The 24 Days of Christmas Are Starting UPDATED

Sheena has decided to do a fun Advent Calendar-type giveaway on her blog starting December 1. It's the twenty-four days of Christmas, folks!  There is a prize each day for the first person to answer Sheena's question correctly.   This starts December 1, which is tomorrow.  Hopefully it will cheer your countdown until December 25!

UPDATE:  Sheena has a great idea for using your extra needle magnets on an Advent tray.

Scissor Envy

Mary Agens shows off her embroidery scissors.  It got me thinking about my scissors.   I have 6-8 pairs, mostly gifts, but I have two that I adore.  They are Japanese made with fake tortoise shell handles and are as sharp as whiz.  One size is a bit smaller than the other.  I hoard them like gold and keep them in my tool case instead of using them.  Silly me, but I can't bear losing one of having them become dull with use!  Wish I knew who made them.

The Newest in Counted Canvaswork

Fans of counted needlepoint have cause to rejoice!   Laura Perin has just released a new set of four Christmas ornament designs called "Jewel Ornaments."   These are in shades of red and green, but not quite the traditional Christmas reds and greens.  However, you can stitch them in any colors you prefer.
http://two-handedstitcher.blogspot.com/2012/11/counted-jewels.html

If you are curious about Laura's other two Holiday Ornaments sets, here is Holiday Ornaments #1, based on traditional quilt patterns.

Here is Holiday Ornaments #2, which I couldn't find on Laura's website.  This also uses quilt patterns.

On the other hand, if you love Bargello and counted, then Liz Morrow has answered your prayers.  She has a new design, so new it doesn't have a name yet.  As usual, she plans to do other colors as she refines the instructions for this new beauty.  Stitch faster, Liz!

A Mystery for November

Laura Perin has posted still another Monday Mini Mystery on her blog. Here is the first lesson. As the others appear each Monday, I'll add them to the list.

Just in Time for Christmas

There are more new things to talk about in the stitching-blog world, and with Christmas coming, some of these might need to go on your list for Santa. Needle in a Haystack has short blurbs about some new books they have in stock. Personally, I would love to see the Embroidered Portraits book under my tree. Jan Messent is well known in the embroidery world so this is definitely going to be an interesting book for those who love stitched faces and clothing.
http://needlestack.typepad.com/whats_new/2012/11/new-book-arrivals.html

The recent power outages (we've had three in the last year that lasted from 4 hours to five days here in CH) have us all thinking battery powered lights. Vicky shows off a battery or USB powered light that is also great for travel. By coincidence Quail Run has this very light on their website so I included both links to give you more information if you are interested.

Accoutrement Designs has announced a new partnership with Norden Crafts, which will bring some of their magnets to shops via Norden.  This means a broader range of shops will carry their work, which is good news for us all.  Congratulations!

Ruth Schmuff's shop has all sorts of holiday snap trays and project bags.

Speaking of magnets, Pocket Full of Stitches has new ones in stock.  I think these are fabric or paper patterns showing through the clear acrylic but I'm not certain.

Reviews

Personally I hate buying things sight unseen. Given my isolated location, this means I rarely purchase the latest book or tool or whatever until it has been out a while and all my friends tell me this is a Must Have.   Fortunately, I have a LOT of friends!

Linda of Stitching Sisters picked up her grandson's Christmas Santa ornament (so cute!) at her local and splurged on Kelly Clark's stumpwork sampler canvas and instructions booklet at the same time.  I think this is a kit, so you can't buy just the booklet.  The canvas shows various motifs and the booklet shows you how Kelly creates stumpwork for each section.  This is perfect if you want to try stumpwork on a painted canvas, learn something new and then recreate the techniques somewhere else.  I've been dying to see this, so the photos are very helpful in evaluating whether I want to splurge.
http://nystitchingsisters.blogspot.com/2012/11/finishing-and-stash-enhancement.html

To add to the information Linda posted, here is Kelly's finished sampler and (second link) her instructions for creating an amazing goldfish.  She makes it look easy!

