A Book for Castaways UPDATED

Add caption
Guess what? Carole Lake and Michael Boren have a new book out!   It is called Desert Island Stitches:  Volume One -- Ideas for Small Spaces and is the first in a series of little books that concentrate on stitches that Carole and Michael find very useful and which they'd take with them if they were planning on being stranded on a desert island.  (Hopefully one with a great hotel, room service, and a pool with cabanas and a bar.)

Sneak Peek Inside
The Desert Island Stitches:  Small Spaces book is divided into five sections: tent stitches, diagonal stitches, oblique stitches, straight stitches and cross stitches.  Above is a page I picked at random from inside the book so you could see what the diagrams are like.  It's 78 pages long and the diagrams are black and white and are not numbered.  Each page has multiple stitch patterns diagramed on it.  Carole says it is about the size of the Stitches to Go book, so it is definitely tote bag or briefcase-sized.

The book is intended to be something you flip through when you are looking for ideas for small areas.  Carole says, "It's for when you have that stupid little space and you want something flirty and cute but not out of proportion to the space."

Start Packing for the Remote Stitching Island....
The book will be available through Rainbow Gallery at the TNNA show.   Carole says shops can preorder from Rainbow Gallery now.  Here's to a bunch of happy Robinson Crusoes in 2015!

UPDATE:  Needle in a Haystack has copies and tells us a bit about the book size and layout on their blog.

Redecorating

As you can see, I'm redecorating Blog again, changing the color scheme from a Christmas red and green to a more neutral one. Blog isn't the flashiest thing around, but keeping things simple so that any set of eyes and any computer can view it easily is The Plan.   Much as I'd like to have something more magazine-like, I know that won't work for a substantial minority of Blog's readers so that's out of the question.

Oh, well, you can pretend I am cutting edge and fashionable, right?  Even though Blog is the visual equivalent of an old pair of sweat pants and a ragged sweater?

Seriously, if your eyes or computer have trouble with the current or any future visual layout, please let me know by leaving a comment under the latest message or email me at chilly hollow at hot mail dot whatever.  That way I can adjust the look to make things more appealing to the greatest number.

Even if I am the fashion equivalent of Elmer Fudd.

How to Create A Sampler

Lorraine of Color Complements took Jo Christensen's book and her own hand dyed threads (but you can shop your stash) and created an original sampler of stitches. She taught herself new stitches, discovered ones she liked and would use again, and created something very pretty.   It's pretty easy, too!  So grab one of your stitch books and see what you can create.

A Free Four-Way Christmas Tree Pattern UPDATED

Kimberly has gifted us with a free chart she designed for Rainbow Gallery in 1999. Some things are classics and this four way Christmas tree with a star on top is one of them.  The little pattern between trees looks like an angel to me.  Hope you have time to stitch one or two of these for next year during the football games and after holiday relaxing time.
http://akimberlydesign.blogspot.com/2014/12/merry-christmas.html

Thank you, Kimberly!

UPDATE:  Kimberly has posted a photo of another color ways of her free four-way tree pattern. Neat!

Mary Corbet reviewed the Just a Thought Needlework Stand on her site recently.   In case you are in the market for a floor stand, her review will make it easy for you to understand how it works and whether it might be the right stand for your stitching next as she compares the Just a Thought floor stand to the Needlework System Four floor and table stands and to the Necessaire Floor Stand.  Follow the link to the JAT website for further information.

Needle Nicely just turned turned 500! Actually neither the shop nor Mary Agnes Ruddy Cussen the owner are actually five hundred, (OW! Mary Agnes threw a shoe at me!!!) but the Needle Nicely blog just added its five hundredth blog posting. Merry Christmas to All

Boots Bailey's The Stork and The Baby

I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas holiday, whether you are Christian and observe Christ's birth or not. If you are lucky, maybe you can do a little stitching today. If you are very lucky you are celebrating with family and friends; if you aren't, you are having a quiet holiday by yourself. Either way, my best wishes for a terrific and healthy 2015 are going out to you, along with this image of the late Boots Bailey's The Stork and The Baby.

Don't forget that those we have lost are always accessible to us again in our memories.  I hope you have the best memories of Christmases past to enjoy on this Holy Day.

If not, here's to a Happy 2015 in which to make good memories.

Christmas Has Arrived Early This Year (Tony Minieri Stitch Guides)

Yes, Christmas has arrived two days early here in Chilly Hollow--Tony Minieri's website finally has some of his stitch guides available! These are electronic guides (unless you live in countries where Tony has to collect VAT) available instantly after payment. All the details are here.
http://www.tonyminieri.com/kazoos-store/

I expect more guides will be added as Tony has time to make them available. No, I haven't bought any yet. I'm still trying to decide....

