Once Upon A Time A King Fell in Love

Blickling Hall, from the TNNA Winter Show 2014

Once Upon a Time there was a young English upper class lady, born in a lovely English manor house called Blickling Hall somewhere in the early 1500s.   Blicking Hall still exists.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWt8-4bBUI0

The lady has long been dust but she became Queen of England after Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church, taking his whole kingdom with him, so he could marry her.  Only a few years later she was executed by her husband so he could marry someone else after she failed to produce a male heir, but her legend still lives.  I'm talking Anne Boleyn, of course.  Henry VIII's love letters to her exist in the Vatican, of all places,  Their only child, Queen Elizabeth I, is considered one of England's greatest rulers.

Blickling Hall, Seen As in a Dream

When Leigh Richardson showed me her Manor Born series, which celebrates the huge variety of ancient and beautiful buildings that exist all over England today, I was bewitched by Blickling Hall and its lion.  I had to stitch it.  Here are Blickling Hall's siblings, by the way.  Each is special architecturally and because of its history.  But Blickling Hall spoke to me.
http://www.leighdesigns.com/Grp720x.html

If you compare my finished piece to the unstitched Manors on the Leigh Designs website, you will notice that my version of Blickling Hall has a border added.  Because of Amy Bunger's Tudors Home Study last year, I knew that Anne Boleyn had a favorite pearl necklace with three pear-shaped pearls.
http://www.amybunger.com/f/1013.pdf

Because of Amy's mention of this necklace, I did a little more research and discovered that Anne loved pearls (as did Queen Elizabeth I) and also loved initial jewelry which was very popular in the 16th Century.  This is the origin of my optional pearl and gold initial necklace border.

Ingatestone Manor
I'm not the only one who has stitched a Manor so that you can have a stitch guide.  Here is Sharon Quick's Ingatestone Manor.  The Petrie family has lived there since they bought the place in the early 1500s.

Hatton Hall

Sandy Arthur stitched Hatton Hall.  For me, this is the classic British estate house.  It's not a castle, it's a home complete with sheep grazing in the foreground.  It would be wonderful to wander any of these manors, however.  They are not castles, although many housed queens (or ghosts).  They are historic houses, the perfect settings for costume dramas and daydreams.

Enjoy....

We Wait (And I Worry) UPDATED AGAIN

If you are like me, during your stitching career you have ordered something from a shop they didn't have in stock, then waited and waited for it to come in.   I once waited six weeks for a piece of silk gauze I was told should be there in a month, then when I contacted the shop for an estimate of the arrival date, they told me they hadn't actually placed the order yet because they couldn't order from that manufacturer unless they met the minimum order dollar amount.  They were waiting until they had enough things on their Wish List to place an order.  This happens enough to stitchers that I see a weekly posting on Needlepoint Nation that says something like "Would any shop that has this in stock contact me?"  Stitchers have been burned enough that they try to find the item they desire from anyone before they place an order with their local shop and end up waiting until they barely remember what they ordered.  Ever wonder why businesses are run this way?  Tricia gives us a glimpse of the business thinking behind this behavior.
http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-dreaded-backorder-how.html

She also points out that the artisans who are the heart of this business are retiring, and not replacable.
http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-time-is-now-how-our-textile.html

UPDATE:  Tricia talks about the death of one of her businesses, illustrating how the various forces operate on small companies that cater to the handwork elite.
http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2015/11/end-of-era-tokens-and-trifles.html

UPDATE #2:  Kreinik is stocking up on the Tokens and Trifles items while they can.
http://kreinikthread.blogspot.com/2015/11/update-tokens-and-trifles-perforated.html

I have to tell you, when I see all the threads we have available today and then read the above, I am really worried about the future.  Are we living in the last Golden Age of Needlepoint?  But Tricia doesn't just worry, she has a proposal.
http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2014/04/a-kickstarter-for-historic-threads.html

UPDATE #3:  Tricia was sent information about the wool industry that explains even more just how precarious needle art businesses are and the things that have to go right to give us our supplies.

Needlepoint Boxes

If you are a fan of tiny Limoges china boxes for rings and other small items, you will love the boxes Ridgewood customers have stitched.

Back in Time to the 1840s

Deborah just turned up this wonderful video about a piece of needlepoint dating from the 1840s, creating by a little girl in a Baltimore Catholic girls school exclusively for African-American girls.  Looking back in time we tend to think blacks in this country were all slaves before the Civil War, but the reality was much more complex.  This little girl was obviously from a prosperous family who wanted their daughter to have the best education possible, including mastery of her needle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMMiyR2Pb98&feature=youtu.be

The piece is part of the Bayou Bend Collection and Garden, which is part of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.