http://kellyclarkneedlepointhandbook.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-koi-and-turkey-preview.html

On another topic entirely, Inspirations magazine is well known to embroiders for its wonderful and varied projects.  It is now available in eBook form for those with electronic devices that run Android or iOS software.  Here's Mary Corbet's review.  Looks like it works for every flavor of device, too.  (Kindles can't run every Android app even though they are an Android device, for example.)  However, you should be aware Mary uses Macs so she only tested how it works on those.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2012/11/inspirations-magazine-e-readers.html

This makes me happy as it means the magazine is more widely available, which is important to folks like me who can't buy an individual copy of the magazine except via mail order.  It also makes me a little sad as the real thing has just taken one more step down the road of digital content only.  Progress is a two-edged sword, isn't it?

The Alligator Comes for Christmas

Jude Designs' Christmas Alligator
It is pretty hectic here in Chilly Hollow as we try to finish some renovations before company arrives for the holidays, but I have gotten a bit done on the small Christmas Alligator ornament from Jude Designs. Here you see the background almost finished and his red stocking cap finished except for the white fur trim.  For the background I decided to use Double Cross, a stitch Vicky DeAngelis talked about on her blog.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/its-all-about-the-finish-part-2/

I used Double Stitch on my Cat Topiary Garden for sone of the evergreens and it is a beautiful stitch. However, it is a thread hog and I ran out of the 18 count size of ecru Silk Lame Braid # SL03 I was using for the big crosses.  That's why I worked on the stocking cap before finishing the background while I waited for an emergency shipment of Silk Lame Braid.

By the way, step two of Double Stitch is the tiny cross stitches.  They are in a similar color in Impressions (#1146) but because of the difference in textures, the Double Stitch has some depth and interest to it, besides having the sparkle of Silk Lame Braid.  I like having a lot of metallics on Christmas ornaments to help them stand out among all the other Christmas decorations.  One thing I didn't notice until I did the scan for this posting was the loop of thread laying on top of the red stocking cap above the alligator's left eye.  This is a bit of the metallic from the Silk Lame Braid which untwists itself as you stitch.  I use short lengths of thread to minimize this, but you can still have something stick up at the end of a length of thread if you aren't careful.  Interestingly, I don't have this problem with the smaller Petite Silk Lame Braid, perhaps because the twist is tighter.

In the photo the right half of the background has the tiny cross stitches added but I haven't gotten to the left half yet.  I also still need to do the background between the tail and the head but I ran out of steam last night and went to bed.

The stocking cap is done in the new shaded Petite Very Velvet.  Rainbow Gallery shows off the colors of regular shaded Very Velvet in the link below so you can get an idea of the colors available.  Sorry but I couldn't find an online color card for the Petite shaded.    I am using V810, which seems to be similar to the regular Very Velvet's Holiday Reds.  I used Interlocking Goblein which is done in horizontal rows and allowed the colors to fall where they wished.
http://www.rainbowgallery.com/detail.cfm?ID=1251

Once I finish the background, I plan to use Don Lynch's basketweave beading technique on the blue Christmas ornament.  While I run around like a maniac, getting ready for Christmas, you can wander over to Don's website at Associated Talents and see how he does basketweave beading.

The Needlepointer's Finishing Newsletter

Periodically, The Needlepointer sends out an e-newletter showcasing finishing they do for customers. This is always fun to see since the canvases are usually new to me and the finishing is very well done.
http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=2b1a4dafdf1ba6e29e773aa79&id=ac1a36fe56&e=73961ee0ea

You can sign up for their newletters on their home page.  They often do a daily newsletter about their current trunk show and there is a regular monthly newsletter, too.  In other words, if you don't like getting lots of e-newsletters, don't sign up, but if you love shop newsletters with themes, this is the shop you want to follow.

