Just Occasionally I Am Glad I Don't Travel

I'm still putting links to new products/canvases/charts in the TNNA tab (which I made PINK so you could easily spot it on the mess that is Blog) but I thought you'd enjoy reading the adventure that is Sandy Arthur's trip to TNNA here.
http://sandyarthur.blogspot.com/2013/01/long-beach-at-last-things-didnt-start.html

Air travel is quite an adventure!  Sadly, I like "predictable" when I get on an airplane....

Better Sandy than me, that's all I have to say.

Finishing

Janet Perry interviews the wildly talented Pat Mazu about her original shaped designs she creates for her family each Christmas.

Speaking of finishing (Pat's written a good book on finishing), you will enjoy seeing Diane's new Christmas bell and blue Santa ornament.

How to Lace Your Stitching For Framing

I found this nice little tutorial on how to lace your stitching for framing at Anna's blog.  I think needlepoint canvas is treated pretty much the same way as linen or other embroidery fabrics.  She's the editor of Inspirations magazine, by the way. Hope you find this helpful in getting your stitching just the way you want it before you pop it in a frame!

Fame!

Guess who was the poster girl for the Day of the Dead celebration in New Mexico?
http://phoenixneedlepointnews.blogspot.com/2012/11/poster-girl.html

You can see a stitched version of Belleza's Day of the Dead sister Pocito here, by the way.  Check out what Sheena is doing for the bodice of her Melissa Shirley Wild Woman canvas, by the way.  Sheena's stitching Mae West.
http://www.sheenasstitches.com/januarys-stitcherie-challenge/

Not to worry, I am stitching away on Belleza, but I'm working on a part that will take me probably two weeks to finish and show off.

Sweaters and Buttons

Rittenhouse has posted photos of some of their favorite Stitch-Its sweater and button sets.

There are tons of different designs available.  Here are just a few from the Stitch-Its site.  Note the links at the top of the page to more styles.  Not every sweater canvas has buttons but a lot of them do.

New Pat Mazu Designs

Fans of counted canvaswork and subscribers to the needlepoint magazines have seen lots of Pat Mazu's wonderful little stocking designs. Occasionally Pat does something that isn't a stocking and they are terrific, too. I am thrilled to see that Stitches from the Heart has new charts of her work available.
http://stitches-heart.com/4-new-pat-mazu-designs/

The stars at the top of Kim's Stars I've just seen Tony Minieri use in a fabulous background.  The gold and white stockings are the most elegant little stockings imaginable, while the Spindrift stocking is perfect for the ocean lover or sailor in your life.  I think the three little Glittering stocking patterns have been in Needle Pointers.  Great stuff, all four charts!  It is a good time to be a counted thread sort of needepointer, isn't it?

Pat has a finishing book available as well.  I've not seen it in person but friends say it is a great finishing book.

Designing A Cabinet of Curiosities

The Cabinet of Curiosities class that Tricia Nguyen is doing fascinates me. I am not really into reproduction stitching personally, but once I realized that reproduction samplers were time machines, I started paying more attention to reproduction stitching in general.  You may not see the charm yourself, but once you read these, I guarantee you will find Cabinet of Curiosities interesting, too!

Easter Crackers

Easter Crackers, Courtesy of Marilyn Owen
I've noticed that the rage for Christmas cracker shaped ornaments has taken hold here in the World of Needlepoint. It used to be just a counted thread thing, with dozens of designs available from most cross stitch and counted thread designers. But it was not a NP interest until recently when Melissa Shirley started designing small rectangular shapes to be made up into crackers.  Melissa has designed crackers for Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day and Easter.  (And Palma reminded me that there are a few for the 4th of July as well!)
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/galsearch/?searchstring=crackers&searchlist=&Search=Search&dosearch=