Thanks for the great find, Deborah!

May 3-5 is On the Horizon

I know half of you read the title and said so what?  Of course the first week of May is just around the corner! But the above dates are for next weekend's TNNA show in Indianapolis.   The designers are getting ready, packing madly, making dinner reservations, checking their To Do lists frantically!
http://createneedlepoint.typepad.com/create_needlepoint/2014/04/needlepoint-showcase.html

The shops are getting ready, too.  Many have sales just before the trade shows so they clear out inventory and have a little extra cash to buy-buy-buy!  Don't forget to keep an eye on the April Trunk Shows and Sales tab as well as the one that reads "TNNA Indianapolis May 2014."  I've already been posting lots of updates about new items as the manufacturers and designers drop hints or post photos on their Facebook page.  I've also been updated the CH Stitch Guides blog with the newest guides.  Don't forgot to ride the magic carpet over to see what is there when you are looking for inspiration.

The Blue Russian Santa is all ready.  He and two brothers have been turned into stand up figures. They are going to hang out in the Leigh Designs booth with Leigh's latest series (which is fabulous, naturally).  If you are going to the show, I hope you drop by to see him in person.  Nothing beats seeing a piece right in front of you.

Meanwhile, we stitchers are waiting impatiently for everyone to arrive in Indianapolis and for the show to begin!

Shapes IV: A Mini Review

Yesterday I had to take the car in for an oil change so I took my copy of Shapes of Needlepoint  Series IV:  Diagonals Verticals Horizontals by Sandy Arthur to amuse myself while I waited. WOW! I read it cover to cover for the first time, admiring the gray scale diagrams and looking carefully at the stitches as I mentally try to find something good for my next project.
http://networkedblogs.com/OPVam

As you know, this is the fourth in Sandy's series of Shape books, all of which categorize stitches by their general shape and then arranges them in the books by their width and height.  This makes it very easy to find a stitch that will fit in an area on your canvas.

The thing I enjoyed most in this book, besides the diagrams which I admire greatly, was seeing vertical, horizontal and diagonal versions of the same stitch. You don't see that in most books and it is something that I will find invaluable when I do repeats of the same stitch oriented differently. The book is worth the admission price for that alone if you are constantly stitching and making it up as you go along.  I don't generally count threads when I am looking for a stitch to put in a space, and I should get into that habit. Sandy's books make it a lot easier to solve stitch problems because they are set up that way.

I loved the book. Now that I have actually sat down with it and become familiar with what it covers, I will probably refer to it at least once per project.

If you are not familiar with Sandy's books, some of which are available as apps in the iTunes store, check out her website.  Right now she has a special if you buy all four books at once.

A Little Bit of History

I thought the history buffs among us might like to visit Carolyn Meacham's website to see two small Berlin woodwork charts she has for sale.   If we were Victorians, these ancestors of counted canvaswork charts would be what we used to stitch from.
http://elegantarts.com/product_info.php?products_id=538

Carolyn is an antiques dealer who specializes in needlework items.  Gay Ann Rogers talks about many of the unique items that Carolyn sells through eBay auctions in her Shining Needle Society classroom.  Visiting Carolyn's website and eBay auctions is a great way to learn about the history of needlepoint by studying the tools that our stitching ancestors used.  Besides, where else will you see a solid gold needle case in the shape of the bust of a Roman matron?  (click on "My Collection")

Bunny Time

Spring is the time when rabbits run wild (except in Chilly Hollow where we only see bunny tracks in the winter as having large dogs tends to keep rabbits at bay).  Nimble Needle in New Jersey is following this trend by showing off some of their bunny canvases, which range from the amazing Elizabeth Turner portrait of a black and white rabbit to the gourd piece wearing a needlepoint front shirt.  In between is a classic crewel portrait and a Victorian bunny egg.  Something for everyone who loves rabbit themes!

A Wonderful Display

Some days I just want to sit and look at lovely finished projects. So this morning I have two photo galleries for you to explore and enjoy. The first is from Amy Bunger's shop. These are customer class pieces and finished stitch guide models as far as I can tell.  Use the Next command to move through the album, admiring the lovely stitching and interesting effects.  If you fall in love, I'm sure Amy and her staff can help you with the canvas and a guide or lesson plan and the threads.
http://www.amybunger.com/albums/album_image/6262614/7263528.htm

Next let's head north from Memphis to New Jersey, where the New Jersey Needle Artists Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild has a gallery of finished member pieces that is a joy to browse.   Click on a photo and then use the right and left side arrows to navigate through the fun.
http://njneedleartists.org/photo-gallery/

Many thanks to the shops and guilds who post their wonderful needle art online!  You are an inspiration to us all.