Taking An Idea and Running With It

It doesn't matter if you are Halloween crazy like Ada of Eye Candy is or not, you'll want to see her take on a collage design created by Susan Kerndt.  Create a grid, add ribbons and fabric inside some of the boxes, stitch inside others, toss in some buttons and beads and there you go--Happy Halloween!
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2012/11/just-little-more-halloween.html

You can see more of Susan Kerndt's Stitching Kreations here.
http://www.caron-net.com/designerfiles/desaprilfiles/desapril.html

I particularly like Floral Fantasy.  I think most of Susan's work is for the classroom but occasionally you can find a chart from her.
http://mystitchinggallery.blogspot.com/2011/03/floral-fantasy-susan-t-kerndt-designer.html

This is a very interesting way of creating something by using what you have been collecting or have left over to make an original design.  Way to go, Ada!

Let's Talk Finishing Books UPDATED

Marianne at New Needlepoint asked about finishing books at the Needlepoint Group on Facebook as she was considering whether to add Pat Mazu's finishing book to her online bookstore.   Apparently it was a good choice as she has been selling them like hotcakes!  Marianne stocks the classic Sandy Higgins finishing book as well as an out of print finishing book by Katharine Ireyss.
http://www.newneedlepoint.com/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=&keywords=finishing

UPDATE:   Michele at Bristly Thistle added in the Comments below that although Amazon.com stocks Sandy Higgins' Sandy's Finishing Touches:  A Step-by-Step Guide to Finishing Needlework, they have the 2008 edition.  Most needlework shops have the later 2010 edition.  Thanks, Michele!

I have used Summer Louise's finishing tips which makes me think her books would be very helpful.
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2012_10_09_archive.html

I've also used The Needlepoint Doctor for finishing ideas for odder items.  This is an out of print book so you'll have to use Marianne or other used book sellers to find it.
http://www.newneedlepoint.com/content-product_info/product_id-2435/the_needlework_doctor_by_mary_kay_davis.html

Pat's book can also be found at Stitches from the Heart who also sell her charts.  Sandy's Finishing Touches from Mrs. Higgins used to be available from her website which is gone but you can find it a lot of places now, from Nordic Needle to Marianne's shop to Amazon.com.

Anyone know of any other good finishing books, either out of print or new?

Clever Ideas Shared

I've been collecting clever ideas this week from all the blogs I read. Ready to be amazed? First up, Brenda Hart taught Vicky how to cleverly create handles for What's the Point tote bag ornaments with rushed River Silks ribbon.  The second link has more information about the background stitches and shows off the inside of the totes better.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/its-all-about-the-finish/

http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/its-all-about-the-finish-part-2/

If you need some tote bag ornaments for your tree, here's the website.  These are from Linda Lahm, by the way.
http://www.whatsthepoint.biz/lindalahm.cfm

Anne has a very clever (and easy to compensate) stitch for the background behind her penguin.  I especially love that she used a white metallic to simulate sparkling snow!
http://thecapestitcher.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-background-for-pete.html

The penguin is one of Anne's designs.  The others from the Penguins on Parade series are on her website.

Needle Nicely just repurposed a Christmas stocking by removing the name at the top and refinishing it so that it would work as a fundraiser.  Anyone who needs to remove a name on their stocking, take note that many finishers say this is a tricky business.

The Helen Ashland House Challenge

ANG's cyber chapter is mostly focused on charted or counted work, which is natural given that their members meet online only. It's a bit hard to do painted canvases together, and of course painted canvases are more expensive than chart packages.  It's still fun to hear about what they get up to.  I think you'll enjoy seeing the house challenge that Melita finished and describes on her blog.

Two Fun Christmas Projects

Suzanne has posted two fun Christmas pieces on her blog that I thought were perfect for Black Friday, the day when we start to realize just how close Christmas is.  Her point about giving away our precious stitching is important, too.

Finishing Tips

Summer Louise has an important finishing tip for those who plan to bead a piece that will be blocked later.
http://summerlouise.blogspot.com/2012/10/catherine-coleman-january-ornament.html

She also tells you a great place to find cording fibers if you make your own twisted cord.
http://summerlouise.blogspot.com/2012/11/believe-by-madeline-lake-santa-ornament.html

But the best tip comes from Needle Nicely who has great advice for stitchers who are contemplating buying a piece that they won't finish themselves--talk to your shop in detail before you buy!

