accessorize her stitching with Day of the Dead magnets and snap trays for her tools.  If you like something a bit edgy or just want to celebrate Halloween in the springtime, you will enjoy all of these goodies for Dia de los Muertos.

The Millenium Frames and Necessarie Floor Stands

I've heard quite a bit about Millenium frames from friends in the UK, but didn't know much about the company behind the wooden frames and floor stands.  I didn't even know that their name was Needle Needs, so I'd never visited their website.  Fortunately, the Unbroken Thread has visited their manufacturing facility and shows off the process behind making their products.
http://www.theunbrokenthread.com/blog/2012/04/08/needle-needs/

Here is their website.  It has lots of videos and help for using their products.
http://www.needleneeds.co.uk/store/

This is a company in England, mind, so it might not be the easiest frame to purchase but everyone seems to like their pieces.  If a wooden frame that expands by turning the large wooden screws is what you are looking for, this is the frame for you.  I was particularly interested to see that it works well for taller stitchers.

Updates and Why They Matter

I hate to do two software-related postings in one week (it's a boring topic), but this is important news for those with iPads who also have the Stitch Landscape book.  The author has done an upgrade for the book that will make it easier to read on iPads.
http://melitastitches4fun.wordpress.com/2012/03/31/sky-23-stitch-landscape-itunes-update/

But of course you have to update your software periodically.  Apparently if you have an iPad, you plug it into your Macintosh and the Mac handles the upgrades for you, including this one. I'd urge everyone to keep on top of the upgrades that are available.  They make things work better by removing bugs and it protects your computer as well because a lot of upgrades are security-related.  I know upgrading the PC can be a nightmare (my husband has a fancy Windows 7 machine that always has to be reset after an upgrade) but Mac and iPad upgrades are much easier.  I actually check for upgrades on my Mac and iPod Touch each morning and if one is available, I download it.  You don't have to be so fanatical about this, of course.

Just keep an eye out for updates and things will work better, I promise.

Liz and the Mad Miters

Sounds like a rock band, doesn't it?  Mad Miters is actually the name of a bargello cyberclass Liz Morrow is going to teach for Cyberpointers, the online chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild.  Liz's little article shows Mad Miters and has a link to information about the class.
http://lizartblog.blogspot.com/2012/04/mad-miters-again-again.html

It's my understanding that you don't have to be a member of ANG or of their Cyberpointers Chapter to take the class, but your class fee is smaller if you belong to ANG and smaller still if you are a Cyberpointers member.

Bargello Samplers: A Review

Finger Step Designs has released a new project book called "Bargello Samplers: Fun With Upright Stitches", and in this article on her website, Janet Perry reviews it.

Candyland: The Bolster

Ruth Schmuff has posted a photograph of her Candyland mystery class piece, fresh from the finisher.  This is a Eye Candy canvas and it turned out so well, Ruth is using another Eye Candy design for her summer mystery class.

If you belong to Facebook, you can see another spectacular finish of this piece done by West Coast Finishing.  Just find them via a search and look in the Wall Photos album.

Blogger About to Change

Google's Blogger software for creating blogs (like mine) is about to change their format. Sometime in April everyone will be forced onto the new system. That's the problem of software--when the developers decide to "improve" things, you have no choice except to figure out how to cope with the new system.  Here's a bit about it--
http://buzz.blogger.com/2012/04/moving-to-new-blogger-interface.html

I've been using it for several months for the Loretta Spears Blog and find it harder to use than the old system, but that has no effect on the developers.  As long as they like it better, the rest of us have to fall in line or move our blogs to a new template like WordPress (which I also don't like).  So I bit the bullet and switched one blog over at Christmas.  It is not as easy to read (but all developers are under 35 and don't have eye problems) and the functions are spread out all over and hard to find initially.   It also wants us to use Google Plus (which I could care less about) and works as a blog reader (I prefer Google Reader so I ignore all the postings it automatically generates).  I would prefer that they fix widgets I could use (like Google Translate) that are currently broken.  The Loretta Spears Blog has a great deal of traffic from Europe, South Africa, South America and Russia, so a translation system would be a nice feature.  None of the available ones work with Blogger right now, though.

Warning:  once you click on Learn More on your old blog, you are switched to the new system and there's no going back, at least that I can find.  Not that this matters--we all are going to be switched automatically sometime this month anyway.  Consider this fair warning.  It'll take you a few days to get oriented, so get some postings ready to go under the old system, then make the switch and learn how to do this.  I did.  I didn't like it but it didn't kill me, either.

I could cheerfully yell at some Blogger developers, though.