More Background Magic from a Master

Anne Sradal of ABS Designs likes to blog-stitch various items from her line but occasionally she works on something else. I was particularly interested to read her description of why she choose the background color, thread and stitch for this Amanda Lawford stand up Santa.   Her points are very valid for all of us to remember when we are choosing our own backgrounds.

Boston Strong (with Manatees)

I missed posting canvases celebrating the spirit of Boston during the Boston Marathon earlier this week but the Boston Strong theme is always relevant.   Wellesley Needlepoint has two ornaments that are fund-raisers.
http://www.wellesleyneedlepoint.com

Here are two new canvases about Boston and sports.  (When I lived in Boston the most popular sports were baseball, football, hockey and politics.)
http://twisinc.blogspot.com/2014/04/a-big-day-in-boston.html

Congratulations to Boston and the marathon runners!

Speaking of fund raisers, Robin King, Charley Harper and EGA's Sun Region are getting together during their regional seminar (second link).  If you live in Florida or Bermuda, make sure you include this EGA event in your plans for early May.

Patty's Blue Russian (and More)

Patty's Blue Russian Done!
This morning I have another wonderful finished Blue Russian to share, this time from Patty.   Her Blue Russian is special to me because Patty has to mail order her threads and she waited patiently while I got far enough in stitching my model so that she would only have to order threads once.  I appreciated that!   Patty's Russian Santa varies a little bit from mine in that his blue eyes were made from one cross stitch over one with a very light blue #4 Kreinik metallic and she used Brian’s Steppe Stitch to create the snow under his feet.  This gives him both a solid grounding and an intense expression.  He's now on the way to the finisher while Patty puts the Forever Green Russian Santa on her Evertites and starts thinking stitches and threads.

In other Russian Santa news, since the May 2014 issue of ANG's Needle Pointers magazine is in the mail, I can reveal that I wrote an article about choosing threads and stitches for painted canvases in this issue, using my Blue Russian as the example when I explained how I go about picking just the right stitch or thread.  I've already been asked if I will post the article here.  I think ANG won't allow that--although I will ask--since they want people to join the organization, but there is an article on how to stitch a painted canvas written by me several years back on their website and freely available already.  If you read through my public blog-stitching of Blue Russian here and read this, you will have a lot of information about how to tackle a painted canvas.

Remember, you can always revisit my blog-stitching of Blue Russian by clicking on the tab above.

It Wouldn't Be Easter....

It wouldn't be Easter without a glimpse of the Easter bunny tree that one of Steph's friends puts out each year.   The double-sided rabbits (and the single cat) are canvases from MCM Designs.  These are no longer available but they turn up on eBay occasionally.  Expect to spend about $80 or more if you find one.

A Mystery--and a Little Dog, Too!

Ruth Schmuff has started her next mystery class, based on a watercolor-like design from Shelly Penko.  It's going to be interesting to see how Ruth handles all those competing areas of pattern.

Ann The Dazzler

Needle Artworks just announced a new design from Ann Strite-Kurz and a new class as well. The new design is called Diamond Dazzler.
http://www.needleartworks.com/dsgnr/ask/ASK47.htm

The class is on open patterns, and includes lots of ways to hide stitches as you do light coverage or blackwork patterns.  Ann is an expert on complex, layered stitches which are unlike anyone else's work.  Check out her articles in Needlepoint Now and her free 2004 Stitch of the Month design for ANG on their website (second link).

A Chair to Remember

These photos were apparently taken at the Chelsea flower show in 2012.

Design and stitching by Kaffe Fassett.  I think the rest of the needlepoint is also his design but I am not certain.  In the last photo he's on the left, stitching.

After I wrote this article and put it in the queue to publish, I discovered Kay Fassett is being honored at the American Museum in Bath.  Here are more photos of his incredible work!

Trunk Show Models on View

Many times trunk shows include models that the designer loans a shop to show what their canvases look like stitched. It's rare to see photos of these, however, so I was excited to see that Pocket Full of Stitches has posted photographs of the models in their current Artists Collection show.

Do You Remember Erma Bombeck?