Thankfulness

Jude Designs' Christmas Alligator
It's the week of Thanksgiving here in the United States and stitchers who blog are posting about what they are grateful for in their lives.  Diane's thankful for finished pieces and new designs and especially grateful for her family as she hobbles around on a broken ankle.
http://dianestakingtimeouttoneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2012/11/so-much-to-be-thankful-for.html

Melinda's grateful for her family and Gives Thanks in a special way.
http://melindaslivingthegoodlife.blogspot.com/2012/11/give-thanks.html

Me, I am immersed in Christmas prep.  For the first time ever the grandkids will be here Christmas morning.  I have been spring cleaning since early October when we learned they were coming.  We are also trying to finish renovation projects we started before we knew we'd have company.  I've refinished three pieces of furniture and have three-four more to do before 12/25.  All this means I have been too busy to stitch on my Day of the Dead lady.  She's put safely away in a closet while I paint various areas of the house.  That doesn't mean I am not stitching at all.  I pulled out this darling Christmas ornament form Jude Designs to keep me company evenings after I collapse from a day's physical labor.  I don't have to document what I stitch in a guide and I don't have to make it perfect.  This is just for my entertainment and relaxation.  Here's Jude's website.  I love her Cajun and New Orleans designs!
http://www.spicyneedlepoint.com

The Christmas alligator is on 18 count canvas.  I drew a four inch circle around the animal to mark off the background I will stitch.  You might see the blue lines in the above photo if you squint.

Stitching the Christmas 'gator also keeps my mind off Beloved, who decided to replace the toilet in the main floor bathroom before company arrived.  You guessed it--the little half bath we use more than any other is now gutted after he discovered a leak and had to remove the vinyl flooring and replace some of the subflooring.   I will be priming those walls after a short Thanksgiving trip to see my mother.  The new vanity sink will arrive this week.  I have no idea where we'll put it while Beloved tiles the bathroom floor but I suppose we'll think of something.  He also plans a drop ceiling and new lights and of course the baseboard had to be torn out and will be replaced after the floor is tiled.

Beloved would also like to replace the kitchen sink.  Over my dead body.

But despite all the work, I am grateful his family is coming to visit.  Anyone want to clean out another kitchen cabinet while I sand that new chest of drawers?  If you prefer you can wax the double rocker and the dogs both need a good brushing before I bathe them....

Basketweave Versus Continental?

Kimberly takes up the eternal question--when do you use basketweave instead of continental (or vice versa).
http://akimberlydesign.blogspot.com/2012/10/sharing.html

Personally I use continental when the row is just one stitch high or when I'm running out of thread.  Otherwise I am basketweave all the way.  How about you?

One of the customers at Quail Run answered the question with basketweave beautifully!

Traveling with Santa

I write Blog articles way ahead of time, especially during the fall when I am usually very busy with holiday plans and getting the outside chores done before winter. That means Robin has been home from her teaching trip to Needle Bug in Montgomery quite a while but this is still a great time to publish her write-up since we are all looking for easy and tasty holiday treats to make and unusual Christmas ornaments to stitch. Robin has both!  The Leigh Miller canvases are exclusive to the Needle Bug so stock up now before they run out and decide not to reissue.

Perfect Painted Canvases for the Beginner

I'm sure you are familiar with Barbara Bergsten's cheerful designs. After all, I've posted about her work often, reently showcasing the charming roly poly Santa Stitches set...

...each of which was designed to teach a different decorative stitch.  Here's Santa Stitches Four, which uses Stairstep stitches.
http://createneedlepoint.typepad.com/create_needlepoint/2012/11/santa-stitches-needlepoint-off-to-the-finishers.html

Barbara just added a little bit about her design philosophy and beginning stitchers on her blog.

If you are a shop looking for a beginner's project to teach, this is the place.  You can even find stitch guides and lovely stitch diagrams for many of Barbara's designs on her website, free to download.

Barbara has certainly done her part to encourage beginners.  What have you done today?