Then Melissa tempted great stitchers to do stitch guides for them.  Laurie Walden and Cynthia Thomas have done guides for the Christmas crackers.  Palma Seijan's finishing up guides for the new Easter and Valentine's sets that are premiering this month at TNNA.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/galsearch/index.cgi?index=1161107729_31742&col=

http://melissashirleydesigns.com/galsearch/index.cgi?index=1330034925_31843&col=

Now Marilyn Owen of Moore Than Needlepoint in North Carolina has joined in with a wonderful set of Easter crackers that are counted canvas work, not painted canvas.  Hurrah!  You can see them in detail in the link below  There is also an ad in the January 2013 issue of Needlepoint Now if you are a subscriber.  Several of the crackers will work for other times of the year if you aren't an Easter decorator.  For example, change the kite cracker's colors to a red, white and blue color scheme and you have a July cracker!  By the way, the instructions for each cracker (sold separately) include finishing instructions in case you want to try your hand at your own finishing for one of these, or use the instructions on other crackers in your collection.
http://www.moorethanneedlepoint.com/Crackers.html

If Marilyn's name seems familiar, she is the designer of the Folding Ort Box, Halloween Treat, and Ornament Quartet in the ANG Chapter Project Book, and created the design Sudoku Serendipity for Needle Pointers.  She also is part owner of Moore Than Needlepoint.  Upon exploring the shops website, I also discovered a wonderful limited edition Christmas ornament that would be quick to stitch up as a present for a golfing buddy or a friend who lives in the Pinehurst area.  Nobody in Pinehurst?  Substitute your own location or just your house number or even leave the lettering off.

I think this is a shop and designer to keep an eye on....

Monthly Clubs in Review

I haven't been posting on Blog about monthly clubs, just updating the tab that covers all the current Monthly Clubs (and some older clubs which are still available).  That doesn't mean there hasn't been a lot of club news, though.  For example, French Knot has removed the Petei Santa club from their website, although clicking on Petei in the left hand navigation bar will still take you to the photographs of their Petei Santas and the stitch guides for these no longer available canvases are still for sale.  If you happen to have one in your stash or manage to buy one on eBay, you can still get one of Diana Bosworth's fabulous guides for it.
http://www.thefrenchknot.com

Fireside happens to have added a new club of Melissa Shirley starfish that is dear to my heart as they are stitched by Palma Seljan as accessories for her Nepture and Queen of the Sea canvases she did for Fireside last year.  Amazing work!  Simple, but elegantly inventive, like all Palma's stitching.  Trust me, the photos don't do these justice!
http://www.firesidestitchery.com/fs/Clubs/index.cfm?fuseaction=getClubItems&CategoryId=3&clubNumberId=201

http://www.firesidestitchery.com/fs/clubs/index.cfm?fuseaction=getclubList&CategoryId=3&clubstate=classic

Here is what Diane has to say about the clubs she is joining in 2013.
http://dianestakingtimeouttoneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2013/01/two-great-clubs.html

The moral is, check out the Monthly Clubs tab occasionally.  I post new items at the top of the list.

Other Uses for Mini Socks

I think you'll enjoy a good long look at Jane's Twelve Days of Christmas mini socks. I am pretty sure they are from Tapestry Tent and Jane says the club was from the French Knot in Texas, so you too can stitch these if you've a mind to.  She used hers for silverware holders at dinner parties, which must have looked wonderful!  Christmas can happen any month of the year, besides....

Now That's REALLY Petitpoint!

Needleprint just profiled Elga and her stitching and cabinetry skills.  Silk gauze is the traditional material for dollhouse rugs and other items just because you can get the right scale.  Scale is everything in miniature-making.  A rug on 18 count canvas might look too coarse in your dollhouse if everything else is in a smaller scale.
http://needleprint.blogspot.com/2013/01/elga-tres-petit-petitpointers.html

I hope you enjoy seeing her work.  Her blog is wonderfully interesting as she shows how she is making her reproduction 17th Century casket and her silk gauze embroidery is wonderful to see.  I didn't know there was a Yahoo Group for petitpoint stitchers, though.  Take note and sign up if this is something you love to do!

Paternayan About to Reappear UPDATED

I emailed Ken at Saco River Dye House to get the very latest news about the new Paternayan his company is about to release. He very kindly took time out from preparing for the TNNA show to send us the following news, which I think should make Paternayan fans very happy.  Thanks, Ken!