Back in the day when newspapers were read by everybody, certain humor columnists were wildly popular. After all, who doesn't love a laugh? Erma Bombeck specialized at laugher generated by everyday life, making us smile and occasionally think at the same time. Pepita found one of her old 1974 columns you have to read!
http://needlepointofview.com/2014/03/23/erma-bombeck/

Here's the direct link to the newspaper article, just in case Pepita's link breaks.  If you look at the other articles, you'll see mention of the classic Battle of the Sexes tennis match that paired champion Billie Jean King against Bobby Riggs and the death of needlepointer Mary Martin's husband, not to mention O.J. Simpson's full name and nude photos of Jacqueline Kennedy and her second husband.  Some things change, some never do.  We are lucky that needlepoint obsession is eternal!

Ashland Sky Changes Hands

Ashland Sky has a new owner--Leigh Designs!
http://yarntree.typepad.com/needlework_news/2014/04/leigh-designs-acquires-ashland-sky.html

If you follow the link to their website, you'll see the various sizes and colors of these project and tool bags that are available.  I have three of these, ranging from the shoulder strap size where I store my very largest pieces, to the medium size which will hold a lot of threads and maybe a stitch guide, to the small tool tote size, which I use for a quick trip carry all.
http://www.ashlandsky.com

These durable bags are really good for long term storage (as long as you are not in a really humid climate as they don't breath) or for a trip where you want to be sure everything is safe.  I also love the fact that the company hires the disabled to assemble the bags.  There aren't that many programs for folks who have handicaps who want to work, but Ashland Sky's original and new owners make sure that this is one.

Disclaimer:  I do a lot of stitch guides and models for Leigh Designs which has distributed these project bags for several years, but I don't think this has colored my review of the Ashland Sky bags.  They are really good project bags.

A New Version of Christmas Parade

Needle Nicely just posted a photo of a finished Christmas March canvas from the Ashley Dillon/Susan Roberts series of holiday parade canvases.   The interesting thing about this canvas is that the stitcher asked for help simplifying her stitch guide to her comfort level and of course Needle Nicely is known for their customer service.  It was easy for Mary Agnes to customize the guide to give the stitcher stitches she was comfortable with.  It looks great!
http://needlenicely.blogspot.com/2014/03/a-stitched-christmas-parade.html

This just shows how much of a collaborative art needlepoint is.  In this case the designer, stitch guide writer, shop owner and stitcher all worked together to create a work of needle art that will grace the stitcher's home for many Christmases to come!

Facet Facts

Kreinik has posted an informational note on their blog about their Facets line.   Facets comes in two sizes-- regular and mini --as well as a wired version.  It's a very pretty thread and does look like a line of faceted beads.  I have not used it, but I probably will on my Egyptian Catra once I turn my attention back to her this summer.

Russian Santas--Forever Green

Carolyn Taggart's Latest Russian Santa Finish

Carolyn Taggart ---who must never sleep!--- has finished another Russian Santa from the Leigh Designs series that came out last December. Here is Forever Green Santa!   Isn't he lovely?  I find the fur especially gorgeous. Carolyn says the fur on the cuffs and the edge of Santa's robe was made from 2 strands of Wisper mixed with one strand of silk for strength, worked in stem and outline stitches and then brushed to make it fuzzier.  The hat is five strands of silk worked in Jump Thru the Loop Turkey Work, then cut and trimmed and brushed.

How do you work Jump Thru The Loop Turkey Work, you ask?   Sheena James has very kindly allowed me to share her diagram of this stitch.  Make a long stitch up and down in the same hole, then a small anchoring stitch goes down in the same hole as the first long stitch.

Sheena's Diagram for Jump Through the Loop Turkey Work

Susan Flippin McPherson has finished her Blue Russian!  Here's what he looks like.

Susan's Northern Light Santa Finished
Don't you just love his expression?  Susan used Brian's Steppe Stitch to create snow around her Russian Santa's feet.  That is diagrammed here in case you've forgotten.

Great stitching, Carolyn and Susan!  Many thanks to you both and to Sheena for sharing your stitching and diagramming for our viewing pleasure.

A Bead in a Berry

Anna Scott has posted a great tutorial on how to create berries by wrapping large beads with threads.  The real trick here is to use a very thin needle.
http://annascottembroidery.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/wrapped-bead-berry.html

Milliner's needles are perfect but threading that eye is not going to be easy.  This is the kind and size of needle Anna used.  Look at the eye and you'll see why threading up is a challenge.