Let's Go Somewhere

Fall is always the retreat season, isn't it?  Lots of folks have been going places with their stitching to do more stitching in a classroom setting when they arrive.  Tisha went on a Margaret Bendig retreat.
http://stitchplaywithneedlepointtooltime.blogspot.com/2012/11/needlepoint-retreat.html

Margaret is famous for her kimono patterns.
http://www.sang-ega.org/margaret%20bendig%20workshop.html

But that isn't everything Margaret designs.  How about this charming patriotic heart?
http://stitchlady.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/stars-abound/

Or this Southwestern sampler from Needlepoint Now magazine?  It might take some hunting to find Margaret's designs as many as class projects only but you won't be sorry you spent time looking.
http://lets-stitch-away.blogspot.com/2008/01/southwest-sampler-by-margaret-bending.html

Teachers travel to these retreats as well.  Hazel Blomkamp went from her native South Africa to Russia.  You will find her report a fascinating window into a place that is home to a great many stitchers.  (Did you know the second largest number of visitors to the Loretta Spears blog I maintain log in from Russia and the Ukraine?  There are a LOT of counted thread canvasworkers there.)
http://therebelliousneedlewoman.blogspot.com/2012/11/hazel-and-di-inrussia-and-ukraine.html

Barbara Elmore just got back from the Santa Fe Enchantment EGA Seminar.   She taught two classes.  In one they stitched a white cactus plant, in the other a white moth.  Boring?  Now quite.  Barbara has you paint the canvas after stitching it, stencil it, use markers on it, add beads and sequins and metallics and ribbons and lots more to it.  You'll love the photographs of the white moths' rebirth into something totally unique to each stitcher.  My only quibble is that Barbara forgot to take photographs of the cactus canvases blooming!
http://stitchpography.blogspot.com/2012/11/santa-fe-enchantment.html

If you are like me and go three places:  the post office, bank and grocery store, these reports are priceless.  Many thanks to everyone for sharing the flavor of their retreats with us.

Beautiful Handmade Needlepoint Frames

Someone on Facebook's Needlepoint Group mentioned watching a 1940s movie that had as props needlepoint being stitched in an elaborate wooden floor stand. That got me searching to see who makes needlepoint frames these days and I stumbled across this website.

I know nothing about the quality of the stands or the customer service of the site owners but they sure are lovely!

Great Ideas

Stitchers are constantly giving me great ideas that they generously share via their blogs.  I have a great collection of ideas this week, so pay attention class!  You'll need to take notes for the next time you want to use turkey work. Suzanne's blows me out of the water.  To see the finished Santa, click on her blog title to go to the Home page, then scroll down the page a bit.

Fingers are hard to stitch.  Lots of folks use bullions, but I think they make creepy fingers personally.  I usually fall back on tent stitches for my fingers, but no more!  Now I know to use beads to make realistic gloves, thanks to Amy Bunger and Jane.

Check out the wonderful mustache and sash that Mary Agnes is stitching!

Need to stitch shoes?  Ruth has added ribbon, Swarkovski pearls, metallic threads of several kinds and beads to her heels.  Your shoes may not be so over-the-top, but even one of these ideas will dress up a pair.

Suzanne knit her snowman's scarf.  If you know how to knit, this is a fun addition to any snowman canvas.
http://suzannehicks.blogspot.com/2012/10/hook-em-horns.html

I'm always struggling to come up with fur stitches for animals that are anything except long and short.  Don't get me wrong--I love long and short stitches--but a lot of people are afraid of them so when I write a stitch guide, I need something easy and fast that looks great that isn't long and short.  Not to worry, Brenda Hart has solved the problem!
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2012/10/birdy-cat-hotel.html

Heard of any great ideas this week?  Post them in the comments section below this article or email me at chilly hollowat hotmail dotcom and I'll post for you.

Dead with Comments

Earlier this week I got an email from a stitching blog reader who would love to leave comments for all the blogs she follows but is unable to get through the "Prove You Are Not A Robot" authentication no matter how hard she tries. It seems to be something about her account. She asked me to let all blog writers know that thee are plenty of folks like her, who read and enjoy stitching blogs but aren't able to leave messages.