If you have and you want to let the rest of us know what the guides are like (some of them are likely quite old), please comment below or email me at chillyhollow at hotmail dot com. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Angels and Elf on a Shelf

I have to admit the Elf on a Shelf craze seems to have skipped Chilly Hollow.  I don't "get" it but a lot of folks love these little elves. If you are one, then Enriched Stitch has an exclusive Elf ornament for you to stitch for Christmas 2015.

Dag Nab It

I meant to title this "Snag Nab It" as that's the tool I wanted to mention today but I flubbed the title and it's so funny, I left it.  The Snag Nab It is a needle with a spiral at the point end that carries loose threads from the front of a knitted fabric to the back.  The original use was to fix snags but we stitchers use it to carry loose thread ends to the back side.  The first section shows the needle in close up and how it is used on clothing.  Shop around as the prices vary.

Berdorf's Needlepoint Window for Christmas 2014

Lisa HK just posted photographs on Facebook she took of one of Bergdorf's Christmas windows in New York City.   She says that the window has both stitched and unstitched canvases that are portraits of literary figures.  The window also uses felting and macramé.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203021343039994&set=a.10203021342879990.1073741837.1397401143&type=1&theater

Here are more photographs. The red Literature window photos are the ones with needlepoint portraits.
http://ny.racked.com/archives/2014/11/24/bergdorf_goodman_holiday_windows_2014.php

Needlepoint For Fun helped create the designs.  Yeah!

Here is more about the inspiration behind the window series.  There are some photos of the computer stitched portraits and the felted bust but nothing else.

Tropical Jazz Revisited

Terry Dryden is having to scramble to pick up threads for her older Tropical Jazz kits now.  This is something that happens a lot to us stitchers as the small businesses that create our threads and other supplies run out of stock and can't afford to make more or can't get the necessary elements to make more.  Terry looks on this as Revisiting a design, and I think that's a good way to think of it.
http://www.terrydryden.com/-blog/2014/11/30/embellishment-threads.html

So the next time you pick up a stitch guide and can't get some of the threads listed,
revisit the design and customize it to your own liking with something you can get your hands on.  After all, this makes it uniquely yours.

Need a Seam Ripper?

The Etsy store PopsTurningz just posted on Facebook that they have hand made seam rippers with either wooden or acrylic handles. If you or someone on your gift list needs a ripping tool, this might be one you should consider. I don't know anything about the quality but they certainly have lovely handles.

Determining the Selvage Edge

Natalia tells us how to determine the selvage edge on a piece of silk gauze that doesn't have the selvage still attached.

Here is why it matters and how to determine selvage on white mono needlepoint canvas.

Sally Goes Coach

While I was cruising around the Internet, looking for something totally different, I discovered that Sally Corey Designs was asked to turn some of Coach's signature designs into needlepoint cushions to decorate some of the Coach stores.  Aren't they nice?  The second link has slightly larger pillows.  Congratulations, Sally!

Stitchy Girl Temptations

Barbara Elmore, whose stitching is amazing, has opened a Zazzle store called Stitchy Girl where you can put some of her masterpieces on an iPhone case, or mug, or computer mouse pad.

Take a moment to browse Barbara's designs and maybe you'll find another that you can get her to release to Zazzle so you have something more than a very boring phone cover.

Decorating Blog for Christmas

I may not have started decorating the house for Christmas but yesterday I finished decorating Blog!  For those with vision problems, I know red and green aren't the best choices but this is just for the holidays.  The trio of Christmas ornaments on the right side are things I've stitched over the years.  The tiny Maggie stocking is in honor of Lucky, my mother's cat.  Mrs. Santa Claus is from Joan Thomasson/Stitchin' Stuff, and the blue Santa is a free design I found somewhere and changed around to suit my whim.  I've already mentioned that the little stocking welcoming you to Chilly Hollow for the holidays is a Kathy Schenkel design, kindly stitched for me by Judie of Thistle Needleworks.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

How To Finish Your Bunny

Thanks to Nancy B. posting about this on Facebook, I have a link to a blog with great finishing instructions for a shaped bunny ornament.   The design is from Associated Talents and is retired, although folks on Facebook are begging to have it reissued.