Royal School of Needlework's Canvaswork Book UPDATED AGAIN

The Royal School of Needlework has published another in its series of Essential Stitch Guides, this time one on needlepoint (or as it is called in England, canvaswork).  As I read the review, I can't say I would recommend this to anyone who wants to add good needlepoint books to their library.  Not  if you do needlepoint American style, anyway.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2014/02/rsn-stitch-guide-canvaswork.html

The English style is on limited colors of canvas with fewer threads than what we have available to us, uses mostly slate frames (which are hard to find here, expensive and heavy--they also need good support which means a floor frame), and the English are used to working needlepoint from kits on large count with wool.  Mary's quote "there’s a small revival of individuality in canvas work today" pretty much sums up how the Brits view the world of needlepoint.  Recently I talked to a famous American designer about her one foray into producing designs for Ehrman, the well-known English needlepoint company.  Although Mr. Ehrman was delightful, "he had a ‘formula' of X-number of colors, 10-12 mesh, stitch painted, and he would determine subject."  This rigidity of format has produced some lovely designs but they are a far cry from what an American needlepointer expects and desires.  So the only reason I would see to buy this book is if you are interested in learning to transfer a design you want to stitch onto needlepoint canvas.  The Royal School knows everything there is to know about that topic!

It's not a Must Have, in other words, at least not for American stitchers.

UPDATE:  I got a note from Gretchen, the owner of Threads in Charlottesville, VA this week.  Gretchen has seen and sold quite a few copies of this book.  Here's what she has to say about it.

"I noted with interest your comments on the Royal School's book on Canvaswork. I have sold 6 copies or so to a variety of customers. Personally, I think it is eye candy for many levels of stitcher, has some great ideas for stitches, and above par color illustrations. And, at $21.95, it is a good value to boot! I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it!

FYI, the Royal School also has books in this series on Bead Embroidery, Silk Shading, Stumpwork and Whitework.  the only one I have not sold is the Whitework - as it isn't applicable to my shop.  I have been favorably impressed with each  - especially at the price point."

Thanks for the input, Gretchen.  Judging from the comments I got from Donna and Carol (see below), I've been too hard on this book!

Nimble Needle in New Jersey just snagged the last of ten exclusive Labor of Love canvases featuring the Young Queen Victoria with her dog.  I really enjoyed reading about these canvases which all are limited to an edition of ten and come with china heads and other attachments (a purse in this case).   If you are a counted canvaswork fan, you will enjoy seeing the new Imperial Fan from Finger Step Designs and the gorgeous shades of silk perles from Gumnuts pulled to go with the canvas.

Stitching Games Update

Ada Haydan of Eye Candy updates us on her progress with the March clue for Stitcherie's Stitching Games.
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2014/04/stitching-games-update-march-clue.html

Stitcherie is an online stitching hangout and K.B. runs a game there each year.  Each month there is a clue (April's is "bacon") which the participants use to inspire that month's stitching.  Before the end of the month the game players post a photo of their progress and explain how they interpreted the clue on their particular canvas.  You can join Stitcherie here, then click on the Stitching Games discussion to watch this year's 60+ stitchers run wild.

A few days ago I posted a link about a project "safe" that enables you to carry a canvas on stretcher bars around with you safely. I have another project tote for you to see on the Stitcherista's blog.  This one is also hand made and very beautiful but unfortunately as I write this the Etsy store is closed because the owner is away.  If you are interested in ordering one of these, you might have to keep checking back until the designer/manufacturer returns.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Help

Bird Wing from Brazil Cha-Cha
The owner of Exclamation Point! has just taken a class on silk ribbon embroidery and posted some information on her blog.   If you happen to live near the shop, do drop in and see the books and talk with the staff about this wonderful technique.
http://exclamationpoint.org/wordpress/?p=71

A friend loaned me several of Ann Cox's books and I can recommend them, too.  I adore River Silks silk ribbon as it is very sturdy, has a lovely sheen and comes in a very wide range of colors and several widths.  My only caution in silk ribbon embroidery is that the cards of ribbon don't have a lot of yardage and silk ribbon embroidery uses a LOT of ribbon.  You'll need more than you think.  The photo above is a bird wing from my Brazil Cha Cha canvas.  I used one card of each color on the wing which was about 5 inches long and perhaps three at the widest point.  The red stitches are satin stitches without a laying tool so I'd have a more feathery appearance and the overdyed yellow and orange ribbon is done in Japanese Ribbon Stitch.  You can see the entire finished canvas with the bird wings and tail all in ribbons here.

Beaded Penguins are Hilarious

Since beads are used so often on needlepoint these days, the two books Mary Corbet is reviewing in the link below are something folks might be interested in.  Both books are by Yasuko Endo.  One is mostly bands and the other mostly individual motifs, but they both are quite interesting and full of ideas, even if all you do is look at the pretty pictures Mary added to her review.