I don't know about other blog software but Blogger allows writers to turn on authentication of comments and I do that.  This means I have to OK each and every comment but it also means that automated spam is filtered out and the folks who send selling messages to every blog they can find are eliminated before they get to Blog.  I get an average of one spam message a week, but they normally come in clumps of 3-4 one day and then nothing for a week or two until they find Blog again and attempt to post messages.  The latest scam they use is a flattering message about how great your blog is with a link to their site.  All these are marked as spam and deleted before you ever see them.

The down side is that legit comments don't always get through.  That's why when I post a message I know will create a lot of comments I always post my email address so that folks who can't get through Comments can at least email me privately and I can post their message for them.  I would encourage other stitching bloggers to do the same.  You can even set up a free email account just for these messages which is what I have done.  I don't use my private email address, that is for my family to send messages to only.

I promised to mention this problem as it is very frustrating to loyal blog fans.  You have readers you don't know about because they are rendered mute.  I'm not advocating turning off the authentication, mind.  If you do that, you are going to be victimized by spammers and worse.  But I can't comment on most (but not all) WordPress blogs myself.  I know how frustrating that is!

In other news, I've added a photo of Sherry Bray's Day of the Dead lady (she taught Pocito who has the green background at Queen Anne Stitches in Santa Clarita, CA this summer)  to the CH Stitch Guides blog. Sherry is selling the guide for her version if you are interested.  To see Sherry's skeleton all dressed up and ready to rock, pleases click on the magic carpet photo on the right side of this page.  You will be magically whisked away to the other blog to admire Sherry's work.

I Need Me Some Silk Ribbon Inspiration

Say you are interested in learning about stitching with silk ribbon on needlepoint canvas but your local shop --assuming you have one-- doesn't carry it.  You don't know anyone who has ever done silk ribbon embroidery, either.  Where do you start?  Well, you pick up a Kit to Go from River Silks, the company that makes the most lovely silk ribbons in three widths and zillions of colors.   I love their ribbons and have used them in many projects.  It's wonderful ribbon for needlepointers.
http://www.riversilks.com/kitstogo.html

The kits have everything you need, the ribbons, a needle, and the canvas.  The stitch guide you download from the River Silks site (guides for specific projects and help with various common stitches are listed under Education or you can click on this link).
http://www.riversilks.com/stitch_guides.html

If you are ready to jump in (which is what I always do, usually screaming KAWABUNGA! much to my husband's dismay), check out the various kits and find an effect you want to try to replicate, then look at the stitch guide for that project.

Have fun!

DMC Offices Closed Due to Hurricane Sandy UPDATED

I thought shops would like to know that DMC's offices are closed now due to Hurricane Sandy.  This means orders are going to be delayed some.  The damage and disruption has been terrible and I think areas have been forgotten and left to deal with the disaster themselves, so please keep all hurt by Sandy in your prayers.

Katherine's Been Very Busy

Katherine's posted so many interesting things lately that I am grouping them all in one posting. First up, she shows how a problem canvas can turn inspirational again with a change of color and some input from a bystander (in this case, her local shop owner).

Bread and Fishes

The power of the Internet brings wonderful examples of stitching right into our homes, where we can analyze, study and enjoy it all.   Aren't we lucky to be living now?  We can learn from wonderful stitchers like Vicky DeAngelis who is stitching one of the Keep Calm canvases from Unique New Zealand.  She decided on an open background with a darning pattern of fish which you can just barely seen in the lower left corner of the last two photos.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/10/12/the-evolution-of-a-stitch/

Then look and see what happened to the background.  Vicky understands no matter how clever the idea, how terrific the stitch, it doesn't pay to fall in love with it if it isn't just right for that particular canvas.  (Besides, now Vicky can go buy a new canvas with her fish background in mind.)
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/10/14/keep-calm-and-love-cats/