Hanging the Stocking on the Tree--Next to a Magnifier

Natalia of Natalia's Fine Needlework showed off a pair of her Christmas stockings on her blog this morning...,
http://scarletsailsminiatures.blogspot.com/2014/11/christmas-is-coming-to-town.html

...which reminded me that Melissa Boling of Miniature Home posed a great little lion and lamb stocking at the Needlepoint Nation group on Facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/MiniatureHomeDollhousePetitpoint/photos/a.149582905110957.35149.149573375111910/729962340406341/?type=1&theater

These are all original designs, by the way, and done on silk gauze.  I don't know what count Natalia used but Melissa's little angel and animals stocking is on 48 count.

Melissa's website has this design and other wonderful tiny stocking charts for sale.  I particularly like her Scotties in the snow.  Click on the little miniature photo to see these stitched.
http://www.miniaturehome.com/Holidays.html

Natalia's stockings are available as kits or can be custom stitched for you.  I particularly like her snowflakes on red stocking but there are a lot of lovely designs available.
http://scarletsailsminiatures.blogspot.com/p/dollhouse-miniature-christmas-stockings.html

Janet Granger sells Christmas stocking kits that include 40 count silk gauze as well.  On this count, one ply of almost any brand of cotton or silk floss works well.   These pieces are done in tent stitches and are a lot quicker to stitch than a regular 18 or 13-14 count stocking.  Her Ho Ho Ho Santa stocking is great but I also love her Wise Men stocking as I adore Nativity sets.

The Clever Use of Thread Weight

Anne of ABS Designs has created an original design as a gift for friends.  As she stitches, she is using two different stitches and two weights of threads in the same color to differentiate the border from the center of the design.   I think this is very clever!
http://thecapestitcher.blogspot.com/2014/12/dogs-and-cats-more-progress.html

Here's the finished design.
http://thecapestitcher.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-zooey-finale.html

The next time you need a subtle border, remember Anne's idea.

Snowball Fight!

Suzanne of the Hugs and Stitches blog just hit a home run with her latest canvas from Scott Church Creative/CBK. It's a squirrel caught in the middle of a snowball fight!
http://suzannehicks.blogspot.com/2014/11/check-out-this-masterpiece.html

She got the dimension of the piece just right, balancing all the heavier elements like the tail and scarf and snowballs with heavier background and ground stitches.  Nothing really outshines any other part so that the entire design is unified.  This is the kind of thing we stitchers aim for--every bit is perfect and works with every other bit.

There isn't anything I don't love about this piece, from the beaded dimensional snowballs to the fluffy turkey work tale to the hand knit silk scarf.  Here is the original Scott Church needlepoint canvas, just to help you see how Suzanne brought this to life.
http://www.cbkneedlepoint.com/uploads/sc-pl_25.jpg

Congratulations on perfection, Suzanne.

Merry Christmas!

Everything seems to be more hectic than usual this Christmas but I finally got Blog decorated for the holidays this morning.  The little stocking on the left side was a present from Judie at Thistle Threads in Connecticut about five years ago.  Isn't it darling?!   It's one of Kathy Schenkel's mini socks that come with felt things to put inside.  Judie's online shop at Alex Paras has many more to choose from.
http://store.apneedlearts.com/miwdo.html

Thanks again, Judie.  I love my little stocking as you know us stitchers mostly make and give stitched gifts and rarely receive them.  This one is special and much appreciated!

The Stitcher's Tool Kit

While looking at the Access Commodities thread sets yesterday, I stumbled across their tool kit.
http://www.thenimbleneedle.com/servlet/the-2225/Raised-Work-and-Beading/Detail

There are two types of pliers (used to break beads instead of ripping them out and for bending wires and pulling needles through heavy fabric), stainless steel scissors and wire cutters, and tweezers, this is the set for the serious needleworker who needs dedicated tools for specialty work such as stumpwork, beading and finishing.

Santa, are you listening?

Stitching Mementos UPDATED

Suzanne has been stitching a memento of a trip her daughter took to London.
http://suzannehicks.blogspot.com/2014/11/union-jack.html

This got me thinking about all those travel ornaments that people stitch in memory of a trip they took.  There are lots available, as Janet Perry shows in this round-up of places to find such things.
http://www.nuts-about-needlepoint.com/destination-needlepoint/

Of course any ornament that triggers a good memory will work.  Hope you have fun picking just the right one to stitch this season for Holiday 2015.

UPDATE:  Ridgewood posted a lot of photos of the travel ornaments from Danji.  I rarely see so many in one place.  Some celebrate Christmas in a special spot, some just celebrate the location.  All are great!