Jane,

Thanks a lot for asking and please feel free to post all or part of this:

The dye house began to operate a few days before Thanksgiving, 2012.  During the intervening time we evaluated a number of samples of Paternayan Persian dating back 40 years.  We then asked three spinning companies to produce samples. One of those companies produced a sample which Don Morton, who has been dyeing Paternayan yarn for 40+ years, felt was "perfect".  Even more amazing was that as we began dyeing the Persian in traditional Paternayan colors we noticed it once again had some of the "sheen" that had been lost in the changing composition and manufacture over the past 20 years.  We are all extremely pleased with the product and anxious to get it into our customers hands.

The Persian consists of three plies of 2 strands of yarn--all the same size. This decision was based upon a number of comments we received early in our evaluation process from long-time Paternayan needle-pointers (actually, I think the three different sizes were lost in the late 70's).  Preliminary samples have since been evaluated by 6-8 needlepoint artists who seemed to think this yarn now closely represents the Persian they had used before.  By the end of the month we will have 25 of the most frequently requested colors available and will continue to dye 25-40 lb. batches as the yarn and orders become available.  We currently have approximately 800 lbs. to dye and will be purchasing an additional 1000 lbs. in early March.  It will take us a year to develop the full color palette.

We will be at TNNA in Long Beach with about 20-25 colors in 8 yd skeins for samples.  Donna Joseph (donna@sacoriverdyehouse.com) will be there with us as our sales representative.  We feel that: 1) by hiring  Don Morton as dyemaster with 40+ years experience at JCA in both commission dyeing and production of Paternayan Persian, 2) hiring Donna Joseph with her long time sales presence for Paternayan, and 3) contracting with a spinning company familiar with Paternayan Persian dating back 30-40 years, we have been able to produce a product many previous users of Paternayan Persian will find extremely satisfactory for their personal as well as their customers needs.

Thank you for your questions

Ken

The Restaurant Wall

Thanks to Donna's sharp eyes and inquiring mind, I have a wonderful cross stitch art installation at a Toronto restaurant for you to admire this morning. Stitching certainly goes faster with one person on each side of the "canvas"!

I think, but I am not certain, that the screens are two layers, with a portrait of a woman underneath the geometric trellis pattern.  Here's a direction link to the Vimeo page that shows the work being created and installed so you can check for yourself.

Where to Find TNNA Winter 2013 Information

I've been thinking how best to present the new products that are showing up in advance of the Winter 2013 trade show in Long Beach.   I don't know about you, but I will see something that I want to look at later but have a hard time finding it because there is just Too Much New Stuff.  Maybe it will help to create a new section on Blog where everything is listed.  Look at the tabs at the top of the page under the header.  I'll post the latest on top as new stuff appears.  Happy shopping!

Latest Paternayan News

The latest Paternayan news comes via Needle Nicely, which just placed an order for the new Paternayan.  Briefly, there are around thirty colors to start, delivery of the order is expected in mid-February, and it will cost more than the old version of Paternayan.  I'm pretty sure the three plies will be all roughly the same dimension instead of the old "father, mother, baby" sizes which are useful in plying to fit a certain canvas size, but are very expensive to create.
http://needlenicely.blogspot.com/2013/01/hearts-iii.html

Here are my earlier messages about Paternayan and the plans of the company that purchased the rights and the buildings and stock.  The official introduction of the new Paternayan is planned for the TNNA Winter 2013 show in late January-early February.  Shops who haven't ordered yet can do so at the trade show.