On the other hand, the Domestique, if she ever had doubts, is past them as she presents a finished framed John Johannsen design from Melissa Shirley.  This piece is full of ideas, such as the overdyed thread used to great effect in the background, the combination of ribbon and beads on The Bread Girl's flying ribbons and the interesting sleeves and waistband.  These are all from a Carolyn Hedge Baird stitch guide but that doesn't mean we can't reuse Carolyn's great ideas elsewhere.
http://thedomestiquete.wordpress.com/2012/10/13/needlepoint-post-melissa-shirley-bread-girl/

I am often asked where I get ideas for the painted canvases I stitch  Mostly, I cheat.  I carefully study pieces I see and file away great ideas for later.  It might be a great stitch or it might be a color combination I like.  Or maybe it's Vicky's experience discarding a great stitch for one that suits her canvas better.  All of these great stitchers help me become a great stitcher, and they will do the same for you if you study their experiences and emulate them as much as possible.

We Interrupt the Regularly Scheduled Programming for An Important Message

This morning I have a very important message from a reader, which we need to take to heart.  Here is what Sharon  D. has to say.

"I read with a great deal of sadness about yet another needlepoint shop closing. Every few months or so, you sadly report the demise of another shop and the owner's dreams.

I do think the needlepoint community has some hand in this. I have been thinking about writing to you about this for a long time.

It has been my observation that the projects that are featured and getting all the attention on the various blogs are gorgeous works of art. I love looking at them and dreaming of the days when I would have been able to stitch something comparable and wishing I still could hold a needle in my hand.

However, they are almost always for the advanced stitcher. They employ complicated techniques and stitches. I am sure anyone who did not know about needlepoint and the joys of stitching would be totally overwhelmed by them and decide not to even give it a try.

In one blog sometime ago you dismissed an article about needlepoint in the NYTimes that showed a simple canvas with just tent stitches and humphed that there was so much more to needlepoint than that. Of course, you are correct about that. But think of the beginner.

I have looked at a number of NP shop websites and almost nowhere is there listed a class for beginners. The needlepoint community has gotten so wound up in creating more and more elaborate stitching that the future of this craft/art is going to be lost. The NP community needs to look to the future and make sure that the next generations are going to be able to continue with this wonderful art form.

Needlepoint and quilting came back out of the shadows at about the same time in the early '70s. I didn't know about the quilting but started stitching with enthusiasm back then. Now NP is a dying art, in my humble opinion, and quilting is thriving. Why? The quilting community has made a serious commitment to teach the next generation of quilters the joy of creating quilts. Every quilt shop has classes for beginners. There are videos available on the Internet on how to start making quilts. There are very easy patterns and instructions available. Beginners are welcomed and recruited. There are two sewing/quilting shows on PBS right now. I am aware of this because I have been making quilts for about 18 years.

Alas, the NP community seems to have gotten so caught up in making the next amazing creation that it appears no thought has been given as to how to recruit and teach beginners and ensure that the next generation will carry this art form forward.

I live in a suburb. In this whole area, which has a population of probably about 500,000, there is one tiny, and I mean tiny needlepoint/knitting shop. It is about 300 square feet and carries a very limited supply of threads and canvases. At least half of it is devoted to knitting. I think this is rather typical of a great deal of the country.

Long ago when I traveled, the first thing I did was look in the phone book for NP shops. I usually found one no matter where I was. That was how I met Loretta Spears. I can't do that anymore.

Anyway, that is my two cents. My favorite possessions are my NP pieces. They are the first things I would grab if the house caught on fire. So I am sad to watch this wonderful art slowly dying.

You are a very well known and influential person in the NP world. Please spread the word that new stitchers are desperately needed to carry on this tradition."

Sharon D.

Needlepoint in the National Cathedral UPDATED

The DMC blog just stumbled across the needlepoint in the National Cathedral in D.C.  It's my impression the late Davie Hyman worked to create some of the designs and there used to be a booklet sold about the needlepoint in the Cathedral shop.  Does anyone have anything more to add?

Yes, there was a booklet.  It doesn't seem to be available now, at least not through Amazon.

Google pointed me to a tour that is all about the needlepoint.