Tisha and the Twister UPDATED

Needlepoint Tool Time continues its tradition of unusual and interesting stitching accessories this month with the Twister, a needle container that twists open like a lipstick and holds needles fanned out but held by a magnet in the bottom so you can pick just the one you need.   You can see all the new items in the video on the site's home page...
http://www.needlepointtooltime.com

...or you can just click on "New Products" on the right and go straight to the Twister's photo and description.  That might be best because who can resist rhinestone scissors, or Annie Lane magnets or  My Favorite Laying Tool or a flat iron to straighten threads, or....

You get the point.  Tisha stocks a lot of great stuff.  Enter the website at your own peril.

All Souped Up (with Tapestries)

Anna Pearson does needlepoint classes all over the United Kingdom and as part of the classes, lunch is served.   Now the ladies who do the lunches have collaborated on a soup cookbook.  I'm not clear if the cookbook has needlepoint charts included or just photographs of the authors' stitching but regardless this is a different and interesting present for the stitching chef in your life.

Wonderful Stitches, with Your Host Diane

Wonderful Stitches: 320 Stitches for Needlepoint is a self-published book by Diane Schultz.  It's not a book I've ever seen although I've been aware of the various editions for a long time.  I just never got around to purchasing a copy.  That might have been a mistake!  I just found Diane's Wonderful Stitches website which not only promotes her book but has some lovely stitch diagram resources.
http://www.needlework.com

Take a little time to explore the site.  There's a free download of a sampler project (see right side of the page for the link),  and four pages of free diagrams in the "Pattern Collections" section found in the top navigation bar.  If you see an interesting stitch sample, click on it for the diagram.  Once you get to the diagram page, note that any compound stitches are diagrammed in several steps so you can see stage one, then the new stitch section in stage two, then the final diagram in stage three to make it easy to work the stitch in each step.

You can preview the first twenty-two pages or buy a copy of Wonderful Stitches via Lulu.  It is expensive at $87.02 but all self-published books with as much diagramming and color photos as this one costs to publish.  I don't know if shipping costs are included in the price.

Antique Needlepoint at the Musuem

Susan (you know her as Plays with Needles) have been to the "Diligant Needle" exhibit at Winterthur and came home with some great photographs of pieces that caught her fancy.  I am most interested at the second piece she admired, which is what with think of as Victorian needlepoint but with a difference.  The flowers and at least one butterfly are over stitched with filament silk in what we now call needle painting, giving emphasis and life to select areas of the design.
http://plays-with-needles.blogspot.com/2014/10/three-faves-from-diligent-needle-exhibit.html

Actually, based on this overstitching I'd guess this is the work of a British stitcher as it appears to be heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement to my eyes.  Of course well traveled Americans would have see William Morris' work but somehow I think this is a domestic piece done by one of Morris' admirers in England.

There are several great ideas, like the chain and stem stitches that create the "eye" on the butterfly's wing and the stem and straight stitches that give detail to a leaf.  This indeed is one of the stitching ancestors of today's embellished needlepoint style!

Plenty of Stitch Guides

I keep forgetting to tell Blog readers that I've been constantly updating the Chilly Hollow Stitch Guides blog with new guides that are becoming available.    My latest guide for Tommy the Ghost is announced there.  Sharp-eyed readers will have watched the progress on the model for Tommy in the right hand column of Blog.  The reason those photos have been replaced by one of Leigh Designs' Russian maidens is that I've finished Tommy and am stitching Woodland Belle now.
http://chstitchguides.blogspot.com/2014/12/tommy-ghost-leigh-designs.html

If you click on the link, you'll see Tommy but if you then click on the header title photo, you'll be able to go back in time to see the huge Santa's workshop piece that has a Sherry Bray guide, explore the various Vicki Sawyer guides that Carolyn Hedge Baird has created for these new designs available from Melissa Shirley, and you can check out Señor Rooster and Maggie's Laugh.

There's always something going on over there.  If the link is to a Facebook page, don't worry.  Many times those pages are visible even if you don't have a Facebook account.  Click and see!

Recently my buddy Marianne (of Newneedlepoint.com fame) asked me to look at a copy of a rare booklet by Katherine Ireys about basketweave called Diagonal Tent Stitch.   I had never seen this 1974 book before and found it fascinating.  I won't repeat what I said (just read the link below) except to repeat if you are interested in better technique in basketweave or are a left handed stitcher who wants to master basketweave,  this book and Davie Hyman's Diagonal Basketweave are books you should get your hands on whenever you see a copy.  They are classics.