Angel Hair

Petei Angel Before
When you last saw the Petei angel, she looked like this.  Her hair wasn't finished, though.  Should her hair look like a young Brooke Shields?
http://thecapestitcher.blogspot.com/2013/01/angel-progress-head-and-shoulders-shot.html

Or perhaps her hair should be blowing in the breeze like the Queen of the Seas' lovely tresses?
http://stitcherie.ning.com/photo/queen-of-the-sea?context=user

Styling Bo Derek's Hair
No, I was thinking of copying Bo Derek's look in Ten.  Anyone remember that movie?
http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Bo-Derek-10-Posters_i7968675_.htm?AID=96280778&ProductTarget=53105935183

I started giving the angel a Bo Derek look by laying long stem stitches using Wool Crepe from Fabulous Fibers and Embellishments on top of the straight vertical stitches (using Lorikeet wool) I'd already done. Wool Crepe is a wool-rayon blend that is very tightly twisted together.  This gives you a strand a bit smaller than #8 perle cotton but with a ridged look due to the tight twist.  I used Sand Daffodil #003 which gave the angel blonde highlights.  You can see more of this fiber at the Fabulous Fibers website.
http://www.fabulousfibers.com/detail.asp?c=Wool+Crepe

I added a bullion and a French knot or two with my Wool Crepe, then switched back to 1-2 plies of my Lorikeet wool to add more French knots, a bullion or two more, stem stitches and chain stitches here and there.  I also tossed in a few beads, using a gorgeous tan faceted Delica bead from Miyuki called Varied Taupe #6276.  It has a lot of shine.  The photos don't really show the beads well, but below is my Petei angel all finished with Bo Derek hair.  What fun!

Petei's Angel is Finished
I never knew that chain stitch would give a braided look to hair, or that beads would also add to the flowing effect.  Probably a smoother hairstyle would look nicer on this angel but I wanted to experiment a little.  Small pieces like this 4x7 angel are perfect for trying something new, just to see how it looks. I like how she turned out and hope she tempts you to experiment on some of your smaller pieces as well.

It's the experiments that we do with our needle that make us better stitchers, after all!

The Petei angel has gone into the drawer with other finished canvases I have yet to make up.  I hate finishing so I tend to accumulate a pile of it, then turn everything into finished pieces all at once.

Father Frost Class

The newest Shining Needle Society class is a beauty--Carole Lake's Father Frost. The original Father Frost was icy blue, but her parter in crime, uh, teaching has chosen four other colorways so you can deviate from the original if you so choose.  Here is the class information, and ...

...here are the photos of all the Fathers.

I don't envy those who are taking the class and have to choose what color to go with!

P.S.  If you need a needle magnet for your Father Frost piece, how about one of the new Fob Friends snowflakes?

The Long Winter

Some winters seem endless, don't they?   For us winter came early with three small snows the week of Christmas and the first snow on Christmas Eve I ever remember. That was special!

Now it is rainy and warm, with temperatures in the 60s, which is about twenty degrees warmer than normal.  Good stitching weather, whether you are inside because of snow or because of rain.  Laura Perin has acknowledged this stitching time of year with a new entry in her Long Panel series--Long Winter.
http://two-handedstitcher.blogspot.com/2013/01/first-new-pattern-of-2013.html

It is icy blue and just the thing to keep you cozy during those long winter nights.  Thanks, Laura!

Angel with Green Collar

Petei Angel Has Hair
This morning the Petei angel has streaming wool hair (one ply of the overdyed wool Lorikeet from Gloriana in straight stitches) and the start of green beads on her elaborate collar.  There's a problem with the collar.  The beads look too yellow when attached.

The problem is with the color of the thread I'm using to attach them.  In the photo above you see it hanging down.  It's ecru.

Two Bead Colors in Collar
Now look at this photo where I have switched to a dark green floss (left side) to attach the beads. Both flosses are visible so you can see what color I used.  There is quite a difference. It is the same green bead and it isn't a transparent bead, but the floss color makes the beads more olive or more yellow in color which effects the look.  Moral of the story, I need to be more careful of the color of thread I use when beading.  It can make a huge difference.  Only a few beads are "silver lined" which means the hole is coated with silver paint.  Those probably can get by with any color of thread, although sometimes the thread shows at the base of a bead.  It's just another thing to keep in mind.

Bead Collar Fixed and Stars Strung
Last night I added a length of silver DMC memory thread as the string the stars hang from.  Next I plan to do something totally unexpected to finish her.  Stay tuned!