Fancywork Finishing has also done work there.

The Needle Bug was there.

And so was this lady, who really enjoyed the needlepoint in the Children's Chapel.

Anyone have more information to add?

UPDATE:  Palma added this link to a news article about a needlepoint kneelers dedication service in Pass Christian, Mississippi, which was scoured off the earth by Hurricane Katrina.

Stitch and Zip eBook Reader Project

My Stitch and Zip eBook Project

I was amazed to see this little Stitch and Zip cosmetic bag on the Needleart Nut's blog tonight because I have just started a Stitch and Zip project myself.  Here is what Pat's done on hers.
http://needleartnut.blogspot.com/2012/11/cosmetic-bag.html

I wanted something to stitch on Election Day as I anticipate that there will be lulls in voting while I am helping at the polls as an election official for my county.  Belleza is way too large to take with me although I expect she would draw a LOT of attention!  Instead, I am taking an eBook Reader case with me.  I bought the coffee themed one on sale at the local big box crafts emporium last summer.

The person I want to give this to doesn't drink coffee, so I decided I would use a charted pattern on the cover instead.  I choose SharonG's gorgeous Brocade Variation stitch from her 2005 Stitch of the Month project for ANG.

I have recently been given some of Planet Earth Fiber's new wool so I choose a skein of that in dark green (Juniper #062) to set up the grid that is the basis for this stitch.  That's what you see being done in the photo above.

I left the case unzipped in the photo so you can see the Stitch and Zip front and back.  The back fabric is a sturdy thin velveteen.  I will probably put padding beneath my needlepoint and then slip stitch a piece of Ultrasuede over the back side to give extra padding and protection for the front of the eBook reader itself when the case is zipped close.

I have to say the Planet Earth wool is quite nice stuff.  You can see the strand of green in the photo plus an unopened skein of tan in the photo.   It is 90 percent wool and 10 percent nylon so it doesn't feel scratchy.  If I didn't know better I would think it was a silk/wool blend with just a little less shine than these threads normally have.   I am allergic to wool and never stitch with it in the summer when it is hot.  But I haven't felt the itch with this wool.  Still, it has been unseasonably cold and this might be less easy to stitch with next July.  It covers well on the 14 count interlock canvas used by Stitch and Zip cases.  Interlock does occasionally rub off a tiny bit of wool if I am using too long a length but I think that is just because interlock abrades threads more than regular canvas does.  I am using a size 20 needle and trying to remember to cut smaller lengths and haven't had a problem very often, only when I pick out and restitch an area because I can't count properly.

I'll post a photograph of the finished piece once it is done.

The Floozy's Necklace and Betsy's Stars

If you have been curious about Wonder Ribbon in action, Needleart Nut has used some for the necklace on her Leigh canvas from Leigh Design's Floozie series.

Stephanie's stars on her Betsy Ross canvas (one of the Wild Women series by Melissa Shirley) have been diagrammed by Needle Works in Austin who graciously allowed Stephanie to post the diagram for us all to use.

If Clothes Make the Man....

...then finishing makes the needlepoint. Nothing illustrates this better than Robin King's posting that shows up a zillion ways of finishing her Needle Deeva Creeps series.

How To Dye Threads

I think everyone who has stitched more than one or two projects has run into problems with thread dye lots being different, with not being able to find just the color of thread you need, or had a thread you like discontinued (usually within days of finishing a stitch guide for a project that uses a LOT of that particular thread).   The life of a thread manufacturer is full of these problems, many of which are out of their control.

I ran across an article on Opus Anglicanum about dyeing one's own threads that I thought you'd enjoy because it illustrates the complexity of dyeing threads.  Tanya is creating a large series of panels of reproduction 14th Century Icelandic embroidery and ran out of the red wool that frames each panel.  Hence the dye lecture since she hand dyed all the 2 ply wool for the project originally and now has to make more of the red.   I found it fascinating, and I think you will, too.  I appreciate the commercial thread companies a lot more after reading this, even though their processes are much different than the small batch of hand dyeing Tanya is doing.