Tips on Long and Short

This little article has great tips on how to do long and short stitch.   Long and short is a crewel embroidery technique that is absolutely beautiful when well done.  (On needlepoint canvas, I use a sharp needle to put a stitch right through a thread of the underlying canvas if necessary.)  Believe me, I am going to study this religiously!

Fancy Dresses and Silk Stockings

Petei's Angel with Stars
Things are going much faster on the little Petei angel I choose to work on during the holidays when my big canvas was just too large to have out during Christmas prep.  She has silk stockings (ok, they are an overdyed cotton from Thread Gatherer in green alternating with red Soie d'Alger silk) and the first part of her dress and sleeves are in.  Some of the gold stars on the ribbon she holds are finished.  The stars are tiny size 15 round gold beads attached using reverse tent stitches.  The angel has a halo which is simply gold Kreinik braid couched down with more of the same thread.  I finished the cross stitches using the same Kreinik gold on her elaborate collar and filled in the empty spaces among the gold with tiny size 15 pearls.  Her billowing skirt is done in Staggered Mosaic, which you can see better here.  Step one is all in red Lorikeet wool.  The filled in spots are in the same silk used on her stockings.  I'm sorry I couldn't find a diagram for you but this stitch is in the third Stitches for Effect book as well as in SuZy Murphy's books.
http://theyoungneedlepointer.blogspot.com/2012/08/mia-for-too-long.html

Her sleeves are in the same threads (or they will be when I add step two of Tony Minieri's Kimi Stitch).  You can see the stitch diagrammed here.  I turned the chart to have the stitches run the way I wanted for each sleeve.
http://www.needlepoint.org/StitchOfTheMonth/2009/mar.php

Once I finish the angel's outfit and add the rest of the stars, I will tackle her face and hands, then move on to the green part of her elaborate collar. I also have to stitch in the string the little gold stars hang from.  I think her hair will be last as it will take the most time.  Stay tuned!

Same Old, Same Old

The ANG Seminar is once again scheduled during Yom Kippur.  This is a constant problem ANG has since they have to choose from a limited selection of hotel openings that are during less desirable dates.  This year they are making special arrangements with local synagogues but I'd love to see them move Seminar to another season so everyone can go.
http://thenimbleneedle.blogspot.com/2013/01/ang-seminar-2015.html?showComment=1357825884957#c3468582949679985976

The real problem is -- when would that be?  Remember, they can't afford hotels during the High Seasons.

Blue Skies, Blue Eyes

Petei Angel Holding String of Stars
It's been slow going on my little Petei angel during Christmas as we had house guests. There just wasn't time to work on her but after everyone left and I got the house sort of back in shape, I finished the blue sky and her blue eyes.   The eyes are done with the same blue Petite Treasure Braid that occasionally fills in the diamonds in the background so they look like stars twinkling in the blue sky.  In this photo you can really see the contrast between the medium blue of the diamond outlines and the paler blue Petite Silk Lame Braid that fills in each diamond.  This background eats thread like crazy and I was afraid I'd run out of Petite Silk Lame Braid, so I used regular 18 count Silk Lame Braid in the same color for the compensation stitches around her hair and dress and stockings.   Those compensation stitches were mostly tent stitches and regular 18 count Silk Lame Braid does nicer tent stitches than the Petite Silk Lame Braid does unless you double or triple the smaller Petite SLB in your needle.  That saved thread and made my compensation stitches better looking and quicker to do.

I think I'll do gold Kreinik cross stitches on her gold and white bib, then nestle little white pearls among those stitches.  After that, I will rummage in the stash for pink threads for her face and hands and silks in red and green for her striped stockings.  Stay tuned for more angel goodness.  Things should start moving faster now.

At least I hope so!

Odd Stitching Habits

Suzanne has introduced a new topic in the Needlepoint World: odd stitching habits.
http://suzannehicks.blogspot.com/2012/12/goin-fishin-with-santa.html

I've been trying to think what I do that is unusual.  I suppose my love of a trolley needle for laying threads is considered odd in some quarters.  A lot of people worry about poking their eyes on with that thing.  Never even occurred to me to worry although it never occurred to me to poke it into the margins of my canvas, either.  I park mine on my needle magnet or the table instead.
